LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Gary: Could I put a note in the Gazette warning people about
smokers. We had a caretaker who disobeyed our non-smoking policy
and smoked in his bedroom. My parents are old and were too afraid
of conflict to put their foot down about it, so they put up with
the smell of smoke for the several months he was with them. It
took us a month of scrubbing the walls and carpet to get the
smell of cigarette smoke out of the room, and we had to throw the
mattress away because it was beyond repair, it stank so bad of
smoke. Star D., Troy, NY

Dear Star, thanks for writing. I wish you could have
interceded on your parents’ behalf and had a strong talk with
this caretaker. We also recommend putting all such policies in
writing.

Hi Gary, with the coronavirus spreading around the world right
now, I'm not sure if I should renew my subscription and start
contacting some of your property owners advertising for
caretakers. What do you think? Sally H., Detroit, MI

Hi Sally, thanks for writing. We continue to receive ads daily
from property owners who are looking for property caretakers and
housesitters for their homes and properties. In nearly every
situation, private housing is provided for the property caretaker
or housesitter and, in most cases, the property owner is not even
on the property at the same time. We’ve heard many positive
things from our subscribers who've continued to take these
positions, including how living rent-free on a property can
relieve economic and social stress and offer a nice change as
they are busy on the property and, in some cases, with the pets
or animals they care for.

Gary, I would like to renew my subscription for another two
years. Through my help-wanted ad for caretakers that ran in your
recent Gazette email broadcast, I received a great response from
impressive, high quality applicants. Over the years I have found
excellent caretakers and made some wonderful friends through your
Gazette. Thank you for your great service! Janet L., Atlanta, GA

Janet, thank you for renewing your subscription for another
two years. I am glad to hear that the Gazette has helped you find
great people to caretake your property. Please keep in touch and
let us know how things work out for you.

Dear Gazette folks, we have already received several offers from
our Situations-Wanted ad that we ran in your Gazette. While none
of them are exactly what we're looking for at this time, it's
good to know that our ad has been effective in connecting us with
property owners. We look forward to seeing what comes our way
through the Gazette in the future. Sam and Amy T., Stamford, CT

Sam and Amy, thanks to some favorable media coverage of the
Gazette, we have more property owners subscribing to the Gazette
than ever before. In addition to running their ads in the
Gazette, many of these property owners opt to use our Situations
Wanted ads to find qualified people to care for their
properties.

Wow! What an amazing response we've received to our ad that ran
in the Gazette! I never dreamed that we would have had so many
quality people applying for the position. We've finally narrowed
our choice down to a gentleman who seems perfect for our
property. The choice was hard because of the incredible number of
fine people who responded to us. We will certainly mention your
publication to others who are looking for a good resource for
hiring property caretakers. Thank you! Don and Kay Y., Raleigh,
NC

Don and Kay, glad to hear that you have had a positive
response to your Gazette ad. We have many qualified caretakers
who subscribe to the Gazette so I am sure that you had some great
people to choose from. Success stories like yours are a major
reason why we have been in business since 1983 and keep growing
each year.

CROATIA

HELP NEEDED at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, located in Grabovac
Dreznickom/Rakovica between Plitvice Lakes National Park, the old
town of Dreznik and Barac’s caves on the edge of the pristine
nature. I run a small ranch and riding center. I currently have
seven horses, five dogs, five cats and some ducks and geese for
now. I have built a small house on the land which has been in my
family for generations and started the ranch five years ago. The
surrounding countryside is perfect for horse riding with lots of
off road trails and there will be plenty of opportunity for you
to ride. I am looking for experienced riders, ideally over 25, to
help on the ranch with the care of the horses, feeding, cleaning
stables, grooming and also taking tourists on trail rides.
Sometimes on the trail rides you may also have to lead the horses
if children are riding. You need to be easy going and kind as you
will be working with tourists and animals. Volunteers need to be
able to speak English and it would be great if you also speak
German or Dutch as we have a lot of tourists from there, but it
is not absolutely necessary. During the winter (requires a
minimum stay of two weeks) there are less tourists so the help I
would need would mostly be with feeding and exercising the
horses. I also sometimes train horses so if you could help with
this or would like to learn more than that is possible. Also help
with cooking, chopping wood, building projects, etc. would be
great during the winter months. Summer - I am looking for longer
term volunteers who are confident and experienced riders who can
stay for a minimum of one month and help me with the trail rides
as we get very busy. Ideally once you get to know me and the
horses you would be able to lead some of the trail rides alone. A
small financial compensation is also be available if conditions
allow for it. Working hours during weeks with paying customers
might exceed five hours per day. I eat a diet of meat, fish and
fresh local vegetables. Sometimes we cook outside over the fire

volunteers at one time. Volunteers will have their own bedroom in
the house. You can also use the kitchen, bathroom and living
room. I have a TV but no Wi-Fi although a phone signal is OK out

JAPAN

HELP NEEDED. I've traveled around the world for nine years and
been to 92 countries so far. I came back to Japan in 2018 and
started a backpacker's hostel and English class for Japanese
locals in my house. The house is surrounded by mountains
(including Michelin 3 star Mt Takao), with many small rivers,
beautiful hot springs and the Sagami lake. The river right next
to my house is so beautiful! And you can swim in there in the
summer. I am an hour away from Japan's biggest downtown,
Shinjuku. I need your help to maintain the hostel and teach
English to my Japanese students. You don't have to be from a
native English speaking country. More importantly, you have to
have patience to speak slowly and clearly. Hours expected to work
depend on the day. When it’s busy, we usually work from around
10am to 3pm, preparing the room for coming guests. The work
involves cleaning the rooms, and keeping the house clean. If you
have any suggestions or ideas for my hostel, they are most
welcome. And in the evening, we have free conversation in the
English Class for 40 to 80 minutes. When it's not busy, you just
need to maintain the house for a few hours. You have one day off
each week. I was a professional boxer before, so I conduct a free
boxing training program in the morning if you’re interested.
You can join anytime you want! I can cover your housing and food
cost. We basically cook together (I'm not good chef though...
sorry...). If you’re in the area, please call
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX so we can meet up. Thanks.

PROPERTY CARETAKER PROFILE

Ranch Caretaking - Do You Have What It Takes?
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Interests: Renee: Everything! Soap making, riding her horse,
hiking anywhere anytime, cooking, reading a historical novel,
sewing, writing stories about her adventures, eating, drawing,
painting, travel and seeing new sights with Marty
Marty: Riding horses, training horses, talking about horses,
going to horse events, eating Renee’s cooking especially her
cinnamon rolls, watching reruns of Maverick and Rawhide, travel
and seeing new sights with Renee.
Quotes: “You only live once. Make the most of it.” – A.
Nonnie Maus

Renee and Marty

People ask us from time to time how we met. That’s easy. The
answer is: we met online on an equestrian related dating site. We
both had been in long-term marriages that had ended, our kids
were grown and we felt “Hey, now’s the time that we should do
what we want. Time’s a-wasting”! I, Renee, had been working
in the corporate world. I was feeling suffocated by the urban
area I was forced to live in and wondering how I could make
things better for myself. Maybe try to get back to the life I had
growing up on the Great Plains of Iowa. Marty just wanted a
partner who was nice, a hard worker like him and loved horses and
travel. It was a perfect match. Ten years in we’re still going
strong.
Our first job was the perfect setting and the perfect employers.
“The Ranch” was remote and beautiful. It was a thousand acres
of open space with wildlife and blue skies. Off in the near
distance were the eastern slopes of the Mendocino National
Forest. It was incredibly hot and windy in the summers but that
was all right. We just got up early in the morning while it was
still cool to take advantage of the cool hours and get our work
done. In the afternoon we could head over to the reservoir and
pretend it was our own private lake because no one else was
there.
Waking up each morning to physical chores taking care of
animals, making repairs and doing maintenance did not seem like a
job even though we took it very seriously. When work was done
Renee used her spare time to start a successful blog and get
writing assignments from national magazines. Marty got a Border
Collie pup and started training him on sheep in preparation for
cattle work. We really went in for the Homestead Existence,
growing our own food, making our own food and taking care of our
animals. The owners really appreciated getting homemade goat
cheese and sourdough bread. It makes it sounds like we didn’t
have time for ranch work but that would not be true. When you
work efficiently and use your time wisely there’s time for
everything.
We enjoyed when the owners came to The Ranch on weekends and
everybody got together for big meals around the Cantina dining
table. Sometimes we’d all go to the river bluffs and do
shooting practice, swim in the river, or just talk around the
outdoor fire pit and pizza oven with a glass of wine in hand. Our
working relationship was perfect. Our employers would give us a
task, we’d discuss how best to accomplish the task and then
they let us just do it. Since Marty and I are perfectionists our
employers were always more than pleased with the results. It was
good to accomplish real life things where we could step back and
admire the results.
Marty has been on horseback since he was a kid in Bakersfield,
California. He learned his skills at the knee of one of the
Marlboro Men, Ben Bates, and a locally renowned breeder and
trainer, RC Donaldson. From there he went on to cowboying near
Eaglesville in Northern California and Newcastle, Wyoming. In
Buttonwillow, California he worked cattle horseback in the
feedlots. But life on ranches isn’t all horseback! As a matter
of fact, very little of ranch life is horseback. So, along the
way he learned how to drive tractors and excavators, dump trucks
and backhoes, skip loaders and bulldozers as well as make
electrical, plumbing and carpentry repairs. While employed at
Riverside Horse Park in Bakersfield he fed 200 horses a day.
Eventually he attended the Police Academy and worked as a police
officer for 12 years. He had a stint as a Park Ranger and owned
his own car repair business. He’s proficient at electrical and
plumbing, irrigation and carpentry. He loves to travel and see
new sights with his partner Renee, play the stock market for a
little spending cash and watch old re-runs of Maverick and
Rawhide.
I, Renee, was born in Chicago but raised in Iowa: My family are
multi-generation Midwestern farmers but my mom and dad broke the
mold by becoming professional artists. I, myself, followed suit
and earned a fine arts degree. I learned gardening from my dad
and cooking from my mother. To make a living I spent years in the
corporate world where I learned project management and solid
computer skills. I now write for magazines and have a successful
online blog. My work can be seen in Grit, Mother Earth Living and
Capper’s Farmer.

A Short Vacation Near the Grand Canyon

Relaxing Near the Pacific Ocean

I write articles about country crafts, farmhouse recipes and
domestic arts. In my personal blog I write about humorous
observations of life on the ranch and farm and whatever strikes
my fancy. I make my own soap, sew clothing, build wood crafts,
candles and homemade cosmetics. In the last four years I've been
a full-time real estate agent.
Both Marty and I feel most at home in the country. We love being
self-sufficient and doing for ourselves. Our previous employer
Isabel Moore says this about us: “They are wonderful
caretakers. I could rely on them 100% and we never worried about
our animals and property while they were with us. We were
terribly sorry to see them go. They’re self-starters and
don’t need daily direction. You give them a task, consult about
what the desired outcome is and then let them get to work. I
can’t recommend them highly enough.”
When we found our perfect caretaking job it wasn’t a slam
dunk. Most of you caretakers will agree with us on this. It took
a few months of looking at job descriptions and doing online
research. When we first set out to be caretakers, we subscribed
to a couple online caretaker sites. Of course, The Caretaker
Gazette was one of those sites. It seemed to be the biggest and
the best with the most variety. After a while we found some
possibilities and so we went on a couple interviews but the jobs
didn’t turn out. They weren’t what they advertised so we just
hunkered down and expected, just like any job interview, that we
would be looking at jobs that ultimately were not going to work
out.
Looking for a job is like baseball. You step up to the plate and
the pitch is thrown. Will it be a hit, walk or out? Sometimes
it’s a foul. You never know what the pitch will be, but you
keep stepping up to the plate and eventually you will get a hit.
We wanted a position where the people would respect us and value
what we brought to the table which was considerable talent and
experience. It was The Caretaker Gazette where we finally found
our perfect job. I remember reading and thinking this sounds
really good. We got an interview and drove to the Ranch while
keeping our excitement under control because we had been down
that road before only to be disappointed. This time as we drove
through the gate, we started to let our excitement out a little
bit. The location was outstanding. The look and the feel of the
place was charming and human level. Still under control, however,
we sat and talked with the owners well into the afternoon. The
place may be great, but will you get along with the owners?
It was a group of people who interviewed us. It was the owners
and the couple who leased the land for grazing their cattle. We
sat at the big table under the big trees in front of the ranch
house. Then we walked the property and toured the house where we
would eventually live. We even got in the old Mutt Jeep and drove
around the property bouncing in and out of gullies and down to
the big creek. We thought if nothing else we will have had a
grand tour of a place that the general public never gets to see.
They talked about the bears and wild pigs that lived in the
property. We were really liking the first impression of the
owners. They weren’t stuffy and uppity. They were down to earth
and easy to talk to. When we sat down to talk the husband came in
from dragging the arena and he was covered with dust. We loved
that they weren’t averse to rolling up their sleeves and doing
work themselves.
It seemed like a perfect match. We drove away all excited now.
Next, we waited, and it was a couple days when we got the call
and they wanted us to start the process of coming on board.
First, we had to pass a background check which we knew we could
easily pass. It took a couple weeks but finally the word came,
and we had the job! We were there for four years and the time
flew by quickly as it always does when you’re having a good
time.
Occasionally, the owners would come, and they’d have some
project they wanted to consult with us on. We developed a family
garden for the owners while we were there. We improved the
irrigation ditch that went from the small creek to the large
lake. We worked on the lake spillway to improve it. A lot of the
work we did was on water issues. The well pumps and check valves
we either fixed ourselves or got expert repairmen to work on
them. We mended fences. We cleared brush. We built a giant
chicken coop and run. We repaired windows and hired a chimney guy
to put a custom spark arrestor on the chimney. We moved the
cattle herd from pasture to pasture and kept an eye on them to
make sure the babies and moms were healthy. If need be, we
doctored the ones who got sick. We dealt with horses that
colicked and made sure they were shod properly and wormed. We
built pens for new animals and repaired the tin on the barn roof
when a big windstorm came in and blew the tin off. This is only a
small smattering of things we did. As any experienced caretaker
knows the projects on a property for maintenance and repair are
ongoing and constant.
I hope this gives you a better idea of what ranch caretaking can
be like and what skills can help you get a good job. Our dream
came true and so can yours. My parting words are: team up with
the folks at The Caretaker Gazette and don’t miss a single
issue.

PORTUGAL

JOIN A SMALL NATURAL FAMILY FARM in the mountains in Portugal! We
are a young couple with some experience on
self-sufficient-living. In 2015 we got a piece of land in a small
growing community of close friends in a beautiful valley at the
highest mountains inside the biggest natural park of our country.
We need help on creating a natural farm to support our small
eco-community! Rita is a health-food enthusiast and loves to work
with different kinds of art-craft. She likes to explore with
medicinal plants, fermented foods, and ways of preserving food.
She appreciates doing basketry, wool-work and book-binding. She
also likes to produce cleaning and hygiene products like natural
detergents, soaps and salves. Walking in nature, singing with
friends, and doing yoga are some of the other things she enjoys.
Goncalo is a nature lover with a passion for permaculture and
natural farming. He studied organic agronomy and has been
practicing it since 2008, with the help of volunteers, interns
and apprentices. He enjoys sharing and to make music with
friends. Until now, we built two yurts for living, a greenhouse
dome (toilet and nursery), recovered a ruin for storage and
workshop, and built a stable for the farm animals, a round-house
with reciprocal roof for shelter and a small kitchen. We have the
help of a horse, goat, sheep and chickens to regenerate pasture
where we plant trees and shrubs in order to convert it to a
poly-crop system. This year we will need help maintaining the
vegetable garden; implementing and maintaining food forests;
building simple structures with round wood and recycled
materials; harvesting herbs, vegetables, fruits and processing
them; farming maintenance (cutting and caring fire-wood; moving
electric fences and farm animal summer shades, cleaning the
stable), enjoying live, sharing wisdom and much more. During
Spring and Autumn, we need help us for a maximum of five
hours/day, according to our goals. You will have a shelter with
wood burner and a camping area, hot-shower, dry-toilet and a
small kitchen that you can use for cooking (usually we have lunch
all together). We provide the same healthy ingredients we use for
cooking our own food. During the Summer we only need help for a
maximum of three hours/day therefore we only provide
accommodation (shelter or camping tent) and facilities (kitchen,
dry toilet and solar shower) so you buy your own food (we sell
olive oil, fermented and dried vegetables, nuts, herbs,
vegetables and eggs). There's also a natural pool in the stream
and according to the season, mushrooms, edible and aromatic
plants, berries, acorns and chestnuts. In north Portugal we have
a strong culture of family agriculture that is still practiced by
beautiful old people and some young new amazing neighbors. You
will meet some of those and can get to visit them to chill-out or
help on farming maintenance in exchange for services, products or
money and learn some knowledge or skills with joy! If you are in
Portugal, please call us on XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

SWEDEN

HEJ HEJ! This is Mats Grankulla (45, living in North Sweden,
Kiruna, with my wife and kids). We are building a village along
the river with some wood cabins and need help to finish them and
run the camp. I and my family live close by and I am regularly
visiting the camp. But the camp is run by other workers for me
and my business partner Juhani. A few years ago I bought this
land in Kurravaara, which is located 90 minutes from Abisko, and
two hours to Narvik on the border with Norway, in the forest
along the river. It’s a fantastic location, very quiet and
green and perfect to watch out for aurora or midnight sun. The
location is 10 minutes by car or bus to Kiruna. The nature here
is just amazing, the river, the forest, the midnight sun, and the
fauna. The surrounding forests are great for hiking and wandering
around for photography or watching wildlife. The views are just
stunning and Kungsleden or the King´s trail is not too far away.
We are a very easy going, international team, friendly and open
to new cultures, and we'd love to host people from all around the
globe. Now we need some help for driving guest transfers to/from
town (so a driving license is a must). We need a hand to decorate
the cabins with recycled materials, so all your creativity is
very welcome, such as sanding and painting furniture and walls.
We need some help in cleaning the cabins/SkyNests after guests
check in and out, and serving and preparing dinner and breakfast.
As our three SkyNests are on top of a hill, also transporting
guests on snowmobile is a task if you think you can do it. Again,
a driving license is a must. General cleaning around the site,
and chopping wood and preparing the sauna for guests, etc. We are
looking forward to have preferably people with the following
profile: open minded people who love to work in hospitality (men
and women), good spoken English is necessary, and patience is
needed at the camp as there is always something unexpected
happening. You'll work no more than eight hours per day with two
days off a week so you have plenty of time to roam around. And we
can organize your working hours the best they suit you. It is
possible to go away a couple of days and come back. We'll provide
for food and accommodation in a single/shared cabin. You can cook
for yourself. There is also a car for guest transfers and
errands, but not for travelling, but we can take you to the
train/bus station anytime. You can join our tours for free, hike
around, use the sauna or hot tub (to be finished, that’s also a
job) watch the Fauna (moose, reindeers, birds, foxes, and wild
rabbits). You'll have two days off, to visit all the parks around
(Abisko, Jukkasjarvi (where the Ice hotel is located) the Sami
Camp (feed the reindeers and experience their life and culture),
Nikkaluokta, etc. We'll teach you how to fish, start a fire, and
cook food and coffee on an open fire and lot of things about
wilderness. So if you think this will suit you and you are
willing to commit to at least three weeks, you are welcome to
apply by calling XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. So maybe see you soon
later this summer.

AN ALTERNATIVE TO COSTLY MEDICAL INSURANCE
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both
property owners and caretakers/housesitters, have discussed their
healthcare situation and possible insurance options/alternatives
with us. We have dropped our current medical insurance when the
premiums jumped to $2,000 per month with a $12,000 annual
deductible. We switched to $354/month healthcare program for my
wife and I called Medi-Share.
I wanted to send you some information about Medi-Share as I
thought you might be interested in their affordable healthcare.
Like us, you and your family could join their community of
400,000+ who share in each other's medical burdens. Since 1993
more than $4 Billion in medical expenses have been shared and
discounted by Medi-Share members.
With Medi-Share you and your family won't need to worry about the
mandate to purchase health insurance or pay costly penalties and
fees, members are exempt through a special provision in the
Affordable Care Act.
If you would like to learn more, please visit
http://bit.ly/2M2LtUO or please call Myles Lilley who is a Member
Development Specialist at Christian Care Ministry at 800-772-5623
extension 2224.
I hope this helps!

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and
interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005,
was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse
ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a
cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. During the start
of the year 2005, the handwriting on the wall began and the books
closed on this historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then,
became my pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true
happenings during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the
open range while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into
usable cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later
in the other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among
wild cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin’ out in Arizona’s
beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although
unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever
dreamed of being a cowboy, here’s your chance to ride along
with me as your side-kick and saddle pard. You can view an
entertaining introduction with many colored pictures at
lastdkcowboy.com or you can write to me at

HOUSESITTER NEEDED for the month of December to look after four dogs, four cats, three goldfish, and our garden. My home is in the Basking Ridge area. You will be responsible for feeding our animals, and watering the indoor plants, no exercise required for the pets. Our pets are very well-behaved, so you should have no problems with them. We would prefer a live-in housesitter but will also consider twice daily visits to our home for feeding/watering duties from any local applicants. Might need to shovel the front walk if it gets icy or snows. Please email why you would be interested in housesitting and taking care of our pets and provide at least three checkable references. Please email xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
