CARETAKER OPPORTUNITIES

ALABAMA

HOUSESITTER/GARDENER needed in Helena, a suburb of Birmingham,
from October 1 to December 31, 2018. In addition to our three
bedroom/two bathroom home, we have beautiful gardens, so we are
looking for a housesitter to maintain both our house and gardens
while we are away. The climate of Helena is typical of the Deep
South. Our private house, including utilities, is offered to stay
in for free in exchange for about two hours a day of taking care
of our gardening needs. Our preference is for a single,
non-smoking person, who is financially secure since we are not
offering any compensation for this position. We received many
housesitter responses from our last ad in The Caretaker Gazette -
but not from housesitters who are able to do our gardening work.
We would appreciate hearing from housesitters who would also
enjoy some of our landscaping work out in our beautiful garden
area. Must be a non-smoker/drinker, with no pets, or children.
Please email your interest and reasons for wanting to take this
housesitting assignment, let us know your gardening background,
and include your references to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Thank you.

ALASKA

SLED DOG APPRENTICE/CARETAKER needed. Spend the winter in the
heart of the Alaska Range on the outskirts of Denali National
Park caring for sled dogs. The primary duty is to assist in the
care of our dogs. As a handler you will give food and water to
the dogs. Then you will clean the kennel. Afterwards, you'll need
to prepare and hook the dogs up for a training run, going on
training runs with or without supervision depending on
competence, and working with puppies. You will also complete a
variety of jobs to help us maintain the dogs, kennel, and
equipment. For instance you may paint and repair dog houses,
assist with building tasks, cut and stack firewood, repair gear,
etc. In general, we try to use each handler's strengths so while
you will have the opportunity to try many things, you will do the
most of what you are good at. Successful dog mushers, and
Alaskans, are jacks of all trades. The afternoon ends with
feeding the dogs and cleaning the kennel again. Housing is in a
private room in a private cabin. The cabin is a finished home,
but there is no running water. The shower and laundry facilities
are attached to our home. We are one of the finest sled dog
kennels in the state of Alaska. We expect the best of ourselves
and our handlers. We are interested in finding responsible,
capable individuals who are self-motivated, willing to learn, and
have a can-do attitude. Working at the Wolf's Den requires the
ability to approach daily chores with enthusiasm and
thoroughness. Experience not necessary, we will teach the right
person. We need help from September 1st to May 1st 2019. To learn
more, please visit XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Good Morning Gary, I wanted to follow up with you and let you
know that we have had a tremendous response to our ad and the
email that you sent out. As of this morning we have filled the
position. Thank you again for all of your help. I look forward to
working with you in the future. Cathy D., Belcamp, MD

Good morning Cathy, I appreciate your letting us know. Many
times our advertisers get so busy that they dont inform us
when their position has been filled. We look forward to working
with you again, too. Let us know if you ever need to publish any
future caretaker-wanted ads.

I see that you are now using Twitter to post Help Wanted ads for
The Caretaker Gazette. I hardly ever use Twitter, so does that
mean that I will be missing out on new positions that you post on
Twitter? Let me know. Thanks. Bob K. Rye, NY

Hi Bob, thanks for writing. The Caretaker Gazette's Twitter
page features new help wanted listings that have already appeared
in recent email updates that were previously emailed to all our
Gazette subscribers. The email updates that go out to subscribers
contain more detailed descriptions of the duties,
responsibilities, compensation, and contact information. In many
cases, our help wanted advertisers request that we feature a
summary of their ad and a photo on the Gazette homepage and
Twitter page - so they can obtain additional exposure for their
ads. As a subscriber, you do not need to respond to new postings
on our Twitter page - just respond to the positions that you
receive from the Gazette's email updates that we email to
you.

Please sign me up for another three years of my Gazette
subscription. I'm doing well since quitting my job last July, and
I'm still not working full-time by my own choice. Hope all is
well with you. Keep up the good work on behalf of us who wander,
but are not lost! Chuck M., San Diego, CA

Thanks for writing, Chuck, and thank you for your three year
renewal. I'm glad to hear that you're doing well. All is well
with us too. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for posting our help-wanted ad again, as our
housesitters failed us and we missed our flight today. We have
had some interesting responses from your subscribers, and will
maybe even get to go a couple weeks from now. You renewed our
trust in good intentions and good people. We are grateful for
that. Aloha Anya and Frank R., Hana, HI

Anya and Frank, we were glad to help you. I hope you were able
to take your vacation and leave your home and property in the
good hands of one of our subscribers.

Thanks to the Gazette for running my Situations Wanted ad, I am
nearing the end of a three month caretaking assignment in New
Mexico. Now that I am ready to look for another position, I am
curious - how do I become one of your Caretaker Profiles? Karen
O., Atlanta, GA

Karen, I am sure that our readers would be interested in
reading about your caretaking assignment in New Mexico. Any of
our readers who are currently involved in, or recently returned
from, a housesitting or caretaking assignment are welcome to
submit a profile of approximately 1,000 words along with two
clear photos. If selected, we will work with you to edit your

Profile have been offered positions by property owners who read
the Gazette.

HELP NEEDED outside of Logumkloster, a small town on the Jutland
peninsula in south Denmark. Because of a cancellation, we are
open for visitors yesterday. We hope we can inspire you to come
and share our days and give us a hand on our property here. We
are an open-minded family, who need a hand with some loose ends
on our modernized, old farmhouse. We are a Danish/Dutch couple,
Erik (72-years-old) and Gijs (52-years-old). We have two
children, who have left home, but our cats are still there. We
live in an old farmhouse, as we have done for twenty years now.
It got partially modernized and we try to be self-sufficient with
energy through geothermal heat and solar panels, but there are
some loose ends. Our home is five kilometers from Logumkloster,
which is a little village 25 kilometers from the German border.
We build everything ourselves, but need some extra hands because
age has set his footprint on our energy. We would like to get
some help for our sauna project; we want to make a sauna out of
the old furnace shed. Also, a part of the old stable which has
been used for chickens needs a new roof. And our vegetable garden
needs to be cared for. So if you have some experience with
bricklaying, carpentry, welding, and gardening, or are willing to
learn and you want to share your world with ours, then please
call us. We speak Danish, Dutch, English and German. We would
like you to stay for at least one to three weeks. If you are in
our area, please call XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

GERMANY

VOLUNTEERS needed in Hoisdorf, in the district of Stormarn, in
Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Nature, stillness and meditation -
work and deepen your spirituality at our meditation center
outside Hamburg. Our house is focused on providing an environment
to meditate, go inwards and reconnect with nature. It is a place
of stillness and peace, and perfectly suited for experienced
meditators and other experienced spiritual practitioners who
might also like to enjoy the natural surroundings. In the house,
we are two permanent residents and offer a couple of private
guestrooms. We are intense meditators and like to meditate for
three to four hours, daily (morning and evening meditations). We
expect from all volunteers coming to the house to focus on
intensifying their inner connection - whatever that means for
you: meditation, prayer, contemplation, deep bodywork, relaxation
techniques, long walks in nature, dream work, certain kinds of
reading ... This is a good place to go on retreat and we expect
volunteers to be experienced in this regard. You might be bored
quickly if you do not have your own things that you want to work
or focus on. We do not offer schooling or teaching. But the house
provides support for your own efforts in a multitude of ways.
Beginners in the spiritual quest or people unfamiliar with
turning inwards will find other places more suitable for them. We
are a small quiet place. We ask volunteers to leave after a few
days if they are not making use of the purpose of the house
(going inwards in some personal way, as described above).
Benefits: a peaceful garden with pond, large meditation room,
library, and a nature sanctuary for water birds is adjacent to
the property, with a great view! Expected help hours: 25
hours/week for free accommodation and organic vegetarian food.
Or: 15 hours/week for free accommodation only. In this case:
Please bring your own food or share in the costs. Work hours
start daily at 9.30 a.m. We are flexible to arrange the hours so
that you can have days off for sightseeing and recreation. But we
ask you to arrange your free days with us, as we do have days
when we depend on helpers' work. (Just for completeness: We
cannot provide health or accident insurance for any kind of
guests - that includes work and travel helpers). Accommodation in
double-/triple-bed room (mixed gender), non-smoking inside, and
no pets, please. Two cats also live in the house. But the guest
rooms are kept free of all animals. Currently, we are mainly
looking for one or two long-term helpers (six weeks or longer).
We consider a two-week trial period best for both sides. We plan
ahead for two months in advance, only. Please, in general, do not
contact us earlier than two months prior to your proposed arrival
date. Once we agree on you staying long-term you will receive a
single room. Short-term stays are also possible if you prefer
this. You would be of special help if you have expertise and
skills in one of the following: housekeeping, repair jobs,
maintenance or certain crafts - especially carpentry, and
gardening (permaculture know-how especially appreciated). Please

HAWAII

CARETAKER(S) WANTED. We are looking for an honest, dependable and
stable person, or couple, or family to help us take care of our
seven acre off-grid sustainable homestead on Papaya Farms Road in
the Kapoho Area of Lower Puna, on the Big Island. Yes - we are
very close to the great lava river (about a mile away) and we
might have to evacuate at short notice. The situation was too
much for the caretaker family who were here and they have left,
but we still need to maintain the place and are seeking
assistance. As a result of the current situation we are asking
for less work from our new caretakers than we usually do. We just
want to keep the place functioning and keep the jungle from
growing over the place. On our seven acres, we have about five
acres of which has been cleared of forest. We have a lot of fruit
trees growing. We have vegetable gardens which are producing some
great crops. We have two chicken coops which currently house 15
chickens. We have a pond stocked with Tilapia, and five sheep.
The caretakers' responsibilities are mainly in the following
areas:
Mowing, weed-whacking, weeding, mulching, composting;
Some basic building maintenance;
Keeping the fast-growing invasive species in check.
The person(s) suitable for the position will:
Be able to work with or without supervision.
Be strong enough to handle a variety of power tools and to move
heavy objects such as rocks and logs when needed.
Be handy. Being able to fix tools and equipment is not required,
but is a plus.
Have good communication skills.
Have at least one person available most of the time to deal with
any and all of the different kind of situations which arise in
off-the-grid living.
Not smoke tobacco or marijuana.
Appreciate the natural quiet of this area and will not wish to
pollute it with noise. We live in a very quiet neighborhood where
we greatly appreciate the sound of nature, and we would like our
caretaker(s) to respect that. In return for the work as
described, we offer the following accommodations: a 16 by 16
off-the-grid cabin with solar electricity, hot and cold running
water, refrigerator, and flush toilet, outdoor shower, kitchen
with two burner gas stove, outdoor area with picnic table and
many other great features. The place is quiet, private and
extremely beautiful. You really have to see it to appreciate it.
Plus we are close to the ocean, a natural warm pond, and many
other natural treasures. This is a work trade for accommodation
only. We do not offer any money as part of the deal, although you
will be provided some quantity of fruits and vegetables when
there is enough to share. Please reply by email to
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX with some information about you if you think
you are a good fit for us. Mahalo!

carrots and keep cows. This is the seventh year that
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX volunteers will have the unique opportunity
to get to know and explore this traditional Icelandic farm. There

FULL TIME PROPERTY MANAGER COUPLE NEEDED for a 160 acre property
north of Babb, MT, located approximately five miles from the
Canadian border and 12 miles from Glacier National Park. There
are four residences (the caretaker house and three vacation
rentals), a bunkhouse and a shower house (vacation rental) and
outbuildings including a newer 30X30 shop, an alpaca pole barn,
and an older 4-stall barn. All are in good shape, needing general
maintenance and repairs occasionally. The outbuildings need some
painting and repairs. The fences are up but need maintenance and
some replacement. There is also a lakeshore cabin 12 miles from
the ranch that needs interior work. Equipment includes three
ATV's, a new Kubota tractor with loader attachment, box blade and
brush hog, and a pickup for Ranch use. The equipment would
require regular maintenance and upkeep. There are seven alpaca
and a llama. The alpacas are sheared annually by a professional
shearer and their fiber processed. The Llama is sheared every
other year. The property consists of hayfields, a fenced horse
pasture with water, and native grass grazing. There are areas of
dense aspen. Most of the property is left wild to encourage
wildlife, as it is part of a wildlife migration corridor between
Glacier Park and the Sweet Grass Hills. The views are amazing.
All in all, it is a beautiful piece of property, with lots of
potential. I work remote on a rotating schedule and do not have
the time or skills to do the work needed. In addition to property
repair/maintenance, the caretaker would be responsible for
managing the vacation rentals which would include handling all
reservations and correspondence, greeting and working with guests
to ensure a pleasant stay, and providing housekeeping. A two
night minimum is required, and most guests stay three to four
nights, so it isn't a nightly turnover like a motel. You can
check the website at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX for details on the
vacation rentals, and reviews from previous guests. I am looking
for a couple who is self-sufficient in living/working in a remote
situation and has a positive attitude. Please be aware there are
long hours in the summer months. Property skills needed are basic
ranch skills including equipment operation and maintenance,
building maintenance and repair, barb-wire fencing and land
management including noxious weed management, animal care, and
the ability to relate to ranch guests. Skills needed to manage
the vacation rentals include guest services/hospitality
experience, strong administrative skills and background, strong
organizational skills, good verbal and written communication
skills and computer skills. Flowers and gardening skills, and
social media skills are a big plus. A valid driver's license is
required, and candidates must be drug free and pass a background
check. A passport is needed if planning to go into Canada. All
homes are smoke-free, and pets are acceptable if not disruptive
to the ranch guests. A two bedroom house would be provided and a
pasture if you have a horse or two. The house is all electric and
I pay up to $120/month for the electrical bill. A new well system
was installed (it is good water), and I pay for garbage hauling.
Satellite TV is available but not provided. The caretaker
residence is a comfortable frame house, all appliances including
a washer/dryer, hardwood floors, and full basement for storing
supplies, great views, approximately 1,040 sq. ft. each level.
There is a wood stove installed to keep the heating bill down in
the winter. I provide a cell phone and laptop with internet for
ranch business use and recordkeeping. I would like to get feeder
steers for beef and would provide the caretaker one-quarter
beef/year, and add chickens for fresh eggs. The property could be
as self-sufficient as a person would want. The position is
available September 1, 2018. If you are interested, please
forward a resume, references and a recent photo to
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX No phone calls please. Please include what
salary/compensation you would expect. Equal Opportunity
Employer.

PROPERTY CARETAKER PROFILE

From Italy to Hawaii
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Interests: Sabina: yoga, mindful meditation, volunteering at the
local shelters, flower arrangement, reading, hiking, kayaking
and, of course, cooking, especially baking. Vittorio: he has been
practicing Japanese martial arts for 20 years
Quote: Be the person your dog thinks you are.

	Sabina and Vittorio Santella

We are Sabina and Vittorio Santella, a couple originally from
Italy. Eighteen years ago, young and deeply in love, we moved to
the USA in search of adventure; ready to expand our horizons! We
are now 39 and 50 years old, respectively. The desire to work
together drove us to found S & V Services, providing property
management for high end estates on the island of Maui. While
providing management of a property, we met a family from Alaska,
who were on Maui vacationing. At the end of their stay, they
offered us a job in Alaska working for them. Our sense of
adventure along with the instant connection felt to this family
drove us to say yes. We believed this to be a short-term
employment opportunity, but not only were we captivated by the
raw beauty and majesty of the open wilderness, but also found
ourselves working for a family that we shared a sense of mutual
respect and gratitude with. We loved them and they us. When our
duties ended, after two years, which had included: Caring for the
interiors of private airplanes, providing services at remote
lodges, and all the more usual caretaking functions, we returned
to Maui. With the money we had now saved, we purchased and
renovated two houses and sold them for a modest profit. This
adventure was more valuable as a learning experience, than as a
profit-making venture.
One evening, while reviewing The Caretaker Gazette online, we
came across an ad for an experienced couple needed for a live-in
caretaking position on a new property of 15,000 square feet still
under construction in Maui, Hawaii. I immediately called the
number listed in the ad and left a message saying I was very
interested in applying for the position. We got a phone call back
after a week from one of the owner's representatives living on
the island. The phone conversation was very brief, basically he
asked us only to send a resume, current photos and a list of
references, saying he would get back to us in case we were
selected for the job interview. I rushed to send all the
necessary information that was asked for, and prayed to hear back
from them. A few weeks passed and to my surprise we received an
email message notifying us that we got selected to sit for a
preliminary face-to-face caretaker job interview. I was over the
moon! We met at the representative's office in Hawaii and talked
for about two hours, discussing our previous working experiences,
our character, and what expectations we had in applying for this
caretaker job and vice versa. He explained in a general view the
job requirements and the duties expected from us. We left the
meeting feeling confident and happy for having had this
opportunity and to have made it that far at least. He said that
they had interviewed more than 20 candidates and we were the top
runners.
Another week passed and this time we were contacted by phone by
the owner of the property, and he invited us to have a second
interview with him and his wife at the property. The meeting was
not that long, we were shown the house and discussed a little bit
in more detail about the requirements and the expectations they
had for us for this position. First and foremost, they were
looking for a couple with a sense of responsibility and
integrity. They were quite impressed by our references and work
history. Something that they were very adamant about was the
importance for us to care for their two golden retrievers, almost
more than the house itself. From the moment we saw the ad to the
moment we shook hands and agreed to our duties and salary it took
a good month. They made all the background checks and talked with
all of the references we provided. Initially we were given a two
month trial period where they would see if we were a good match
for them and also if it was something we were capable of and
could commit to. For the last 14 years we have cared for this
incredible estate on Maui. We have felt blessed to have had such
an opportunity. The house was still under construction when we
arrived so one of the requirements was for us to move in and be
flexible to work and live in a construction zone, with lots of
workers and contractors around every day until it was completed.
That required us to supervise the job and write a punch list to
give to the contractors to address.
The owners would typically spend four to six months on the
property during the winter months. Each day, the lady would phone
us when they had finished eating breakfast and walking the dogs
and we would meet with them in the kitchen and plan the day
ahead. Topics would be: people coming to visit, errand runs for
that day - post office, grocery shopping, dry cleaning,
scheduling the personal trainer or masseuse, washing the cars and
filling them with fuel, and most importantly, planning the dinner
meal.

The Maui estate where Sabina and Vittorio worked for 14
years

Sabina and Vittorio sitting in front of the Maui
estate

We would spend the morning cleaning the kitchen, cleaning the
owners living quarters, doing laundry and ironing, and all the
housekeeping work required. In the afternoon, we would spend time
in our office, responding to email, contacting people if some
last minute repair was needed, paying bills, and doing errands.
The holiday seasons were busier as all the extended family would
come to visit. We made daily trips to the airport during the days
before Christmas, so there was a full house, with lots of
laundry, cooking and baking, and a big Christmas dinner for about
30 people that required a lot of planning and shopping. All the
decorations had to be put up and a big Christmas tree in the main
house required days of decorating. The house got quite festive,
full of people and children, definitely my favorite time of the
year, even if it was a lot of work, it was definitely worth it
and we were always invited to celebrate it with them.
During the summer months, when the owners were away, most of the
major maintenance projects took place. Once again, the house
transformed into a construction zone. Every day, we scheduled
meetings with vendors, cleaned the house, including the windows,
washed and polished all the silverware, checked that everything
was in proper working order, and cared for the dogs.
For five years, until the estate was put up for sale, at the
request of the owners we ran a very successful and interesting
side business where over 100 weddings were held on the estate. We
learned a lot from this business, meeting the couples and taking
them on a tour of the property, handling all the paperwork,
bookkeeping, creating contracts, collecting deposits and
payments, coordinating with caterers, florists, etc., and
supervising to make sure everything ran smoothly on the day of
the wedding. I truly loved seeing all the creative ways that the
vendors made floral arrangements, food preparation, and
decorating.
We had a few major projects, all due to weather wear, and
especially because, being made mostly with expensive and exotic
wood, being so close to the ocean and the hot sun. Sanding and
coating all the wood railings and windows, garage doors and gate
was a project done twice a year. The outdoor furniture were all
teak and needed sanding and coating every year. We had to remove
and replace all the wood around the pool four times. The pool
house deck floor was also made of teak and the constant exposure
to the tropical weather caused major cracks that led to rain
leaking in the downstairs living area, starting a renovation
project that lasted eight months. The landscape required a lot of
attention as well. We replaced the entire irrigation system. Due
to a severe storm, big trees fell down damaging a side of the
fence and pulling out part of the irrigation system, another
major project for repair. A big sea swell washed all the way to
the driveway damaging the wooden gate, which we had to replace.
Paradise sometimes can be hell, when Mother Nature unleashes her
power, and we had severe storms that left the house bruised at
times.
The secret in taking care of this high end property and
succeeding is to truly care for it like it is your own. Although
it can be challenging at times, the rewards when everything works
well and seeing the smiles and appreciation of the owners, makes
it all worthwhile. Our suggestion for anybody thinking of doing
this job, is to really learn to think outside the box, be ready
to dedicate your time and effort to the end result. And never
give up, even when something seems impossible to accomplish, we
learned that there is always a way. Also it's easy to find
vendors who want to exploit the situation by overcharging for a
project just because they assume that the owner has a lot of
money. Do your research, ask around for the best possible help,
because when sometimes you can do a project and need someone to
hire, it's where even more extra dedication, caution and effort
is required.
The Caretaker Gazette is an excellent way to find your dream
job, that's where it started for us, we highly recommend
subscribing to it, because you never know where it can lead you.
Have faith, believe that there is someone out there who needs
someone just like you, and again faith, knowledge, experience and
humility are good ingredients to pave the way to care for and
live in someone's beautiful home in a paradise somewhere on this
beautiful planet. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Gary Dunn, for
publishing such a helpful newsletter. You are the best!
After fourteen years, this great adventure is unfortunately
coming to an end due to the fact that the Maui property has been
sold. So free again, we desire to travel and also offer our
experience and expertise to others. We offer to any prospective
employer our loyalty, honesty, experience and work ethic. We will
care for your home and property with great care and respect. If
you have animals that need care and love, for us that is a bonus!
We are conscientious, competent, trustworthy and quick to assume
necessary responsibilities without specific instructions. We are

AN ALTERNATIVE TO COSTLY MEDICAL INSURANCE
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both
property owners and caretakers/housesitters, have discussed their
healthcare situation and possible insurance options/alternatives
with us. We recently dropped our current medical insurance when
the premiums jumped to $2,000 per month with a $12,000 annual
deductible. We switched to a $354 per month healthcare program
called Medi-Share.
I wanted to share some information with you about Medi-Share as I
thought you might be interested in their affordable healthcare.
Like us, you and your family could join their community of
250,000+ who share in each other's medical burdens. Since 1993
more than $2 Billion in medical expenses have been shared and
discounted by Medi-Share members.
With Medi-Share you and your family won't need to worry about the
mandate to purchase health insurance or pay costly penalties and
fees, since members are exempt through a special provision in the
Affordable Care Act.
If you would like to learn more, please go to
http://bit.ly/2gvMroU or please call Myles Lilley who is a Member
Development Specialist at Christian Care Ministry at 800-772-5623

I hope this helps!

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and
interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005,
was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse
ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a
cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. During the start
of the year 2005, the handwriting on the wall began and the books
closed on this historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then,
became my pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true
happenings during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the
open range while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into
usable cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later
in the other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among
wild cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin out in Arizona's
beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although
unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever
dreamed of being a cowboy, here's your chance to ride along with
me as your side-kick and saddle pard. You can view an
entertaining introduction with many colored pictures at
