LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hi Gary, the Situations-Wanted ad you sent out last night has
found us a new position already. This is my third job so far from
The Caretaker Gazette. Thank you again! N. R., New York, NY

Congratulations, Nancy! Keep in mind that whenever you advertise
with us, your ad will be read by thousands of property owners who
are searching for people like you to take care of their property
needs.

Hi there! Well, as I mentioned earlier on, I got married in
January to the guy I met through The Caretaker Gazette who came
to work for me last summer after I placed my Gazette help-wanted
ad! And he has a subscription already so I guess we don't need
two of them! If you could check when his subscription expires,
then we'll just start using his and renew that subscription when
the time comes around. Thanks, L. G., Fritz Creek, AK

Linda that is great news about your new marriage! We have heard
of other marriages occurring via the Gazette advertising.
Although we are dedicated to property caretaking, marriages,
friendships, and other forms of networking and connections do
occur through the pages of the Gazette.

Dear Gary, thank you so much for running my help-wanted ad in the
Gazette. Through your kindness and thoughtfulness I have found my
housesitter - a lady from Texas, who read my ad in the Gazette
and subsequently thought: "This is for me." It all
started from there. Sherry is flying into Tasmania on Tuesday and
is the perfect person to look after my home and all my animals.
Sherry and I are both so excited, her looking forward to coming
to Australia and starting her travels in my home with animals,
and me being able to go on my holiday. It is the first time
Sherry is travelling out of the USA and WOW what a way to start
her one year journey to Australia, Thailand, Malaysia and Bali.
Thank you again, Gary, you are a gem. Kind regards, U. D.,
Promised Land, Tasmania

Dear Uschi, thanks for writing and for sharing your update about
finding a housesitter (all the way from Texas!) for your property
in Promised Land, Tasmania. It’s always a pleasure to hear
about global connections. I wish you and Sherry all the best and
I look forward to reading about your arrangement.

Hi Gary, I was so happy to find you on Twitter! I love seeing the
photos of the new positions on your Twitter feed. It's very
inspiring and sometimes I need inspiration! Are you on any other
sites besides Twitter? Are you also on Facebook? Thanks for
putting out a great publication and it's nice to see you on
Twitter! Regards, C. M., Minneapolis, MN

Hi Carol, thanks for your message! I'm glad you connected with us
on Twitter. The Caretaker Gazette has been online since 1995. As
far as other social networking sites, in addition to our Twitter
at twitter.com/housesitter and our blog at
caretakergazette.blogspot.com we are also on Facebook, Tumblr,
and Pinterest. Our subscribers who've joined us there tell us
that they also love seeing the photos of the new positions and
reading the caretaker profiles. Although we’ve joined these
social networking sites, the majority of our new subscribers and
advertisers still come to us directly via our website at
www.caretaker.org

modern city which lives in harmony with beautiful nature, using
renewable energy sources - geothermal power and glacial rivers.
The world’s northernmost capital bridges the Atlantic,
between Europe and North America. Reykjavík is spread
across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains and the
Atlantic Ocean on almost all sides. Reykjavik is often called
“the nightlife capital of the north”. But there is
more to Reykjavík than pubs and clubs. Reykjavík
also gathers the most interesting of Icelandic culture. It is an
incubator of new ideas and styles which often indicates new
global trends. It is an International city with a lively
cosmopolitan cultural scene surrounded with beautiful nature.
Visitors to Reykjavík experience easily the pure energy at
the heart of Iceland's capital city - whether from the boiling
thermal energy underground, the natural green energy within the
city and around it, or the lively culture and fun-filled
nightlife. In February you can see the Northern lights (Aurora
Borealis) in Iceland. In the area closer than 100 Km from

CARETAKER PROFILE
“The American Dream (for some) is NOT 9-5!”
Date of Birth: 12/05/58
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Interests: Bible Study, Photography, Writing Children's Books....
and of course, the Great Outdoors!
Quote: “Time is better spent building relationships rather
than bank accounts!" (An original of my own!)

John with Crissy Mae, one of the dogs.

Back in the late 90's when everyone was into the "Y-2K"
frame of mind, I had the good fortune to discover The Caretaker
Gazette through listening to my local radio station (WDLR -
Delaware, Ohio) where Mr. Gary Dunn was being interviewed. It was
during that interview that I was introduced to a lifestyle that I
never knew existed! I was glad that Mr. Dunn gave his phone
number over the air during that interview, as after work that
day, he set into motion a new lifestyle for me, that for the past
14 years now I've enjoyed more than any other living experience
that I've been blessed to enjoy! Thank you Gary Dunn!
Initially, the caretaking position that I was accepted to fill in
southwest Oregon was established as a trial period situation
where after one year, (if I liked it and chose to remain), I'd
begin paying a small amount of monthly “rent” for the
privilege of living in one of the most beautiful settings I've
ever seen! As it's turned out, after that first year, the owner
of the property was so impressed with my personal character and
the “value” that I brought to the property with my
skills and “can-do” attitude, that he actually waived
the afore mentioned rent and began paying me a small stipend on a
monthly basis! WOW! That went on uninterrupted for 12 years!
After those 12 very satisfying and rewarding years of interacting
with one another, the owner of the property decided that it was
time to sell that particular piece of acreage.
The 40 acres of property was purchased by a private corporation
which already owned property adjacent to it - with the request
that I consider staying on as their “unpaid” resident
property caretaker. Since serving the new owners, I have
maintained the same levels of freedoms on the property (without
the small monthly stipend) that I had previously held with the
former owner. Basically, I have the incredible blessing of living
where I do, as if I own the property without the worries and
financial burdens of having to pay for it!
For my livelihood, I've successfully established myself in the
local community as a well respected, independently self-employed,
“Building and Grounds Maintenance Man” –
“Handyman” – “Jack of all Trades”
(Master of None).
This caretaker lifestyle has also enabled me to build upon a
life-long interest of being a nature photographer as well as a
creative writer of fictional children's books. Those pursuits and
interests are paying off in many exciting ways!
Now I know that I've painted a rather “dreamy”
picture of a lifestyle with what I've shared thus far, but make
no mistake, through the years and along the miles, there have
also been a few painful “cost factors” worth
mentioning. For example, the off-the-grid lifestyle may be an
ideal experience for some, while others might see it as being
more like an isolated prison term. Such was the case for my
ex-wife who, after six years of trying, just gave up on me and
the caretaker lifestyle to move back to her coveted civilization.

Too, there was a year-long saga that involved dealing with a
chicken-eating, canine-killing cougar! Without factoring in the
loss of much sleep and rest, the partial cost of that particular
episode came to:
1. The loss of an entire flock of 50+ free range chickens.
2. The loss of a 7-year-old male Golden retriever.
3. The loss of a 9-year-old female Siberian Husky / Malamute
mix.
4. An unsuccessful attack upon my 6-year-old female German
Shepherd / Rotty mix that I was able to save with my timely
presence and a powerful battery operated spotlight at 3:00 A.M.
5. And finally, a head to head confrontation of that 130-pound
male cougar and my 165-pound, 4-year-old male Newfoundland. The
cougar chose to climb a tree where I was finally able to dispatch
him!
Tranquility, Peace and Quiet were finally a part of my mountain
living experience once again!
More good news.....A new and exciting chapter of my life began
six months ago when I met a wonderful woman to whom I am now
engaged! Thus far, she loves the location and the off-the-grid
lifestyle that I have to offer her as a shared effort in property
caretaking! Even the afore mentioned cougar story hasn't scared
her away! (Although, she has strongly suggested that I teach her
a thing or two about proper firearms handling! - Done!)
Overall, the caretaking lifestyle has brought an incredible
quality of life to me that I never knew was possible when working
in the professional 9-5 world, while trying to achieve the
“American Dream” (which I now believe to be more of
an American nightmare!).
Thank you Gary Dunn, and thank you Caretaker Gazette! Sincerely,
John and Bonita

I AM AN OLDER WOMAN, living on five mostly undeveloped acres just
outside Roswell, NM (yes, that Roswell) who needs help mostly
outside, including landscaping (xeriscape), fencing and turning
at least half of the property into a site suitable for goats,
llamas and chickens, as well as a garden (and, if you're into
cooking or housekeeping, I wouldn't turn that down either). I
also have several older motorcycles (my means of transportation)
that could use some TLC if anyone has mechanical knowledge. My
priorities currently are repairing barbed-wire fences, building a
chicken coop, putting in a vegetable garden, some outdoor
plumbing, and others as needed. You'd get a private room (shared
bath) in my home, and could work as many or as few hours a day as
you'd like. I'm not a cook, and I work very odd hours, so I'll
buy your food but for the most part, it'll be up to you to cook.
The help will be nice, but just meeting interesting folks (which
is what I've done lately) is the best part. I'm also a font of
knowledge about what there is to do in New Mexico (aside from
Roswell aliens) and would give you lots of time to explore. My
only restrictions are no pets (I have two very old cats),
firearms, drugs and smokers must smoke outdoors only. For more
information, please call XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

THIS IS AN HISTORIC HIPPIE COMMUNE from the 60's, which has
become a working permaculture farm for vegetables, berries, fruit
and chickens. The Rio Hondo drains Taos Ski Valley (18 miles
away) into the Rio Grande (one mile away). Our fields of grasses,
sage, pinion pine and juniper look up to the Sangre de Christo
Mountains and down on the Rio Hondo gorge. We live and teach
self-sufficiency, have a large adobe solar home and shop,
outbuildings, greenhouse, and root cellar. We love art, music,
beauty, simplicity, natural healing, and helping one another
attain skills to live successfully in challenging times. We're
happy to share teaching and learning farming and survival skills
with others who are open, flexible, and independent. We accept a
limited number of farm helpers but are always open to meet new
people and to talk. Experience is great yet a solid work ethic
and genuine interest in sustainable agriculture are more
important. A good helper should be able to listen to directions,
but also be innovative and take initiative. Farming in the
northern New Mexico climate is challenging and full of surprises,
so it's difficult to set regular, daily task schedules most times
of the year. Thus, we are looking for people who are flexible and
adaptable, who can focus on one task and then quickly change
gears to something else. This includes the ability to work
different schedules at different times. We expect a solid
twenty-five hours per week, and offer flexible down-time to
pursue your own interests here or in the culturally rich nearby
village of Taos and New Mexico itself. This experience is more
than farming. New Buffalo is also about living and working
together in a group setting. Though there are no children at the
moment, we are already a diverse group of people in terms of age,
and the ability to work and live in a multi-generational setting
is a must. We are looking for people with the emotional maturity
and communication skills to be able to discuss issues that might
arise with honesty and compassion. At the moment we are hoping to
fill a few, very specific, longer-term positions. The first,
ideally at least a four-month minimum, is for part-time farming
and part-time housekeeping that would include food and a private
room in the main building. The housekeeping tasks are fairly
light, but helping to manage the main building is a must, and
could involve helping occasional guests, workshops, or retreats.
The second position or rather, positions would be another
four-month minimum stay, preferably from June through September.
Ideally, a couple would fill this position and live in a
comfortable two-room adobe attached to our new 900' greenhouse.
There is also a very rustic, plumbed space which could be
developed into a kitchen. This position would be mostly farming
and includes daily management of the greenhouse attached to the
facility. Work could be shared between two people, but a genuine
interest in small-scale, regenerative agriculture is a must. If
any of these situations seem interesting, please write to us and
we would be happy to discuss it further and answer any questions.
Please mail your letter to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

NICARAGUA

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. My name is Celine, a 29-year-old French lady
who is living near the city of Leon, Nicaragua. I would like to
tell you a little story, so pay attention please: I have
purchased land in a little authentic fishing and surfing village
in Nicaragua called Jiquilillo, in order to start a non-profit
project for children and teenagers. This village is beautiful. I
bought some land and I would like to build a playground area and
an art school. Currently everything is in process, the more help
I get, the faster we'll be, and obviously the sooner my social
non-profit project will be done. It is not an organization. I am
doing everything on my own. I have a lot of ideas in mind but I
need people to make them real. It would be great to get some
construction workers with experience, carpenters, painters, etc.
and naturally some engineers. Child lovers with no experience are
also welcome. My idea is that every single child develops his/her
creativity, imagination, etc. to give them a chance to learn art,
painting, languages, jewelry making, dancing, playing
instruments, circus stuff, cooking and many other things, that
are totally possible to learn in another country but not here. I
would like to give them a place where they could play freely,
learn skating, climbing on a bouldering wall, play ping pong and
table football, as extra activities after school, as they have
plenty of time and expect to make the most of it. I first need
volunteers who are able to help me to build a concrete skate
bowl, a wooden climbing bouldering wall, a ping pong table and
many other games. Also, renovate an eleven meter long school bus
which actually will be the volunteering place initially. The bus
will consist of a five bed sleeping area, and another area for a
kitchen shared with a table and some seats. Work will consist in
painting the interior part of the bus and install all the
facilities. Currently, there is just a toilet and a shower and an
open rancho where a campsite can be placed, with hammocks, a gas
cooker, seats, etc. Naturally you must be a nature lover. It is
all I can provide now because everything needs to be built, but
once the construction is finished, it would be a lovely, colorful
and artistic place where everyone will be welcome. Once the bus
is done, volunteers will be given shelter in exchange to 3/4
every day hours giving language, art, and yoga classes. The place
offers lots of opportunities for the volunteers during their free
time such as surfing, climbing volcanoes, fishing, etc. so, if
you are an adventurous traveler who feels like helping me to give
a better future for the children, I can offer you a place to stay
if you give me a hand with the project and make a better world.

NORWAY

INTERESTED IN SELF-SUFFICIENCY? Want to help build a community?
Love the sea? On an organic farm a few hours north of Oslo, our
collective is for anyone keen to learn, share ideas, and work
hard. We are building a sailboat and when she is finished (we aim
for late 2013), we want to sail the world, visiting other
eco-villages, collecting knowledge and traveling in the most
eco-friendly way possible. Anyone who helps us out will have the
chance to join our crew. We also work on the farm, building up
the infrastructure to create a stable base for our community. We
live with our dog, the farm cat and some (very) free-range
chickens. We keep bees and make jam; this year we harvested our
first crop of potatoes and planted next seasons raspberries.
Eventually we hope to grow all our food. We want to create a
place that will continue to flourish, where crops, thoughts,
adventures, and of course boats, can grow! We ask for a minimum
commitment of thirty days, with a week-long trial period. We
welcome anyone as long as you are happy to work hard and help out
where needed. There are enough beds for eight volunteers and the
schedule is Monday to Friday, with approximately eight to nine
hours of work a day. Please bring your pets if you can! Boat work
is predominantly during the winter and jobs include welding the
deck, installing the engine, sewing the sails, constructing the
mast and fitting the interior. If you have any particular skills
in these areas, please let us know. On the farm you may be asked
to do anything from plowing and harvesting to jam making, roof
building, beekeeping, digging, painting, or grinding the barley
for our morning porridge. It is guaranteed that you will be asked
to cook; our diet is vegetarian and we try to eat only seasonal
food, grown as locally as possible. On the weekends there are
forests and mountains to explore, and we have skis, tents and
bikes available for those who want to go adventuring. Come help
us out and join our tribe of sea-gypsies! Please send an email to
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX explaining why you would be
interested in our community and please place this in Capital
Letters in the Subject Line: SEA GYPSY APLLICATION so we know you
have been reading our description here. Thanks.

area, advise you on flights, supply information about where to
eat and what is good for trips, etc. We don't charge you for
coming to volunteer; we just appreciate your help. Please read
