LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Happy New Year! Wondered if you can check again about why I no
longer receive email updates? The last time I did was in
September. They are not listed as blocked. I have been
periodically checking the Gazette’s Twitter account and am
wishing I could get these updates and details in to my Inbox
again. I have been a subscriber for two decades! Thanks, Anna R.,
Kalispell, MT

Hi Anna, thanks for writing. We have emailed updates to your
email address every week since you renewed your subscription.
Have you checked your Spam or Junk Folder for them? You can log
into your account at www.caretaker.org anytime, and you can see
the latest email update that we have emailed to your email
address right on your Welcome Back page after you log in.

Thank you! I found them! I guess my email provider must have
changed their filtering as your updates were never sent to Spam
before. Thanks so much! Anna

Thanks for the update Anna, and I’m glad you found all of
our email updates that we have sent to you. Keep in mind that we
send at least one email update each week, so if a week goes by
and you don’t notice any email updates from us in your Inbox,
please check your Spam or Junk Folder for them. Thanks.

Hi Gary, I’m a subscriber and would like to find out how I can
submit a caretaker profile story for publication. I always enjoy
reading the profiles in each issue and think it would be a good
thing to show prospective employers. Thanks to you and your team
for everything you do there. Judy L., New York, NY

Hi Judy, you can submit a first-person story, including tips
and advice, about your caretaking or housesitting experience.
Please refer to some recent profiles for additional information.
If you are living rent-free as a caretaker or housesitter and
have a story to share about your experiences (nothing like a
resume) – please email it to us along with photos so you can be
featured in a free caretaker profile story in a future issue of
the Gazette:

Caretaker Profile:
Need story title
Your email address
Your interests
Favorite quote
And about 1,800 words for your story
Along with four photos: a close-up photo of you and then photos
of you on the property you are caretaking

You can then email the above information to us at
CaretakerGazette@gmail.com

Thanks Gary for running my Situations Wanted ad! I found a nice
housesitting position for the winter months! Larry K., Fargo, ND

Hi Larry, good to hear! Thanks and all the best to you.
Enjoy!

Hey Gary, thanks again for the incredible service you and your
family have provided over many years via the Caretaker’s
Gazette. As a subscriber for over 20 years now and one that has
thoroughly enjoyed my INCREDIBLE caretaking position here in
southwest Oregon for going on 21 years... your small part in my
life has had one of the largest beneficial aspects of my life -
Hands Down! Thanks again, and HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you and yours!
John H., O Brien, OR

John, thanks for keeping in touch. Glad to see that you’re
on the same caretaker gig all these years. We still have many
subscribers, like yourself, who found their caretaker positions
via the Gazette in the 1980’s or 1990’s, and are still on the
same property. Many of them have told us that they never want to
leave!

AUSTRALIA

HOUSESITTER/CARETAKER position available. We are located in the
picturesque Chapman Valley, Western Australia on 120 acres. We
are close to Geraldton, medical, shops and fishing spots! We are
self-employed and our work takes us away periodically and we
would love someone to care for our property, being two houses,
windmill tank, an active kelpie dog, and sheep (no sheep handling
is required, just check the waters). There would be some hand
watering, mowing/maintaining of lawns on modern equipment,
minimal basic garden/house maintenance when required. Ideally,
you would be self-sufficient and would have full access to power,
water and unlimited internet in exchange for help in the above.
An indoor washing machine, shower and toilet can be made
available. A pet is OK as we have an active kelpie. A minimum of
approximately two to three weeks would be ideal, longer by
agreement. Police clearance/references is an advantage. We can
provide references from our previous caretakers. If you’re in
the area, please contact XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, and if no answer
please text. Thanks.

LOOKING FOR A TRAVELLING COUPLE in their own RV to drop by for a
week or two to lend a hand in and around the home and garden in
the Geraldton area. Access to power, outside loo and lots of
space. We are located on the south side of Geraldton, a coastal
city in the mid-west region of Western Australia. Please call
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR HELPERS with their own RV at our 100 acres in
southwest Western Australia, midway between Busselton and
Margaret River. We run an eco-retreat here, so any experience in
spas/pools and tourism would be an awesome help. We are planning
a short week break in February so we’ll need some caretakers
then. Open to anytime from now as we are so busy with our
chalets. Would prefer that you have an independent power supply
with your rig, but will consider if you do need power as we have
done this before. There are plenty of nice camping sites on the
100 acres. Help is needed with gardens, orchard, fencing upkeep,
weeding, chickens, and feeding friendly kangaroos. To learn more
and to contact us, please visit our website at
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

FARM CARETAKER REQUIRED in Cambooya, 25 kilometers south of

HELP WANTED. Hi, my name is Ian, and my wife Kylyn and I need
help looking after a large bush block (16 acres) we own in
Katoomba, NSW in the amazing ‘World Heritage’ listed upper
Blue Mountains with access to world class lookouts and bush walks
accessible just minutes’ drive away. If you have your own RV
and are into climbing, canyoning, trekking, lookouts, trail
running, cafes, restaurants or walking along amazing National
Park trails, then you will love visiting our area. We are looking
for some willing helpers to free camp out on our block in
exchange for some bush regeneration work and targeted weeding of
identified noxious weeds that the local council have identified.
Other jobs might include, lawn mowing and wiper-snipping. It will
be like camping in a National Park Campground with just a toilet
facility (composting). You will need to be self-sufficient with
sourcing water, showering and managing your rubbish. The
preferred length of stay is one to three months (maximum of four
people and tow rigs at any one time). The trade would be free
camping in exchange for one hour/person/day. This would be
flexible so could be spread out over each day of the week or
condensed onto one large day. However, when possible I would like
to come up and do a block of time working with you, like a three
or four hour block on a Saturday morning for example. This way, I
can show you what weeds we are targeting, etc. No experience is
required, however, it is reasonably physically work. So mobility
through the bush is necessary. If you are interested in more
details, please contact Ian, and Kylyn on XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

FINLAND

SUMMER HELP NEEDED. I would like to host a helper at my summer
cottage. Would like to have some help with my garden, and with
fire wood. For a helper we could agree to about four hours work,
five days a week. You could stay a few days or few weeks. I have
simple food, and I don't eat meat, but you can. My cottage is
very primitive, no running water, outside toilet, and have solar
panels for electricity. I do have a sauna. And Wi-Fi! There is a
small guest cottage where a helper could stay, if I don’t have
paying quests. It has a fire place for heating. If I have quests,
the helper can sleep in my kitchen cottage, or in my cottage. All
cottages are very small! I have an apartment in Espoo (with
electricity and running water), located 20 kilometers from the
center of Helsinki. The helper can stay there partly. My cottage
is by the lake and I have a canoe and a bicycle. I don’t have a
proper beach but there is a possibility for swimming nearby. A
train or a bus to Helsinki takes less than an hour, but they
don’t run very often. The railway station is six kilometers
from my cottage. No smoking inside. I have two rabbits, so this
would not be good for allergic people. I only can host volunteer
help when I am at home. If you’re in the area, please call

ANIMAL SANCTUARY CARETAKER NEEDED on the Big Island. We are a
farm animal sanctuary located on a 13 acre property on the
beautiful Hamakua coast in Laupahoehoe, on the Big Island. We are
offering full work trade accommodations (no rent/no pay) for the
right property caretaker/sanctuary manager. After a two week
trial we hope to secure a one year commitment, with the potential
for this to be a long-term arrangement for the right person to
join our team and home indefinitely. This is our private property
so we work here every day too, and we have wonderful volunteers
(usually travelers from around the world) who stay onsite for
extended periods and help with the daily animal care and many
chores. But we have grown to the point where we could really use
the consistency and skilled support of a long-term property
caretaker/manager. We are currently building additional
accommodations on the property, and would love help to finish
these out to ensure everyone has comfortable living spaces.
Immediately we could offer a space in the shared volunteer yurt
(bunk-house), a private tent, or we could discuss possible
alternatives and will do our best to offer a desirable living
space for the right candidate. We are looking for someone who
loves animals, is experienced managing landscaping and
construction projects/fence maintenance, and is comfortable
taking a lead role to ensure everything runs well day-to-day.
There is plenty of space to create edible gardens and we have a
fruit tree planting project in the works, and have land to work
with for other creative ideas and additional living spaces (as
well as storage and a special needs animal barn to be built). We
do not allow any smoking, drugs, or excessive drinking, and no
animal products onsite out of respect for our rescued dairy cows,
pigs, chickens, goats, etc. To apply, please email your resume to

Marcel and Aleta relaxing on the party deck

I remember that morning so well. It was November 2019. We had
been home for about two weeks, after our last five-month
housesitting assignment in Southwest France, and a month touring
Northern Spain, Portugal, France and finally visiting family in
England. Back home in the USA, with plans for Panama, and Italy
the following year, we sat drinking our morning coffee and
reading emails and news. The Caretaker Gazette landed in the
inbox and we clicked it open. As we read about Olepangi Farm in
Kenya, we knew we had to apply for it:
KENYA
OLEPANGI FARM. In the foothills of Mount Kenya, East Africa sits
a little piece of paradise: an award-winning safari lodge
bordering millions of acres of wild space; a haven for elephants,
giraffe, zebra and all the wildlife of Kenya. Olepangi Farm is
looking for a mature couple, cheerful, fun, competent, handy,
practical and well-travelled to help host and manage guests from
around the world and assist with farm management for a three to
six month placement. Lovely accommodation and fabulous food
included. The farm at 6,800 feet elevation, experiences some of
the best year-round weather in the world and is close to many of
the best game reserves in Kenya. Please contact us at …
What an opportunity; several months in the foothills of Mount
Kenya, hosting guests at a lodge on a horse farm, taking care of
the dogs when the owner was out of town, and generally making
sure the guests were having a good time – we could do that!
There were no set dates, but we were flexible with the Panama
trip, but not so much with the Italy assignment that we had
committed to. Nevertheless we needed to apply and find out more.
I immediately answered the advertisement, careful to address
everything they had asked for, and telling them a little about
ourselves. I sent a short concise bio, and within 24 hours we had
a response and an invitation for a Skype call. We set up the call
for a few days ahead and received a link to the farm website and
made our list of questions for the owner. As it happened, they
required someone as soon as possible – December! We had already
booked Christmas with our daughters and granddaughters in
California, and after being away for six months or more, we felt
we could not cancel at this late stage. Undeterred, we went ahead
with the Skype call and found out that they needed someone for
three-month assignments for the next couple of years, until they
retired. As we had plans for the next nine months, they were
happy for us to reserve our slot in advance and we decided we
could do six months, December 2020 – May 2021. The interview
process went very smoothly, we had our list of questions ready
and the owner answered our queries. We had a short video tour of
the gardens, and a brief description of our duties. Lodging and
food was included, all we needed to do was book our airline
tickets. We had an agreement! We were going to Africa! First
Note: if you see something you are very interested in, respond as
quickly as possible. There are many opportunities out there but
there are also many applicants. You won’t know everything about
the position, but unless you apply you won’t be able to ask the
many questions you need to ask, before taking the position.
And so, we enjoyed our Christmas in California, where we were
also lucky enough to pick up a house sit and stay an extra three
weeks close to our daughter. Being retired, and having no
commitments meant that we were very flexible with our time and
could take any opportunity that came along. We arrived back in
Florida in January 2020 and started to prepare for our month-long
trip to Panama and our three month assignment in Italy during the
summer, taking care of a vacation villa, and finally Kenya in
December! We were excited! Then COVID-19 hit like a punch in the
gut, and all our plans were blasted up into the air. Lockdowns
started to kick in throughout the world and Panama closed its
airport. That trip would have to wait for another time. We were
still hopeful for Italy, but by the end of May, it was obvious
this pandemic was not going away any time soon. The guests who
had booked vacations for Italy, and who we would be assisting,
all cancelled. We were disappointed but were asked to postpone
until 2021; hopefully this will still happen. Second Note: If you
are looking for a rent-free lifestyle, you need to be flexible
and adaptable. Things change, events happen, on both sides. Be
understanding, don’t make it stressful; accept that it is out
of your control and move on to the next option.

Olepangi Farm Cottages and Garden

Marcel and Aleta ready to work, Olepangi Farm Gardens

What about Africa? We were keeping our eyes on the African news
and staying in touch with the owner via email. It was a ‘wait
and see’ summer; we were becoming very bored and frustrated,
with thoughts of ‘we should have been in Italy now’. So we
hopped in the car, filled it with food, masks, sanitizer and
Clorox wipes and enjoyed a five-week road trip out to California
and back to Florida, via the five National Parks in Utah and The
Rockies in Colorado. We don’t sit still well! In August, Kenya
opened up its international airport, welcoming visitors once
again, obviously with restrictions. We were encouraged and spoke
to the owner again. She had bookings for December and January and
still needed us there, so we immediately booked our flights,
applied for visas and started to gather clothing and equipment.
As the days drew closer to our departure date, each one was
filled with a little anxiety, as the COVID-19 pandemic was still
rampant worldwide, but we were determined to do whatever it took
to get to Olepangi Farm, Kenya, masked up, sanitized and ready
for adventure!
And then the day arrived and with quarantines, lockdowns and
COVID tests all behind us we boarded the plane to Nairobi. This
would be our first time in Kenya and we really didn’t know what
to expect. We found the security at the airport and hotel to be
tighter than expected, but the people were full of smiles and
very friendly. Our stay overnight at the airport hotel overlooked
Nairobi National Park and we had our first sighting of zebras,
giraffes and impala, while eating breakfast on the terrace.
We were looking forward to our four hour journey to Olepangi Farm
and our driver, Wilfred, arrived on time. We headed out through
the Nairobi suburbs and drank in the hustle and bustle of Kenyan
daily life. There were roadside stands selling all kinds of
fruit, timber, rice, plants and even beds and iron gates. Sofas
and mattresses for sale were set upon the red dusty earth and we
even saw a three-seater sofa being transported on a moped!
Everyone was busy, buying and selling, bargaining and walking
with their purchases along the dusty track alongside the road.
Herders grazed their cows on the grass verge, alongside children
playing with sticks and string, laughing and running without a
care. It seemed everything was made from scratch; the iron beds
and gates, bricks for the buildings and wooden tables and chairs,
and all outside on the dusty verge alongside the main road from
Nairobi to Nanyuki, which was the largest town close to Olepangi
Farm.
The scenery became more lush and green as we headed towards
Mount Kenya. We peered out the car windows to see our first
glimpse of her, but the clouds were heavy and hanging low, so we
would have to wait. We stopped for a break and bought a couple of
locally crafted items. The local communities had been hit hard
through lack of tourism this year, so we paid a little more than
usual for a couple of hand painted dishes and a small basket.
I’m sure they would come in useful.
After four hours of driving along a two-way road, where everyone
was edging into the middle to overtake, we saw Mount Kenya,
rising high, her twin peaks shining in the afternoon sun. We
vowed to do some hiking on this beautiful mountain during our
stay. As we continued to head north, we passed through rural
communities where humps in the middle of the road forced the
driver to slow down. As he slowed, young people and children
approached the van, trying to sell their wares. We were anxious
to get to our destination so did not stop to buy anything
further, but would certainly visit the local towns, once we had
settled in.
We finally made our turn-off to Olepangi Farm. The dirt track was
deeply rutted and after a twenty-minute, very bouncy ride we
arrived at the gate. We were welcomed by smiling faces, warm
greetings, hot towels and freshly squeezed passion fruit juice.
The sun was shining, there were elephants on the ridge across
from the pool house and we sighed in relief. We were here; in
Kenya eager to settle in and begin another adventure.
We have been here a few months now! How time flies! We have
settled into our safari tent, and have a few creature comforts; a
comfortable bed, sofa and two chairs, coffee table and hot water!
No electricity in the tent, but we are outside most of the time,
or in the communal areas where we can take advantage of charging
phones and computers. We have seen some amazing wildlife, right
outside our tent!
We have been busy with guests, coming and going over the
Christmas season. The days are long, starting at 7:00am,
supervising staff for breakfast set up, liaising with the guests
to ensure their days are planned well, checking in new guests and
saying goodbye to those leaving. We then entertain in the
evenings with sundowners and finally dinner. We fall into bed at
the end of the day, exhausted but feeling very blessed to be
meeting such amazing people from all walks of life, and we are
frequently treated to sights of zebras and giraffes on the hill
opposite our tent. Watching the young elephants chase each other
and the matriarchs trumpeting their warnings, is a sight we will
cherish. Once the lodge is quiet we are planning a safari in
Samburu, a trip to Nairobi and the Masai Mara, a visit to Ol
Pejeta to see the last two remaining Northern White Rhinos and a
hike on Mount Kenya. We weren’t sure we would make it but
…..here we are!

WANT TO HELP BUILD A COMMUNITY? LOVE THE SEA? After finishing the
building of our boat and our first sea-trial trip, we are
presently based on an organic apple farm 40 minutes south of
Oslo, where we are focusing on beekeeping as we intend to build
up on honey production and queen-breeding this summer. We are a
community-based project born over 10 years ago. Involving people
from all over the globe, we hope to eventually form a community
present both on land and at sea, that will cooperate with
eco-villages, sharing the bliss of sustainable living and
traveling through organic farming and sailing —connecting
places and people across the oceans. If you have any knowledge or
interest in permaculture, self-sufficiency, alternative living,
etc., don't hesitate to contact us and share your ideas. Our
hopes are for the farm to flourish into a place where food,

Hello, my name is John. I am seeking a position as ranch
caretaker or large estate caretaker or manager. I have over
thirty years of experience in this field. My experience varies
from large homes and estates, to large ranches. Most of the homes
I have managed and have taken care of, are from top executives
and business owners in the United States. I believe in
confidentiality, trustworthiness, honesty, diligence, and
consistency. These are traits I have learned at an early age in
my career. And I have carried out these practices throughout my
career. I have had a background in security, private homes, and
ranches. I can set up your formal parties, take care of the
largest of homes and estates. I believe in preventive
maintenance, and do not like putting things off, before they
become a larger expensive problem. I have strong attention to
detail, and double and triple check everything! I go the extra
mile to protect my homeowner’s investments, which they have
worked and labored for to attain. I can flood irrigate the
largest of ranches, do snow plowing, driving equipment, and
maintain fence lines. Guiding hunters, calling in elk, and
throwing on a tuxedo to serve your guests wine and cheese. I
truly enjoy interaction with people, whoever they might be. Being
on site to oversee vendors and contractors. Following through and
paying attention to the biggest of projects, to smaller projects.
Being the ranch or estate owners’ eyes and ears while they are
absent. Being out in the middle of nowhere does not hinder or
bother me, being remote is fine. I am self-motivated and driven
daily to give 100% of my ability to my clients. I enjoy projects,
and enjoy the challenges of keeping things neat and clean. Or
cleaning up neglected areas. I am currently in the Rocky
Mountains of Colorado, in a big ski resort area, surrounded by
large ranches and estates. I am fine with relocating. If the
situation is desirable and long-term, and the owners are vested
into maintaining their property. I am college educated. I put
myself through high school, and trade school (welding) then four
years of college with a degree in criminal justice. I have never
used any tobacco products, at all. Legal or illegal. I am not
addicted to any tobacco products or alcohol. I enjoy exercising,
hiking, hunting and eating healthy. I also help out at our church
every Sunday. I believe in community investment and giving back.
I do not like wasting my time or client’s hard earned money and
investments. I work exceptionally well with anyone I am dealing
with. But I am also just fine by myself with projects and daily
security. Trust is very important to me - without it, you cannot
have a relationship. If you have pets, and need to leave the
country or state, I am great with any kind petsitting. Horses to
dogs or cats. Knowing me, I will most likely fall in love with
them. At this time I would like to thank you for reading this.
Health and happiness to you. Sincerely John. Please call me at

AN ALTERNATIVE TO COSTLY MEDICAL INSURANCE
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both
property owners and caretakers/housesitters, have discussed their
healthcare situation and possible insurance options/alternatives
with us. My wife and I dropped our current medical insurance when
the premiums jumped to $2,000 per month with a $12,000 annual
deductible. We switched to a $354 per month healthcare program
for called Medi-Share.
I wanted to send you some information about Medi-Share as I
thought you might be interested in their affordable healthcare.
Like us, you and your family could join their community of
400,000+ who share in each other's medical burdens. Since 1993
more than $4 Billion in medical expenses have been shared and
discounted by Medi-Share members.

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and
interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005,
was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse
ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a
cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. During the start
of the year 2005, the handwriting on the wall began and the books
closed on this historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then,
became my pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true
happenings during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the
open range while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into
usable cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later
in the other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among
wild cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin’ out in Arizona’s
beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although
unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever
dreamed of being a cowboy, here’s your chance to ride along
with me as your side-kick and saddle pard. You can view an
entertaining introduction with many colored pictures at
