Letters to the Editor
Hi Gary, we found our last caretakers as the result of an ad we
placed on your website six years ago. I hope our new help wanted
ad in the Gazette is as successful this time and that the
respondents are as qualified. Appreciatively, Mike M., Redding,
CA
Hi Mike, thanks for your kind words and for, once again,
submitting your help wanted ad for caretakers with us. We've
grown tremendously in the past six years, with many new
well-qualified subscribers. I'm sure your new ad will be as
successful as the last and you'll find qualified people for your
position.
Hi Gary, my husband and I are slowly traveling our way across the
U.S. thanks to some positions we've found in your Gazette. We're
getting ready to take a great leap and find a position outside
the U.S. We'd love to have our profile in the Gazette as a means
to showcase our experiences to property owners. What's the best
way to do this? Thank you to you and your staff for all you do.
Laura and Jim W. Des Moines, IA
Hi Laura and Jim, I appreciate your message. We always enjoy
hearing from our subscribers. It's great that you and your
husband have been able to use the Gazette to travel throughout

highlight your experiences to prospective employers and to help
other subscribers who are contemplating a caretaker lifestyle.
Please read Page 8 of each issue for our profiles. For your

Dear Gary, I am newly retired and new to The Caretaker Gazette. I
wanted to know if you had some "best practices" to share with me
as I'm new to all of this. I'd like to get started caretaking and
housesitting soon, maybe get ready to take my first position in
the spring. I'd love to hear some advice from you. Thank you!
Sincerely, Margaret P., Houston, TX
Hi Margaret, congratulations on your retirement and thank you for
your subscription! As far as advice, I always recommend keeping
it simple when responding to property owners. You should have
these three things prepared before contacting any property
owners: 1) Have a good, one-page resume or introductory cover
letter ready to be mailed, faxed, or emailed directly to the
property owner. In it you should highlight your experiences and
strengths that you would bring to a caretaking or housesitting
position. 2) Have at least three to four good, checkable
references with a brief overview of how you know the reference
and include their current phone number for the property owner to
call. 3) After you have your resume and references organized, be
available for a phone interview (especially in the case of
property owners who need to fill a position quickly and would
like to speak with you). Best of luck and thanks again. You're
always welcome to email or call us with your specific questions.

AUSTRIA
WE ARE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE to help run and entertain our guests at
a Ski Lodge, a sometimes lively but always friendly Alpine
backpackers lodge. We are located in the Austrian Alps amongst
some very picturesque scenery. We are about 45 minutes from
Innsbruck and 90 minutes from Munich. In return for board and
accommodation, helpers will be involved with turning over and
cleaning rooms as well as bar work and helping out with BBQ's,
when required in the evening. This will be through October
initially but also with the possibility of staying on for the
winter ski season where the slopes are a two minute walk from our
front door as well as all the expected Après that is
synonymous with skiing in Austria! In summer, guests like to go
hiking, paragliding, swimming, mountain biking as well as skiing
and snowboarding on the Glacier. There will be ample opportunity
do this and this would also particularly suit a skier or
snowboarder who may be required, if they so wish, to take guests
to the glacier and enjoy the snow with them for the day. The
Wildschönau Valley, where we are located has much to offer
including all its adventure activities. A work day is typically
three to four hours long and we do our upmost to ensure those
with us are well looked after and happy as we firmly believe this
adds to the atmosphere or our Lodge. Banter is always encouraged
for a lively atmosphere particularly in the bar during the
evening. To this end we certainly encourage helpers to mingle
with guests. They are backpackers from all over the world and
most likely will have much in common with yourselves and travel
stories to share. We like to think of ourselves as very fun,
approachable and friendly and it is important that you buy into
this. We look forward to welcoming you! Please call

CARETAKER PROFILE
Mike and Mary: Ordinary people living this extraordinary life
Dates of Birth: Mike 7/4/59 Mary 6/6/48
Interests: hiking, kayaking, country living, reading, crafts,
meeting new people and learning new skills
Quote: "Security is an illusion. Life is either a daring
adventure or nothing at all." Helen Keller
Mike and Mary
Until five years ago, Mike and Mary didn't even know the
caretaking lifestyle existed. Mary was happily teaching at a
small, non-profit school and Mike drove a school bus and did
handyman work on the side. They had completely renovated their
home and were comfortable and happy when fortune came knocking on
their door in the form of an article in a magazine.
Mary has said how she is always amazed, when looking back on her
life, the way things can be going along a planned route when an
innocuous comment, or in this case, an article in a magazine, can
change that course and open one's eyes to the possibilities which
surround us. "We were happy in our jobs, but both wanted be able
to travel more and have new challenges in our lives. This article
really spoke to us."
The article was about people who did caretaking for a living. It
mentioned The Caretaker Gazette as a resource for connecting
property owners with responsible, reliable people. Two months
after subscribing to the Gazette, Mary asked Mike what he thought
about doing this full-time - and he replied with seven words that
changed their lives. "If the house sells, let's do it." The house
sold!
Some people take the route of keeping their home and doing
housesitting or caring for property on a part time basis. Mike
and Mary made the decision to drastically downsize and simplify
their lives. They not only sold their home, but they also got rid
of most of their possessions. Except for their dog, Maisy, and
some basics, they were footloose and ready to go. "I know this
lifestyle isn't for everyone, but for us it is perfect," says
Mary. "We don't need an RV because the properties we take care
of supply housing. We don't mind roughing it, so a simple cabin
does us just fine, in fact, we prefer our simple homes to the big
one we used to have."
On their first caretaking assignment in Indiana, they learned to
care for horses, beefalo, sheep and assorted barnyard animals on
a 175 acre property which ran a summer camp in June and July.
They also planned, planted and cared for a large organic garden
on the property. Mary has always been interested in gardening,
and from the time spent in Indiana, she gained a whole new
perspective on the value of the organic way of gardening. "The
time we spent in Indiana was very special to us. We really felt
part of the community and we learned so many useful skills which
we continue to put to good use." In the end though, new
experiences called, ones in colder climates.
Mary explains, "One of the great things about caretaking is that
there are so many choices for the locations, responsibilities,
and kinds of jobs available. This is no 'one size fits all' kind
of life. One thing we have noticed is, that wherever we go,
people ask us about our lifestyle and how the process works. We
always tell them to go to www.caretaker.org to get an idea of how
The Caretaker Gazette is set up, and to take out a subscription
if they want to go further. Mike and I have also found the emails
of current openings to be very helpful. In addition to the
emails, we have had success when placing our own ads. The
important thing to remember when placing an ad is to be very
clear on what you are looking for. If location is important, be
sure to specify where you want to work (i.e. we prefer colder
climates.) Also, mention if you require housing, compensation, or
are just looking to housesit. You can discuss the details when
you talk on the phone or by email, but you will save time, both
for you and the property owner, by being clear on matters which
are important to you. Be sure to list skills you have, and always
get a letter of recommendation when the caretaking job is
finished."
From Indiana, Mike and Mary spent two summers managing a small,
rustic cabin resort located on the edge of a wilderness area in
the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. While there, they were
introduced to kayaking and even had time to do volunteer work in
the community as well as many projects around the resort. "Except
for the mosquitoes, this was about as close to paradise as you
could get," joked Mike. Their responsibilities left plenty of
time for hiking and kayaking in the Sylvania Wilderness.
Currently, Mike and Mary are working at a summer family camp in
Vermont. Along with hiking, kayaking, sailing and archery, there
have been many trips exploring New Hampshire and Vermont on their
days off. Camp closes down in mid-October and then it's off to
West Virginia to take care of a property for the winter while the
owner is away. "Winter will be a nice, relaxing change from the
camp activities this summer and we will be close to family and
friends once again."
And next summer, well that's a whole new adventure, isn't it? "We
are truly blessed to be on this journey of discovery together
where we keep meeting such interesting people and traveling to
new and exciting places. Our only regret is that we didn't do
this years ago, and even that's a small regret because our lives
are so full right now. Our goal is always, no matter the
placement, to make a difference, wherever we are."

tourist destination. We are offering a long-term lease of several
acres of land suitable for farming, permaculture, animal
husbandry, or environmentally friendly business in exchange for
summer caretaking while we are away, and possibly shorter stints
during the winter months. You may have the ability to take over
completion of a half-finished house in addition to an equity
stake in the property after a one year trial period. Candidate(s)
should speak some Spanish, should be comfortable in nature, and
must have a proven track record of farming, permaculture, or
involvement with a CSA at a managerial level, or other related
background. References are required. You can apply at our

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. We are a small rural farm on the Yucatan
peninsula. We are aiming at being as close to self-sufficient for
food, water and energy as possible but this will obviously take
some time. We will use organic techniques for growing our own
supplies along with permaculture design principles for layout. We
will be minimizing consumption of power and water to create a
more harmonious environment, which we believe will be also
friendlier as a result. We also aim to help the local community
by providing direct employment and sharing ideas and potentially
helping with local businesses too. We started from scratch in
November 2011 so you would still have a large input. We already
have many very happy volunteers and as we expand, build more
cabanas, clear abandoned farm land for growing and reforestation
we will need more help. We are looking for volunteers to commit
to 35 hours per week, in return for all accommodation, leaving
you time to explore around the Yucatan peninsula. This is because
it takes time to collect you from Valladolid, show you some
basics, introduce you to the farm and some project ideas and for
you to settle in before you are of any real benefit, so we are
looking for a commitment of at least four weeks. Otherwise it
could well be general unskilled labor like weeding and clearing
paths and growing areas. We are looking for everything, from
builders (wooden and stone and cement construction) and
electricians, web designers, laborers and all general farm type
(unmechanised) help. We are not looking to make a profit, or sell
any products we grow or make. We may be interested in trading
locally for skills, labor or other things we need, in a manner
which benefits all. This would be an excellent opportunity to
learn great skills, in a great location, with great weather and
we are interested in people who can contribute with enthusiasm,
skills and ideas. We are located two hours bus ride from Cancun
and Merida, about an hour's drive from the Caribbean in Tulum. We
have 24 acres of forest/jungle and an enormous cenote (sink hole
with water) which we use for swimming and necessary water supply.
We have secure and covered accommodation (thatched cabanas),
composting toilet facilities, and showering facilities (unheated
and unplumbed). Cabanas are shared and mixed depending on the
volunteers. To apply, please visit "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note:

NORWAY
INTERESTED IN SELF-SUFFICIENCY? Want to help build a community?
Love the sea? On an organic farm a few hours north of Oslo, our
collective is for anyone keen to learn, share ideas, and work
hard. We are building a sailboat and when she is finished we want
to sail the world, visiting other eco-villages, collecting
knowledge and traveling in the most eco-friendly way possible.
Anyone who helps us out will have the chance to join our crew. We
also work on the farm, building up the infrastructure to create a
stable base for our community. On the boat side the biggest thing
is that all the inner plating and insulation are all finished up,
the bathroom (wet-room) is plated and all water tanks are welded
into position. Next big thing is to get the engine into the boat.
We have to lift it up three meters and then two meters sideways.
It's a little messy but we are working on this right now. Weight
of the engine is around 500 kg so we need a hoist-system. The
volunteers took some days off to hitch-hike to the west coast,
and came happily back home with pictures of fiords, and camping
outside in the mountains close to the glaciers. The summer has
been extremely warm one so contrary to what I was thinking that
they will almost freeze to death they got back to the farm
sun-burned with a happy smile on their faces. During the next few
weeks we will be harvesting what we have been planting this year
and we will work on the engine and rigging, so if you have any
skills you might think will be useful please feel free to contact
us. We also looking for crew for sailing across the Atlantic,
heading towards Cuba when the boat is finished so if you find
that fancy please contact us. Please send an email to
"XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact information for these ads is
available only to Gazette subscribers." explaining why you would
be interested in our community and please place this in Capital

THAILAND
WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER(S) (couples and groups
also welcome) to work at our dog center in Bang Saphan, Thailand
for one year (we will still accept people for shorter stays of
course). We are a small dog rescue center which cares for 50 plus
dogs at our center and around fifty more at a local temple. We
aim to have these dogs adopted within months of their arrival
unless they have medical problems, in which case we would keep
them at the center and care for them. We also neuter and treat
local street dogs. You would be given your own accommodation
(this is only available if you can commit for more than six
months) for a year in exchange for helping us in our effort to
have all of our dogs adopted within the year and eventually close
the center. Your day-to-day work will include helping with
adoptions (spreading awareness), treating and caring for the dogs
(feeding, cleaning, etc.), helping with rescues and fundraising.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX will still exist once the center dogs have
been adopted but we will only treat and care for the dogs at the
temple and on the street beyond this point. Bang Saphan is a well
hidden secret and we want to keep it that way except for
volunteers who appreciate the natural beauty of Thailand and a
peaceful harmonious place to stay that makes you think of
paradise. If you would like to come and volunteer with us we will
help you organize your trip. We can arrange transportation to the
area, advise you on flights, supply information about where to
eat and what is good for trips, etc. We don't charge you for
coming to volunteer; we just appreciate your help. Please read

VIETNAM
WE NEED AN ENGLISH TEACHER for the duration of one to six months.
This is a nonprofit that provides training and job placement for
unemployed and rural women in the nearby villages. We make
beautiful souvenirs and all profits go back to help more people
in need. Our craft school in Vinh Long Province, Southern
Vietnam, is also a place to host local and foreign tourists and
visitors who want to learn more about craft making and the
Vietnamese culture. The school is surrounded by a relaxing
garden, lotus ponds and native plants, with the Mekong River
going by the front yard. It is a great place for the guests to
chill out and learn about life in the Mekong Delta. Since the
team in our craft school, including the artisans who are rural
disadvantaged women, barely speak English, we are looking for
someone to be based here to teach the team English and how to
welcome the tourists. Or if the person knows bag and art design,
they can teach the artisans new designs. Since we are a
nonprofit, where all the profits we earn go back to support more
people in need, we are not able to provide for housing/food
stipend. Yet we are happy to help the volunteers to find housing.
