LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Gary, The Caretaker Gazette got very quick results for us.
Our new ad for a caretaker that ran in the Gazette got us many
applicants so far. More than we've ever had from other sources.
All the applicants who responded appear to be good candidates for
our position. We're so glad we heard about the Gazette and
advertised for a caretaker with you. Thanks for a job well done!
Jim M., Los Angeles, CA

Hi Jim, thanks for your message. I'm happy to hear that your
caretaker wanted ad that ran in the Gazette received a great
response from qualified applicants for your caretaker position.
With a pool of good candidates to choose from, it sounds like
your property will be in very good hands.

Gary, please let me know why you have stopped sending email
updates. I used to get them every week. Thanks, Beth K. Albany,
NY

Hi Beth, thanks for writing. This email message is being sent
to you from a different Server than the Server we use to send you
our email broadcasts. We have emailed updates to your outlook.com
email address every week since you subscribed. Have you checked
your Spam Folder for them? You can log into your account anytime,
and you can see the latest email update that we emailed to your
outlook.com email address right on your Welcome Back page after
you log in. Some of our outlook.com subscribers have complained
to us that for some unknown reason outlook.com has started to
block our email broadcasts that we send to their outlook.com
email address every week from a different Server than this one.
So some of our outlook.com subscribers have switched their email
address with us to something other than outlook.com

Hello Gary, last year you published my ad in your paper, and I
got a great response. I had two women from mainland America come
here, who saw my ad in the Gazette. The last woman left just a
month ago. I think later this year will be a good time for me to
host more people again. September or October would be a good time
to run my ad and begin to make connections. Please place my
updated ad in your Gazette this coming fall, and let me know the
ad cost. Thank you, Kathy J., Kapaau, HI

Kathy, I'm glad to hear that your ad in the Gazette worked so
well for you last year. We’ve heard from many of our
subscribers who are anxious to travel again this year. We look
forward to receiving your updated ad and running it later this
year.

Hello Gary! I just want to thank you so much for this great
service. All the people who have contacted me in response to my
Situations Wanted ad in the Gazette sounded terrific. I ended up
accepting a long-term housesitting position in Texas! Just what
I've been hoping for, getting to a warmer southwestern climate.
So far so good! Marie W., El Paso, TX

Hi Marie, congratulations on the positive response to your ad
and for finding a housesitting position! Texas should be much
warmer than northern Michigan! Please keep in touch and let us
know how things are going. Maybe we'll feature you in a Caretaker
Profile in a future issue of the Gazette.

Just want to congratulate you on a First Rate service! After
receiving our first issue, we emailed our resume to one of your
advertisers. We were very pleased to hear back from our potential
employer within 24 hours with a caretaker job offer. And with a
nice package, including wages close to $45,000 a year. We highly
recommend The Caretaker Gazette to anyone looking to fill/find
the perfect position/employee! Thanks again Gary! Best regards,
Buck B. Susanville, CA

Buck, that was quick and easy. You must have an impressive
resume! Most folks need to respond to a number of our advertisers
before they receive offers like yours. Let us know how it works
out.

PROPERTY CARETAKER PROFILE

Roy Fox: Historic Museum Caretaker
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Date of Birth: 6/23/39
Interests: history, radio, reading and writing
Quote: “This is my way of life!” - Roy Fox

Roy Fox in his King Manor office

Situated in the middle of eleven beautiful acres in the center
of Jamaica, Queens, New York, a few short blocks from the Long
Island Railroad, stands the 18th century home of Rufus King
(1755-1827). For over thirty years, the home and grounds have
been lovingly cared for by Roy Fox, known as Fox, the live-in
caretaker and resident historian of the King Manor House. Rufus
King, one of the original framers and signers of the United
States Constitution, was an early abolitionist and an outspoken
opponent of slavery. Fox explains that although the oldest part
of the home dates to the mid-1700’s, King purchased the home
and ninety acres in 1805. According to Fox, Rufus King made
numerous improvements to the home and property, including
planting a row of 13 stately oak trees, one tree for each of the
thirteen original colonies. Fox points out several of the
magnificent oaks that survive to this day, providing shade and
adding beauty to the home, just as they did over 200 years ago.
How does one find such an interesting and unique caretaking
position? In Fox’s case, it was a combination of serendipity
and necessity. After a successful career as a popular radio host
in Chicago, Detroit, and Pittsburgh, Fox and his then-wife, Mary,
relocated to the New York City area when Mary accepted a position
involving the restoration of the amusement park carousel in
Prospect Park, located in Brooklyn, New York. Fox’s wife came
east first and began work in Prospect Park. When Fox left Detroit
to join Mary in Brooklyn, the pair needed to find a home. Fox
soon learned from his wife’s boss (the Head of Prospect Park),
that a recently restored historic home was in need of a
caretaker.
Fox’s interest was piqued and he quickly scheduled an
interview with the Park’s Commissioner for the newly formed
caretaker position for the recently restored King Manor House. In
1989 Fox was made an offer he couldn’t refuse: a rent-free
living opportunity in the historic landmark, King Manor. There
was no job description, either verbal or written, for the
position. As Fox recalls, the Park’s Commissioner told him:
“The job’s yours and take good care of the place.” That was
31 years ago, and Fox has been there ever since, becoming an
integral part of the King Manor Museum.
Fox recalls his first night in King Manor, with Mary. There was
a persistent knocking sound on the sloped ceiling above their
bed, in the master bedroom. According to Fox, Mary asked if Fox
knew the source of the knocking. Without missing a beat, Fox
said, “That’s Rufus King and he wants his house back without
us in it.” Fox keeps the spirit of Rufus King alive for
visitors, delighting them with tales of King and passionate
re-enactments of King’s anti-slavery speeches. In addition to
living rent-free as the caretaker of King Manor, all of Fox’s
utilities except for his phone are paid for. Outside of the
grounds are several local stores within walking distance where
Fox can buy what he needs as far as food and other provisions.
The previous caretakers of King Manor were a couple who lived in
the cottage adjacent to the main home. When the home was
restored, the cottage was made part of the museum. As caretaker,
Fox lives in a large apartment located on the top floor of the
three-story museum. The space, formerly the servants’ quarters
during the years when Rufus King and his family occupied the
home, was renovated for the property caretaker. Fox’s apartment
has a spacious kitchen and dining area, two bedrooms, a bathroom,
an office, and several smaller rooms. A massive potted tree,
floor to ceiling in height, nearly fills one of the smaller
rooms. Fox explains that he covers it in lights for the Christmas
season. In addition, behind a door, in a small hallway, one can
still see the original home’s window and exterior facade. A
large room functions as a storage area for some of the museum's
historic artifacts that are not currently on display.
Fox’s dedication to preserving and nurturing the legacy of
Rufus King has made him a knowledgeable and passionate caretaker
of the historic home. In addition, his nearly thirty-year
successful radio career has helped to make him a unique caretaker
who always has a wonderful story to share with King Manor
visitors, young and old. His nomadic life as a radio host took
Fox from a small radio station in Henderson, Kentucky to Indiana,
Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, New York,
Massachusetts, New Jersey and then to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
where Fox hosted “The Fox’s Den”, a successful,
long-running show on KDKA. Fox recalls that he was on air when he
first “met” his wife, Mary, a successful radio producer. As a
nod to their radio careers and their many fans, the two were
married on the air. With his emotive voice and steady stream of
anecdotes, Fox still sounds as if he would be as successful on
air today as he was thirty years ago.

King Manor Museum

Roy Fox in the dining room of King Manor

Fox is a voracious reader and the walls of his caretaker
apartment are lined with bookshelves. The shelves, which fill
each room and every hallway of the apartment, hold Fox’s
collection of 4,000 books. Fox proudly announces that his 4,000
book collection bests Rufus King’s 3,200 book collection. Fox
has no television, and is a true bibliophile and historian. Many
of his books are American and British histories. According to
Fox, he knows where each book in his massive collection is
located and he can find a volume without consulting an index. Fox
loves histories and biographies and takes time to “talk” to
his books as he reads, circling passages and writing responses to
particularly interesting paragraphs. Fox says he is never bored
when there is any downtime at King Manor. A black and white
rescue, Super Cat, is the resident cat and Fox’s constant
companion. Super Cat knows her way around King Manor and will
make her way down to the first floor on occasion, surprising and
greeting guests.
Fox delights in showing arriving visitors to King Manor a metal
exterior fence that surrounds the manor grounds and property and
was installed during restoration. Written in steel and spanning
the length of the fence is, as Fox describes it, “the greatest
preamble to a constitution ever written.” Walking the length of
the fence, Fox reads the inscription: “WE, the PEOPLE of the
UNITED STATES, in order to form a more perfect union, establish
justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common
defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of
liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish
this Constitution for the United States of America.”
During a tour of King Manor, Fox shows off the formal dining
room, built by Rufus King in 1810. The room features several
original Federalist era design elements, including a curved wall
at one end of the room, elegant crown molding, and an imposing
carved fireplace mantel. Fox assists in hosting the live music
concerts that are held at King Manor Museum. Depending upon the
time of year and the weather, the concerts are either held on the
porch of the home or inside, in the formal dining room in front
of the curved wall which serves as a stage setting. During Rufus
King’s years there, the home was the site of many concerts and,
to this day, the acoustics are excellent. According to Fox,
classical, jazz, and historic music ensembles have all performed
at King Manor. The historic home is also host to festivals,
workshops, family programs, and community events. Fox, of course,
is on hand to assist, sharing interesting anecdotes.
Preparing for and helping to host the naturalization ceremony
for new United States citizens that is held each September on the
grounds of King Manor is another duty that Fox speaks of with
great pride. As he describes it, after the ceremony, Fox welcomes
all new citizens into the King Manor formal dining room. There,
the new citizens are invited to sign their names on a large
replica of the United States Constitution under the names of the
original founding fathers and signers of the Constitution,
including Rufus King, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton.
Fox recalls that it is a tremendously moving ceremony and a very
proud moment for the new citizens.
In the manor’s library, a life-size statue of Rufus King is
seated at King’s original desk. The desk, which dates to 1796,
predates 44 states and was restored in 2019, in time for the
museum’s 120th anniversary in 2020. In addition to King’s
original desk, there are also four floor-to-ceiling bookcases
designed by King and built into the surrounding walls of the
library. The bookcases, which originally contained over 5,000
inches of shelf space, were custom-made to hold King’s
extensive collection of books. Each bookcase has two floor-level
drawers where King could store maps and other important papers.
The bookcases have glass front doors with curtains to protect
King’s book collection from sunlight and dust. King also added
locks so he could secure his books at night.
As many property caretakers know firsthand, historic homes
dating to the 1700’s and 1800’s require near constant
maintenance and upkeep. For larger tasks, Fox will speak with
Kelsey Brow, the Executive Director of King Manor. According to
Fox, Kelsey shares his passion for King Manor and nurturing and
keeping alive the legacy of Rufus King. Fox explains that Kelsey
has been able to secure funding for larger maintenance,
restoration, and repair projects for the museum. In the case of
smaller items, Fox contacts vendors and learns from repair people
what needs to be done and how to do it. The next time issues
arise, Fox is able to apply what he learned and do many of the
tasks himself.
Fox has spent over three decades enhancing Rufus King’s legacy
through guided tours of the 29-room 22,000 square foot mansion.
Fox is actively involved in educational and community programs as
well as dramatic readings of King’s work. A passion for
history, a love of people, a dedication to lifelong learning, and
a commitment to keeping alive Rufus King’s legacy, all combine
to make Roy Fox an excellent caretaker and steward of the King
Manor Museum.

NORTH CAROLINA

LIVE-IN CARETAKER/HOUSEKEEPER NEEDED in Wake Forest. I own and
operate a small, upscale Inn set on a very nice, privately owned
property (over an acre in the heart of downtown Wake Forest). One
aspect of this position will be to clean guest suites when they
become available. Generally only longer-term stays for adults
only, and we clean after check out, or once monthly for longer
stays. Due to Covid, I am only operating two suites and both are
booked out for extended stays, through September so that's once a
month per suite. When things open back up at the end of the
summer I will also be bringing on a dedicated cleaning person to
assist. There is a long-term live in caretaker position for my
Aunt, a very sweet, easy going 80+ year old. Everyone likes her!
She is suffering from the onset of dementia with fairly regular
incontinence, mostly urination. So, you must be comfortable with
bathing and changing. She has an electric chair, a Jazzy 614 HD,
which is quite capable of going to downtown Wake Forest (a couple
blocks) to visit and eat at restaurants and browse stores. The
Wake Forest senior center is now open again and we are hoping she
will enjoy spending time there as well. She is a very sweet and
social woman. Now that we are through Covid, I am also bringing
on additional help to assist the primary caretaker with time off.
Her place is single story handicap accessible with a huge covered
front porch, great for sitting out in the warmer months. I also
have my parents who live across the street, in a 1940's bungalow
we completely renovated and customized for them. They're
80-year-olds, and still independent and easy going. My father is
soon to go in for shoulder surgery where he will need significant
help with daily tasks, food prep and such, and driving an Audi
convertible, automatic. So, we will be bringing on additional
help then as well. He will still do the cooking most likely but
that's his thing. Once his shoulder is healed then the other
shoulder is to be done, so overall recovery is going to be quite
some time. Both places are totally handicap accessible with ramps
and properly equipped bathrooms. It’s good to bring my Aunt
across the street for visits with her brother and sister-in-law.
She can ride in her chair from door-to-door. The daily routine
will be preparing meals, ordering groceries for delivery, looking
after her, keeping her place clean, making sure she is clean and
getting her outside. A room cleaning here and there........she
also has a small dog, 6 lbs. A Yorkie poo. If you don't like dogs
please do not respond to this ad. I also have two dogs, very
friendly, one is a pup at about a year and half old...the other
old and mellow, you will come in contact with them from time to
time. A boxer and a bulldog and both friendly. This is a
long-term position (years and years). Must be a caring,
preferably some experience in caregiving, whether family or
professional, but not necessary, as well as efficient and
experienced at cleaning. Everything is hardwoods and tile.
Overall, if this is your thing this is a great job especially for
the homebody type, very non-corporate. Most of the time it’s a
laid back environment here, if you’re good at your job it would
be almost all the time laid back. It’s a very good opportunity
for the right people. If interested please email
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX and include your work related experience.
Compensation will be $475 weekly, plus all food and lodging. I
hope to hear from you and why you think this would be a good
position for you.

and updates. I have also roughly 15 years of caring for a local
doctor/friends home and property. I have 35 plus years
manufacturing experience 20 of which were in supervision ... the

Hello Community, Are you traveling soon? Looking for your perfect
house/fur babysitter? Well, look no farther. Choosing me = Peace
of Mind! My name is Pamela Kelly. I am a mature professional
woman who has been a Spiritual based therapist for over 30 years.
I bring 20+ years of experience in house and pet sitting. I owned
my own home and shared my life with three generations of
four-legged children for 25 years. I will love your fur babies
like my own, keep your home clean and tidy and provide a reliable
presence in your home to ensure security. I am on-site day and
night as I work from home remotely on my laptop and cell phone.
As a bonus, your pets and I get to spend lots of time together! I
am quiet and respectful. I have very good credit, do not smoke or
drink, nor take sits in a smoking home. I am happy to answer any
questions you may have. In the past, I have always done house and
pet sitting as a favor or in an exchange with neighbors, friends,
family, and personal referrals. Now I find myself dusting it off
and offering it as the perfect solution for both of us. About Me:
I love music and the sounds of Jazz usually fill the house. I am
an avid reader and have not owned a television in over 15 years.
I have been in animal rescue and advocacy for over 35 years. I am
a plant-based vegan and love to cook. I lost my living space and
all my belongings in the Wildfires and flooding in Northern
California twice in three years. I have been renting sublets and
longer-term Airbnb's. I am starting a new practice and am looking
for a safe, quiet, comfortable place to unpack, catch my breath
and regroup. All my files and computer were destroyed taking with
them my references and pet photos. I was able to locate a few
folks for personal and rental references as well as finding a few
photos on my phone of the fur babies I had the joy of sharing my
life with for a few months. Both will be provided upon request.
You: Love your home/pets and want only the best fit in a sitter
to look after them while you are away. Freeing you to enjoy your
travels without any worry or concern for the safety of your home,
property belongings, or pets. Chores: I will take in your mail,
packages and forward them if necessary. Water plants and outside
gardens, feed, walk/hike, groom, play, and love on your fur
babies, Keep your home spotless (I once owned a house cleaning
and professional organizing business) trash, recycling, and
compost. I am open to other customized chores you may need to
have done while you are away. While my car was destroyed I have a
clean, valid, California driver's license. If there is access to
a vehicle. I would be happy to run errands as needed. Personally
covering gas, oil, and fluids. Thank you for taking the time to
read my post. If you feel I would be a good fit for your home and
needs please reach out to me at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Thank you
for sharing this post with someone you may know that is looking
for a sitter at this time. I am presently in Berkeley, California
in the East Bay and would like to stay in California. Though for
the perfect sit I am willing to travel/relocate.

quiet location. A functional camper, RV, houseboat, converted
garage, or treehouse works OK for me. 55 years’ experience in
TS defense facilities, and have local-state-federal clearances.
Not a boozer or doper, no visitors, but I do smoke - outdoors OK.
Former homeowner with experience as a landlord so am mindful of
your property. Need someone to keep an eye on that timberland?
Ride fence on the north 40? I will contribute whatever chores
I’m able to and don’t expect a discount. I pay my own way,

AN ALTERNATIVE TO COSTLY MEDICAL INSURANCE
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both
property owners and caretakers/housesitters, have discussed their
healthcare situation and possible insurance options/alternatives
with us. My wife and I dropped our current medical insurance when
the premiums jumped to $2,000 per month with a $12,000 annual
deductible. We switched to a $354 per month healthcare program
for called Medi-Share.
I wanted to send you some information about Medi-Share as I
thought you might be interested in their affordable healthcare.
Like us, you and your family could join their community of
400,000+ who share in each other's medical burdens. Since 1993
more than $4 Billion in medical expenses have been shared and
discounted by Medi-Share members.

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and
interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005,
was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse
ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a
cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. During the start
of the year 2005, the handwriting on the wall began and the books
closed on this historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then,
became my pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true
happenings during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the
open range while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into
usable cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later
in the other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among
wild cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin’ out in Arizona’s
beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although
unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever
dreamed of being a cowboy, here’s your chance to ride along
with me as your side-kick and saddle pard. You can view an
entertaining introduction with many colored pictures at
lastdkcowboy.com or you can write to me at
