veggies and pizza, so whatever you like. Vegetarians are welcome
when our gardens are producing. We are on well water. You can
horseback ride, fish, swim, boat, hunt, hike, gold pan or go to

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX is a not-for profit
organization geared toward converting the well-worn words
"sustainability" and "community" from pretty flowers to delicious
fruit. We are in the genesis of building a self-reliant,
ecologically conscious, and holistically healthy community on a
stretch of 64 acres, 26 miles west of Tucson. One of the
actual steps we are currently taking is the creation of a (circa)
1/4 acre food forest. This edible landscape will consist of
climate-adjusted boreal fruit trees as well as some of the prize
canopies of the Southwest. Aside from containing a significant
area for annual gardening, it will also be home to several
high-value indigenous and naturalized medicinal herbs. This food
foresting initiative will be prototypic of a considerably larger
version slated for several acres on our land. In essence, we are
beginning to produce our necessary resources on-site. Together
with our neighboring eco-village, we are also exploring various
natural building methods including tepees and adobe. Our land,
with its expanse of mesquite trees and medley of cacti, is
reminiscent of that virgin West characteristic of a much earlier
America. During the day, in every distant direction one can
behold a mountainous horizon. During the night, every up-turned
face is beheld by a sea of stars. Our space is indeed a small
wonder. We welcome compassionate, inquisitive, and energetic
self-starters willing to better themselves and impact the world
in a productive way. In exchange for the contribution of diligent
work by self-motivated volunteers, we provide modest, rustic, yet
comfortable accommodations. Facilities consist of travel trailers
provided with electricity, propane stove, and refrigeration, a
one-person bunk house, and tent camping. Two Internet-enabled
community computers are available and a fairly reliable Wi-Fi
signal for those possessing laptops. If what you've read
intrigues you, don't hesitate to reach out to us for a chat and
possibly arrange a stay. We're accepting volunteers during all
seasons. Please call "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact
information for these ads is available only to Gazette
subscribers."

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hi Gary, I'm just back from sunny Spain where I led geology trips
for the last month. Our Cascade mountain snow is melting, so
about time to start mining again in the Northwest. We're still in
touch with several of the fine folks we've met and hired through
the Gazette, going all the way back to the early 1990's. Larry
(Spruce mine caretaker two years ago) tells me that he's written
an article for you about his experiences. We ask all our
caretakers to leave a note for us and future caretakers. A couple
of my favorites: "The life of a wilderness caretaker: when you're
hungry, pick a salad of miner's lettuce, huckleberry, and wild
mushrooms. When you're thirsty, sip from one of the cool springs
bubbling from the ground. When you're tired, recline on the soft
moss under a 500-year-old cedar. When there's work to do, marvel
at the crystal sculptures Mother Nature has left in this magical
place." Cat, 2005. "I've never worked so hard or loved what I was
doing as much as I did during two summers in the Middle Fork
Valley. I was in the best shape of my life when I left, the
result of daily hiking 1/2 mile straight up. Living in an old
growth forest is: spectacular, calming, grounding, and dark."
Joe, 1996. "My name is D. Swan, and I hail from Racine. I lived
in this cabin, and did nothing but dream" Dan, 1997. If you'd
ever like an article from a long-time Gazette advertiser and
employer of caretakers, I'd be happy to provide one for you. Best
regards, Bob J., Ravensdale, WA

Hi Bob, thanks for your email. It's great to hear from you. You
can read about Larry's experience as your caretaker on page 8 of
this issue of the Gazette. Larry titled his Caretaker Profile
story: "A Mountainous Occasion". Hope you continue to find great
folks through our publication.

We are so pleased with the amazing response to our email ad in
the Gazette for help with our property in Costa Rica. We got over
100 responses and found someone to do the caretaking and a list
of other possible applicants if something unforeseen happens!
Just wanted to say what a great resource this is and how happy we
are we have it at our fingertips. Sincerely, Gwen B., Athyn, PA

Thanks for your message, Gwen. Glad to hear you had a great
response to your ad and were able to find help for your property
in Costa Rica.

Hey Gary and team, just a quick note and change of address for
you. I'm off on another caretaking gig thanks to your great
publication. April M., Sacramento, CA

Thanks for the update, April. You are able to change your address
yourself anytime you log into your account. Please let us know if
you need any help in logging in and best of luck on your new
assignment.

Gary, thank you so much. I have found a housesitter. My only
difficulty was trying to choose just one as I got so many replies
from fantastic people. I have been telling anyone who will listen
how amazing this service is. This is truly the way forward for
people wanting to travel for both parties, and again many thanks.
Jennifer L. Dublin, Ireland

Thanks Jennifer, I'm glad you discovered the Gazette and received
so many great responses from so many qualified people. Thanks for
spreading the good word about the Gazette! It's a great way to
travel and experience life in different locales.

AUSTRIA

WE ARE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE to help run and entertain our guests at
a Ski Lodge, a sometimes lively but always friendly Alpine
backpackers lodge. We are located in the Austrian Alps amongst
some very picturesque scenery. We are about 45 minutes from
Innsbruck and 90 minutes from Munich. In return for board and
accommodation, helpers will be involved with turning over and
cleaning rooms as well as bar work and helping out with BBQ's,
when required in the evening. This will be through October
initially but also with the possibility of staying on for the
winter ski season where the slopes are a two minute walk from our
front door as well as all the expected Après that is
synonymous with skiing in Austria! In summer, guests like to go
hiking, paragliding, swimming, mountain biking as well as skiing
and snowboarding on the Glacier. There will be ample opportunity
do this and this would also particularly suit a skier or
snowboarder who may be required, if they so wish, to take guests
to the glacier and enjoy the snow with them for the day. The
Wildschönau Valley, where we are located has much to offer
including all its adventure activities. A work day is typically
three to four hours long and we do our upmost to ensure those
with us are well looked after and happy as we firmly believe this
adds to the atmosphere or our Lodge. Banter is always encouraged
for a lively atmosphere particularly in the bar during the
evening. To this end we certainly encourage helpers to mingle
with guests. They are backpackers from all over the world and
most likely will have much in common with yourselves and travel
stories to share. We like to think of ourselves as very fun,
approachable and friendly and it is important that you buy into
this. We look forward to welcoming you! Please call
"XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact information for these ads is

FARM HELP needed. Our farm is located on one of the most
beautiful parts of the Big Island, just a few miles from ocean
access for swimming and snorkeling and important Hawaiian
historical sites. At an altitude of 1,500 ft, we have cool nights

overgrown areas and removing vines from macnut and fruit trees.
It is very rewarding work. There is some macnut and fruit picking
that also needs to be done. We are also in the process of
restoring the farm house which means conditions rather like
indoor camping with very limited access to electricity and
outdoor showers. We ask approximately 20 hours a week work. We
provide occasional meals and basic food stables but you will need
to be able to provide much of your own food. Some fruit is ready
to be enjoyed by our helpers. Non-smokers and no drug users only.
We also run a small bakery operation with several weekly farmers
markets for additional work opportunities for those who like that
experience. This takes us half way around the Big Island each

CARETAKER PROFILE

A Mountainous Occasion
Date of Birth: 01/23/1956
Interests: Developing presence, realizing my oneness with the
universe, healthy food, healthy living, writing, photography,
music, all outdoor sports, working to live as opposed to living
to work, simple living, and mini houses
Quote: "But do not ask me where I am going, as I travel in this
limitless world, where every step I take is my home" Dogen

Larry Gilson scanning the high ridges for Mountain Goats and
Black Bear

When I began subscribing to The Caretaker Gazette in 2010, I was
living a dream-like life near a beautiful beach in Florida. I've
always been adventurous though, and have long felt the urge to
write, and I had been working full-time long enough I was
starting to look toward the far horizon. Having met a
spontaneous, fun-loving, adventurous person who also had creative
urges, I couldn't help but dream of a life in which we were free
to pursue our creative instincts. Since we were too young to
retire, property caretaking seemed the perfect solution, but like
most, we had a lot of baggage. It took over a year to pay off our
debts and shed our excess belongings, but we eagerly scanned
every issue of The Caretaker Gazette and were ready to roll in
the spring of 2012 when we found an ad stating: "Mountain man (or
couple) needed...$700/month for one hour of steep hiking
daily...off grid cabin to live in....May to November." We
responded and before we knew it, we had a new position, 3,500
miles away in the mountains of Washington State. A few weeks
later, we had said goodbye to our coworkers, packed our pickup,
loaded up Jack the cat and were rolling away from our sunny home.

The job was with a corporation which owns a crystal mine about 25
miles out of North Bend, Washington. When we arrived in North
Bend on the first of May it was pouring rain! Everything about
that first trip out to our new quarters, including a road which
closely resembled a bombing range and the extremely steep
mountain slopes rising into the clouds around us brought home the
fact we weren't at the beach anymore! I grew up in Oregon and was
quickly reminded of several important ingredients to a life in
areas prone to gray skies and wet, cool weather...a wood stove, a
good supply of dry wood and an upbeat partner; fortunately, I had
all three. It rained steadily the first four days of our stay.
After just a couple of days of work however, we were settled into
a now-warm, somewhat-organized cabin and Jack the cat had the
resident mouse population on the run. On the fifth day, the sun
came out and I knew we would be OK.
Our job for most of the season was to simply be a presence at the
mine site and to represent the owners should any uninvited
collectors show up. Getting to the mine site provided some
fairly-rigorous exercise on a daily basis as it involved a
two-mile uphill hike or bike trip along a road, then an arduous
climb up a mountain trail that gained 700 feet in a half mile.
Our responsibilities, however, left us plenty of time to explore,
enjoy the local hot springs, bathe in the 42-degree river, write
or simply sit and enjoy the beauty and stillness around us.
It's hard to describe the experience of living for months in the
woods miles from civilization with a single word, but 'idyllic"
comes close. We didn't become friends with the local black bear,
but ran across him regularly enough to develop a neighborly
respect for one another. We also encountered a young mountain
goat on our first trips to the mine, but he was shy and soon
moved to less-traveled places. We enjoyed our weekly trips to
town, our potlucks with our friends at the hot springs and
meeting hikers passing through the area, but the quiet moments
were my favorites. Laying in our cabin listening to the rain
pattering on the metal roof a few feet over our heads or to the
birds waking up in the woods around us at sunrise, sunning
ourselves on the jumbled rocks of an old avalanche and sitting by
the river warming up after our baths were moments marked by few
words, but ones forged indelibly in my memory.
When mining season began in August, we were in great shape having
hiked the trail nearly 100 times by that point and began serving
as what we titled "American Sherpas." While heavier supplies
were dropped in by helicopter at the beginning of the season,
food, beer and any other items that needed to be brought in later
were packed up the trail...much of it by the resident
packers...us. Additionally, crystals were packaged at the mine
site and packed down the mountain a box or two at a time, along
with whatever else needed to be hauled out. Between loads, we
assisted at the mine site, collected loose single crystals, did
some trail work and constructed a new helipad.
The best part of the mining season was getting to know our
employers...a small group from widely-varied backgrounds brought
together by a love for mineral collecting. Much of our contact
was with the original owner of the claim, who is not only a
life-long mineral collector, world-traveling geologist, educator
and walking encyclopedia of information regarding (especially)
minerals, but also an extremely personable man and great
storyteller with an endless supply of material. My partner and I
didn't became permanently afflicted by the "collecting bug", but
we did experience some small exciting "finds" and had a great
time getting to know and learning from all those we worked with.
It was with the same mixed emotions we experienced leaving
Florida that we "winterized" the outhouse, covered the wood pile
and locked the door to the cabin for the last time in October,
but winter was looming and (thanks again to The Caretaker
Gazette!) a new caretaking position awaited us. As we eased our
loaded truck down the pot-holed road one last time and headed
back into the "real" world, our journals were bursting, our hard
drives full of pictures, and our collection of experience much,
much richer.

MEXICO

SEEKING A LONG-TERM FARMER OR HOMESTEADER: (preferably a couple

coast of Mexico, a five minute walk from one of the most
spectacular, unspoiled beaches on the planet! The community
consists of a welcoming, rural, Mexican village in addition to
workshop participants at our Sustainability Education Center. We
also have frequent travelers passing through the area as we are
located two hours from a major international airport and thriving
tourist destination. We are offering a long-term lease of several
acres of land suitable for farming, permaculture, animal
husbandry, or environmentally friendly business in exchange for
summer caretaking while we are away, and possibly shorter stints
during the winter months. You may have the ability to take over
completion of a half-finished house in addition to an equity
stake in the property after a one year trial period. Candidate(s)
should speak some Spanish, should be comfortable in nature, and
must have a proven track record of farming, permaculture, or
involvement with a CSA at a managerial level, or other related
background. References are required. Apply at

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. We are a small rural farm on the Yucatan
peninsula. We are aiming at being as close to self-sufficient for
food, water and energy as possible but this will obviously take
some time. We will use organic techniques for growing our own
supplies along with permaculture design principles for layout. We
will be minimizing consumption of power and water to create a
more harmonious environment, which we believe will be also
friendlier as a result. We also aim to help the local community
by providing direct employment and sharing ideas and potentially
helping with local businesses too. We started from scratch in
November 2011 so you would still have a large input. We already
have many very happy volunteers and as we expand, build more
cabanas, clear abandoned farm land for growing and reforestation
we will need more help. We are looking for volunteers to commit
to 35 hours per week, in return for all accommodation, leaving
you time to explore around the Yucatan peninsula. This is because
it takes time to collect you from Valladolid, show you some
basics, introduce to the farm and some project ideas and for you
to settle in before you are of any real benefit, so we are
looking for a commitment of at least four weeks. Otherwise it
could well be general unskilled labor like weeding and clearing
paths and growing areas. We are looking for everything, from
builders (wooden and stone and cement construction) and
electricians, web designers, laborers and all general farm type
(unmechanised) help. We are not looking to make a profit, or sell
any products we grow or make. We may be interested in trading
locally for skills, labor or other things we need, in a manner
which benefits all. This would be an excellent opportunity to
learn great skills, in a great location, with great weather and
are interested in people who can contribute with enthusiasm,
skills and ideas. We are located two hours bus ride from Cancun
and Merida, about an hour's drive from the Caribbean in Tulum. We

INTERESTED IN SELF-SUFFICIENCY? Want to help build a community?
Love the sea? On an organic farm a few hours north of Oslo, our
collective is for anyone keen to learn, share ideas, and work
hard. We are building a sailboat and when she is finished we want
to sail the world, visiting other eco-villages, collecting
knowledge and traveling in the most eco-friendly way possible.

also work on the farm, building up the infrastructure to create a
stable base for our community. We live with our dog, the farm cat
and some (very) free-range chickens. We keep bees and make jam.
We are also working hard on the boat to finish up and go south
this year. The plating is finished, which was more or less a two
to three months' work. Next one is installing all the electric
stuff and continue getting the engine in. Getting the rigging in
also a high priority now. Our plan is to set sail for West
Indies/Cuba at the end of this year helping organic communities
around the world. So if you have skills in organic farming and
love to travel with zero carbon footprints, please contact us. We

THAILAND

WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER(S) (couples and groups
also welcome) to work at our dog centre in Bang Saphan, Thailand
for one year (we will still accept people for shorter stays of
course). We are a small dog rescue centre which cares for 50 plus
dogs at our centre and around fifty more at a local temple. We
aim to have these dogs adopted within months of their arrival
unless they have medical problems, in which case we would keep
them at the centre and care for them. We also neuter and treat
local street dogs. You would be given your own accommodation
(this is only available if you can commit for more than six
months) for a year in exchange for helping us in our effort to
have all of our dogs adopted within the year and eventually close
the centre. Your day-to-day work will include helping with
adoptions (spreading awareness), treating and caring for the dogs
(feeding, cleaning, etc.), helping with rescues and fundraising.
Headrock Dogs Rescue will still exist once the centre dogs have
been adopted but we will only treat and care for the dogs at the
temple and on the street beyond this point. Bang Saphan is a well
hidden secret and we want to keep it that way except for
volunteers who appreciate the natural beauty of Thailand and a
peaceful harmonious place to stay that makes you think of
paradise. If you would like to come and volunteer with us we will
help you organize your trip. We can arrange transportation to the
area, advise you on flights, supply information about where to
eat and what is good for trips, etc. We don't charge you for
coming to volunteer; we just appreciate your help. Please read
the thoughts of past volunteers at "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note:

UTAH

HELP NEEDED in Moab. I'm a 53-year-old female living in a lovely
small straw bale home with a large organic garden at the end of a
quiet cul de sac. I have a variety of gardening/landscaping/home
maintenance projects I'd love to have help in exchange for meals
and accommodations. In late June - late September there is
ongoing weeding; harvesting from the garden; help with canning
and freezing produce. In September and October, I need help with
landscaping the front yard, including some planting, laying down
a weed barrier and drip irrigation. Then in October and early
November, I need help with garden cleanup, and winterizing. I
love sharing my lovely home this way, and appreciate the help
more than I can say. I love hanging out with my guests, as my
schedule allows, and talking about life, sharing meals, coffee,
playing chess - whatever. Also, I am more than happy to show you
some of my favorite hikes. Love hearing different philosophies
and ideas, and stories about my guests' travels. Someday I'll be
traveling again, but for now I'm content to host. You can visit
my website "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact information for
these ads is available only to Gazette subscribers." to get a
sense of who I am and what's important to me. I'm a passionate
cook with strong vegetarian leanings and am happy to provide
accommodations and meals in exchange for two to four hours work
per day, depending on what needs to be done. I can accommodate
single persons or couples. A few rules: no pets please. No
smoking or drugs. Accommodations are a semi-private screened area
with a twin bed, in the main living area, for a single person.
Couples have a private room with double bed. Shared bath in
either case. My house is small, but cozy and comfortable. The
patio and garden are lovely places to hang out. I can offer very
limited internet access in my home - there are numerous places in
town to access it though. Moab is a town of around 10,000, a
community of lots of creative, intelligent, and compassionate
folks. The scenery is spectacular, with red-rock cliffs and
canyons everywhere. There are endless things to do here - hiking,
climbing, biking, rafting, jeeping, etc. My house is five minutes
from town and 15 minutes from Arches National Park. And my
home/garden/patio is a lovely oasis for hanging out, if that's
your preference. Come visit - I'm sure we'll have fun! Please
email "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact information for these
ads is available only to Gazette subscribers."

cabin plus some meals. You'll be responsible for handy-man/woman
duties around my 14 acre off-grid house and property in Vermont.
Ideally, you can mow, split wood, do some carpentry, keep up with
routine maintenance on energy systems, handle a little
house-cleaning, and be home when I can't be, to greet Airbnb
visitors. I like living remotely, quietly, and eat vegetarian,
and you do too. Perhaps you are a writer or musician. You'll get
a lot of work done out here. Please email "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

VIETNAM

WE NEED AN ENGLISH TEACHER for the duration of one to six months.
This is a nonprofit that provides training and job placement for
unemployed and rural women in the nearby villages. We make
beautiful souvenirs and all profits go back to help more people
in need. Our craft school in Vinh Long Province, Southern
Vietnam, is also a place to host local and foreign tourists and
visitors who want to learn more about craft making and the
Vietnamese culture. The school is surrounded by a relaxing
garden, lotus ponds and native plants, with the Mekong River
going by the front yard. It is a great place for the guests to
chill out and learn about life in the Mekong Delta. Since the
team in our craft school, including the artisans who are rural
disadvantaged women, barely speak English, we are looking for
someone to be based here to teach the team English and how to
welcome the tourists. Or if the person knows bag and art design,
they can teach the artisans new designs. Since we are a
nonprofit, where all the profits we earn go back to support more
people in need, we are not able to provide for housing/food
stipend. Yet we are happy to help the volunteers to find housing.
