ALBANIA

HELP WANTED. We are a chilled out hostel on the beautiful
Albanian coastline looking for volunteers for the summer. The
property is in the center of Himara, right on the beach with a
rooftop terrace where you can relax and enjoy the best sea views.
We need friendly volunteers to help with reception, cleaning
rooms, making beds, preparing a simple breakfast in the morning,
organizing hostel dinners, and socializing with guests. Also a
bonus if you are artistic! We love for people to leave their own
mark on the hostel, so if you can add to the artwork on the walls
or you have ideas to improve our decor, which would be great.
Volunteers will get a bed in a shared dorm, free breakfast, and
occasionally other meals, access to Wi-Fi, washing machine, tea
and coffee. Food is cheap here in Albania and there is a fresh
fruit and vegetable market, and a supermarket just around the
corner from us. Hours of work may vary depending on how many
volunteers we have or how many guests are in the hostel. But
always we will make sure you have plenty of time to relax and
enjoy yourself! There are lots of beautiful beaches in the area
to explore including the famous Gjipe beach. Himara also has nice
bars and seafood restaurants for you to enjoy. If you’re in the
area, please call XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX for more information.

exactly as you pictured it: hundreds of square miles of
impossible beauty and bounty; a seemingly endless expanse of

people skills required. "Can do" attitude a must. Ability to
organize/prioritize and complete projects required. Vehicle

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

After returning from a much needed and long overdue vacation to
the Virgin Islands, I realized that Boston was just too harsh of
a climate to consider growing old in. I was working as a Pilates
instructor, and while I loved it, I was never going to save
enough to retire or get out of the renter’s market. My husband
was getting up at 5am every day in all seasons to catch a bus and
a train to work in a corporate kitchen so we could have health
benefits. Compared to five billion people in the world, we were
lucky. We had plenty of friends, food and warmth, but we were
living in an expensive city just working to pay the rent, not
enjoying life to the fullest. I knew there had to be something
more for us out there where we could still work hard, but in a
friendlier, less stress inducing atmosphere.
A friend told me about The Caretaker Gazette and I signed on and
began my search. I had several ideas in mind, but the most
important: the job needed to take us both, have a salary and
benefits and a rent-free apartment. And it had to be somewhere
warmer than Boston! I had worked high end housekeeping, food
service and floral arranging aboard motor yachts and my husband
is a culinary school trained chef. It took eight months for me to
find the perfect job that ticked all the boxes for both me and my
husband.
We answered and advert in The Caretaker Gazette that was listed
by an agency/head hunter. I kept it brief: a paragraph for each
of us and pictures of my husband’s cooking and a few of us just
having fun. The agency responded right away and asked for
resumes. We had several phone and Skype interviews with the
partners of the agency before we ever met or spoke with the
owners of the property. After an initial Skype interview with our
current employers, they flew us to California to meet
face-to-face and to check out the town. Overjoyed is the best
word to describe our feelings at the time.
We had a few months before the position started, so we began to
sell all of our furniture, say our farewells and plan our
adventure. We had to buy a car to get us across the country and
away we went. We took three weeks exploring the southwest before
we arrived on the West Coast.
Our new caretaking position took us to Ojai, California, nestled
in a valley about twenty-five minutes from one of the most
beautiful coastlines in the world. While the housekeeping and
cooking came naturally enough, we were about to be introduced to
pump rooms, irrigation systems, pool and spa maintenance, wine
making, gardeners, contractors, light carpentry and plumbing and
firefighting! (We always hire an electrician…wiring is not a
hobby.) It has been an amazing experience for us both.
Our rent-free cottage is nestled in a citrus grove-oranges,
lemons, limes, Ojai Pixies - with fig, avocado and loquat trees
in the mix. I was able to get beehives and chickens - both
long-time dreams of mine. My husband is gardening with gusto and
is currently taking back an acre of unused land for additional
food growing. There was a defunct greenhouse on the property that
I have turned into an orchid oasis. We are in paradise.
We work a not-so-traditional forty-hour work week with two days
off per week. We take full advantage of them by cruising up and
down the California coast. San Diego, LA, Venice Beach, Santa
Monica, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Palm Springs. The list goes on
and on and we keep adding destinations to it, always finding time
to explore a new beach and do a little snorkeling or napping.
We love the location, the town, the town’s people and our
employers. We have been here for two and a half years now. And,
while we plan on staying here until we retire, I still renew my
subscription to The Caretaker Gazette every year. Not only do I
want to support Gary and all the wonderful work he is doing, but
I find the ads inspiring and I like to see the jobs available to
retirees.
Thanks so much, Gary, for this wonderful publication and good
luck to anyone signing on! It takes time to find the right fit,
but it is well worth the effort.
Cheers, Monica and Fred, Ojai, California

WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOME HANDYMAN TYPE HELP in return for
accommodation as we live on five acres in Perth’s northern
suburbs and have quite a few odd jobs which require someone handy
and experienced in home maintenance and repairs, gardening and
preferably with some knowledge of reticulation (although this is
not essential). We are a friendly family of four, with two
children aged 10 and 12 years. We have horses and a beautiful
property, but we both work so there a quite a few odd jobs which
require attention and we struggle to find time to get it all
done. We are 35 minutes from the city and 15 minutes from the
beach, located on five acres and surrounded by semi-rural
properties and market gardens including quite a few strawberry
farms. We have a large resort style pool available for use by the
successful applicant(s), and fully furnished one bedroom granny
flat available to utilize, with plenty of parking space for a
caravan to be parked and set up alongside it. We are keen for
someone to start straight away, and happy for as long a term stay
as suits for the right person(s). Interested parties should
contact XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

ON-SITE CARETAKERS NEEDED at the XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX in
Batchelor, Northern Territory. We are looking for a couple who
have their own accommodation i.e. a caravan/motor home, and who
would be interested in volunteering as “On-Site Caretakers”
at the Batchelor Museum this year, 2020. The season is from April
1 to the end of September/October, depending on the weather. This
is not a paid position. Your van site, power and water are free
for you in the grounds of the Museum. There is also a bathroom,
fridge and small washing machine available. Batchelor is at the
gateway to the beautiful “Litchfield National Park” and is a
very historic little town of approximately 400 people, 50/50
Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal. Batchelor is only 100kms from
Darwin. There is a wonderful community spirit in the town and
always lots of fun activities going on. Lawn bowls, a swimming
pool, general store, beautiful Batchelor Oval with a cricket
pitch, many parks, monthly markets, monthly Quiz Nights, Op-shop,
Anglican and Seventh Day Adventist Churches, Butterfly Farm and
Rum Jungle Tavern with karaoke weekly are some of the activities
you could become involved in during your stay at the Museum. The
more you give, the more you receive in Batchelor. You won’t
want to leave! We are interested in a neat and friendly couple
who are active and enjoy meeting and talking with people, most of
whom are travelers such as you. There is a small shop/cafe in the
entry building, selling Museum souvenirs, gift lines from local
artists, ice creams, drinks etc. There would be remuneration
given in appreciation for the running of the cafe. The main
requirements are keeping the three buildings of the museum clean,
opening and closing, and greeting visitors each day. Also,
maintaining the museum grounds and driveways. Details of these
activities will be forwarded upon application, with a run-sheet
of a typical day. This is an easy and rewarding position for two
people to share the day’s activities. The Museum is open seven
days a week during the season and on request thereafter. Open
hours are from 10am to 4pm. You would be required to be here five
days per week, then two days off. This is flexible to suit
different requirements. We are all volunteers, and as such, try
to be flexible. We have a small yet dedicated group of Committee
members and friends of the Museum who look after it on a regular
basis to allow our valued caretakers to enjoy their time off. A
keen interest in Australian history, in particular WWII would be
great but not necessary. This is an opportunity to learn more
about the Top End and the front line of our Australian WWII
history; also the Rum Jungle Uranium Mine and the township of
Batchelor in the 1950’s, 60’s, and 70’s. The Museum is
fascinating and, whilst it has only been open since 2012, has
been given great reviews and is on the “to do” list for the
Northern Territory. It is constantly evolving, with new exhibits
and information being added on a regular basis. If you are
interested in keeping the history alive and would like more
information, please phone XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

two houses clean inside and out once a week, keep the grass mowed
with our ride on mower and very minimal garden work, such as
spraying weeds mainly, and put the irrigation system on three
times a week. Will also need to do general handyman duties around
the property. In total the work to be done around the property
would take roughly about 10 hours a week. There is extra paid
cleaning work on occasions if wanted. It’s a great place to
relax in all the spare time you will have, oceans, and surf
fishing, calm water fishing, salt water rock pools for swimming
close by, along with fresh water lakes and rainforests. If you
are looking for short-term caretaking this position isn’t for
you – we are looking for a long-term caretaker couple. There
are no animals allowed on Fraser Island. You must like living in

There will be plenty of time if you need to leave the island now
and then, and that is not a problem. Local applicants can feel
free to phone Andrew with any questions at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX,
as I prefer to talk on phone instead of emails. Thank you.

CROATIA

HELP NEEDED at Equestrian club Rakovica, located in Grabovac
Dreznickom/Rakovica between Plitvice Lakes National Park, the old
town of Dreznik and Barac’s caves on the edge of the pristine
nature. I run a small ranch and riding center. I currently have
seven horses, five dogs, five cats and some ducks and geese for
now. I have built a small house on the land which has been in my
family for generations and started the ranch five years ago. The
surrounding countryside is perfect for horse riding with lots of
off road trails and there will be plenty of opportunity for you
to ride. I am looking for experienced riders, ideally over 25, to
help on the ranch with the care of the horses, feeding, cleaning
stables, grooming and also taking tourists on trail rides.
Sometimes on the trail rides you may also have to lead the horses
if children are riding. You need to be easy going and kind as you
will be working with tourists and animals. Volunteers need to be
able to speak English and it would be great if you also speak
German or Dutch as we have a lot of tourists from there, but it
is not absolutely necessary. During the winter (requires a
minimum stay of two weeks) there are less tourists so the help I
would need would mostly be with feeding and exercising the
horses. I also sometimes train horses so if you could help with
this or would like to learn more than that is possible. Also help
with cooking, chopping wood, building projects, etc. would be
great during the winter months. Summer - I am looking for longer
term volunteers who are confident and experienced riders who can
stay for a minimum of one month and help me with the trail rides
as we get very busy. Ideally once you get to know me and the
horses you would be able to lead some of the trail rides alone. A
small financial compensation is also be available if conditions
allow for it. Working hours during weeks with paying customers
might exceed five hours per day. I eat a diet of meat, fish and
fresh local vegetables. Sometimes we cook outside over the fire
with neighbors, my family and ranch guests. I would like to share
cooking with volunteers and am happy to eat most things but
cannot really cater to very specific dietary needs as most of
what I eat is locally sourced. I can host a maximum of two
volunteers at one time. Volunteers will have their own bedroom in
the house. You can also use the kitchen, bathroom and living
room. I have a TV but no Wi-Fi although a phone signal is OK out
here so you can access the internet via phone data. If you are in
the area, please call XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

ICELAND

VOLUNTEER HELP NEEDED on the pathway to the Thrihnukagigur
volcano from June 4 to June 18. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Volunteers
will be working close to the main skiing area of the capital
region of Iceland, Blafjoll or the Blue Mountains. The aim of the
project is to protect the environment and avoid different trails
being created from increasing traffic of hikers and nature lovers
in the area. The main task will be maintaining a hiking path in
an area called Three Peaks Crater, which is a dormant volcano
that last erupted over 4,000 years ago. Other tasks may be to
mark and control areas where the visitors are not allowed to walk
in order to protect the surroundings of unnecessary passage and
harm. Sports associations who run some of the skiing lodges might
also need some maintenance, such as painting and/or cleaning in
the surrounding area. No previous experience is necessary but the
work is demanding and might require a good physical condition; it
can at times be repetitive but always rewarding. As it is
outdoors work, volunteers shall be ready to adapt and be flexible
with the working and free-time schedule, as depending on the
weather, we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or
activities planned. The working plan will depend on the needs of
our local host, the advance of the diverse projects in the area
and of course on the weather conditions. Bring warm under-layers,
waterproofs, walking shoes/boots, a good sleeping bag, hat,
scarves and gloves. The camp happens around the summer solstice,
when the sun hardly sets and the nights are almost as bright as
the days. The bright nights are magical and staying awake
enjoying the beautiful surroundings is a unique experience.
During the time of the camp participants will have the
opportunity to experience the midnight sun as there are 24 hours
of light even if the sun sets for shorts periods of time. SEEDS
volunteers will stay in one of the ski lodges in the mountains;
in a sleeping bag accommodation sharing rooms. Please bring your
own sleeping bag. Volunteers will receive food supplies and be in
charge of cooking and cleaning activities. For more information,

PROPERTY CARETAKER PROFILE

Reinventing Myself. A Profile of James Smith
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Interests: Swimming, scuba diving, water skiing, boating,
camping, and raising German Shepherds.
Quotes: “Reinventing Myself” by James Smith

James Smith standing in front of the farm house

My story begins with me being born and raised in Albany, New
York. A city I spent 40 years enjoying with a Christian
upbringing along with four sisters.
I started mowing lawns at the age of 15 and using snow blowers
in the winter by the time I graduated high school. I had saved
enough to go to a two-year college for horticulture. This was the
start of a long career in landscaping. Over the years, I owned
and ran businesses in pest control, wildlife control, and
handyman services.
Some of my interests include swimming, boating, waterskiing,
camping and raising German Shepherds. Back in 2000, I became
interested in The Caretaker Gazette. I’ve been a subscriber
ever since. I’ve worked for two other estates both in the State
of New York prior to working for my new posting in the State of
Illinois for the Goeken family on a 78-acre farm estate.
I just want to say that if you dream of an adventure, and you
can put your accomplishments to paper along with a decent resume,
then anyone can do what I did. It’s not that hard! Just believe
in yourself and don’t let other negative people sway you. Go
after your dreams and don’t be a quitter.
I now have the opportunities to use all my six service
backgrounds in one place. I can’t begin to say how happy I am
after over 30 years of searching to live on a country farm along
with friendly open people. I live now in a Midwestern community
that welcomes people who can offer peace and love and a good work
ethic.
We still help friends and neighbors. We don’t need their
money, but we do need their friendships. Life is bigger and
better and more satisfying. Bring your talents and bring your
Christian goodness. Life can be sweeter when you help others. It
uplifts you and makes you feel great. Just make your plan and
work your plan.
Don’t let the number of applications sway you to achieve your
place. You have to work at getting the place or adventure. Keep
writing and sending your resumes in to opportunities that you
read in the Gazette. Don’t be a quitter if you want to win your
place. I struggled for 30 years. I found my personal niche but
hadn’t found the place to come home to, but after my struggle,
I’ve found a home to love and be proud to become a part of. If
you want to inspire yourself, you need to empower yourself. Give
yourself the power to create and reinvent yourself!!!
The Caretaker Gazette allows me to move forward from one
adventure to another. Meeting people, places and forging a
lifetime of joyous memories. One day last year, I was going
through my email messages and read this ad in one of my Gazette
email updates, and even though the ad’s headline started out
with “Couple needed”, I emailed the advertiser and applied
for their position:

ILLINOIS

An aerial view of Maple Lane Farm

James Smith with his friend Gonzo

And interestingly landing here at Maple Lane Farm, I found out
they have used The Caretaker Gazette exclusively for 25 years for
all the help that has worked at the farm. At one time this farm
estate had 46 head of horses so they had to have a large staff
back then. They ran an Animal Ministry with exotic animals for a
number of years and now are getting more into Event Planning,
Concerts and Weddings so the type of people have changed over
time. The women are kind, loving, respectful people who look to
attract like-minded people who want the quality of life with no
drama. They let me do what I know needs to be done to keep the
place looking great. They have a computer program for System
Management that gives me all the info I need to find vendors and
suppliers which helps me be independent yet access all the
information needed.
The story of this magnificent place is quite a remarkable
one. The owner actually boarded two little ponies when she was a
young girl here at the farm. Many years later she showed her
first horse at an open horse show here. She dreamed of nothing
but growing up and getting a job one day cleaning stalls at this
beautiful piece of heaven. Then after decades of hard work and
global travel she was looking at farms for sale to consolidate
her own herd of boarded horses into her own facility when she
became lost.
The owner found herself on the Maple Lane Farm facility but never
recognized it as the same place that she always dreamed of. It
looked different to her as barns had been removed and many
changes were made on the property. She fell in love with it again
and went to the front door and asked the then current owner if he
would ever consider selling it. He had her removed from the
property as it was not going to ever be for sale. It never did
come on the market. She relentlessly pursued the place, coming by
most weekends and making a general pest of herself until after
several years the then owner called her saying he would sell her
the farm.
Thank your creator for being a human being rather than a
bug or some animal. I know I do. The panorama here on the farm
estate of the grounds, the trees, barns, fields and pastures are
compelling to a city boy with always a country heart. I now help
manage the estate along with a single mom and her three
incredibly smart, engaging daughters.
These young women are the successors to our generation. They are
the ones to succeed us. Ashley and Christen for their ability to
uplift the homeless and share their musical talents. Their
sister, Lauren, for her love and care for the farm animals, the
horses, donkeys, pigs and doggies.
The owner bred Arabian Horses at the time and had one in
particular that Wayne Newton, the singer, entertainer, and
Arabian horse breeder, had given her. She loved that horse more
than life and wanted him to have his own pasture and never have
to fight with other horses for his food. This horse went on to
become the most winning Arabian in history and their love affair
quite a beautiful story in itself. That’s why she wanted this
farm so badly, for that horse. He passed away at the age of 36
years but has a Museum of all of his trophies in his honor. She
had this horse cremated and is lovingly attending to a beautiful
wooden case of his ashes so that she can still be with him. They
are very sentimental people and take care of old animals that
most would not.
Their Animal Ministry hosts 250 children with special
needs each year for fishing in their two acre pond. They host Boy
Scouts, Vacation Bible Camps, Father-Son Camp Outs, Church
Services, Family Day Picnics for Public Safety Personnel,
Homeless Shelter Events, Unwed Mothers functions for their babies
and have done weddings and funerals for those in need as the
owner is a Minister with a huge heart to help others. The animals
were each dumped and unwanted by others or abused. She knit
together performances to the delight of thousands of children who
delighted in being entertained by trained zebras, camels, llamas,
zebus and countless other animals that no one else saw the value
in. Most have died off by now but everyone I have met tells me
stories of the countless events hosted out of love and compassion
by these people.
The farm is about a third in lawn to mow, a third in
wooded trails and the rest in pasture space. My days start early.
I first feed and water the horses and livestock then clean out a
few stalls. Then I may cut fallen trees for firewood or clear
trails. If it’s cold outside I can work inside the barns
organizing things, building shelves or go to the main house and
help out there. I don’t get much supervision as I am trusted to
do what needs to be done and use my own judgement to complete
it.
They won the Farm of The Year Award last year and have
the oldest Cottonwood Tree in Illinois on the property. Some have
said this tree must be 120 to 150 years old as twelve people
holding hands cannot reach around its massive base. With my love
of growing things, I will build the type of respect around it and
get it registered on Historic Land Sites when the weather gets a
little warmer. This amazing farm is 150 years old and the current
owners have had it for 25 years and the daughters hope to keep it
always in the family. Parts have been sold off over the last few
years but it is still magnificent and everything they advertised
in The Caretaker Gazette was true. It is a piece of Heaven on

AN ALTERNATIVE TO COSTLY MEDICAL INSURANCE
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both
property owners and caretakers/housesitters, have discussed their
healthcare situation and possible insurance options/alternatives
with us. We have dropped our current medical insurance when the
premiums jumped to $2,000 per month with a $12,000 annual
deductible. We switched to $354/month healthcare program for my
wife and I called Medi-Share.
I wanted to send you some information about Medi-Share as I
thought you might be interested in their affordable healthcare.
Like us, you and your family could join their community of
400,000+ who share in each other's medical burdens. Since 1993
more than $4 Billion in medical expenses have been shared and
discounted by Medi-Share members.
With Medi-Share you and your family won't need to worry about the
mandate to purchase health insurance or pay costly penalties and
fees, members are exempt through a special provision in the
Affordable Care Act.
If you would like to learn more, please visit
http://bit.ly/2M2LtUO or please call Myles Lilley who is a Member
Development Specialist at Christian Care Ministry at 800-772-5623

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and
interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005,
was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse
ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a
cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. During the start
of the year 2005, the handwriting on the wall began and the books
closed on this historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then,
became my pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true
happenings during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the
open range while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into
usable cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later
in the other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among
wild cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin’ out in Arizona’s
beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although
unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever
dreamed of being a cowboy, here’s your chance to ride along
with me as your side-kick and saddle pard. You can view an
entertaining introduction with many colored pictures at
lastdkcowboy.com or you can write to me at
