LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Good morning, Gary. It looks like we have found a caretaker
couple for our rural Texas farm caretaking position. I took your
advice and signed up for a Gazette subscription and found some
very interesting and experienced people in your Situations Wanted
section. I contacted several couples and found one who is
familiar with this region! We have already met on the property
and they have been out several times to get the caretaker cottage
set up the way they like. We just talked again and they will move
out to our ranch permanently in September. I'll let you know
further how it all works out. Thank you for your suggestions and
the Gazette. Scott C., Dallas, TX

Thanks for your message, Scott. I'm happy you were able to
find such a great caretaker couple via our Situation Wanted ads.
Please keep in touch and let us know how things work out for all
of you.

Hi Gary, I've enjoyed seeing the Beautiful photos of new Gazette
ads on your Twitter account. After following you for a couple of
years, I think I'd like to apply for some of the more recent ones
so can you tell me the best way to do this? Thank you! Elizabeth
M., Brooklyn, NY

Hi Elizabeth, thank you for your message. You will see on our
Twitter and Instagram accounts that additional details (including
contact information) was first sent out to all of our subscribers
as part of one of our email broadcasts. If you would like to
apply for some of these positions, you need to be a Caretaker
Gazette subscriber. In addition to receiving the bi-monthly issue
of the Gazette, you will receive email updates, featuring these
new ads, several times per week. You can decide which type of
subscription will work best for you by going to www.caretaker.org
and clicking on the Subscribe tab. Thanks.

Gary, you won't believe it, but it happened again. This time it
was one of your male subscribers with whom we were writing
frequently over the past year. Everything was cleared and agreed
to, and six days before the agreed upon arriving date he realized
that he did not have enough money for the trip down to Belize,
which he planned to do with his truck. So, please could you again
publish a little emergency ad for us and use the same Visa Card
to pay for our ad. Thanks, Stephan C., Hopkins, Belize

Hi Stephan, I'm very sorry to read about one of our
subscribers standing you up like that, so close to your agreed
upon start date. We have emailed out your emergency ad and also
have it on Page 4 of this new issue. I hope you get a great
caretaker applicant from our subscriber base, like you've had in
the past.

Just want to congratulate you on a First Rate service! After
receiving our first issue, we submitted our resume to one of your
advertisers. We were very pleased to hear back from our potential
employer within 24 hours with a caretaker job offer. And with a
nice package, including a generous salary and benefits plus a
lovely home! We highly recommend The Caretaker Gazette to anyone
looking to fill/find the perfect position/employee! Thanks again
Gary! Best regards, Judy B., Sacramento, CA

Judy, that was quick and easy. You must have an impressive
resume! Most folks need to respond to a number of our advertisers
before they receive offers like yours. Let us know how it works
out.

Hi Gary, you can remove my Help Wanted ad as I have already found
a great caretaker couple from our first ad in your Gazette. I had
many responses and so many qualified caretakers to choose from!
The caretaker couple who came to us from your Gazette have
already been out here to visit and things went well from both
directions! Thanks for everything! Your publication is the best.
Dee R., Boulder, CO

Dee, glad to hear you received a great response and found the
right caretakers via your Help Wanted ad! Please spread the good
word about the Gazette, so other property owners can have the
same success you've had by advertising their property needs in
the Gazette.

someone to look after the house and two small well-behaved dogs
usually for periods of two to three weeks. Nothing arduous, just
being around and feeding the two pooches. Lots to see nearby,
just six miles from Exeter, and 20 minutes from the coast. We've
had lots of USA, Australian and NZ housesitters in the past -
always good. Housesitters will need their own transport or we

FRANCE

A LIVE-IN DOMESTIC COUPLE needed in Paris. Our clients, who owns
a substantial historical residence in Paris, are looking to
employ a live-in Domestic Couple - Private Chef/Butler (a
separate apartment within walking distance of the main residence
will be provided). The Principals are a young professional couple
who both work and have two children aged eight and four years
old. The house is fully staffed but they wish to have a positive
thinking couple who are highly experienced with impeccable skills
to fulfil this role. The duties would be: Private Chef - To
prepare breakfast (for two), a light lunch if required, and an
evening meal on occasions. The couple dine out regularly during
the week but do entertain on weekends. The number of guests
rarely go above eight, and they like beautifully presented
nouvelle cuisine. When not entertaining on weekends, the family
enjoy a roast chicken and potatoes, so the Chef must be prepared
to step up to a high level of cooking when required for more
formal dinners but also enjoy cooking simple nutritious family
food too. The Chef will also be required to assist in the laundry
of table napkins and dining cloths, and be prepared to be
hands-on in some aspect of housekeeping, flower arranging, etc.
The Butler duties will be varied. A very high standard of service
for more formal dinners is required and a good understanding and
knowledge of the finer touches when serving drinks and 'snacks'.
During the day, you will be assisting clearing the walkways
outside, washing two of the cars, and attending to little tasks
and chores that need to be done within the residence as well as
preparing the Principal's closet. Excellent service is required,
however this is a formal/informal household and one in which
staff stay long-term as they are greatly appreciated. It is
important you take pride in your work, are attentive to the finer
details and have a great attitude - they like a 'happy'
household. Work five days per week (with two days off during the
week). Hours of work will be 7am to start with a break from
2-6pm, returning at 6pm to prepare and serve dinner if the
Principals are in residence. The Principals are open to salary
expectations so please state yours when applying for this role.

Reykjavk. The Botanic Garden is an outdoor collection of living
plants, founded in 1961. The garden's main role is to conserve

These special events are all related to the general aim and work

Friday when work finishes at 12:00 as a part of an ongoing
research into shortening the working week. Volunteers have to be

CARETAKERS NEEDED in 2020 at a family-owned, historical house in
Tuscany. The family has owned the Villa since 1536 and they will
need caretakers between March and October 2020 at the
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX in the Tuscany countryside. The Villa is
seven kilometers from Pisa and 10 kilometers from Lucca, inside a
nature park reserve in the Tuscan countryside, on an old Roman
Road. The Villa's exterior is decorated with graffiti dating back
to 1500 and which are typical of Florentine Mannerist Art. Inside
the salons of the Villa frescoes by Andrea Boscolo (1592) and

responsible, reliable person who loves historical houses and is
willing to stay in the Villa, carry out some duties in exchange

Chris Isner with his English/Spanish dictionary

I was caretaking a hillside property in Los Angeles when the
owner unexpectedly decided to return home early, and I needed to
find a new place, quickly. What to do? I Googled "caretaker
positions" and discovered The Caretaker Gazette, of course! I
immediately subscribed to the Gazette and then read this
Help-Wanted ad in my first issue online, and responded to it
immediately:

COSTA RICA

A BAMBOO HOUSE is available for you in the mountains of Costa
Rica, on nine acres, secluded with a 10 foot waterfall on the
property. We need long-term caretakers, with minimal duties. We
have many fruit trees, no electricity currently - but it is
coming soon, a gravity water system, and composting toilet. We
are 20 minutes from Dominical Beach and surfing. The caretaker
must be reliable and responsible and be a sustainable lifestyle
type. Please email for pictures at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
My initial email message led to a phone call with the property
owner. We chatted a while, I outlined my experience and skill
set, and we agreed that it would be perfect for me. So, within
just a few hours I had secured a position and booked a flight to
Costa Rica. Three days later I was living in paradise.
The property was an organic farm of sorts in the pristine
Tinamastes Valley between the inland city of San Isidro de
General and the coastal surfing town, Dominical. Located on Costa
Rica's amazingly beautiful Central Pacific coastline, the small
village of Dominical is a surfer's paradise where waves can reach
over 10 feet high. An experienced surfer's beach, Dominical lies
some 40 kilometers south of Playa de Jaco in Puntarenas province.
Attracting surfers not only from across the country, but from all
over the world, Dominical is a great place to lie back and enjoy
the various activities and water sports found around here.
There was a funky bamboo house built by the owner, but I lodged
in a derelict old RV in the jungle that I shared with a couple of
giant geckos that sang like birds at night. While the house was
connected to the electric and water mains, my light was a lantern
and my shower was a waterfall. The Swiss commune that was up the
road has water rights to the potable freshwater springs but they
allow the community free access.
Life was good. The owner of the property worked back in the U.S.
half the year and there really wasn't all that much to do. I
worked on a few projects - plastic tarp greenhouses, mulch
rotation, bamboo harvesting - and I did some gardening, but the
heavy work of incessant weed-whacking and orchard pruning was
done by a local guy. More than anything I was there for security,
just a presence lest the property be ransacked. While far safer
than anyplace in the United States, there does seem to be a
peculiar attitude towards thievery in Costa Rica. Maybe it's
assumed that those who don't utilize and secure their property
have too much to know what to do with, so people feel justified
in sharing it. Who knows? But it is a good idea to keep
belongings secured at all times.
There is nothing like walking down a red dirt road with a
machete on your hip and thirty pounds of bananas on your shoulder
while thunder rumbles and monkeys roar from the mountaintops! I
fell in love with the place. I could literally spend entire days
watching amazing birds, bugs and lizards, cooking amazing foods
in the outdoor kitchen, beefing up my less-than-amazing Espanol
with my English/Spanish dictionary, and brewing awesomely amazing
local coffee. I grew zucchini the size of my thigh and hung bags
of produce on the fence every few days for my next door
neighbors, who in turn left me fresh milk and eggs and homemade
cheese. I carved a bunch of Virgin Mary gourds and left them on
the neighbor ladies' porches. I made friends on the thirty-minute
bus rides to and from the beach.
Noni juice is had by letting the fruit rot in the sun in a water
jug, and then pouring out the liquid that collects at the bottom.
I would take a shot of that foul juice every morning as there is
just nothing better for you, but it's definitely one of the most
gruesome things I've ever tasted. Whoever said that the nectar of
the gods is sweet was a romantic fool. Fruits from the peach palm
(pejibaye), on the other hand, are lovely when boiled, with a
bean-like consistency, delicious with a bit of salt and chili
sauce. Harvesting them, however, requires caution. The palm
trunks bristle with needle-sharp, four-inch spines, like a giant
cactus, and punctures from those spines never stop itching.

Here was Chris's Funky Paradise in the Tinamastes Valley

Chris getting ready to surf Dominical

Oh, right, itching! I did a lot of that. Mosquitos weren't
really a problem but the jaquistas were murder. These are tiny
little biters that fly around in swarms and you can barely see
them or feel them biting. But at night those little bites become
a maddening, inflamed fire. Sitting by the creek one day,
scratching madly, I was playing with a little lump of red clay
and remembered that calamine lotion worked on my childhood poison
oak rashes by drying them out. I had a Eureka moment and
immediately stripped and slathered myself with a full-body clay
mask. The results were almost instantaneous, no more itch! And I
noticed that the clay kept the bugs away as well. With daily clay
masks, my skin became gorgeous. But I soon found that there is a
plant that works much better. Jackass bitters AKA tres puntas,
botanical name Neurolaena lobata, is a common weed in Costa Rica
and making a tea from those bitter leaves was excellent insect
repellent, even works great sprayed in the garden as an
insecticide and fungicide. Drinking the tea prevents parasitic
infection of all sorts as well as having many other medicinal
qualities.
A mile up the dirt road from the farm is the little village of
Tumbas, named for the many ancient tombs in the valley, often
unearthed when someone digs a hole for a septic tank. Apparently
this valley was quite sacred to the indigenous people. The
village is on a gravel road running down the mountain from
Tinamastes with just a church, a schoolhouse, and about a dozen
houses, and further down the road is the path up to the
incredible six-hundred foot Diamant Falls. Located near the
mountain town of Tinamastes, Diamant, at 200 meters in height, is
Costa Rica's biggest waterfall. Above that majestic waterfall is
a huge overhang cave with its own twin one-hundred foot
waterfalls cascading down in front of the opening. This is a
privately owned reserve and the cave is fitted out with beds, a
kitchen and full bathroom facilities. Staying the night in that
cave was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.
But this is the jungle and during the arduous hike up to
Diamante Falls, I was viciously attacked by a wild tolomuco!
(Imagine a giant black weasel the size of a dog.) I froze in my
tracks as it came charging at me out of the jungle, fangs
slavering, beady eyes filled with demonic malevolence! But for
some reason it veered off at the last minute and disappeared
through the trees. My Tico friend, Miguel, who was with me
laughed uproariously when he saw the look on my face and
explained that tolomucos are very smart and playful, making good
pets, and that I startled it as much as it startled me. Senor
Tolomuco was probably telling his friends about the crazy gringo
who attacked him! As I replayed the scene in my head, he did
indeed seem much more like a playful, grinning land otter loping
by than some bloodthirsty beast intent on tearing me limb from
limb.
Back in Tumbas, one enterprising lady cut a hole in her living
room wall and opened a roadside convenience store. She had a
rather pathetic marker-scrawled cardboard sign hung on her fence
and I thought it only fitting that the only business in town
should have a real sign, so I carved and painted a beautiful one
for her on a wavy plank of cedar: PULPERIA Los CIPRESES. She was
ecstatic and refused my refusal of store discounts.
Word got around. Everyone in town knew who I was and smiled at
me after that. I never even had to stick my thumb out when
walking up the steep mountain incline to the highway bus stop,
people would just stop and pick me up. The shopkeeper tried for
months to set me up with the schoolteacher. The schoolteacher put
me in touch with the owner of an adventure tour company who
offered to show me some waterfalls. I thought it curious on the
hike up that I had to get buckled into a harness....and then all
of the sudden I was rappelling down sheer waterfall cliffs! I met
all sorts of wonderful people, saw all sorts of incredible
things.
Anyway, that's how you get by and make friends in foreign
countries: give of yourself and don't be shy. If anyone has a
hankering to live in the tropics, I'd highly recommend Costa
Rica. There are cheaper places, but Costa Rica is largely free of
the crime, corruption and crushing poverty endemic to so many
other Latin American countries. It is a functioning democracy and
Ticos take great pride in it. You just don't see piles of garbage
everywhere and the police won't rob you. For single caretaker
men, most of the male residents of San Isidro de General live and
work in either the capitol, San Jose, or in the US, so there are
six women for every man in that city, just FYI.
Thank you so much, Gary Dunn, for your top-notch
service. Guess where I'm going to retire!

AN ALTERNATIVE TO COSTLY MEDICAL INSURANCE
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both
property owners and caretakers/housesitters, have discussed their
healthcare situation and possible insurance options/alternatives
with us. We recently dropped our current medical insurance when
the premiums jumped to $2,000 per month with a $12,000 annual
deductible. We switched to a $354 per month healthcare program
called Medi-Share.
I wanted to share some information with you about Medi-Share as I
thought you might be interested in their affordable healthcare.
Like us, you and your family could join their community of
250,000+ who share in each other's medical burdens. Since 1993
more than $2 Billion in medical expenses have been shared and
discounted by Medi-Share members.
With Medi-Share you and your family won't need to worry about
the mandate to purchase health insurance or pay costly penalties
and fees, since members are exempt through a special provision in
the Affordable Care Act.
If you would like to learn more, please go to
http://bit.ly/2gvMroU or please call Myles Lilley who is a Member
Development Specialist at Christian Care Ministry at 800-772-5623

I hope this helps!

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and
interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005,
was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse
ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a
cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. During the start
of the year 2005, the handwriting on the wall began and the books
closed on this historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then,
became my pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true
happenings during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the
open range while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into
usable cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later
in the other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among
wild cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin out in Arizonas beautiful,
natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although unusual, are
just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever dreamed of
being a cowboy, heres your chance to ride along with me as your
side-kick and saddle pard. You can view an entertaining
introduction with many colored pictures at lastdkcowboy.com or
you can write to me at lastdkslashcowboy@gmail.com
