LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Gary, I am newly retired and new to The Caretaker Gazette. I
wanted to know if you had some “best practices” to share with
me as I’m new to all of this. I’d like to get started
caretaking and housesitting soon, maybe get ready to take my
first position this winter. I’d love to hear some advice from
you. Thank you! Sincerely, Margaret P., Houston, TX

Hi Margaret, congratulations on your retirement and thank you
for your subscription! As far as advice, I always recommend
keeping it simple when responding to property owners. You should
have these three things prepared before contacting any property
owners: 1) Have a good, one-page resume or introductory cover
letter ready to be mailed, or emailed directly to the property
owner. In it you should highlight your experiences and strengths
that you would bring to a caretaking or housesitting position. 2)
Have at least three to four good, checkable references with a
brief overview of how you know the reference and include their
current phone number or email address for the property owner to
contact. 3) After you have your resume and references organized,
be available for a phone interview (especially in the case of
property owners who need to fill a position quickly and would
like to speak with you). Best of luck and thanks again. You’re
always welcome to email or call us with your specific
questions.

Hi Gary, I get numerous new positions emailed directly to my
email address every week from The Caretaker Gazette, but there
are usually just three or four new positions in each of the
emails you send to me. I have an online subscription. Shouldn’t
I be getting your Gazette issues emailed to me with more
positions? Please let me know about this. Thanks. Henry W.,
Salem, OR

Hi Henry, thanks for writing. When you entered your online
subscription order at www.caretaker.org a thank you message would
have appeared on your screen with instructions for accessing your
issues. For online subscribers like yourself Henry, we are unable
to email issues because too many Internet Service Providers block
our large email messages. Online subscribers can log into our
website at www.caretaker.org anytime using their email address
and password to get their 16 page issue. Each 16 page issue has
positions that are not in the email updates – so it is
important for online subscribers to log in to get each issue. If
any online subscriber needs help logging into their account, they
can email us anytime at caretaker@caretaker.org and we will be
glad to email back very easy log in instructions. Henry, I have
just emailed your log in directions to you - please save these
directions so you can refer to these directions anytime you want
to log in to www.caretaker.org. If you have any questions, please
feel free to email us. All subscribers, both online and print,
who have provided us with an email address, receive our email
updates each week containing new listings. We have many postal
subscribers who don’t use computers, who have given us an email
address from a co-worker, friend, or one of their children so we
can email updates to them, even if they don't use computers
themselves.

I would like to thank you all at the Gazette. I have procured a
caretaker’s position through your pages and in doing so will be
fulfilling a long time dream of mine, relocating out west. I
cannot tell you what this opportunity means to me but would like
to offer my sincerest thanks for providing a forum to discover
these opportunities. Thank you, Peter C. East Lyme CT

Peter, congratulations on getting your first caretaker
position. I wish you the best on your journey out west! Please
update us with your new address once you settle in there.

PROPERTY CARETAKER PROFILE

From Five Months To Five Years At A Writer’s Paradise On The
Oregon Coast
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Interests: Lighthouses, marine fauna and flora, bird-watching,
hiking, writing, emancipatory media
Quote: “I do not want to spin silly tales for money; I want to
write about revelations.” - Jack Kerouac

Catherine and Lucy on the deck at the lakeside property

“Must love dogs” stated The Caretaker Gazette ad seeking a
property caretaker and pet-sitter for a few months on the Oregon
Coast. It was 2012 and time to turn a new leaf as I approached
60. Too young for Social Security and too old for most jobs, I
turned to the Gazette for liberation from the proverbial rat race
and constant rent hikes. After 34 years of award-winning
journalism, I found myself laid off like thousands of other
reporters as newspapers folded across the country. For years I
had written police blotters and wire service headlines but
yearned to trade the high-speed chases of body-bag journalism for
content that really matters.
Working as a remote freelance book editor for large publishers
kept me afloat, but I wanted to write one of my own. It was time
to stop spinning my wheels on the financial treadmill. The
Gazette ad’s promise of a summer on the beach with a dog
sounded perfect. As long as I had a laptop and an internet
signal, I was in business. Freedom from high rents: In the
documentary film “Random Lunacy,” globe-trotting free spirit
Poppa Neutrino, says, “Rent is the thing that beats us. It
kills our dreams, passions and creativity.” Mortgages,
maintenance and utilities keep us shackled to the yoke like wage
slaves for most of our lives, he explains, robbing us of our
freedom. We become slaves to the house and utility companies.
The Caretaker Gazette offered a key to open the door to freedom.
Caretaking meant I could work from anywhere. It offered the
perfect lifestyle for a freelancer and the Gazette provided the
perfect platform for finding the right position. I sent a resume
with some references and poured my love of dogs onto the page.
The owners responded within a few days, inviting me to Florence,
Oregon for an interview, to look at the “cottage studio”…
and to meet Lucy, their 11-year-old yellow lab I would care for
while they sailed on their 90-foot boat. Lucy’s landlubbing
preferences were about to open up a writer’s paradise with
affordable solitude and the dream of a literary life by the sea.

Lakeside living: As soon as I arrived at the property, I knew I
was home. Nature would provide breakfast every morning while I
walked the dog. A large 100-pound bundle of golden fur bounded
out to greet me and we became instant friends. The owners
interviewed me over a delicious lunch of fresh seafood they had
just caught the day before after taking their new boat out to
stretch her sea legs. Nestled beside their beautiful home on
Siltcoos, the largest lake in Oregon, sat a lovely 2-story,
2-bedroom, 2-bath house with cathedral ceilings, exquisite
furnishings, bamboo floors and seven giant windows overlooking
the lake. Imagine my delight upon learning this was the
caretaker’s “cottage.”
In between bites of fresh crab and salmon, the owners explained
the caretaker’s duties: turn the garden sprinklers on and off,
check the mail, put out the trash and take Lucy for walks. In
exchange, I would receive free rent, utilities and Wi-Fi on
Oregon’s most spectacular scenic coastline. I had no idea of
the next step when the position ended, but caretaking would
enable me to save for my next place. That night I watched the
moonlight glistening on the lake while a chorus of frogs sang
their hearts out. Lucy came and found me and put her wet nose in
my palm. I asked her to work some magic. The next morning the
owners informed me they had verified my references and the
background check. While they had considered other qualified
candidates, they decided to let the dog choose her companion.
Apparently, Lucy had chosen me.
Paradise found: And so I took up residence on this beautiful
property with a beautiful dog who would become my writing Muse. I
placed a desk at the largest window and watched eagles fly by as
my book took wing at last. With the beach just a mile away, Lucy
and I spent five happy months beachcombing, swimming, playing
fetch, hiking and rosy brilliant sunsets. We visited Heceta
Lighthouse, perched on a spectacular cliff high above the
crashing waves, and explored dozens of hidden coves and trails. I
had escaped the city with its cacophony, searing temps, hot
asphalt sidewalks and overpriced housing, and found a writer’s
paradise with cool sea breezes instead.
The caretaker’s “cottage” was larger than any place I had
ever inhabited. Tastefully appointed with every amenity including
a laundry, utilities and high-speed Wi-Fi, such a home would
normally rent for $2,500 or more in that area. Free from the
pressure of constant freelance gigs just to meet the rent, I was
suddenly able to pursue my creative dreams
Best friends: Lucy and I became inseparable buddies. Every day
we went on some adventure while I also checked the watering
system and the mail and kept an eye on the property. A caretaker
makes all the difference in deterring burglars as well as the
bears and other critters while folks are traveling.

Catherine and Lucy’s ocean view

The Heceta Lighthouse

From my windows I saw herons, eagles and wild geese and listened
to the most melodious birdsong. At night the frogs croaked under
a blanket of stars. I watched whales, waves, sea lions and
seagulls at the nearby beaches, all an inspiration for my
creative writing. Finally, I began writing the book I had waited
years to pen … my adventures as an investigative reporter. The
first pages of “Forgive Us Our Press Passes” were written
that year overlooking Siltcoos Lake with a lab snoozing at my
feet as my Muse.
An extended stay: Upon their return, the property owners
graciously informed me I could stay at the cottage until I
decided on my next destination. I was tracking The Caretaker
Gazette listings and even posted and ad of my own but had not yet
found the right position. I had fallen in love with the Oregon
Coast, the charming little town of Florence… and Lucy had found
her way into my heart.
Then the winds of change brought a miracle. I returned from a
beach walk one day to find a note inviting me to dinner at the
main house. That evening the owners shared that they had decided
to continue sailing south for the winter and become floating
snowbirds. They appreciated how well I took care of the property
and how happy Lucy was with her “nanny.” Working at home on a
laptop as an editor and writer provided constant companionship
for their beloved Lucy while they pursued their retirement travel
dreams. This provided the peace of mind they needed for extensive
sailing. Would I consider full-time caretaking so they could
continue their adventures?
Five months to five years: That simple little Gazette ad for a
few months in 2012 turned into a long-term position that lasted
five happy years. The cottage became my permanent writing
sanctuary and Lucy remained my full-time companion as I wrote and
edited books for many happy, productive hours. The owners dropped
anchor from time to time and their port time became my vacation
time to visit family or take some trips of my own, including a
six-week adventure in Peru.
The freedom from oppressive rent and utilities opened up my life
to pursue my literary dreams. I began hosting workshops and
literary salons at the local arts center where I became the
creative writing instructor, a pursuit I still maintain now, nine
years later. I also became a freelance columnist at the local
newspaper and a regional daily, receiving a First Place National
Press Award, and continued editing books for publishers and
authors around the globe. A literary agent accepted my manuscript
and is pitching it to major publishers. For five wonderful years
I enjoyed a great quality of life on a beautiful five acre
property with wonderful people and a delightful dog. I thrived
and wrote and saved money, expanding my work and horizons.
Flywheel to freedom: That caretaking position carried me from
ages 60 to 65 until I qualified for Social Security. While those
benefits provide a flywheel for my income as a freelance book
editor, property caretaking offsets life’s biggest expenditure:
housing. Lucy turned sixteen in 2017 and we shared one last
glorious summer of beachcombing and berry-picking. When her
owners returned from their summer travels, the vet confirmed
Lucy’s days were numbered. The time had come to move on and
close the book on this unforgettable chapter. I found a place to
live nearby and told Lucy I would visit her often. She passed
away peacefully three weeks later.
The owners didn’t place her ashes in the garden by the main
house but right beside the door of my caretaker cottage.
Astonished, I asked why. They replied, “Because that’s where
she always sat waiting for you and that’s where she would want
to remain.” I placed a little statue there in loving memory of
my beach buddy and writing Muse.
Continuing the dream: I’m still friends with the owners, still
hosting literary events, and still a free spirit now at age 68,
so I still look to The Caretaker Gazette for my next adventure. I
became a subscriber two decades ago and appreciate Gary Dunn’s
consistency in providing this marvelous platform for matching
property owners with responsible caretakers. You are never too
old or too young to become a caretaker. For many like myself, it
offers a springboard for propelling your dreams. The Caretaker
Gazette offers so many fascinating opportunities and I am lured
by everything from French chateaus to Maine lighthouses and
Hawaiian plantations.
I’m considering Italy and want to explore more of South
America. Whether I land in Peru or Perugia, I know The Caretaker
Gazette will hold some memorable adventure like the one I
experienced in Oregon. Hopefully, the ad will say “must love
dogs.” I’m still editing books to earn a living. But gone is
the overwhelming pressure since I can pick and choose the books
and authors. No longer trampled by multiple deadlines to meet the
rent, I have the time to write. The income that housing and
utilities used to evaporate now goes into savings – investing
in my future instead of the landlord’s.
I like to paraphrase Virginia Woolf by saying that “a woman
needs a room of her own” – from The Caretaker Gazette! –
“if she is going to write…” For now, I’m living my dream,
thanks to Gary and the Gazette.

with the use of a fully furnished caretaker’s cottage that
overlooks our beautiful lake, a base salary (based on
experience/desired work schedule), and full benefits for a

be available to work some weekends as needed to help with

OHIO

HELP NEEDED. I have an Amish built cabin in Coshocton County, in
Fresno, OH. It is on 18.9 acres of land. The farm has about 20
chickens, 12 highlander cows, two emus, one goat, five sheep, two
pigs, an older horse (Deka) and a donkey (Billy Sue). The cabin
is 16'x30' with second floor bedroom with a 4'x6' deck
overlooking the valley. Heat will be via wood stove. The
caretaker cabin will have a small bathroom/shower, small kitchen,
and electric and internet access. It is free to live in exchange
for taking care of the place. We are looking for someone that
likes to live sustainably, help us with the farm, cut and trim
grass, take care of the animals and property. We always help when
we are there. There are plenty of places to work for additional
money but your living expenses are not a worry. On off hours,
there is an opportunity to explore the land and forage for wild
edible plants. Our goal is to build a permaculture farm and try
to be as sustainable, but also be practical. Eventually being off
the grid is another desire. Basically, make it so people would
like to visit, learn and maybe stay. We have two other cabins and
will be holding classes covering camping skills, etc. We do not
live there, but come on weekends. When we are there, we have bon
fires, picnics and other events. Not to mention, help with the
place. We work in Cleveland to make this all possible. There is
another cabin for us. We are trying to establish a permaculture
environment with fruit trees, gardens, startup grape vines and a
fishing pond. I can send pictures of the area and cabin. If you
are interested, please email us at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

AN ALTERNATIVE TO COSTLY MEDICAL INSURANCE
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both
property owners and caretakers/housesitters, have discussed their
healthcare situation and possible insurance options/alternatives
with us. My wife and I dropped our current medical insurance when
the premiums jumped to $2,000 per month with a $12,000 annual
deductible. We switched to a $354 per month healthcare program
for called Medi-Share.
I wanted to send you some information about Medi-Share as I
thought you might be interested in their affordable healthcare.
Like us, you and your family could join their community of
400,000+ who share in each other's medical burdens. Since 1993
more than $4 Billion in medical expenses have been shared and
discounted by Medi-Share members.

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and
interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005,
was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse
ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a
cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. In 2005, the
handwriting on the wall began and the books closed on this
historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then, became my
pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true happenings
during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the open range
while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into usable
cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later in the
other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among wild
cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin’ out in Arizona’s
beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although
unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever
dreamed of being a cowboy, here’s your chance to ride along
with me as your side-kick and saddle pard. You can view an
entertaining intro with many colored pictures at lastdkcowboy.com
or write lastdkslashcowboy@gmail.com
