broadcasts result in great and quick responses but yours is the
quickest one yet! Congratulations.
Dear Gary, thank you for renewing my subscription and mailing out
the latest issue to me so promptly! I am probably one of the few
people left who prefers to receive mail and talk on the phone
(instead of email). Is there any way possible that I can receive
the new listings between issues? Thank you for all you and your
wonderful staff do! Margaret P., Los Angeles, CA
Hi Margaret, thanks for renewing your subscription to the
Gazette! We have a number of subscribers who, like yourself,

them. In order to receive our email updates (which are time

family member or friend and we'll make sure the updated listings

great publication! Fran R., Sparks, NV
Thanks for your message and ad, Fran. Our database of property
owner subscribers continues to grow so hopefully your revised
Situations Wanted ad will result in a job offer in your desired
geographic location.
Please change my mailing address and contact information. All
this has come about as a result of responding to one Gazette ad

am still interested your publication so I would like my contact
changed so I don't miss a single issue or update. Thanks for
making this opportunity available to me! Julie R., Sequim, WA
Thanks for writing and sending your updated contact information,
Julie. Congratulations on finding a position so quickly! It often

I'M LOOKING FOR A CARETAKER for my property in Davis Creek, CA.
This caretaking position is in exchange for rent. My property has
10 acres with two levels - upstairs it's flat and level, and
downstairs there's a creek to cool off in the summer. It's a
peaceful spot with beautiful views. The ideal candidate should
know how to do fencing, working with wood, tree trimming,
sagebrush removal and gardening, and not mind living in a remote
area. You need an RV or pop-up trailer in order to stay here.
There are no animals yet, but will arrive soon, which is why I
would like someone here overseeing everything when I'm gone
(working). Where I'm at is off-the-grid, so I substitute with
solar power, batteries, propane and candles instead of
electricity. So far, this has been a very pleasant experience.
Cell phones do work here. You can send and receive texts and
receive incoming calls. However, to make outbound calls, you may
have to go to Lakeview. I offer a quiet and peaceful living
arrangement for the right person with no drama or health problems
in exchange for the above-mentioned duties. A horse or a dog is
OK once we get the fence up. A pick-up works best out here. You
will need excellent references - at least three. The property is
about 35 miles north of Alturas, CA which is also about six
minutes from the Oregon border and tax-free shopping! To apply,
please mail your resume and references to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
(Contact information for these ads is available only to Gazette
subscribers). Thanks!

SEEKING A CARETAKER OR CARETAKER COUPLE for an off-the-grid
Colorado Ranch. Looking for a like-minded individual and/or

an Eco Village/Natural Healing Center and could eventually turn

out of town. The Ranch is located 20 miles west of Monticello,

HAWAII
ALOHA! We are looking for a couple to share a farm caretaker roll
as part of our sustainable permaculture farm and retreat while we
come and go for summer travels. The caretaker roll is an
opportunity to grow, learn and immerse in an established farm and
community. The exchange is available immediately through
September 30th or possibly longer for about 15 - 18 hours a week
per person. You will be on Sunday - Thursday, or Tuesday -
Saturday for about three to four hours a day. The situation
includes rent, utilities and a share of food from the farm as
well as the potential to generate income from farm sales. Some
sales are already established and there is room for more income
generation for self-motivated, inspired individuals. Ideally,
this position would be filled with folks who want to generate
income off the farm and/or do paid farm/construction work through
existing connections we have which could supplement their income.
The farm is located on 7.5 acres, on the slopes of Mauna Loa
Volcano with sweeping views of Kealakekua Bay and Honaunau's City
of Refuge on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are a small community
of people living on the land creating a conscious model of food
diversity, self-sufficiency and holistic living. We host many
folks from around the world as renters, exchangers, guests in our
guest house, and workshop attendees. We love inspiring a holistic
local lifestyle and being a working demonstration of how we can
do that. We have 15 years of experience in sustainable
agriculture and holistic living. On the farm we have dozens of
different types of trees and plants growing that are integrated
with our animals. Our animals include poultry, ducks, rabbits,
milking sheep and goats. We also have over 150 Macadamia Nut
trees. We are looking for inspired people who want the
opportunity to step into an established sustainable farm and
educational community and feel a sense of excitement and
engagement with the lifestyle and what it can offer. We would
love folks who want to connect with the local community, continue
to grow our collective networks, and share in a solution
oriented, fun, healthy lifestyle. We hope for open minded
individuals with a positive outlook on life who will bring
energy, skills and generative capacity to help the community and
the farm function well and flourish. We are looking for folks who
have a passion and curiosity for life, for cultivating
self-reliance, and for their own personal growth. In addition to
farming, we enjoy cooking, yoga, music, dance, qigong/neigung,
meditation, reading, swimming, snorkeling, hiking, exploring the
islands, traveling, learning about other cultures, etc. As a
caretaker some of your tasks will include feeding and watering
animals, maintaining the veggie gardens, mowing and weed wacking
and minor general upkeep of the farm and community spaces.
Because we have animals, there are daily morning and afternoon
activities that need to be tended to. Morning and afternoon "Land
Dance" is when the animals are fed and watered, so the day is
split, but afternoon timing can be flexible. Housing is in one of
our rustic 12 x 20 cabins with plywood floor. There is a shared
living room, an outside heated shower as well as inside bathroom
and kitchen facilities. The income that can be generated from the
farm may include macnuts, goat milk and cheese, fruit, chickens,
ducks, value added products, etc. We already have relationships
with several restaurants as avenues for sales and farmer's
markets. If this sounds like a good potential fit, we would love
to hear from you! Please write us with a resume or letter of
interest and experience as well as a photo doing something you
love. You can check out the farm at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact
information for these ads is available only to Gazette
subscribers) Please email XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact
information for these ads is available only to Gazette

ALOHA, if you recently responded to my similar post and did not
get a reply, please try emailing again. I have a six acre
homestead on the forest reserve near Mountain View and am in need
of a caretaker or two for the farm. This position is unpaid, but
comes with an off-grid house, solar power, and vehicle. I am
basically looking for someone or a couple who can weed whack,
feed/water animals daily, and keep my garden beds free of weeds.
There are other random tasks as well, but no more than a couple
of hours of real honest work per day. There is an amazing lava
tube on the property and it is used as a venue for movie
productions and events. I have pigs, goats, ducks and a dog. The
property will be featured on an upcoming episode of House Hunters
International. My ideal caretakers would be trustworthy,
responsible, not afraid of rain, independent, drama free, and not
be complainers. I am not looking to take care of anyone, I am
looking for people to take care of my farm. I am a 29-year-old,
male, combat veteran, ex-fireman, world traveler, and an
agriculture major. I really enjoying having fun and love my life
a lot. I enjoy traveling and will be gone often. This is a
long-term position. To be clear: I cannot afford to pay anyone
for any work. I have had trouble with the past caretakers feeling
that because they did more work than I asked while I was away
that it was acceptable to compensate themselves with my
belongings. I really am looking for someone to take care of my
things, but not to take them. The house isn't amazing and it can
get pretty lonely out in the woods. Not to mention it rains a lot
in the rainforest and the amenities aren't great! Please keep
that in mind before considering this position. Please email

BIG ISLAND VOLUNTEERS needed. I will need help with miscellaneous
tasks as well as general building, painting, etc. Good character,
willing hands to help, but most importantly a great attitude,
excellent work ethic, responsibility, reliability, consistency,
honesty, openness, a kind heart and curiosity to learn in the
ongoing development of this place. You certainly do not need to
be superman or super woman. You must be willing to commit no less
than a week although I do prefer two weeks commitment. This is
not a place for Mr. Prince or Miss Princess. If you choose to
come here is because you are interesting in working, learning and
growing as a whole individual and human being. One big meal a
day, perhaps two provided. Please know and be aware that you will
be responsible to prepare your own meals and possibly the hosts,
particularly if you love to cook. I am mostly vegetarian but have
no problems with meat eaters if that is your choice, as long as
you buy your own meat. I live on the Big Island, 45 miles south
of Kona (tourist point), 75 miles from Hilo, 45 miles from the
ongoing erupting volcano, and 15 miles from South Point - one of
the most beautiful places in Hawaii - and Green Sand beach. My
property is located at over 4,000 feet elevation and with an
overwhelming ocean view. The temperature is spring-like, commonly
pleasant winds although strong at times. I live a simple life
with water catchment, solar power and compost toilet. There are
beautiful and clear skies here, and most importantly, it is
absolutely quiet. No cars, therefore, no traffic, yet, easy
access. No close by neighbors. Plenty of beautiful spots around
the area. A National Volcano Park gate just two blocks away. The
Kula Kai Caves just down below the subdivision. I am located on a
beautiful 80-year-old lava flow with pukas and caves. Totally
"off the beaten path" and 100% dedicated to self-sustainable
living and close to zero footprint. It would be appropriate to
mention that my set up is designed to be self-sufficient with
minimum resource demands from nature. Perfect for those eager to
learn how it is possible to live and be environmentally friendly
and yet have the comfort and dignity of well living. As long as I
can and there are no other priorities at hand and you have of
course have shown signs of good work ethics, I have no problem to
drive you somewhere of your particular need, but understand you
will need to pay in advance for the necessary gas required to
cover the trip. You most love simplicity, nature and solitude to
come in this direction. If you want to get out of a rat-race life
style, or if you are spiritually inclined, this could be a great
space for rejuvenating, nurturing your soul, introspection,
contemplation, meditation, and self-exploration. And I am here to
help you and support you. There is nothing more beautiful than to
meet each other - open, unprotected and free. But if you like the
crazy fun time, ongoing activities to keep you busy, plenty of
entertainment, etc., you could get very bored, since I do not
have broadcast TV, Internet or any possible items to keep you
entertained and distracted etc. In the morning I do have my time
alone to meditate, introspect, and start the day from then on. My
life ultimate purpose and dedication and interest is for
self-introspection, peace and internal freedom. I encourage and
support whoever comes in this direction to create that time for
themselves as well. This land is a great support for nurturing,
healing, and falling in love within yourself in the purest and
deepest way and in this life time. The Mauna Loa can be your
witness. While I do not judge anybody with any kind of drug
inclination, I do not surround myself with drugs or people who do
drugs or heavy alcohol, therefore, drugs are not allowed on this
property. In short; you are welcome, drugs are not, either in
your pocket or in your body. Please call Tino Rivera, a Latino
bilingual 50-year-old guy (Spanish-English) at

humanity become free and discover ultimate Truth. May we all see

ALOHA! WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS through February
2016. Our backpacker hostel, XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact
information for these ads is available only to Gazette
subscribers), is located directly on the edge of the Blue Lagoon
and the Pacific Ocean in beautiful historic Kapa'a Town on the
island of Kauai. Kapa'a was voted one of the top 10 most
beautiful towns in America. Kauai is the "Garden Isle" and is by
far the most beautiful of all the Hawaiian Islands, in fact more
beautiful than all the others put together. Kauai has a lush
tropical environment with a cooling Pacific Trade Wind breeze
coming through the hostel. People travel here from around the
world to hike some of the most amazing trails in the world (see
Na Pali Coast and Waimea Canyon). The sun and moon rise come up
directly in back of the Kauai Beach House Hostel, an amazing
experience every day, just so you can begin and end your day in
this tropical paradise of Kauai in blissful surroundings. We are
looking for some great helpers to join our staff! You must be
outgoing, energetic, hard-working, and able to show the "aloha
spirit" of the island. We will set up a Skype interview to get to
meet you and see if you would be a great fit! We currently are
looking for helpers with hostel experience (preferred but not
necessary). Our volunteers do a variety of tasks, although mainly
it involves any of the following: housekeeping - cleaning the
hostel and kitchen, bathrooms, pulling sheets off beds,
organizing the hostel, etc., reception (two month minimum stay) -
checking people in and out, ensuring people have paid, answering
the telephone, taking cash payments and running credit card
payments, maintenance - the tropical environment keeps us busy
with upkeep. This job would be varied depending on the needs. If
you have any maintenance experience, like painting, plumbing,
electric, let us know! But as long as you are a good helper in
any category you will be welcome if you are ready to learn,
because the experience you get here is an actual training in the
hospitality field, and the many facets in the operation and
running of a hostel. In return for your help of approximately 21
hours per week or less, you will enjoy a nice bed and your
utilities, including of course hot showers, full kitchen and
other freebies like Wi-Fi. We all help prepare a weekly staff
meal paid for by the hostel. We also provide volunteers with
basic staples like rice and beans to add to your meals everyday
if you like. When they leave, Guests often leave fresh food for
the staff. There is a four week minimum stay, but we prefer
people to stay for two to three months. Longer term help could be
discussed after you have been here for three months. The
island-wide bus service stops in both directions just outside of
our hostel, so everything is within reach. There is also an 11
mile bike path that touches our property right outside of our
hostel. It runs right along the edge of the ocean; it is
spectacular! You can walk to 20 restaurants; there are 60 in
Kapa'a Town, and many are international. There is also live music
in Kapa'a seven nights a week at different pubs and clubs. Please

ICELAND
VOLUNTEERS needed from June 1 to June 12, 2016. Volunteers will
be working on hiking trails near the Katla Volcano in the
southernmost municipality of Iceland, in Vík í
M'rdal. Volunteers will mostly be doing environmental work in the
area. The main tasks will be to mark hiking trails around the
town and on Hjörleifshöfi island/mountain. The
inhabitants here live in constant threat of volcanic eruptions.
The area was hit during the recent eruptions in
Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 and Vatnajökull in 2011 and
got covered by ashes, but the natives here are strong minded and
'folded up their sleeves' as the Icelanders express it and proved
the common belief that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
Volunteers will also help to prepare tourist destinations for the
summer and do some painting in the town. Other tasks will be
cleaning and beautifying the area and some vegetation work. The
work can get physically demanding and might require a good
physical condition. Weather conditions in Iceland are
unpredictable, so be prepared to experience all kinds of weather
and be sure to bring warm clothing since most of the work will
take place outdoors. Volunteers will be hosted in a local house
in the town of Vík. Volunteers will sleep on mattresses on
the floor. Please bring your own sleeping bag. The house is
equipped with a kitchen. Volunteers will share the duties of
preparing food, cooking meals and cleaning. There is no shower in
the local house, but volunteers will have free access to showers
in the local swimming pool. A short hike within the close
vicinity of Vík is sure to satisfy all serious nature
lovers and bird watchers. Vík and its surroundings is one
of the main bird life areas in Iceland. To learn more, please

Our Grand Adventure and Transition
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these ads
is available only to Gazette subscribers)
Dates of Birth: Victoria Baker: 8/6/59; Tom Graves: 12/16/52
Interests: Victoria: making jewelry, crafts, hiking,
horticulture, mountain ballad singing, sea glassing. Tom: writing
fiction, climate change, solar electricity, out of the ordinary
projects.
Quote: "Bloom where you are planted."
Tom Graves and Victoria Baker
We are Victoria and Tom. Here is a bit of our background and a
short summary of some of our caretaking adventures: Tom grew up
on a farm in Indiana, surrounded by the Amish. He joined the
Navy, attended Indiana University then joined the Peace Corps
where he lived with indigenous people in southern Mindanao,
Philippines. Victoria grew up in rural east Tennessee in a small
mountain community until she went to Berea College in Kentucky
where she studied agriculture. We met at a contra-dance in
Asheville, North Carolina. Soon we had family and farm. Victoria
stayed on their homestead with the children and started her own
business, featuring value-added products from the farm, including
organic edible flowers for restaurants. Though trained in solar
electric, Tom became a licensed electrician and installed mostly
conventional systems as the demand increased with development in
western North Carolina. He also helped on the farm and took on
the renovation of an old Victorian house they bought. We lived in
the house Tom renovated for a couple of years before our kids
took off for college. As a couple we maintained our two
properties and businesses but had little time for anything else.
It is hard to describe how we made the leap from all our
responsibilities into the unknown; other than we were both ready
for a change. Once we made the decision, things just seemed to
fall into place. Was it risky? Yes! However, we have no regrets
and are so grateful we ventured out to make a difference not only
in our own lives but in others as well.
From the beginning, we were intent on win-win situations.
Throughout our travels, we were supported in many different ways.
We rented our house and farm and trusted friends took care of our
mail and maintenance issues. To be able to move into homes, we
could travel light, save money and experience real communities,
not just visit as tourists. Our stays lasted from six weeks to 10
months. Most of our opportunities included interesting homes,
transportation and sometimes the company of sweet pets. We had
the privilege of experiencing amazing libraries, private and
public, often learning the history of the culture in which we
were immersed. We sought out farmer's markets where we were able
to get the best food and make some wonderful contacts.
The synchronicities that led us from one place to another or to
opportunities to meet people with information we needed were
truly uncanny. The basic structure of using The Caretaker Gazette
for planning was invaluable as was the flexibility for winging it
from time to time. We found a renewed trust in humanity while
realizing our responsibility in keeping wise and even guarded, if
need be. We never encountered a violent act or theft. The
excitement of interesting people, new landscapes and cultures
became our most valued stimulus. We were honored to be trusted
with people's homes, vehicles and beloved animals. The
satisfaction of helping to create a mutually beneficial situation
was affirming and encouraged us to continue our journey.
After a couple of years with both kids in college with
scholarships and our properties rented, we took off for Costa
Rica on the Pacific coast. Tom worked on multiple house, ground
projects and built a small greenhouse of bamboo for Victoria to
propagate tropical plants the landowner had requested. It was a
wonderful start to our great caretaking adventure! We then
travelled to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica where we lived on a
farm. Again, Victoria planted a garden and Tom fixed up the
house, making it more desirable for a rental property.
After our children graduated college, we accepted a
house/pet-sitting gig in Puerto Rico. Victoria maintained and
added to a small garden on the property. Tom busied himself with
electrical, house projects and writing. Other short term
pet/house sitting opportunities arose nearby and when our son
joined us, we seized the opportunities. Our son lived and worked
on the island long after we left. Our daughter joined our son as
we went on to New Zealand, Australia, the Philippines and the
coast of Oregon. We kept the house tidy in New Zealand for weekly
showings as it was on the market. Tom's solar electrical
experience came in handy during the Australian off-grid housesit.
In the Philippines, we volunteered at a college which provided
housing and Tom was able to return to the place where he had been
as a Peace Corp volunteer...30 years prior. Before returning
home, we spent a sweet six weeks readapting to the U.S. on the
beautiful Oregon Coast where we cared for a lovely home and three
elderly pets in a picturesque setting.
Our adventure lasted almost four years. We are back home now with
family and friends and are somewhat transformed and even more
grateful for what we have. We have opened up our renovated
Victorian pebbledash house to fellow travelers as a vacation
rental decorated with mementos from our travels. We visit with
family and friends and keep in touch with friends in far flung
places across the globe.
The Victorian home renovated by Tom and Victoria
MAINE
HELP NEEDED in a farmhouse in Downeast Maine. Our farmhouse is in
a rural setting, in Washington County surrounded by forest,
farmland, lakes, and a spectacular sea coast. Our Farmstead is
totally organic and vegetarian and we have large gardens. Most of
last year, and so far this one too, we have been completing the
renovation of our home, so there are still little jobs to get
done in the house while out in the yard there are chickens and
vegetable plots to care for. In addition in the spring and summer
we have several building or landscaping projects in progress
where help is appreciated and during the quieter months the work
may also include some general house and yard cleaning, snow
clearance, fire wood cutting and stacking and other preparations
for the winter. If you are looking for somewhere to hang out for
a while in a fresh and interesting location and have a good
attitude towards work and communication then we think we should
appeal. This is not a paid position, the position is a volunteer
position and free accommodation is provided during the volunteer
period. The volunteer commitment is generally 20 to 25 hours a
week except in the three winter months when it may drop to about
10 hours a week. We're not very formal but as you will be sharing
our home with our children occasionally when we stay at the
property, we do require a photocopy/scanned picture of a legal
Photo ID (driving license, state ID, or passport) to be supplied
before arrival as proof of identity. Accommodation maybe in the
main farmhouse, in an off-the-grid caretaker's cabin close to the
farmhouse, or Flower cottage on a property nearby. Please email

NORWAY
INTERESTED IN SELF-SUFFICIENCY? Want to help build a community?
Love the sea? On an organic farm a few hours north of Oslo, our
collective is for anyone keen to learn, share ideas, and work
hard. We are building a sailboat and when she is finished we want
to sail the world, visiting other eco-villages, collecting
knowledge and traveling in the most eco-friendly way possible.
There are lots of very exciting things happening at Sailing the
Farm right now. We are happy to report that after many long and
character-building years of boat-building, we're well on our way
to sailing later this year. Here's an overview of what's been
happening up here lately:
- Our aluminum Colin Archer sailboat is taking shape. She is
starting to look like a boat, and a good looking boat at that.
She is as yet unnamed and suggestions that we call her The
Unsinkable have fallen on deaf ears. Any and all naming
suggestions are welcome!
- We have begun to machine sheaves for the boat. Our red sails
arrive soon so it's all go, go, go in the workshop these days.
- The heads is progressing quickly and soon it will be possible
to take a shower on board. Our Belgian volunteer has fashioned
fancy toothbrush holders for all future sea gypsies.
- Last week we cut open a section of the boat shed so that we can
move the engine on board. This will be a huge milestone for the
project.
- Recently, we had our first official government visit. We are
happy to report that she passed with flying colors.
- Our volunteers have started watching movies on deck every
Thursday night. Their 'Movies on Board' program is limited to
sailing movies (of course). They've watched '180 Degrees South'
and 'All is Lost' so far. Both come stamped with The Sailing the
Farm seal of approval. If you've any sailing movie
recommendations, please send them on to us!
- Some of our current volunteers/gluttons for punishment are
training for the Lillehammer half-marathon. At the moment they
are getting up at 6:30am to run in the woods before tucking into
a breakfast of hearty porridge and a day of boat-building. Some
even manage to fit in a spot of meditation before breakfast.
- We have started to turn the potato field. Our bathroom has been
transformed into a temporary nursery while we wait to start
planting. Our very versatile bathroom is also home to seven
chirpy baby chickens! Our long-serving captain's To-Do-List is
diminishing every week, but there's a lot of hard work still to
do. We'd love to welcome more volunteers (old and new) this
summer. A can-do attitude and lots of enthusiasm are the only
skills we require (though more specific skills are very welcome
also). So if you are free and can commit to a month, please get
in contact with us ASAP so that we can book you in to help. There
will be a launch party in Oslo later on this year when she takes
to the water. Please send an email to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
(Contact information for these ads is available only to Gazette
subscribers) explaining why you would be interested in our
community and please place this in the Subject Line: SEA GYPSY
APLLICATION so we know you have been reading this. Love from
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these ads is
available only to Gazette subscribers) - a sea gypsy tribe of
tomorrow!
