LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
After returning from a much needed and long overdue vacation to
the Virgin Islands, I realized that Boston was just too harsh of
a climate to consider growing old in. I was working as a Pilates
instructor, and while I loved it, I was never going to save
enough to retire or get out of the renter’s market. My husband
was getting up at 5am every day in all seasons to catch a bus and
a train to work in a corporate kitchen so we could have health
benefits. Compared to five billion people in the world, we were
lucky. We had plenty of friends, food and warmth, but we were
living in an expensive city just working to pay the rent, not
enjoying life to the fullest. I knew there had to be something
more for us out there where we could still work hard, but in a
friendlier, less stress inducing atmosphere.
A friend told me about The Caretaker Gazette and I signed on and
began my search. I had several ideas in mind, but the most
important: the job needed to take us both, have a salary and
benefits and a rent-free apartment. And it had to be somewhere
warmer than Boston! I had worked high end housekeeping, food
service and floral arranging aboard motor yachts and my husband
is a culinary school trained chef. It took eight months for me to
find the perfect job that ticked all the boxes for both me and my
husband.
We answered an advert in The Caretaker Gazette that was listed
by an agency/head hunter. I kept it brief: a paragraph for each
of us and pictures of my husband’s cooking and a few of us just
having fun. The agency responded right away and asked for
resumes. We had several phone and Skype interviews with the
partners of the agency before we ever met or spoke with the
owners of the property. After an initial Skype interview with our
current employers, they flew us to California to meet
face-to-face and to check out the town. Overjoyed is the best
word to describe our feelings at the time.
We had a few months before the position started, so we began to
sell all of our furniture, say our farewells and plan our
adventure. We had to buy a car to get us across the country and
away we went. We took three weeks exploring the southwest before
we arrived on the West Coast.
Our new caretaking position took us to Ojai, California, nestled
in a valley about twenty-five minutes from one of the most
beautiful coastlines in the world. While the housekeeping and
cooking came naturally enough, we were about to be introduced to
pump rooms, irrigation systems, pool and spa maintenance, wine
making, gardeners, contractors, light carpentry and plumbing and
firefighting! (We always hire an electrician…wiring is not a
hobby.) It has been an amazing experience for us both.
Our rent-free cottage is nestled in a citrus grove, with oranges,
lemons, limes, Ojai Pixies - with fig, avocado and loquat trees
in the mix. I was able to get beehives and chickens - both
long-time dreams of mine. My husband is gardening with gusto and
is currently taking back an acre of unused land for additional
food growing. There was a defunct greenhouse on the property that
I have turned into an orchid oasis. We are in paradise.
We work a not-so-traditional forty-hour work week with two days
off per week. We take full advantage of them by cruising up and
down the California coast. San Diego, LA, Venice Beach, Santa
Monica, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Palm Springs. The list goes on
and on and we keep adding destinations to it, always finding time
to explore a new beach and do a little snorkeling or napping.
We love the location, the town, the town’s people and our
employers. We have been here for three and a half years now. And,
while we plan on staying here until we retire, I still renew my
subscription to The Caretaker Gazette every year. Not only do I
want to support Gary and all the wonderful work he is doing, but
I find the ads inspiring and I like to see the jobs available to
retirees.
Thanks so much, Gary, for this wonderful publication and good
luck to anyone signing on! It takes time to find the right fit,
but it is well worth the effort.
Cheers, Monica and
Fred, Ojai, California

day operations of a Toronto residence and will work with a team
on the oversight of a vacation home in France. In France the

high-level management of the property, including any major
construction and maintenance projects, and assist with the upkeep
of household manuals. In Toronto, the candidate will be much more
hands-on, and be responsible for all the details of the home.
Both homes have appropriate housekeeping staff. For both
residences, the successful candidate will be one that thrives in
an environment with defined processes and standards. They enjoy
maintaining and developing the manuals and checklists that
support a well-organized home. The position requires a high

This role requires that the candidate be comfortable working in
close collaboration with a very hands-on homeowner who cares
greatly for their home. Daily “touch base” meetings, weekly
reports, and an open and constant dialogue define the management
style of the principal. Finally, both homes are highly cultured,
semi-formal, but are kept to the highest standards. Duties: work
with all staff and services to maintain household and property
standards, train and manage all household staff, ensure that all
household manuals are regularly updated for both residences,
keeping the Toronto manuals current and working with the French

oversight of all exterior trades, oversee household security and

ICELAND
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED in the forest in the Far East of Iceland from
September 3 to September 18, 2022. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
volunteers will be working on a project in the beautiful
Hallormsstaoaskogur National Forest doing nature and
environment-oriented tasks. Hallormsstaoaskogur is the largest
wooded area of the country. The reforestation of the area has
been going on since a protection law was passed in 1899. The
oldest part of the woodland is accessible by good hiking trails.
The area offers a great variety of trails, such as one through
the deepest valley of the country and one up to Sandfell where
the view is quite magnificent. Small streams run through the land
where visitors can cool down on warm summer days. The Eastfjords
is a region with a special landscape, dominated by long, narrow
fjords and steep mountains. The wild reindeer of Iceland are
found here; the herd counts between three and four thousand
animals. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX has been cooperating with the
Icelandic Forest Service and our groups of volunteers have been
helping out for some years, with very good results for the
participants, the projects and the Icelandic nature conservation
and reforestation efforts. The main tasks will be to maintain
hiking paths, build stairs, make and put up signs. Volunteers
will also put up benches and tables in the forest. Other tasks
will be to trim branches and beautify groves that are located
near hiking paths. Well maintained paths enable people to visit
these amazing areas without damaging the surroundings and in
addition our volunteers’ work helps to improve safety for
visitors. Last but not least, volunteers can explore the
surroundings of the location and enjoy free-time activities
arranged in cooperation with our local project host. No previous
experience is necessary, but the work is demanding and requires a
good physical condition. As it is outdoors work, volunteers shall
be ready to adapt and be flexible with the working and free-time
schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to
perform some of the tasks or activities planned. Weather is
unpredictable and it can be cold and/or rainy, be prepared to
experience all kinds of weather. We recommend bringing good
walking shoes/boots, warm and/or waterproof clothes (under
layers, overcoats, scarves, gloves and hats), as most of the
tasks and activities take place outside. Volunteers will sleep in
beds in a house belonging to the Icelandic Forest Service. The
house is fully equipped. Please bring your own sleeping bag. For

Jinni Mitchell
One night in 2002 I heard a loud crash from inside my mother’s
house. At the time I was living in the outside cottage while
teaching art at the University of Hawaii and the Honolulu Waldorf
High School. The sound was her falling and led me to make an
abrupt decision to leave my teaching career to be a full-time
caregiver for my mother. For seven years I was keeping a close
lookout for her shenanigans and the house. As things go, I would
often find her sitting on the curb down the street and we would
hang out for a bit before I’d help her up and walk home. After
she passed, I left with my trusted dog, Trousers, and embarked on
a five year walkabout.
I was a chef for a prominent Silicon Valley family and later
managed an artists and writers retreat in New Mexico. At the
retreat my main function was keeping the residents safe and
inspired while conducting daily maintenance of the property. I
was building my skills for what would lay ahead in my future.
Next stop, Cold Canyon in Malibu! I mucked out a horse stable
and got a part-time job as a hiking guide at the Biggest Loser
Resort. I learned well over 20 trails in the Santa Monica
Mountains. I then moved to Southeast Asia and taught in Phuket,
Thailand, Singapore, and Vientiane, Laos. Years later, I returned
to Hawaii to work for a language school.
I soon moved into a house just a mile from my childhood Hawaiian
home and became a live-in host for an Airbnb rental. This was a
daily marathon of room cleaning, midnight check-ins and home
upgrades which awarded me the title of Super Host. I remodeled
what I could and with the help of some repair men, the yard and
house were transformed into a pleasant oasis.
After that experience, I came to live and work on an acre, ocean
front property via an ad I saw in The Caretaker Gazette.
Initially my duty was to care for the dog as the owner was
normally only on the property for approximately four months out
of the year. This high end property has seven day a week
gardeners. Even with that presence, it’s important to have a
full-time caretaker so the property seems alive and when problems
occur after hours they can be swiftly addressed.
Now we come to the Covid Pandemic. During this extremely tense
and serious time for the world, the owner of the property became
stranded in Hawaii. She has been here for well over two years now
and is still here. Having the owner live here full-time has made
the position far more serious and I became her personal
assistant. This position included making frequent meals, all her
medical appointments and finding holistic means of healing as she
is a fit, yet elderly woman. Besides knowing the vendors for the
property, I implemented and oversaw improvements including an
electric chair to get upstairs, new air conditioning units
installed, updated sprinklers and lighting systems for the yard.
People ask me how I found the place I live in today and the best
advice I can give is to leave no stone unturned if this is what
you want. I first subscribed to The Caretaker Gazette in 2016.
The Gazette gave me the feeling that I had options and I looked
forward to each issue.
Each lesson I have learned along the path has helped me to
become a more serious and professional property caretaker. Never
overstep the owner and instruct any other workers on the property
unless you are told to do so by the owner. Don’t tell the
gardener to do something because you feel it would look better,
always ask the owner first if you think something could change
and be prepared to be shot down. It’s best to let the owner
give you the instructions.
Even if you are finished with your job for the day before other
workers are finished, never, ever use the property as though it
was your own. This means no lunch guests unless you're allowed to
have them in your quarters only. Never give your friends a tour
of the property unless you have permission and no other staff is
on duty. Don’t let the other contracted employees see you
sunbathing or using the pool, even if the owner has given you
permission. Always remember the property is not yours and some
behavior harbors resentment with the other staff. Always be
pleasant to all staff members because it makes your life much
nicer.
Don’t assume the owner knows what you have done that you feel
has “saved” the property in one way or another. Tell the
owner when you think something seems off. Keep a daily journal of
the things you do. Nothing fancy, just things like, “found a
vodka bottle over the fence by beach access and checked outside
access to make sure nothing else unusual or saw a broken
sprinkler head and informed the gardener.”
Pathways in the garden
Jinni skimming the beautiful ocean front pool!
The gardeners aren't on property at night so they may place
plants in front of the lights, because they don’t know the
evening routine. No need to get upset with them, as I’ve seen
someone do before, they honestly didn’t know, just inform them
nicely and be done with it. Don’t talk about anyone else or
their work habits on the property, it is not your business. Just
keep those thoughts to yourself unless what they are doing can
impact the property in a negative way.
The thing I truly love about where I live now is of course the
gardens and the ocean. Nature is so important for me and I wake
up long before the sunrise to enjoy the peace and rising sun. The
birds are fantastic. We even have two protected bird breeds here
and it’s never boring watching them nest and leave. I love that
this oasis is also hidden and once I leave the gates I’m not
far from all my errands. That said, I’m happy in remote areas
as well. The challenge is that the property has staff for half a
day 7 days a week and my living area is like a fish bowl. People
knocking on my door for a key they forgot or leaf blowers going
on for hours makes it hard to hear. I use this time to run
errands for the owner or take my dog, Knuckles, off property to
let the others work. Something that I’m struggling with
recently is not feeling appreciated. The cottage house I use to
cook and make art was damaged and is still not in working order
after five months. I have been eating out or having cold food for
this time and it's beginning to turn my smile upside down.
Also, after confronting a trespasser, leading him off the
property and speaking with police, the owner never once asked how
that made me feel and if I still felt safe. I’m fine but the
experience was daunting and a little recognition would be nice.
Also, in this situation where the owner is normally gone seven
months out of the year but has been here uninterrupted for two
and half years, I have become both property caretaker and
personal assistant and, well, it is really exhausting at times. I
don’t want to have a political discussion at 8:00 pm or at any
time actually. And I actually do see the bright side of things,
it's not an act, but after six hours of doom and gloom next to
me, my mood may have altered a little. But nothing that taking my
dog for a walk can’t fix. And lastly, yes you should pick up
your dog's poop, don’t let the others deal with it because they
have their own duties and your dog’s duties are not one of
them.
Living on an estate, it’s important to keep first and foremost
in mind the owners needs and wishes as well as operations of the
property. Yes it is breathtakingly beautiful, but it’s
important to be the eyes and ears of the grounds. Don’t ever
ignore sounds from breaker boxes, especially the pool pump, or
power outages as things will always need to be reset. We had a
wild winter storm on Christmas Day, 2020, the only day the
property had no staff. I jumped into the pool to save the
bromeliads, fish out broken ceramic pots, and move other special
plants to safety.
Last month my dog, Knuckles, noticed a shadow by my bedroom
window. It was a half day and I was about to leave to go hiking
when at my window was a shirtless man with a tattooed arm.
Knuckles bolted outside and I was on his heels when I came face
to face with a trespasser. Being ocean front has its drawbacks
and this would be one of them. The trespasser was startled by
Knuckles and myself and headed to climb over the wall. He
wasn’t having any luck and I kept asking him his reason for
being on the property, while photographing him the entire time. I
was able to deescalate the situation without any harm to myself
or Knuckles and escorted him off the property. I later learned
from the police his name and occupation as a neighborhood thief.
Luckily thus far he has no history of violence, although he does
steal to feed his methamphetamine habit so that could change in
the future. Knuckles was a great hero of the day and the police
congratulated him when they met. I am now part of the
neighborhood watch association, and am very glad to have joined
this local group.
This type of lifestyle comes with benefits, like seeing whales
first thing in the morning or sitting in the beautifully lit
garden on a full moon night. But not being fully appreciated and
compensated for my worth is beginning to dampen my sunny outlook.
My living area has been deemed unlivable with black mold and
instead of taking care of it in a timely manner as I do with the
home and property, it has been sitting for close to half a year
and only now being addressed, and not with proper methods. I have
had to ask for better living conditions and been told how lucky I
am to even be on the property. Here is where it gets sticky. I
would say that yes I am a very lucky person but I work long and
hard for such luck.
With my extensive caretaking experience, I look forward to my
next caretaker opportunity, however a stipend will be necessary.
I bring positive energy and life into any situation and look
forward to the next chapter, whenever and wherever that may be.

AN ALTERNATIVE TO COSTLY MEDICAL INSURANCE
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both
property owners and caretakers/housesitters, have discussed their
healthcare situation and possible insurance options/alternatives
with us. My wife and I dropped our current medical insurance when
the premiums jumped to $2,000 per month with a $12,000 annual
deductible. We switched to a $354 per month healthcare program
for called Medi-Share.
I wanted to send you some information about Medi-Share as I
thought you might be interested in their affordable healthcare.
Like us, you and your family could join their community of
400,000+ who share in each other's medical burdens. Since 1993
more than $4 Billion in medical expenses have been shared and
discounted by Medi-Share members.
Always free and unlimited with Medi-Share:

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and
interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005,
was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse
ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a
cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. In 2005, the
handwriting on the wall began and the books closed on this
historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then, became my
pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true happenings
during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the open range
while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into usable
cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later in the
other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among wild
cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin’ out in Arizona’s
beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although
unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever
dreamed of being a cowboy, here’s your chance to ride along
with me as your side-kick and saddle pard. You can view an
entertaining intro with many colored pictures at lastdkcowboy.com
or write lastdkslashcowboy@gmail.com
