LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Thank You! My name is Edwin Santiago and a friend gave me a
subscription to your newsletter around 14 years ago. I sold my
house and everything I had owned except my car and have been
taking care of homes ever since. I started out with you all and
then word of mouth from one home owner to the next. I started out
in Puerto Rico for a two week gig that turned into a month. I
have taken care of many homes and animals in many states and now
mostly in Texas. Even with Covid going on, I have had just as
many bookings. Clients have been visiting family instead of
traveling abroad. 2022 is already half full of bookings. So that
is my story and I am so blessed to be booked and enjoy what I do.
It started with you all and I thank the person who gave me the
subscription to The Caretaker Gazette. God Bless and have a great
day. Edwin S., Clarksville, TN

Hi Edwin, thanks for writing. Great to hear that you have made
a career out of property caretaking. Please spread the good word
about the Gazette.

Hey Gary and team, just a quick note and change of address for
you. I’m off on another caretaking gig thanks to your great
publication. April M., Sacramento, CA

Thanks for the update, April. You are able to change your
mailing and/or email address yourself anytime you log into your
account. Just click on CHANGE ADDRESS at the top of the screen
after you log in. Please let us know if you need any help in
logging in and best of luck on your new assignment.

Hi Gary, we found our last caretakers as the result of an ad we
placed on your website six years ago. I hope our new help wanted
ad in the Gazette is as successful this time and that the
respondents are as qualified. Appreciatively, Mike M., Redding,
CA

Hi Mike, thanks for your kind words and for, once again,
submitting your help wanted ad for caretakers with us. We’ve
grown tremendously in the past six years, with many new
well-qualified subscribers. I’m sure your new ad will be as
successful as the last and you’ll find great caretakers for
your property.

Hi Gary, my husband and I are slowly traveling our way across the
U.S. thanks to some positions we’ve found in your Gazette.
We’re getting ready to take a great leap and find a position
outside the U.S. We’d love to have our profile in the Gazette
as a means to showcase our experiences to property owners.
What’s the best way to do this? Thank you to you and your staff
for all you do. Laura and Jim W. Des Moines, IA

Hi Laura and Jim, I appreciate your message. We always enjoy
hearing from our subscribers. It’s great that you and your
husband have been able to use the Gazette to travel throughout
the U.S. Being profiled in the Gazette is a great way to
highlight your experiences to prospective employers and to help
other subscribers who are contemplating a caretaker lifestyle.
Please read Pages 8 and 9 of each issue for our profiles. For

PROPERTY CARETAKER PROFILE

Island Caretakers: Welcome To The Jungle!
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Greg) and
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Melissa)
Interests: Travel, art, music, nature, hiking, photography,
animals, boating, VW buses
Quote: “Livin’ the dream….”

Greg and Melissa are all smiles on the Georgia beach

Our current caretaking job, which has been advertised in The
Caretaker Gazette on and off for many years, really is special.
My wife Melissa and I, along with our two partners in crime, the
island managers, live on and care for a remote barrier island off
the coast of the state of Georgia. There is a family property
here that we care for and the rest of the island is a protected
nature preserve. Aside from the family, when they are visiting,
we rarely see any other people out here. The island is only
accessible by boat and therefore very quiet and very peaceful.
There are seven miles of white sand beach that you typically have
all to yourself. There are multiple trails and “roads“ to
explore the interior of the island, meandering through a jungle
of old growth live oak, palm and pine trees. There are ponds and
creeks and thousands of acres of marsh to explore. The wildlife
here is abundant. There are deer, alligators, armadillos,
dolphins, sea turtles, countless birds, snakes, reptiles, and of
course the occasional mosquito. The work itself is both
challenging and rewarding.
Living remotely forces you to be very creative when
problem-solving. Some caretaking jobs require that you simply
pick up the phone when an item needs attention: if a starter goes
out on a truck, if the generator won’t start, if the pool is
leaking, if an appliance fails, if there is an alligator at the
door. Here, whatever comes up, we’re it. We are responsible for
the maintenance and upkeep of the island vehicles, backhoe
tractor, the boats, the landscaping equipment, the three diesel
generators, the solar power array, the buildings themselves, the
water, the septic, the landscaping, housekeeping, laundry etc.
Some days you’re a mechanic. Some days you are a plumber. Some
days you’re doing carpentry. Some days you’re driving the
boat ferrying people and supplies back-and-forth to the mainland.
Some days you’re out in the woods with the chainsaws and the
backhoe playing lumberjack looking for downed firewood.
Along with our salary, part of our compensation is a two bedroom
house hidden among towering live oak trees draped with Spanish
moss. It looks and feels like something from a different era,
which I suppose it is. In the hotter months, which is most of the
year, we rely on fans to stay cool and in the winter we have a
wood stove for heat. We do some gardening for veggies while all
of the other groceries are about a half hour boat ride followed
by a 20 minute car ride away. Being so isolated makes it pretty
easy for the bustling outside world to fade away. And that,
really, is one of our favorite things about being property
caretakers. There are so many opportunities to experience remote,
beautiful places in such an immersive and long term way.
You rack up experiences as a caretaker that you would never have
as a tourist. One weekend morning, instead of finishing coffee
and the crossword puzzle, we were summoned to relocate an
alligator that had decided to set up camp too close to one of our
buildings…really added a new twist to the morning. Another
time, a while back, one of the hydraulic rams was leaking on the
back hoe. To pull that ram from the machine put me on the top of
a forty foot ladder up in an oak tree with a two-ton chain hoist.
It was awesome! That repair took two weeks. The novelty of this
job, this lifestyle, is really what it’s all about. That
coupled with not being owned by your stuff, your house, your car.
We are free!
Melissa and I have always been nomadic souls. She is originally
from New England, I am from the Pacific Northwest, and we met in
the bush of Alaska at a remote fishing lodge where we had both
taken jobs for the summer back in ‘98. In a way that was our
first caretake together since we were in charge of the upkeep of
the property and grounds as well as hospitality, cooking,
housekeeping, all in exchange for salary and room and board.
Melissa and I connected immediately and from there our travel
adventures began. Over the next several years, we would work
summers in Alaska and then travel the rest of the year exploring
much of southeastern Asia. Some of the countries we visited
included Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Burma and Thailand, where at
one point we lived in Bangkok while teaching English for a year.

Eventually we began to miss family so we came back to the
states. My parents were full-time RVers so Melissa and I bought a
VW bus (that we will have forever) and hit the road too. We all
met up in Lake Tahoe and worked there and in Southern California
as campground hosts which was another step towards property
caretaking for us. Eventually we found our way to Taos, New
Mexico and fell in love with the place. We got married there and
stuck around for almost six years even getting ourselves some
“real” jobs. I got a position working for the public works
department of Taos Ski Valley giving me experience with water,
waste water, heavy equipment etc. and Melissa worked her way up
to the management position of some vacation condominiums in the
Ski Valley.

Hiking and looking north from the ranch in New Mexico

Our front yard Hawaiian view, with Mauna Kea in
background

Still having a hard time sitting still, we changed houses three
times in the six years that we were there in Taos, ultimately
getting to live in a beautiful house with gorgeous mountain and
mesa views, surrounded by national forest. That particular
property was owned by a woman who lived on the east coast and who
was having some trouble finding a reliable person to look in on
her property. We were connected to her through a coworker and
agreed to care for her property and manage any maintenance issues
in return for reduced rent. Another step in the caretaking
journey. Well, that situation really opened our eyes to the
possibilities of caretaking and we’ve never looked back.
The travel bug was biting again! We helped find some new
tenants/caretakers for that house and then we took off
backpacking through Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and
landed on the Guanacaste Peninsula of Costa Rica for our first
“official” caretaking gig that we had found online. Again
there was a beautiful home that the owner simply could just not
be there to care for. For an entire year we lived on a five acre
property in a beautiful little house minutes from the beach with
iguanas in the yard and howler monkeys in the trees. It was a
dream! We could never have afforded to rent such a place for that
amount of time. We cared for the place as if it were our own,
providing security, overseeing several small repairs, the
landscaping and cleaning, and dealing with vendors as needed. We
got a crash course in the care of tropical plants and a lot of
practice speaking Spanish.
Then back on the road! We again ventured up to Taos, New Mexico
to pick up our VW bus and then east to Florida to where my
parents and Melissa‘s dad had have all retired. We hung out
with family, did another stint as campground hosts in Vero Beach,
Florida and before long we got the dream call from New Mexico. An
acquaintance of a friend was looking for caretakers for a 117
acre ranch near Santa Fe that is on the market to be sold and
whose current caretakers are moving on. A paid position available
immediately! This property used to be a home for troubled teens.
There were two dormitories, a cafeteria, a pool house, tennis
courts, several other buildings, and miles of wilderness all
isolated on this beautiful high desert property. We jumped on it!

We lived there alone with the coyotes and the rabbits for 4½
years until the property eventually sold. While we were there, we
kept all of the buildings alive, chased stray cattle, mended
fences, cleared dead pinion and juniper, painted, plumbed, ran
the brush hog, relocated rattlesnakes, kept the water system and
the tractors and trucks alive, and the mice and pack rats
un-alive. With all of that extra space we also ran a dog boarding
business on the side (with the blessing of the ranch owner of
course). Also, Melissa, who is an artist, having tons of studio
space, cranked out multiple pieces of art during our time there
and is still represented by a gallery in Santa Fe. Melissa's
artwork consists of hand-cut and paste collages.
Uncannily, right as the ranch was selling we got a phone call
from a lady who had seen our caretaking profile online. She has a
15 acre ranch property with a horse, some mules, a miniature
donkey, and two dogs in beautiful Kamuela, Hawaii. To keep up
with the property and the animals, she was looking for a couple
to come and live in the guest house located on her property. This
was another paid gig that came with a house and a truck, this
time on the Big Island. We did the only sensible thing and moved
to Hawaii! This job focused greatly on landscaping and
housekeeping. We were there for two years exploring every corner
of the island. Here we found ourselves in another place that
would’ve been pretty pricey for us to visit even for a few
weeks and instead we got paid to be there for two years.
Here we got some equine experience which is always handy when it
comes to caretaking jobs. Additionally, we got to work closely
with the local arborist and organic gardening pros. Another local
guru that I learned a lot from was the small engine repair guy
who lived across the street. On our off-days we would spend
hiking, snorkeling, and searching for the perfect Mai Tai. All in
all, it was hard work but a pretty stress-free existence. The
great thing about living on Hawaii is that you are in the middle
of the Pacific Ocean. The difficult part about living on Hawaii
is that you are in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is a long
and expensive journey for family to come and visit. So once again
we set our sights somewhere nearer to our folks in Florida.
We get back online and another island gig falls into our laps,
this one off the coast of Georgia, lost in another time, full of
its own lessons and experiences, and just a 30 minute boat ride
to our VW bus. This Georgia island position was advertised in The
Caretaker Gazette, on and off, for many years, and this time our
timing was perfect! For now it is the perfect fit. It’s a
jungle out there….What next?

OHIO

HELP NEEDED. I have an Amish built cabin in Coshocton County, in
Fresno, OH. It is on 18.9 acres of land. The farm has about 20
chickens, 12 highlander cows, two emus, one goat, five sheep, two
pigs (which will be gone in September), an older horse (Deka) and
a donkey (Billy Sue). The cabin is 16'x30' with second floor
bedroom with a 4'x6' deck overlooking the valley. Heat will be
via wood stove. The caretaker cabin will have a small
bathroom/shower, small kitchen, and electric and internet access.
It is free to live in exchange for taking care of the place. We
are looking for someone that likes to live sustainably, help us
with the farm, cut and trim grass, take care of the animals and
property. We always help when we are there. There are plenty
places to work for additional money but your living expenses are
not a worry. On off hours, there is an opportunity to explore the
land and forage for wild edible plants. Our goal is to build a
permaculture farm and try to be as sustainable, but also be
practical. Eventually being off the grid is another desire.
Basically, make it so people would like to visit, learn and maybe
stay. We have two other cabins and will be holding classes
covering camping skills, etc. We do not live there, but come on
weekends. When we are there, we have bon fires, picnics and other
events. Not to mention, help with the place. We work in Cleveland
to make this all possible. There is another cabin for us. We are
trying to establish a permaculture environment with fruit trees,
gardens, startup grape vines and a fishing pond. I can send
pictures of the area and cabin. If you are interested, please
email us at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

AN ALTERNATIVE TO COSTLY MEDICAL INSURANCE
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both
property owners and caretakers/housesitters, have discussed their
healthcare situation and possible insurance options/alternatives
with us. My wife and I dropped our current medical insurance when
the premiums jumped to $2,000 per month with a $12,000 annual
deductible. We switched to a $354 per month healthcare program
for called Medi-Share.
I wanted to send you some information about Medi-Share as I
thought you might be interested in their affordable healthcare.
Like us, you and your family could join their community of
400,000+ who share in each other's medical burdens. Since 1993
more than $4 Billion in medical expenses have been shared and
discounted by Medi-Share members.
Always free and unlimited with Medi-Share:

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and
interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005,
was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse
ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a
cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. During the start
of the year 2005, the handwriting on the wall began and the books
closed on this historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then,
became my pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true
happenings during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the
open range while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into
usable cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later
in the other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among
wild cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin’ out in Arizona’s
beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although
unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever
dreamed of being a cowboy, here’s your chance to ride along
with me as your side-kick and saddle pard. You can view an
entertaining introduction with many colored pictures at
lastdkcowboy.com or you can write to me at
