Hi there, I am on a Caretaker Gazette assignment right now in
Grenada. After many years of subscribing we are so thrilled to be
finally living our dream and the Caretaker Gazette made that
possible. I am dog sitting at a resort for three months in
Grenada and as soon as I return home to the US in October I will
happily renew my subscription so that I can search for my next
assignment. Thanks, J. B., Palm Desert, CA

Great, Julie! We would like to do a future Caretaker Profile
on you and your experiences there and we will email you the
details on how you can submit your Caretaker Profile story to us,
so we can then publish it in a future Gazette issue.

My wife and I responded to an ad for a position in Costa Rica
that ran in your Gazette last year. We weren't selected for the
position at the time and we weren't in the right place work and
life wise that we were ready to pursue something else. As luck
would have it the landowner of the Costa Rica property emailed to
tell us that the caretakers he had lined up for the position
didn't work out so he wanted to know if we were still interested.
We were offered the position! We're about to embark on a new
experience and a new adventure thanks to you. K.L. and B.B.,
Saint Petersburg, FL

That’s good news, Ken! Thanks for sharing it. Your
situation is not unusual - sometimes, for various reasons, things
do not work out with the first applicants selected so the
property owner will return to the applicant pool to find the
perfect match for his/her situation.

Hi Gary, thank you for sending me at least a dozen qualified
caretakers through my ad that ran in The Caretaker Gazette. I
have been advertising with you for a long time and I think this
year's applicants are the best yet! I think all have great
qualifications and it's going to be tough making a decision.
Thank you for your great service and for sending so many great
people my way. Blessings and best wishes. J.P., Anchorage, AK

Hi Jen, I appreciate your taking the time to write to us. I'm
happy to know that the Gazette has helped you find a great
caretaker for your position. We hear from property owners that
they have found the most qualified and the best people for their
positions via their ads in the Gazette.

I just want to say that the Caretaker Profiles you have in each
issue are one of my favorite features! I feel like I am right
there alongside your subscribers and I've learned a lot about the
process of caretaking, from start to finish, from responding to
an ad, what is entailed in the hiring process and then details
about the caretaking and housesitting jobs themselves. Look
forward to taking my first position and submitting my Caretaker
Profile someday! Thanks for the inspiration! T.C., Boulder, Co

Thanks for your email, Terry. Many of our subscribers enjoy
the profiles too and, as current and prospective
caretakers/housesitters, they've told us that the information
they gain from reading them is very helpful to them. We look
forward to reading your own profile one day!

HOUSE/PET-SITTER needed in Wondecla, from 12/19/2011 until
1/7/2012. We have two dogs, and they are house dogs, but we have
a big yard and they love to be outside as well. They have a walk
in the afternoon, not strictly structured i.e. we walk around the
back paddock so they can explore. We prefer them to sleep inside
at night, no problem as they are house trained. Not really fussy
eaters, and, love a bone (good as bribery when we go out). We
have small acreage backing onto a permanent creek. The house is
three bedrooms, with a verandah overlooking the property. We
don't have a pool, but there is a water hole for swimming in the
Wild River Park at Herberton. We are centrally located near The
Tablelands waterfalls, an easy drive from Lake Tinaroo, and about
80 klms from Innisfail down the Kennedy Highway. Really the only
specific task would be to look after our dogs, as our place is
pretty well self sufficient. The only other thing would be to
give the garden occasional water. Please mail a letter and your
references to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Australia.

HOUSE SWAP WANTED. We would like to exchange our Australian home
for one in England for a few months. Swap your home or canal boat
in southern England for our bungalow in Bowen, Queensland
Australia. We went to the UK about 15 years ago and didn't get to
anywhere near what we wanted. We want to travel all over the UK
and Ireland and possibly France. We think about three months
would suit us. We would also like to spend some time in a canal
boat if possible. I am a retired marine engineer and my wife is a
retired nurse so someone willing to swap a canal boat for three
months for a house in Australia would be our first preference.
Our house is what is known as a bungalow and is built of masonry
brick and very comfortable. We have, of course, TV and internet
access. Bowen is a small town (9,000 population) on the coast
between Mackay and Townsville. We have a car for the use of a
"home swapper" and two dogs. They live very close to us
and are terribly spoilt. Bowen is close to the Whitsunday islands
and although no services operate from here (I have no idea why
not!) services are available from Airlie Beach which is a 40
minute drive from here. I have a 50 foot yacht which could be
made available to the right person. The climate is tropical and
the rainfall for the time of year we are looking at is very low
as our rainy season doesn't start until about Christmas. Our
requirements are not cast in granite and we would be open to
minor modifications if they suited everybody. If you are
interested in doing a house swap, please email

EXPERIENCE TROPICAL SUSTAINABLE Living. No experience necessary.
Prefer couple or two adults to caretake Dem Dats Doin, a self
sufficient integrated homestead. Age not a factor if you are in
reasonably good health. A minimum commitment of four weeks or
more, anytime of the year. For details, email:

PET-SITTER NEEDED in rural Bulgaria starting in May 2012. This is
a highly unusual property caretaker position, with pets to care
for too. I have a lovely acre in Bulgaria, with a comfortable
caravan, a kitchen, courtyard and a shower room. I live in a very
quiet rural area, with no night life. I need an imaginative and
responsible person to live here while I am away working from time
to time. No smokers taken. Must have references. Help with travel
costs can be included if handyman - or handy-woman - jobs are
undertaken. Basic duties are dog and cat care, watering and
weeding - no more than three hours work per day. You are welcome
to pursue your studies or work using the internet. This would be
suitable for someone looking for a peaceful break with light
duties. Please email Anna at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX for more

The ad in The Caretaker Gazette was short and sweet:
Winter caretaker needed in New Mexico for 200+ acres of quiet
country living. Off-grid/remote living experience a must. No
At that moment, I was sitting at a desk in an office in the
heart of mid-Atlantic sprawl, halfway through a summer writing
internship at EARTH Magazine, and I couldn’t resist sending
an email. Two days later, after a flurry of phone conversations
with Judy, an artist who didn’t own a digital camera, but
who assured me her place was something special, I found myself
saying, “Yes, I’ll see you in October!”
I had never been to New Mexico, but I had heard great things and
the West was calling me back. Before moving east to earn a
master’s degree in science writing from Johns Hopkins
University, I had been living in Oregon, housesitting a remote
off grid cabin in the Coast Range and I was eager to return to
rural, rent-free life.
I finished my masters and my internship (and turned down a
staff-writing position), packed my car and my Border Collie mix
Bowie and headed to New Mexico via Savannah, Georgia and New
Orleans. Upon my arrival in Cerrillos, I was not disappointed.
Judy's place turned out to be a stunningly beautiful off-grid
solar-powered Earthship surrounded by thousands of acres of
wide-open land. It was love at first sight.
Three years later, I still can't believe my good fortune. More
than a hundred people applied for the Earthship caretaking job,
but Judy says she just had a good feeling about me, as I did
about her, and we both consider ourselves lucky to have found one
another. So far, I have spent two winters in the Earthship, from
October to April, while Judy and her husband Tom relax poolside
in Florida, near their kids and grandkids.
This spring, after Tom and Judy returned from Florida, I decided
I wanted to stay in New Mexico, so I spread the word through the
local community that I was looking for a summer gig. Within a few
days, I got one. I'm now caretaking another place in Cerrillos,
exchanging gardening and dog sitting for rent-free living at the
Garden of the Gods, a geologic wonder surrounded by towering fins
of red, white and pink sandstone. As a former geology major, avid
climber and lifelong rock hound, I'm in heaven.
Caretaking is such a sweet gig, but it's not for everybody. You
have to be extremely flexible and mobile – I move every
four to six months, on average, often all the way across the
country – and have some way to make outside income, no
matter where you are.
The nomadic lifestyle suits me perfectly: Everything I own,
including my two Border Collie mixes Bowie and Dio, fits in my
car and I've fine-tuned the art of feeling at home no matter
where I am in the world. Caretaking has also been an important
secret of my success as a writer: I couldn't make a living
freelancing if I had to pay rent every month (conversely, I also
couldn't be a professional housesitter if I didn't have the
flexibility of freelancing from anywhere). Whenever I apply for a
caretaking job, I send along a few clips of my work and
I’ve found a lot of really wonderful people who are eager
to support the arts by offering me their place to stay,
In the past six years, my caretaking side-career has also landed
me on a horse ranch elsewhere in New Mexico, an empty mansion
overlooking Montana's Bitterroot Valley, a one-room dune shack on
Cape Cod National Seashore and a 200-year-old Cape on the coast
of Maine. In between gigs I hit the back roads and hiking trails
that crisscross this great country; I’ve been to 49 states,
with only Alaska yet to go.
Along the way I have written dozens of stories about the places
I’ve lived and visited, many of which have been published
in places like EARTH Magazine’s Travels in Geology column,
Smithsonian, High Country News and the anthologies Best
Women’s Travel Writing 2010 and Best Travel Writing 2011.
In addition, I started a travel writing blog, The Blonde Coyote.
I have seen a lot of this country in the past six years and I
hope my vagabonding, road tripping and outdoor adventure stories
on will inspire people to get out and see more of the world.
I’m often asked when I'm going to settle down. Hopefully,
never! I love being a nomad! Sure, it has its drawbacks –
some days I do feel adrift – but caretaking has taken me
all over the country and I've seen and experienced a lot of the
world, while accumulating very little literal or figurative
baggage. I'll go almost anywhere (I have applied for jobs in
Alaska, Nevada, Virginia, California, Washington State, and
Vermont) as long as the living is rent-free and dog friendly and
I can take a hike every day, preferably by walking out my back
door and into wilderness. Caretaking has set me free in the world
and as a travel writer, that kind of freedom is priceless.

and to help us when we are here. The tasks are such that it takes
more than just us to handle them. We are going to be in the
states, as Charity will be giving birth this spring and we need
willing and able people to care for our home and property while

leaving sometime in November or December. We want to be very

holding a good presence here, gardening, beautifying the land,
and weed control, collecting fruit from the fruit trees, cleaning
of the house/maintaining a clean and sacred space. We are
constantly cultivating and working on new projects. The tasks
here are not difficult; we mostly need a presence here and
someone to keep up with the maintenance of the property. We are
very open to new ideas and projects! Speaking Spanish is very
helpful and pretty necessary! There are only a couple of people
in the village who speak very little English. If there is
interest or questions you can reach Charity at

TRADE HOUSE AND USE OF LAND for 20 hours per week. Searching for
a strong motivated individual or couple to work and care for a
beautiful secluded twenty five acre homestead located in
beautiful Blanco. The individual(s) must be enthusiastic about
working on a diversified farm; we have a variety of plants that
will require attention, they are as follows: one acre of
Muscadine grapes - approximately two hundred vines, a small
orchard, blackberry bushes and Goji Berry bushes. To maintain our
planting, weeding and watering must be done in addition to mowing
the rows of the grapes. Our goal is to expand the various fruit
trees once the drought and high temperatures cease so we can
safely plant with success so that we can realize our dream of
having a U-Pick Farm where folks can come and enjoy the fruits of
our labor in an enjoyable setting. When we launch the business we
will speak to you about an opportunity to profit share with us as
an opportunity to stipend your income. Goats and a miniature
horse also occupy this beautiful farm. They have been around
humans all of their lives and require an animal lover who will
interact with them. They require feeding and watering each and
every day. The interaction is important to us, if you are not an
animal lover, then you need not apply. As with any farm there are
other chores to be done, cleaning out shelters, additional
mowing, weed eating around the property, fences mended and
maintained, landscaping will be an ongoing process as we work to
effectively add the ascetics of our farm. We will trade twenty
hours of the above work for a nice two bedroom, one bath house
with a separate workshop. You may have one small pasture for your
own use. You can also take advantage of chicken coops in which
you may purchase your own poultry and sell the eggs or use for
personal use. There are raised garden beds where you can grow
your own vegetables either for your own consumption or to sell at
local farmer’s market outside of working for the farm.
There are occasions that we will require additional work hours
for various projects and will pay nine dollars per hour. We
occupy another property a few miles away and also know of
neighbors who occasionally look for labor to be done. We are
conscious of our environment and living off the land and hope you
as the applicant feel the same way we do; we strictly enforce our
above tasks but invite you to make it a home for yourself and the
opportunities it could bring. We insist you satisfactorily pass a
background check and we require references that we may speak to.
We are excited to share our farm with someone who treats it as a
home and who will care for our property and animals as we would.
Please email XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Thank you.

HOUSE/PET-SITTER NEEDED for one year in Sequim, Washington. We
are looking for a responsible animal loving couple or individual
to look after our home, property, and our family of five standard
poodles, beginning in mid-December 2011, or possibly in
mid-November 2011, and running for one year. We are located in a
rural area, surrounded by water and mountains, and lots of hiking

upkeep of the house, and some yard and small maintenance in
exchange for a guest room and two available bathrooms, as well as
around 3,000 square feet of house and paid utilities. The dogs

love human company. They range in age from one at 10 and a half,
and the rest four and five years old. Their exercise routine
involves running and playing together on the property and playing
with humans, fetching etc. These dogs are definite characters and
love to hang out around the house and property with you. They
sleep in the house, on their bed or yours, only if you choose
that! We do the grooming and keep them very short. Poodles don't
shed which is great. The property is around six acres, has a
pond, is fenced, and is mowed once or twice a year by us, or
another individual. A close friend who is a vet tech comes
regularly to help with and one horse and one mini, and the

horses. There is a pool which is shut down in the winter, but
come Spring does need some simple maintenance such as cleaning
out leaves etc. There is a company who does any major work on the
pool. The position is for one year, and we would be returning
several times within that period, however there is a separate
part of the house where we stay, and there is lots of privacy.
Unfortunately this is not a situation that is suitable for a
family or an individual with children. In addition, the house/pet
sitter cannot bring a dog or cat with them, and must be
non-smokers. Please email a letter of introduction and references
of past pet and housesitting positions to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I began pet and housesitting in Syracuse, New York seven years
ago. I am 62, a non-smoker, quiet, and provide a peaceful
presence. Since 2010 I've traveled across the country to sits
from Austin and Canyon Lake, Texas to Maryland, Massachusetts and
Maine, with several return sits in Central New York, Maryland,
and Canyon Lake, Texas. I enjoy my work as a home and pet sitter.
I adapt to your pet's schedule, not expecting them to adjust to
mine. During my years as a homemaker I was responsible for five
homes. I dealt with everything from new construction and custom
building to fixer uppers and a 200-year-old home we redesigned,
gutted, and rebuilt. I supervised the entire rebuild. Prior to
traveling across country this past year I was the receptionist
for Preswick Glen, a Senior Living Community in New Hartford, New
York. My primary responsibility was responding to resident needs.
I was frequently the "first responder" in the event of
an emergency, medical or otherwise. I feel confident that I can
provide for the needs of your home, property, and pets during
long or short term sits. Your pets and home will be in safe,
competent and caring hands while you are away. References
available. For additional information please email Carol at
