LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Hi Gary, I'm a long-time subscriber and if you remember me you'll
recall that I took several housesitting positions that were
advertised in your Gazette. I'd like to find out how I can put up
a Caretaker Profile story. I always enjoy reading these and think
it would be a good thing to show prospective employers. Thanks to
you and your team for everything. Jill S., San Diego, CA
Hi Jill, we profile different subscribers who can provide tips
and advice about their rent-free living lifestyle for our
readers. If you are living rent-free and can provide tips and
advice (nothing like a resume) - it would be nice if you can
email in this info for a free Caretaker Profile story in a future
issue of the Gazette:
Caretaker Profile:
Profile Title, Date of Birth, Address, Interests, Favorite Quote,
approximately 900 word Profile story, and two photos: a close-up
photo of you and then a photo of you on the property there.
Because we're on Twitter and Facebook, with your permission we
can feature a link to your Profile and photos on both sites as
well as our home page so your Profile will be seen by more
property owners.
I would like to continue staying connected with The Caretaker
Gazette as I may renew my subscription sometime in the near
future. I love your publication and for 17 years my life has been
blessed because of a position I found through your hard copy
subscription in 1999. Still caretaking, and still loving it!
Thank you! John H., O'Brien, OR
Hi John, it's great to hear from you! I appreciate your kind
words and thank you for sharing how the Gazette and caretaking
has had such a positive impact on your life. It's nice to hear
that you are still caretaking after so many years. I know many of
our subscribers would love to hear about your experiences so
please feel free to contact us again if you'd like to be profiled
in a future issue of the Gazette.
To everyone at The Caretaker Gazette, I want to let you know how
excited I am to find you online! I saw your ad in an old magazine
at a bed and breakfast and immediately went online to look up
your website. I am just delighted to see all the possibilities in
your Gazette! I've worked as a nurse and think this sounds like
such a great thing to do at this stage in my life. I'm getting
near retirement and ready for this new adventure. I am telling
all my coworkers and patients who are interested about you.
You've made possible some great opportunities for so many of us.
Here is my two year subscription for online and hard copy. I
think it will be worth every penny! Have a great day! Sue T.,
Tacoma, WA
Thanks for your message and subscription, Sue! We have many
other subscribers who are nurses and healthcare professionals so
I think you will be a great candidate for the caretaking
lifestyle. I appreciate your nice comments. Please keep in touch
and let all of us here at the Gazette know how things go for
you.
Hi Gary, in all my years of owning property this is the first
time I've ever considered using the services of a housesitter
(who will also petsit for me). I found out about your publication
through your website and it looked good so I thought I'd try a
Housesitter Wanted ad. Amazing results in a very short time from
so many interested and experienced applicants! Over two dozen
emails and they're still coming in. I've had such great replies
from people in the U.S. and Europe! It wasn't easy because they
all seem great but I finally made a decision today and will have
a housesitter here soon who can watch my home and dogs. I will be
happy to recommend your service to anyone as things have worked
out better than I hoped for. Thank you! Don B., Boise, ID
Hi Don, glad to see that the Gazette worked again! You join
many other property owners who have found great people through
the Gazette. Thanks in advance for spreading the good word about
the Gazette!

CARETAKER WANTED for a Mountain Ranch in Pollock Pines. I have a
two bedroom/one bathroom mobile home trailer available (the
trailer appliances run on propane) in exchange for help around
the ranch and building tiny houses on trailers. Also possible is
a live-in situation in my house for the right person. I have been
inundated with replies so when responding please describe what
abilities you have and work experience. I am leaning toward
retired people or somebody who would be around a lot but will
consider anybody who brings a lot to the table so to speak. Room
for horses over three acres already fenced for the caretaker.
There is also a very rustic cabin and plenty of trailer space
available. Looking for somebody with experience with horses or
people with carpentry/handyman skills and business management. A
MacGyver type of person would be a plus. Must be a self-starter
and it would be great if you have a lot of your own tools. A
great deal of common sense is essential for living on a ranch and
I can't stress that enough. There are two trout streams on the
property and plenty of places to garden. Unfortunately there is
no 420 growing here. An apple orchard over one hundred sixty
years old is still bearing sixteen different varieties of apples.
There are also raspberries, gooseberries and loganberries to be
harvested. I need help restoring the house that has half fallen
down, as it was built in 1869. The ranch is semi remote, located
five miles to the closest neighbor, but only fifteen minutes on
good roads to Pollock Pines with major shopping stores and
schools. There is excellent cell phone reception. The ranch is in
generator country which means you need to provide your own
generator as there is no electricity! We get quite a bit of snow
in the winter so a 4-wheel-drive is advisable. There are possible
job opportunities with the right people but nothing going on at
the present moment. I need motivated people who want to help get
the business going again and expand to build tiny houses on
trailers. I have enough lumber cut and dried to build 10. This is
an l64 acre timber property. I have sawmill, kiln and woodworking
tools. Would like to find somebody interested in helping expand
my lumber, cabinets and furniture sales. Also interested in
turning the ranch into an equestrian campground and give guided
horseback riding on the property and the adjacent thousands of
acres of US forest land. I do have other caretakers so everything
is not dependent upon just one caretaker. No drug or alcohol
abusers please. There is a background check required. Please
reply with your phone number to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

PROPERTY CARETAKER PROFILE
On the beach in Mexico: Mitchell and Patty
Date of Birth: October, 1966
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Interests: Hiking, traveling, gardening, home projects, reading,
and yoga
Quote: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and
narrow-mindedness." - Mark Twain
Mitchell and the book 'A Gifted Man' by Joseph the
homeowner.
We were on San Juan Island, Washington where we had just
finished a week-long caretaking job at a small cabin resort when
we saw The Caretaker Gazette ad for the position in Barra de
Potosi, Mexico. We immediately thought this would be a perfect
fit, especially since we had been in the Pacific Northwest for a
couple of months and were craving sunny warm weather. Almost
immediately, we responded to the ad with high hopes. Just before
we left for a camping trip on Orcas Island, the homeowner in
Barra (Franca) replied to our email asking for a recent picture
of me and Patty which we sent off right away. On Orcas we spent
another day or two trading emails back and forth with Franca. The
cell reception on Orcas was not good so I found myself standing
on picnic tables, on top of rocks, or anything else that might
improve the chance of an email getting through.
After a couple of days, Franca informed us we were chosen to
take the position with the caveat that we could get there within
two weeks at the most ("the sooner the better"). We packed up our
truck camper and raced to catch the next ferry back to San Juan
Island where we left some of our things, got all packed up and
the next day were on our way, heading south for Barra, some three
thousand miles away. Eight days later we arrived having traveled
some 1,500 miles in the US and another 1,500 or so in Mexico.
When we arrived at El Pez Enamorado, we walked around the
property, looking at the beach, beautiful plants and outside
showers (yes, more than one!) and just couldn't believe our luck.
The house was just a few feet from the ocean. Slowly, the reality
that we hadn't a clue started setting in...with no one there to
show us what to do or how things worked. We had a hand drawn
diagram of the property with locations for breakers, water
shutoff valves, etc., but that first week or two was a struggle.
We had both come down with a stomach bug picked up somewhere on
the drive to Barra de Potosi. On top of that, it was hot when we
got there. Really Hot! In a few short days, we had come from 20
degree sleeping bag weather to long nights in the eighties with
high humidity and even hotter days. Between being sick, the heat
and the water problems, we were questioning our decision to go
there. But, we started feeling better shortly and were getting
acclimated to the weather. We met the former caretakers and they
gave us tips about various things in the house. We started to
meet people in the village and began taking Spanish classes. The
property was wild and untamed when we arrived but little by
little, we got it under control which allowed us to simply
maintain from that point forward. We figured out ways to work
around the quirks of the two houses and how to live happily with
scorpions (we only found dead ones), mice/rats, lizards, water
bugs, roaches, snakes, bats, ants, wasps, wild dogs, and all the
other treats a tropical environment offers. We bought hammocks to
relax in, and hung them in coconut trees on the beach. In
Zihautanejo, we found the Mercado Municipal where we got fresh
fruits and vegetables for next to nothing and inexpensive meat
and seafood. Back at the house several vendors came by selling
various items: water and fresh baked bread daily, produce, and
tamales and ice cream. In the village of Barra de Potosi there
were small stores that sold anything else we might need as well
as a dozen or so small restaurants. Most days we walked on the
beach in the morning and then spent a couple of hours working in
the yard. Afterwards we worked on Spanish, went to class, or got
together later with people we'd met there. The Internet we had is
a 3G USB stick (basically a cell connection) so we didn't spend
much time online.
In December, our son Matthew came for a week's visit, which
corresponded with the celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe. On
the night Matthew arrived, we walked down to the village and
watched as a procession of the entire village, led by a group of
girls dancing in costume who stopped to offer a blessing on each
house. The following morning, all of the village pangas (fishing
boats) came together to receive a blessing from the village
priest. As we prepared to leave Casa del Pez, it sometimes felt
like we'd been there longer than three months but other times it
felt like we just got there. Days move slowly there, like
everything else...languid in the heat and humidity, pausing to
rest in the afternoon and then melting with the evening sunset.
But somehow, the weeks seemed to pile up on top of each other at
an ever quickening pace.
There were many things we knew we would miss when we left there
and many we took for granted. The people of course - but we
expect one day to cross paths again there or elsewhere with many
of our new friends. Of course we also miss our morning walks on
the beach, the ocean, the sun and sand, lying in the hammocks,
shopping at the central market, and living a slow paced life.
Nevertheless, with our time almost up, we awaited the arrival of
the new caretakers from Alaska. We gave them a brief orientation
and then headed north towards home.

will the restaurant reopen?" The person who rents this restaurant
could possibly also provide a breakfast service for the Inn.
