CARETAKER OPPORTUNITIES

ALBANIA

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED next summer. We are a chilled out hostel on the
beautiful Albanian coastline. The property is in the center of
Himara, right on the beach with a rooftop terrace where you can
relax and enjoy the best sea views. We need friendly volunteers
to help with reception, cleaning rooms, making beds, preparing a
simple breakfast in the morning, organizing hostel dinners, and
socializing with guests. Also a bonus if you are artistic! We
love for people to leave their own mark on the hostel, so if you
can add to the artwork on the walls or you have ideas to improve
our decor, which would be great. Volunteers will get a bed in a
shared dorm, free breakfast, and occasionally other meals, access
to Wi-Fi, washing machine, tea and coffee. Food is cheap here in
Albania and there is a fresh fruit and vegetable market, and a
supermarket just around the corner from us. Hours of work may
vary depending on how many volunteers we have or how many guests
are in the hostel. But always we will make sure you have plenty
of time to relax and enjoy yourself! Himara has nice bars and
seafood restaurants for you to enjoy. If you're in Albania,
please call XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX and come join us!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hi Gary! Wow! What a wonderful response to my caretaker wanted
ad! I never expected to have so many very qualified people to
choose from. I have hired a wonderful retired woman who will move
here in time for winter. I can certainly use some help here so I
am glad my ad had such a great response (I'll have to tell my
neighbors about your publication). Thank you! Nancy P., Putney,
VT

Nancy, thanks for sharing the great news. It sounds like that,
as a result of your ad in the Gazette, you had some very good
people apply and have found someone who will work best for your
situation. And thanks for spreading the good word about the
Gazette to your neighbors. I appreciate it because most of our
business comes via word-of-mouth!

Thanks to the Gazette for running my Situations Wanted ad. I am
nearing the end of a three month caretaking assignment in Puerto
Rico. Now that I am ready to look for another position, I am
curious - how do I become one of your Caretaker Profiles? Steve
J., Tampa, FL

Steve, I am sure that our readers would be interested in
reading about your caretaking assignment in Puerto Rico. Any of
our readers who are currently involved in, or recently returned
from, a housesitting or caretaking assignment are welcome to
submit a profile of approximately 1,800 words along with four
photos. If selected, we will work with you to edit your profile
and publish it for free for you.

Wow, were you ever correct when you said I would get a response
to my cat/housesitter ad! I came home from a few days away to
find nearly two dozen emails in response - I haven't even gotten
my copy of The Caretaker Gazette yet so it came as a wonderful
surprise. And, honestly, how do you ever even choose? They all
(or most all) sound absolutely great and the kind of people you
would like to know and have in your home. Thank you and thanks
for providing such a terrific service. Nick M., Cedar Key, FL

Nick, more and more property owners, like you, tell us that
they have found their best housesitters by advertising in the
Gazette. Please keep us in mind the next time you need a
cat/housesitter for your place.

Hi Gary, just wanted to take a moment to thank you for your
prompt, courteous response to my email messages. As I deal with
more and more web based businesses it was a joy to have actual
real live people respond to my emails and that I didn't get
passed on to some mysterious supervisor that doesn't exist or
ever responds. And you simply took care of my situation. No
matter how efficient, how amazing a web business can be it
ultimately is about relationship, human-to-human and it seems you
all understand that. May your businesses continue to be
prosperous. Thanks again, Mark E., Estes Park, CO

Hi Mark, thanks for writing back. We do our best to respond to
all emails that come in to us within 24 hours. I'm glad we were
able to answer all your questions.

Time to renew my subscription to the Gazette. I'm afraid I'm
hooked. I am currently working as a resident caretaker on Orcas
Island, WA. Originally, I responded to an ad, which has run in
your newsletter before, for a caretaker at a farm here in
Washington State. What a breathtaking view and nice clean
quarters. It was a bit too lonely for me, however. After seven
weeks, I moved to the Orcas Hotel to a more public-oriented, more
demanding job which suits me better. My former partner and I also
went to Italy after responding to the position advertised in the
Gazette. The owners of the villa live in an incredible fourteenth
century monastery called "Cappucini" after the original owners
who were monks. We enjoyed their hospitality. Anyway, I wanted
you to see how your publication has been a part of my life for a
while. I will call with my credit card number tomorrow to renew
my Gazette subscription. Sincerely, Vicky H., Eastsound, WA

Vicky, we're always glad to read about another successful
Gazette subscriber. Please spread the good word about the

BULGARIA

ARE YOU INTERESTED in permaculture, and gardening in harmony with
nature? Do you have knowledge and experience, or do you want to
learn the practical skills? I've recently purchased a house near
the village of Kirilovo, located in southeastern Bulgaria. It has
a half acre of land which I will gradually turn into a
permaculture project. I'm in the blessed situation of having a
'blank canvas' to start with - a sunny plot with healthy, fertile
soil, a permaculturist's dream. I'm going to start planting an
orchard with plums, apricots, peaches, cherries, sour cherries,
pomegranates, apples, pears, quince, persimmon and walnuts,
surrounded by a nixed flowering/fruiting that will provide food,
attract bees, and shelter wild birds. Do you want to help me with
this? You don't need to have previous permaculture or gardening
experience (though if you have, great!) because I can train you.
However, you have to be willing to do physical work, e.g. turn
the compost heap and dig planting trenches. Some of your work
will be in the house. There's a lot of cleaning and tidying to
do. If you have special skills, I'll be happy to allocate you
relevant tasks. For example, you may be able to build a grape
arbor, composting toilet, solar energy shower or rainwater
harvesting system, do small repairs around the house, paint
walls, restore old wooden furniture, teach me yoga and tai chi,
train the stray dog who adopted me, do some social media posting,
cook (mostly vegetarian) meals, give me physiotherapy or create a
mural from collected ceramics shards. If you're a couple, you can
divide the tasks between you, e.g. one does the gardening and the
other the housework. I'm a writer, and will often sit at my desk
to work on a book while you get on with your work in the kitchen
or the orchard. It's quiet and peaceful here. The main sounds
you'll hear are birdsong, the humming of bees, the clapclapclap
of storks' beaks, the moo of cows and the meeh of sheep,
interspersed with goat bells and dogs barking. The location is
rural and ecologically fairly clean. The village economy is based
on sunflower-growing, solar energy harvesting and fruit orchards.
If you like, I can introduce you to the people in the village,
who are really friendly and helpful, though few speak English.
Does this sound like you? If yes, tell me what interests you
about this placement and what skills you can contribute. Please
be honest about yours skills and everything else. I look forward
to hearing from you over the phone. Please call
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

GERMANY

HELP NEEDED. We have an 80 hectares farm with 50 cows, 30 cattle
and about 10 calves. We also have three cats, a dog, and some
chickens. We're not an organic farm yet but we will be soon and
are about to start the transition process. So, de facto, you will
see the same habits and have the same kind of work. Right now my
parents are still the owners of the farm and I, Andi, and my two
brothers are helping them as much as we can. I just finished my
studies in history and languages. I'm very interested in learning
and improving my languages. As to the farm work, you will have to
feed the animals and do some daily work in the barn. You can also
help us with the work in the fields. We're not going to exploit
you! You will have a lot of free-time. Sometimes we go out during
the week to have a beer in the city and of course also on
weekends. So you're not going to end up bored in your room. You
will get breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. The meals for
lunch will be mostly with meat but I don't eat a lot of meat so
if you're a vegetarian you won't starve. You will have to work
five days a week and between three to six hours a day, which will
depend on the season and the weather. Our farm is located in the
south of Germany in the state of Baden-Wurttemberg. We're very
close to Lake Constance, one of the biggest lakes in Europe.
We're also close to the borders of Austria, Switzerland,
Liechtenstein and France. We would be very happy to welcome you
on our farm, have a language exchange, teach you many diverse
things about farming and have a nice time together. If
interested, please call XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

IRELAND

FARM HELP needed. Our farm is situated close to a town called
Templemore, in County Tipperary, in the heart of the Golden Vale;
an area of rolling pastureland in the civil province of Munster,
in southern Ireland. Close to our farm lies the famous Devil's
Bit mountain. According to local legend, the mountain got its
name because the devil took a bite out of it, leaving a small gap
in the mountain between one outcrop of rock (known as the Rock)
and another small plateau. The bite the devil allegedly took made
this gap and the legend suggests that the devil broke his teeth
taking this bite and spat the Rock of Cashel to where it now
stands. We are also situated in close proximity to a range of
popular tourist attractions like Holycross Abbey, The Galtee
Mountains, Cahir Castle, Mitchelstown Calves and The Glen of
Aherlow, to name just a few. On the farm, we have many horses
which we exercise daily. We also host a number of suckler cows,
sheep and dogs on our farm. Daily duties include feeding the
horses, walk outs, cleaning stables, bedding with fresh straw,
paper and/or wood shavings as required and ensuring that the
horses are healthy. Feeding and caring for the livestock
including sheep and cows are other important tasks on the farm
especially during the winter months and in the lead up to calving
and lambing seasons in the spring. Once calved, our cows and
calves enjoy access to pasture, until the calves become big
enough to be weaned from their mothers in the late autumn months.
Great care is also required for the ewes and their new born
lambs, to ensure they are healthy and well fed during the harsh
winter months. Accommodation and access to a bathroom is
available for two guests. All meals will be included, if desired.
We are looking for someone to help out on the farm and also to
help with general household chores. On your time off, you can
avail yourself of the local tennis club, golf club, mountain
trails/trekking, horse riding or maybe just taking time to
explore the local scenery. Airport, bus or train pickup to
Shannon or Dublin may be arranged. Please call
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. We look forward to hearing from you!

Julie and David at Lucia Falls, Washington

It seemed to take hold of us from the beginning when we met in
2010. I was doing housesitting in Los Angeles at the time besides
my endeavors in the Entertainment Industry. I had housesat for
many people in the Hollywood business, including celebrities. We
had only known each other for two weeks after meeting, but I had
a yearly housesit I had done in Seattle for years. I kept hearing
this voice in my head - ask him to come with you. No, I thought,
I love that drive and some alone time after LA. The Voice
wouldn't stop. So, okay. I asked him did he want to drive up with
me, then he could fly back. He had never seen the Pacific
Northwest - which I had lived in on and off for 10 years and am
an extremely Big fan of it.
He said, Why not?! We started out the road trip up the stunning
Coast Highway 1 route and the 101 towards Seattle. We had a
terrific time (I love the Bill Murray story - take a trip with
someone if you think you are in love. If you can make it through
that without killing each other - come home and get married
immediately.) We arrived in Oregon then Washington and David was
bowled over with the beauty. We stayed for about a month.
He never took the plane ride back. I couldn't get him to leave...
LOL.
David had a huge Hollywood career working with Tom Hanks, Ron
Howard and many others. I started out since I was 12 in the
theatre and then went to New York City - one of my dreams for
many years. Turns out - David and I almost met each other there
20 years before. His friend lived on the same street I did.
Synchronicity.
And, here we are with a decade now of housesitting, of property
caretaking and in the last two years added Guest Innkeeping to
our resume. It seemed to evolve. It has a life of its own.
David and I ended up starting an online boutique marketing firm
that helps small businesses. We began to help the Big Foot Lodge
in Hood River, Oregon with marketing - until one day the owner
lost their part-time Guest Host. We felt like we could flip an
egg and she was wonderful to work with, giving us full rein of
the place while she was out of the country. We helped avert many
a crisis in bookings while there, got her up on Google which was
unclaimed heretofore, got her a great review system going on Yelp
and got her up to a 4 star rating across the internet. We kept
going back to help and found that we loved hosting, interacting
with people, and the adventure of running a Lodge in Oregon!
Suddenly, we found that many Innkeepers never get a break and
also thought - we would make great Temporary Guest Hosts while
people took a break from their business. We know things! We then
took a six month gig with a friend's country property while they
snow birded and put all our stuff in storage - and it just kept
on going!
At the time, I remembered The Caretaker Gazette! And thought -
Oh, Yeah?! I had subscribed a decade before when I was looking
for horse ranches in Montana to do research for a horse script I
was writing. Anyway, I contacted Gary, gave him my Visa card info
and signed up again with a new subscription.
We immediately talked to a fellow in France with a chateau who
was interested in us but the timing was off - we still plan on
going there some time, we are on his notify list. We interviewed
for a $70,000 job in the Pennsylvania countryside with horses. We
talked to a Montana entrepreneur about being caretakers while
they mostly weren't there. A Colorado property was very
interested in us too, but the locale wasn't really right for us.
Word to the wise: Make sure the terrain and weather and lifestyle
of the place you are choosing is something that really matches
what works for you! We even toyed with the idea of being private
executive cooks for a wealthy family, since we love great food
and had some experience - why not make $90,000 a year feeding
people fantastic meals?
And, voila, within about two weeks we had some seriously good
offers from our first issue of the Gazette. One such connection
came from a Pennsylvania property owner. He had converted a
historic old church and property into a fantastic event center,
and made the Rectory and Convent into a bed and breakfast
operation. He had a Help-Wanted ad in that issue looking for
Innkeepers, so we were intrigued and answered his ad.

Front of West Grove Chapel

The Dock, Little Glen Lake, M22 Inn

We booked a flight out to see him after reading his ad and
speaking to him. We got there and it turns out - the Rectory
wasn't really ready for innkeeping yet as it was still
unfurnished and being renovated. We said, Heck, why don't we help
you get your online presence going through on the Chapel?
We became Project Managers long distance for them, worked on his
website, got all his social media in place, got them a newspaper
article, worked the Facebook angle and bookings came flowing in.
After that, we helped him with vacation properties throughout
Pennsylvania, including beautiful eclectic Cottages (go for the
fall colors, folks!), built a website and rinsed and repeated
what we had done for the Chapel.
We just loved the owner and his family and being able to serve
them to get their dreams off the ground has been a treasured gig.
The Rectory just had its first booking and will now be ready for
an Innkeeper! We continue to talk to the stakeholders and work on
all the marketing. That was a big win for us, and great income
while we were looking for other gigs ~ to be able to use all our
knowledge and to help someone to get their dream.
The first idea was to be rent free and put in some great savings
while we did property caretaking. It has been that way for two
years now. We found another opportunity through the Gazette
listings and ran an Airbnb on the Oregon Coast for the next
winter. Then, the Universe ... (because everything is always
working out for us) presented us with a Gazette ad in Michigan,
after another Coastal job we just missed getting because of a
timing issue. I got a sudden email from another historic inn,
this one in Glen Arbor, Michigan after sending in our resumes.
Michigan, hmmm...??? Never would have thought of going there?
Turns out - we had no idea Michigan was so gorgeous! The water on
the little lake, literally looks almost like the Caribbean. Who
knew?!
After discussing some details, the response was: When can we
talk? We Facetimed an interview (which we always recommend!) and
got along famously with the General Manager. You want to always
make sure your energies match, and you ask pertinent questions
about the property. The Owner walked in during it and said, with
a smile, So, okay - when are you starting?
The historic Michigan Inn, now called the M22 Inn, was a vintage
property and a huge creative challenge from that standpoint but
we arrived excitedly to meet the General Manager and Owner who we
just got along so well with - and off we went. We felt like our
talents of organizing, passionately serving the guests,
beautifying wherever we could really made a difference. One
guest, who had been there for 30 years on and off when it was
newly purchased by our owner, was upset when she arrived in June.
She said that things weren't the way they were used to. She came
back in two months - and actually took me aside to tell me
Something is really different here, something has miraculously
changed! The energy is so different. The flowers on the tables
outside. Everything feels so clean. The lobby is now so cute with
the vintage furniture made into a cafe feel. All, things we
implemented.
Flowers, always flowers - even if just from the garden in each
room - make such a difference to people feeling taken care of
like you went the extra mile. We have learned a lot in the last
10 years to add to our caretaking skills. David folds a mean
fitted sheet now and we can peacock fold the towel rack which
looks so inviting. We left the historic Inn in Michigan a better
place and helped people make memories for a lifetime... how's
that for touching the world with your heart and talents?
People were always amazed. They thought this rent-free lifestyle
was amazing. Nearly every guest asked - How did you get to do
this job? Our answer - this little gem called The Caretaker
Gazette. Then, we share some of our story.
We will continue to coach people on how they can have this
lifestyle. And, we enthusiastically will also continue to support
Inns and B&Bs, and vacation rentals with our marketing consulting
to share how to get the most from their business in ways they
never heard of.
It's a pretty good life, right?
What do we love about it? It gives David and me a chance to
write this lifestyle. We can carve out time to write without a
heavy mortgage or rent, in fact, we are working on a TV Pilot
about all our innkeeping adventures. On property caretaking gigs
- even more time. It gives us time to read, and participate in
nature - and after many years working hard as entrepreneurs - it
is giving us finally extra money to make the next creative vision
happen.
Thanks, Gary and The Caretaker Gazette!!! We will continue to
recommend you.
We will build it (with your help, Gary) and the next gig will
come!

nature park reserve in the Tuscan countryside, on an old Roman
Road. The Villa's exterior is decorated with graffiti dating back
to 1500 and which are typical of Florentine Mannerist Art. Inside
the salons of the Villa frescoes by Andrea Boscolo (1592) and
Nicola Matraini (1750) can be admired. We are looking for a
responsible, reliable person who loves historical houses and is
willing to stay in the Villa, carry out some duties in exchange
for free lodging while on holiday in the area. The duties include
staying in the Villa every night from 8pm until 7am. Mornings and
afternoons are completely free and Monday is a full day free. We
want the caretaker to stay a minimum of two months and a maximum
of the tourist visa (three months). Accommodation will be a
single room at the top of a spiral staircase with a kitchenette
(small frig, sink, hot plate and toaster over) in the corner and
a private bathroom with shower. The room has satellite TV and
free Wi-Fi, but no meals are provided. A washing machine is
available for use in the Villa. Duties will include some of the
following: gardening, building, helping with tourists, and art
projects and include light gardening in the early morning or late
evening for a maximum of two hours, check of doors/gate closing

7am. So basically the caretaker will clean the garden around the
villa, help guests if they need suggestions for where to
eat/visit or to call for a taxi, verify that the doors and gates
are closed before going to bed, and generally keeping an eye on
the place, especially at night. There are also many events at the
Villa, such as weddings, concerts, gala dinners, etc. and the
caretaker helps direct the guests to the designated parking
areas. The main requirement is to sleep inside the Villa for the
overall security of the guests. Your bedroom is upstairs so you
have a good view of the main Villa entrance. The property is
occupied by the working staff and gardeners from 7am until 8pm,
so those hours are totally free for the caretaker. This is a
volunteer/exchange position and no money compensation and no
meals provided, for one person only. This could be a holiday

Hello, I'm Michael, I'm actively seeking a position as a Property
Overseer/Caretaker and or "light" House Manager with the
potential to evolve into an expanded role. The position would
consist chiefly of being an on-site presence providing
unparalleled service, i.e. watchful/eagle eye on your high end
property/grounds; offering exceptional/sterling and superlative
care; safeguarding your coveted/prized property. The core
internal duties would be general maintenance/up keep, and
cleaning to deep cleaning. Externally, it would potentially
include light landscaping, snow removal; to be determined.
Technically, it falls under the guise of House Sitting/Pet
Sitting, Animal care and the whole nine yards. Optimally, it
would be year round but am open to a seasonal position. A
skeletal overview of my aggregate experience includes being the
Primary Caretaker for our long held Great Grandfather's mini
estate pristinely maintained and presided over (
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ) for five years, give or take; to a House
Manager for a resort for a French couple in the High Desert of
California. Equally, it warrants mentioning I've worked in a
variety of disparate domestic related capacities rounding out the
overview. I possess a certain jen ne sais quoi replete with
dynamism, worldliness, erudition, sense of elan/grace and
unequaled professionalism. Moreover, for your personal assurance
I'm decidedly a non-smoker/non-drinker; the embodiment of;
epitomizing "straight laced"/straight arrow with a conservative
sensibility. Open to all geographical locations;
nationally/internationally. As a compensation package I'm seeking
a minimal/negotiable salary with Live-In/Live-On premises either
in main house or Guest House. I can be reached at

AN ALTERNATIVE TO COSTLY MEDICAL INSURANCE
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both
property owners and caretakers/housesitters, have discussed their
healthcare situation and possible insurance options/alternatives
with us. We have dropped our current medical insurance when the
premiums jumped to $2,000 per month with a $12,000 annual
deductible. We switched to $354/month healthcare program for my
wife and I called Medi-Share.
I wanted to send you some information about Medi-Share as I
thought you might be interested in their affordable healthcare.
Like us, you and your family could join their community of
400,000+ who share in each other's medical burdens. Since 1993
more than $4 Billion in medical expenses have been shared and
discounted by Medi-Share members.
With Medi-Share you and your family won't need to worry about
the mandate to purchase health insurance or pay costly penalties
and fees, members are exempt through a special provision in the
Affordable Care Act.

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and
interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005,
was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse
ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a
cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. During the start
of the year 2005, the handwriting on the wall began and the books
closed on this historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then,
became my pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true
happenings during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the
open range while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into
usable cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later
in the other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among
wild cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin out in Arizona's
beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although
unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever
dreamed of being a cowboy, here's your chance to ride along with
me as your side-kick and saddle pard. You can view an
entertaining introduction with many colored pictures at
lastdkcowboy.com or you can write to me at
lastdkslashcowboy@gmail.com
