LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Gary, Thanks to you and The Caretaker Gazette I have the best
couple of my long ownership (30 years) of the farm. So the need
to seek or advertise is not there at the present time. I'll email
you again next time I need to find caretakers for my farm. I want
to wish you and your family a very happy holiday. M. Z. Hudson,
NY

Hi Marty, thanks for sharing the good news about finding
excellent caretakers for your farm through our publication. Many
of our subscribers who are property owners tell us that they have
found the best caretakers for their properties via their
advertisements in the Gazette. I hope you and your family had a
happy holiday season.

Thanks for running my help-wanted ad in your Gazette. I still get
about one response a month from my ad. One of them I engaged and
they've been here five months now. Others I've corresponded with.
Thanks for the great service you provide! B. F., Arroyo Hondo,
NM

That's great to hear, Bob. We're glad that your ad was successful
and one of our subscribers has been at your place for almost six
months now. Sounds like a good match for both of you. Please let
us know if you ever need future help for your property in Arroyo
Hondo, New Mexico.

Greetings Gary! Thanks for your reminders about my subscription.
When I first became aware of your publication and began
subscribing I was a middle manager at an insurance company call
center, "living?" each day in a cubicle among hundreds of other
cubicles. Having substantial practical skills, experience and an
interest in the caretaking lifestyle, I found The Caretaker
Gazette to be a captivating source of "escape" fantasies that
helped me survive through a mind-numbing season of my life. THANK
YOU FOR ALL THAT!! I am now happily and sustainably retired in
Asheville, living in a small "green" house on a small lot, a 10
minute walk from my wonderful daughter's home. No further need
for escape fantasies; my reality now feels like a dream come
true. So, while I'm no longer interested in subscribing, I did
want you to know how your good work helped me in ways unrelated
to getting a gig as a caretaker. Thank you, again! G. W.,
Asheville, NC

Thanks for the update Gerry! I wish you the best at your new
location and with your new life there in Asheville. Many of our
subscribers are retirees who have the time to travel and explore
life in a new locale - often as housesitters or caretakers - so
maybe you'll get the urge to travel somewhere down that long and
winding road.

Congrats! Hey, Gary, your newsletter found me two excellent
caretakers for my place in Baja, California. The one couple (and
their kids) just left after three years. I don't know if I want
another caretaker anytime soon but we'll see. FYI, I wrote about
Caretaker Gazette in my book. Maybe I can advertise with you. I
now run a B&B in Cambria. W.S., Cambria, CA

Hi Bill, good to hear from you again! Thanks for your nice
message and update. I appreciate your mentioning the Gazette in
your book. I'm glad you were able to find good, long-term
caretakers for your place in Baja via the Gazette. Best of luck
with your bed and breakfast in Cambria and please let me know if
you decide to run an ad with us again.

more programs and so there's work for anyone and people of all

COSTA RICA

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. Our finca is a 15 hectare mixed-use finca in
the low mountains on the western edge of the Central Plateau.
Most of the farm is habitat, with small areas of organic crops
... corn, beans, fruits, coffee ... and a main house with three
smaller rental houses. The smaller houses are usually rented to
potentially relocating singles and couples, couples planning to
have a baby near midwives and hospitals, and students at the
nearby University for Peace. We would appreciate help with
cleaning, maintenance, and repair of houses and outbuildings,
including a planned re-roofing of a small house, as well as
interior and exterior painting. Volunteers with knowledge of
roofing, flooring, or stonework would be most welcome. We do not
need yoga teachers, massage therapists, or healers. Vegetarians
might want to look elsewhere for a stay as well ... we raise
animals (usually chickens and pigs) for the table, and are
omnivores. I'm a serious cook and baker, so those bases (as they
say in the US) are covered, although we'd welcome some prep help
at times. Please, no smokers and no pets. Please contact
"XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact information for these ads is

CROATIA

YOU ARE WELCOME at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX ("Rich forest"), our
eco initiative in nature. We left city life in The Netherlands to
live on our organic homestead (15 hectares) on the top of a hill,
inland Croatia, with forests all around. As a volunteer we expect
you to be part of our family and daily routines, like cooking and
cleaning, taking care of the animals and the garden. We work with
Permaculture and the moon calendar to develop our garden, our
forest garden to be, terraces on a hill side and our living fence
(with berries and fruit trees). The approach to projects or tasks
is to have fun together and deliver quality work. In all we ask
ourselves everyday how we can do it in the best way possible.
Usually we start the day with weeding the vegetable garden (as a
slow start of the day) and after that, we work on something that
is high on our priority list. Besides that, we can work on other
(smaller) projects like pruning, composting, fencing the terrain,
cleaning terrain, planting (fruit) trees and shrubs, harvesting,
processing the harvest (drying in solar dryer, making
jam/syrup/wine/liqueur) and sometimes some light construction
work. The work that you will do, of course depends on the season
of your visit and on our list of priorities. It is a start-up
project and has all the aspects you can expect of something
starting. Construction work going on, materials lying all around,
messiness, jungle, many ideas ... and slowly we develop. Many
valuable mistakes brought us to our place as it is now. We trust
that the experimental atmosphere will be appreciated by you as it
has been by most of those before you. Please write us about
yourself (please don't make yourself look nicer than you are),
and we can send you our extended information. If
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX seems appealing to you, think twice if you
don't like children. Or don't want to get dirty hands. And please
don't come if your motivation is only cost reduction of
travelling. If we still fit in there, have a go! And don't forget
to take a bag of fun with you! We're looking for volunteers that
want to stay for at least four weeks. Please contact
"XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact information for these ads is
available only to Gazette subscribers."

others (human and other species) can simply live. Rick is a
physician and needs help so that he can finish writing a book and

fodder, garden/structure maintenance, and making dog food. We use

ICELAND

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX VOLUNTEERS needed in the Botanic Garden in
Reykjavík from May 25 through June 7, 2014. The Botanic
Garden is an outdoor collection of living plants, founded in 1961
and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011. The garden's main
role is to conserve plants for education, research and delight.
It conserves some 5,000 plant species in eight plant collections.
The collections give an idea of the enormous diversity of
vegetation in the northern temperate zone. In summer there is a
variety of events in the Botanic Garden and group receptions are
available throughout the year. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX volunteers
will be doing general garden work, attending the flowers, trees
and other plants. Volunteers will assist in organising and
carrying out special events that might be planned with a short
notice but they will all be related to the general aim and work
of the garden. The work may be repetitive as general gardening
tasks tend to be. The project starts early every week day,
working hours are from 8:00 - 15:30, so volunteers have to be
motivated to work early in the morning. You will stay in a well
equipped house, in a beautiful setting inside the Botanical
Gardens, which are located about four kilometres from the centre
of the city. Volunteers will be sleeping in shared rooms/dorms in
a sleeping bag accommodation. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
Volunteers will receive food supplies and be in charge of the
cooking and cleaning activities. Do not forget some
traditional/typical food from your home country for the
international evening. Visitors to Reykjavík experience
easily the pure energy at the heart of Iceland's capital city -
whether from the boiling thermal energy underground, the natural
green energy within the city and around it, or the lively culture
and fun-filled nightlife. In the summer, you can sit by the
harbour at midnight and watch the sun dip slightly below the
horizon before it makes its way up again. Volunteers have to
bring good working shoes and clothes, even though summer is
around the corner, it might still be cold and hats and gloves
might be necessary. To learn more, please visit our website at
"XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact information for these ads is
available only to Gazette subscribers."

experience in basics of small homestead self-sustainability; and
exploring anything you are interested in that we know, for 20
hours a week of you sharing your efforts of caring responsibility
for whatever needs doing. We have expectations of sharing our
life with someone who has a strong interest in the land and
animals, homesteading self-sustainability and all that entails,
interest in learning, has a good attitude and okay with farm work
(including shoveling manure and building fences), and applying
their best efforts. Dialogues on life, love, nature, the
Universe, and the pursuits of happiness a plus! References
please. Experience: let's talk about it. Requires strength enough
to dig holes, push filled wheelbarrows up hills, pound fence
posts, carry feedbags, move small hay bales, rototill; and
compassion enough to recognize that animals are people too.
Length of stay: negotiable, and dependent on mutual
compatibility. For more info, please write to

CARETAKER PROFILE
Ranch Caretaking - Do You Have What It Takes?
Marty Aubin is 62, and Renée-Lucie Benoit is 63
Interests: writing essays and short stories, pastel painting and
charcoal drawing, travel, cooking, gardening, horseback riding
Quote: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by
the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do." Mark
Twain

Marty and Renee

My partner Marty and I decided we needed to make a move out of
the city four years ago. We didn't want to make a rash decision
so we took some time to think about what our core values were and
what we liked to do best. In this article I am going to share
with you some highlights of our process to help you decide if the
route we took would be right for you.
First we made an inventory of our strengths and weaknesses. It
turns out that ranch caretaking fits our personalities and our
experience. Through The Caretaker Gazette we got a job on a
cattle ranch in northern California. Since we did our homework
and used all our job hunting skills we were able to find a job
that suits us perfectly.
There are a lot of things that go into making a good ranch
caretaker. These jobs are varied but the basic personality traits
and skills needed are the same. One of the most important things
is to be able to pass a background check. Next don't "chaw
ta-baccy" or drink to excess. Do you think we're joking? Some
employees think this is OK but most employers don't. In fact some
employers will not even like cigarette smoking. But don't give up
on the idea. Just have a plan for how you're going to deal with
the question if it comes up.
We found that potential employers were pleased that Marty is a
retired police officer. Since security is important to many
employers they like to see that kind of experience. Marty is also
a heavy equipment operator, a cowboy and jack-of-all-trades. This
is also good experience to have. If you think a ranch caretaker
just rides horses all day long you are wrong. There's always
something that needs fixing so if you can do light carpentry and
repair water systems you will be miles ahead of the rest. Ranches
will have horses to train and ride but that will be the smallest
part of the job.
Have a reliable outside income. Most caretaker jobs don't pay a
lot and ranch caretaker jobs are no exception. Since you will
undoubtedly be somewhere far off the beaten path it will be hard
to find extra work. In this economy it is doubly true. The way we
supplement our income is through social security. So if you're
older and retired don't sweat it. Actually if you're in good
health many potential employers like that you're older. You are
likely more sensible and stable. You have life experience. Don't
count yourself out.
Usually some kind of housing is offered. We were lucky enough to
find a job that provides a large house with free utilities in
addition to our stipend. This is because we have skills and a
great track record. If you don't, don't worry. Just start
somewhere simple and build on that. If you do your job well you
will move up as time goes along. Rome wasn't built in a day.
Here's a laundry list of what we do: take care of chickens,
horses, dogs, cats, a pea hen, retired bull, fallow cow, and two
burros. We repair fences and plumbing including stock water
delivery system. We patrol the property and provide security. We
know how to safely handle a pistol and rifle for rattlesnakes or
coyotes. We repair the ranch vehicles and maintain them. We're
handy setting up electric fencing with solar chargers. We cut and
split fire wood.
We do handy work including electrical repair and carpentry. This
spring we will be enlarging the chicken run. This past fall we
re-built the main compound fence. We coordinate outside labor and
then work alongside them. For example we are in the midst of
removing 15 mature trees from around the ponds. Be good and safe
with a chainsaw. We ride the ranch horses and keep them in shape
for the owners. During cow/calf season we keep an eye on them,
feed and doctor them.
For this basic labor we are rewarded with free time and a natural
rhythm that is healthy and refreshing. In summer we go to the
lake and have it to ourselves. We hike along the creek, look up
and see a bald eagle or an osprey flying over head. In winter we
drive into the mountains and have our pick of the best Christmas
trees growing wild. We enjoy the hills covered with a pristine
layer of snow. There is never a traffic jam. We frequently think,
wow, people are sitting at their desks right now trapped indoors
and have no choice.
I hope this gives you a better idea of what ranch caretaking can
be like and what skills can help you get a good job. Our dream
came true and so can yours. My parting words are: team up with
the folks at Caretaker's Gazette and don't miss a single issue.

NEVADA

central Nevada. The ranch is off-the-grid and operates on hydro
and solar. The always present work projects are: fencing, wood
cutting, cooking, cleaning and landscaping. You will have a good
deal of say as to what we do and how long we do it. You won't be

any help I get. If you like animals and enjoy the outdoors, you

Wild horses often wander onto the property. Antelope, elk, and
deer are present in the area. Lodging is very comfortable and I
can cook or you can. The menu we can decide on together, in
advance if you like. The nearest town is about 70 miles away, so

make it worthwhile. Otherwise you need to have your own vehicle.

NICARAGUA

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. My name is Celine, a 29-year-old French lady
who is living near the city of Leon, Nicaragua. I would like to
tell you a little story, so pay attention please: I have
purchased land in a little authentic fishing and surfing village
in Nicaragua called XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, in order to start a
non-profit project for children and teenagers. This village is
beautiful. I bought some land and I would like to build a
playground area and an art school. Currently everything is in
process, the more help I get, the faster we'll be, and obviously
the sooner my social non-profit project will be done. It is not
an organization. I am doing everything on my own. I have a lot of
ideas in mind but I need people to make them real. It would be
great to get some construction workers with experience,
carpenters, painters, etc. and naturally some engineers. Child
lovers with no experience are also welcome. My idea is that every
single child develops his/her creativity, imagination, etc. to
give them a chance to learn art, painting, languages, jewelry
making, dancing, playing instruments, circus stuff, cooking and
many other things, that are totally possible to learn in another
country but not here. I would like to give them a place where
they could play freely, learn skating, climbing on a bouldering
wall, play ping pong and table football, as extra activities
after school, as they have plenty of time and expect to make the
most of it. I first need volunteers who are able to help me to
build a concrete skate bowl, a wooden climbing bouldering wall, a
ping pong table and many other games. Also, renovate an eleven
meter long school bus which actually will be the volunteering
place initially. The bus will consist of a five bed sleeping
area, and another area for a kitchen shared with a table and some
seats. Work will consist in painting the interior part of the bus
and install all the facilities. Currently, there is just a toilet
and a shower and an open rancho where a campsite can be placed,
with hammocks, a gas cooker, seats, etc. Naturally you must be a
nature lover. It is all I can provide now because everything
needs to be built, but once the construction is finished, it
would be a lovely, colorful and artistic place where everyone
will be welcome. Once the bus is done, volunteers will be given
shelter in exchange to 3/4 every day hours giving language, art,
and yoga classes. The place offers lots of opportunities for the
volunteers during their free time such as surfing, climbing
volcanoes, fishing, etc. so, if you are an adventurous traveler
who feels like helping me to give a better future for the
children, I can offer you a place to stay if you give me a hand
with the project and make a better world. Please email
"XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact information for these ads is
available only to Gazette subscribers."

NORWAY

INTERESTED IN SELF-SUFFICIENCY? Want to help build a community?
Love the sea? On an organic farm a few hours north of Oslo, our
collective is for anyone keen to learn, share ideas, and work
hard. We are building a sailboat and when she is finished (we aim
for late 2013), we want to sail the world, visiting other
eco-villages, collecting knowledge and traveling in the most
eco-friendly way possible. Anyone who helps us out will have the
chance to join our crew. We also work on the farm, building up
the infrastructure to create a stable base for our community. We
live with our dog, the farm cat and some (very) free-range
chickens. We keep bees and make jam; this year we harvested our
first crop of potatoes and planted next seasons raspberries.
Eventually we hope to grow all our food. We want to create a
place that will continue to flourish, where crops, thoughts,
adventures, and of course boats, can grow! We ask for a minimum
commitment of thirty days, with a week-long trial period. We
welcome anyone as long as you are happy to work hard and help out
where needed. There are enough beds for eight volunteers and the
schedule is Monday to Friday, with approximately eight to nine
hours of work a day. Please bring your pets if you can! Boat work
is predominantly during the winter and jobs include welding the
deck, installing the engine, sewing the sails, constructing the
mast and fitting the interior. If you have any particular skills
in these areas, please let us know. On the farm you may be asked
to do anything from plowing and harvesting to jam making, roof
building, beekeeping, digging, painting, or grinding the barley
for our morning porridge. It is guaranteed that you will be asked
to cook; our diet is vegetarian and we try to eat only seasonal
food, grown as locally as possible. On the weekends there are
forests and mountains to explore, and we have skis, tents and
bikes available for those who want to go adventuring. Come help
us out and join our tribe of sea-gypsies! Please send an email to

available only to Gazette subscribers."explaining why you would
be interested in our community and please place this in Capital
Letters in the Subject Line: SEA GYPSY APLLICATION so we know you

THAILAND

VOLUNTEER TO HELP at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX located outside of the
city called Mae Rim. We are looking for volunteers who will
participate with their heart, are motivated and willing to help!
Volunteering for us is an opportunity to integrate with authentic
northern Thai culture and looking for people who are open minded
and interested in learning the Thai ways of life. We're looking
for nature lovers from anywhere in the world to join us in making
art and staying with us. You would learn how to live the Thai
lifestyle, share and eat what we eat and cook, share and plant
your own vegetables, etc. We really do like to share a part of
our rural lives. We do not need to spend or make much money for
living here. Everybody is rich in the nature which provided us
with plenty of food and everything. These are some of the
responsibilities you might have as our volunteer: help with eco
project at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX, organic orchards gardening,
general maintenance, cooking, shopping, building and making an
art project. We need you to be willing and able to take on any
work we might have for you! Don't worry! It's not too much work
every day. Just give us your free hands. You will have your own
free times. Volunteers must understand the rules and adapt
quickly to the variety of tasks they may be responsible for.
Please contact us for more details at Skype:
"XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact information for these ads is
available only to Gazette subscribers." in Thailand.

WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER(S) (couples and groups
also welcome) to work at our dog centre in Bang Saphan, Thailand
for one year (we will still accept people for shorter stays of
course). We are a small dog rescue centre which cares for 50 plus
dogs at our centre and around fifty more at a local temple. We
aim to have these dogs adopted within months of their arrival
unless they have medical problems, in which case we would keep
them at the centre and care for them. We also neuter and treat
local street dogs. You would be given your own accommodation
(this is only available if you can commit for more than six
months) for a year in exchange for helping us in our effort to
have all of our dogs adopted within the year and eventually close
the centre. Your day-to-day work will include helping with
adoptions (spreading awareness), treating and caring for the dogs
(feeding, cleaning, etc), helping with rescues and fundraising.
Headrock Dogs Rescue will still exist once the centre dogs have
been adopted but we will only treat and care for the dogs at the
temple and on the street beyond this point. Bang Saphan is a well
hidden secret and we want to keep it that way except for
volunteers who appreciate the natural beauty of Thailand and a
peaceful harmonious place to stay that makes you think of
paradise. If you would like to come and volunteer with us we will
help you organize your trip. We can arrange transportation to the
area, advise you on flights, supply information about where to
eat and what is good for trips, etc. We don't charge you for
coming to volunteer; we just appreciate your help. Please read
the thoughts of past volunteers at "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note:

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED on 150 acres of land in amazing red rock
canyons in the juniper and pinion forest and canyon lands of the
high desert on the Colorado Plateau. The year-round creek bisects
the property with a grove of cottonwoods. Almost 20 Anasazi sites
are scattered around the property, with cliff ruins, petroglyphs
and pictographs decorating the canyon walls. 21 acres of grape
vines, a thousand fruit and nut trees, and a prolific garden make
up the main work to be done on the property. Length of stay is up
to you, ranging from a couple of weeks, to all summer. Working
months are between the 1st of March and end of November, the
beginning and end of the frost free days. Average group size is
six to eight, and accommodations are in a cabin built by
volunteers. Everyone is expected to spend six hours on weekdays
learning how to prune and take care of grape vines or fruit and
nut trees, weed, harvest, and work on any variety of other
projects. Since we are 15 miles from the nearest town (10 on dirt
roads) we try to carpool as much as possible, so just hop a ride
whenever someone is going to town. I am a 27-year-old graduate of
UC Santa Cruz, and I decided to turn the ranch into a viable
organic farm and vineyard. I provide three meals a day plus
snacks, showers, and comfortable beds. The weekends are spent
exploring the national parks or the endless high desert
wilderness around the property. Ideal volunteers are adventurous,
hardworking, and can be kind and respectful in a group
