LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

We are interested in information about house sitting or becoming
property caretakers when we retire in about 10 years. What type
of training (classes, experience, etc.) would be helpful to
prepare for this lifestyle? My husband has had his own
contracting business and I have many years experience in office
management and customer service. V. P., Candor, NY

Hi Victoria, thanks for asking. Over the decades, we have heard
very good things about XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX training programs - you
can learn more at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX There may be other training
programs available - if anyone would like to share their training

Gary, it looks like the perfect person found my help-wanted ad
thanks to you. We have done everything to dissuade him but he has
persisted and convinced us to give him the chance. His references
were excellent, and his character is exactly what is needed in
the Alaska Bush. And so he will be here the end of May. I will
keep you posted and updated if you'd like! Hopefully he will have
something good to say about us in the future. Thanks Gary!
Regards, T. B., North Pole, Alaska

Tammy, that’s great news! Please let us know how it works
out. Hopefully we can feature your property and your new
caretaker in a future Caretaker Profile story in the Gazette.

Hi Gary, just writing to let you know that my Situation Wanted ad
in the Gazette worked very well for me! I was contacted by three
property owners and offered a position by one. I’m in the
process of getting my things in order and waiting to make the big
jump this spring. Thanks Gary. L. M., Binghamton, NY

Hi Len, thanks for sharing your good news with us. I’m glad
your Situations Wanted ad resulted in an offer for you. Please
keep in touch and let us know about your new position.

Our caretaker wanted ad in your Gazette resulted in such a fast
and overwhelming response for us! So many great candidates
applied, it wasn’t easy narrowing it down to just one!
Thank you for your great publication. P. Y., Portland, Maine

Thank you for your message, Paula. It’s good to hear that
your help-wanted ad for a caretaker resulted in so many strong
applicants. Please keep us in mind if you need to advertise for
another caretaker in the future.

Hi Gary and staff, I am really impressed with the people in your
caretaker profiles. Can you tell me how to get selected for this
feature? It seems like a great way to let property owners know
about me. M. V., Mendocino, CA

Hi Mike, thanks for your nice message. We have an impressive
group of caretakers and housesitters who subscribe to the
Gazette. In order to be selected for a Caretaker Profile, you
need to be working as a housesitter or caretaker, submit a
900-word story about your experience (we always recommend that
you read through several profiles to get an idea as to what we
look for), and include two photos – one of you on the
property and a view of the property.

COLORADO

HOUSESITTER(S) NEEDED in southeastern Colorado for a few weeks
from mid-February to the end of March. This is not a paid
position. I need a couple or single person (non-smokers) to care
for my property and animals... horses, goats, dog, cats and an
assortment of birds. These are the chores here: feed and water
all the critters in the morning (about 20 minutes with two
people) and then feed again and secure in the evening (15
minutes). The critters all know the procedure and have the
routine down by heart. I will need someone who is willing to
continue the sprouting of the barley fodder which is a new
venture for me... and the trays subsidize the food for all the
critters. This is about an hour task each day... you can YouTube
the concept, or google for more information. The drought and the
shortage of hay in the area have forced me to explore this source
of food for the animals. Then the longest "chore" is
walking the dogs... I would like to think that you enjoy this
exercise yourself and it's not a drag doing so. We have two very
affectionate Pyrenees (a male and female) who mind the bird area
and love to come out for a walk twice a day (a half mile). I then
walk with the two Collies (two miles in the AM and one at night)
on the walking track out in the fields. The trees may need
watering utilizing the drip system… this only involves
turning on and off the faucets/hydrants. I'll hope for spring
rains. Accommodation will be the master bedroom, with attached
bathroom. The house has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, den, lounge,
and kitchen with an attached dining room. Clean and tidy. My home
has TV, DVD, video, wireless internet, sewing machine, and all
the essentials like a bread making machine and coffee maker. The
property is in town and is seven acres (or two town blocks). The
town is 90 minutes from Colorado Springs. We have several
bicycles available. There are a couple of lakes really handy;
beautiful at this time of year for a wander. You can also walk to
the excellent community library and into town. Our rural, farming
community population is 1,200. The nearby counties have an early
trading settlement to visit, the Arkansas River close by,
preserved dinosaur tracks, and many places if you like exploring
your environs. First time housesitters are OK. You just ought to
love animals and be happy to spend time caring for them. Overall
this is an active housesit for someone who is open to learning,
and being engaged. I start my day outside at 8 AM, and after all
the walking, feeding and barley tray work, I'm done by 11 AM. I
then start walking and feeding again at 4:30 PM and I'm done by
5:30 PM. But I am not rushing and enjoy being outside and in the
fresh air. We have lovely sunsets here. I am sorry, but I am not
set up for your own animals, nor young children. There are no
critters inside my home. Thanks for your interest. You may well
recognize this ad as we have posted here before... please feel
free to reapply if you wish. Please email

others (human and other species) can simply live. We need help
from Peace Corp like minded folks so we can help save and take
care of the planet. We want to attract folks who have more
altruistic/giving personalities and who want to directly stop the
insanity, vs. self indulgence/takers who are looking for a new
adventure/vacation/cheap hangout (still about me, myself, and I,
escapism, and adding to the problem). You can learn to become
part of the solution instead part of the problem. We are an
educational living project that aligns with peer reviewed
scientific evidence that inspires us to come up with solutions to
co-create the mother of us all in a fair, healthy, sustainable
and responsible way. Rick is a physician and needs help so that
he can finish writing a book and educate rather than medicate
about creating a fair, responsible, healthy and sustainable
Earth. Do you feel the pulse of the planet? Have you heard the
voice of Ishmael the Gorilla? Long term/occasional short term

free. County bus transportation is one dollar. Live local, think
global and be hopeful. Please send your resume, references, and
photo to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

ICELAND

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED in Reykjavik starting March 21. How aware are
we of our environment? What are our priorities in life? Do we
value our possessions or our relationships? Why? How has humanity
reached a state of no return? Why didn’t we prevent it? Is
it possible to do something now? Sorry, no more petrol: how do we
live now? These and many more questions will be the focus of the
project training sessions. SEEDS volunteers will have the
opportunity to meet people really concerned about these issues
and to learn in a collective way while enjoying the incredible
environment of Iceland. First we will learn something more about
the facts. Different aspects of environmental issues will be
considered. The daily schedule may include trainings/sessions on
sustainable development, the environment in a political context
(environmental politics), rethinking architecture and our way of
living, carbon emissions calculation, green and ISO certificates,
organic farming, global warming (climate change), the three R s
(Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), the (hidden) costs of transport,
renewable energy sources (focus on Iceland’s hydroelectric
and geothermal energy). Then we will discuss the facts and tailor
them to the specific needs of the group. During this process we
will organize visits with environmental interest such as going to
the recycle centers of Reykjavik or a geothermal power plant. We
will also have some activities that will solidify our knowledge
and will help us to see all that topics in a practical and funny
way. Finally we will discuss possible solutions and how we can be
actively aware. SEEDS volunteers will stay in a well equipped
house in downtown Reykjavik. The facilities are basic with only
one shower and volunteers are expected to show consideration for
their companions. Volunteers will be sleeping in shared rooms in
a sleeping bag accommodation. Please bring your own sleeping bag.
Volunteers will receive food and be in charge of cooking and
cleaning. Do not forget some traditional/typical food from your
home country for the international evening, when others can try
and taste some specialties from your home countries. Please note
that the food for these series of projects will be mainly (and if
possible) local Icelandic. The population of Iceland’s
capital, Reykjavik, is over 200,000 including the metropolitan
area, so two thirds of Iceland’s inhabitants live here. It
is a dynamic, modern city which lives in harmony with beautiful
nature, using renewable energy sources. Reykjavik is often called
the nightlife capital of the north, but there is more: it also
gathers the most interesting of Icelandic culture; it is an
incubator of new ideas and styles. It is an International city
with a lively cosmopolitan cultural scene surrounded with
beautiful nature. Visitors to Reykjavik experience easily the
pure energy at the heart of Iceland’s capital city -
whether from the boiling thermal energy underground, the natural
green energy within the city and around it, or the lively culture
and fun-filled nightlife. In March you can see the Northern
lights (Aurora Borealis) in Iceland. In the area closer than 100
Km from Reykjavik, there are several spectacular waterfalls,
geysers, impressive coastline and the well-known geothermal Blue
Lagoon spa to visit. A participation fee of 160 Euros will need
to be paid to SEEDS. Please note that the fees are to be paid on
arrival in Euros or Kronur and they include full board and
lodging (food and accommodation) for the whole duration of the
project. Volunteers should have a motivation to learning and
sharing on environmental and global issues. English will be the
language in the camp; basic conversational skills are needed. To
learn more, please visit XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

CARETAKER PROFILE
“From Corporate Life to the Life of Caretaking”
Dates of Birth: Rome: 09/68, Rebecca: 10/72
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Interests: creating art, cooking fine cuisine, movies, gardening,
horseback riding, K-9 dog training.
Quote: “If all you ever do is all you’ve ever done,
then all you’ll ever get is all you’ve ever
got.”

Rome and Rebecca Flores

When they first met in Las Vegas, both Rome and Rebecca were
aggressively climbing the corporate ladder. Rome recalls,
“At that time, each of us was no stranger to hard
work.” Rebecca and her three siblings were raised by a
single mother and Rome, at the age of sixteen, applied for
emancipation and began to live independently. Each acquired a
strong work ethic at a young age. Separately they both aspired to
fulfill their desire for a corner office on the upper floor of
some faceless high rise office building. Neither of them was
expecting to fall in love.
Rome’s story starts out in a small, rural Indiana county
surrounded by dairy farms, corn fields and a variety of four- and
two-legged animals. Rome worked alongside his father, yet he
yearned for the big city and the big job. He earned a scholarship
to Columbus College for Art and Design. In addition to his skills
in art and design and in the culinary arts, Rome mastered the
essentials of construction under the tutelage of a master. Eager
to join the ranks of corporate America, Rome left for the booming
city of Las Vegas. Rebecca’s story begins in sunny
California where she spent most of her time on her Uncle
Jack’s horse ranch. She easily developed a love of all
animals. After a move to Las Vegas Rebecca initially pursued the
field of veterinary medicine, but the call of the white collar
corporate lifestyle led her to switch careers. Rebecca soon found
herself in the position of lead paralegal for one of
Nevada’s largest law firms.
Rome recalls, “Rebecca and I met at an orientation for a
large California corporation that was expanding into the thriving
markets of Las Vegas. We both had desires to reach the top of our
fields, neither of us had any interest in slowing down, neither
of us had any interest in falling in love.” Fall in love
they did. From the very first meeting it was love and, according
to the couple, “A match made in the heavens.” Rebecca
will tell you, “I knew from that day I was going to marry
Rome.” Rome says, “The wedding, on the Las Vegas
Strip was corporate sponsored. We said our vows underwater, in a
1,000 gallon fish tank, wearing wet suits. In true corporate
fashion the event crossed with a restaurant opening promotion and
made newspapers in over 30 cities from coast to coast.”
During the early years of their marriage both Rome and Rebecca
pursued their careers and made great strides in the corporate
world. Rebecca was the top paralegal of her law firm. Rome was an
upcoming star and the youngest project manager on the Las Vegas
Strip. They even had time to start an international business
importing building materials. Earning great money but working
long hours and weekends, the couple hardly saw each other. In
2008 the housing bubble burst in Las Vegas. Rome and Rebecca had
to make a tough decision: “Should we stay or should we
go?” They decided to pull up stakes and move to the beaches
of the East Coast. One day Rebecca came across an article in The
New York Times about caretaking and The Caretaker Gazette. Rome
was dubious, but Rebecca convinced her husband to look into it.
They subscribed to The Caretaker Gazette and responded to a few
ads: they received three job offers. Montana, Idaho, and Georgia
were calling but the couple still had some reservations. With
halting curiosity they decided to drive out to the country to
meet the owners of a 60+ acre horse ranch.
Halfway through their first meeting with the owners, Rome and
Rebecca knew they would be happy there. Although they told the
owners that they would have to discuss the opportunity between
themselves, they knew before they got back home that was what
they wanted to do and where they wanted to be. Rome could easily
manage the daily care of horses and light maintenance of the
property; a commitment of 20 hours a week. In return, the couple
would live in a two bedroom, two bathroom cottage and earn a
small stipend.
Caretaking on the ranch is a seven-day-a-week commitment. In
Rome’s and Rebecca’s situation they have a fairly
informal arrangement with the property owners. Rome routinely
starts his days early, just before the horses’ feeding
time. After a golf cart ride with the dogs to the pond to feed
the ducks, Rome is off to do his chores. Prioritizing the needs
of the ranch and being a self-starter are important attributes.
The work week normally includes light maintenance and simple
tasks. Mending fences, clearing the riding trails, grooming and
other horse care, cutting the grass around the main house, and
gardening are standard. Rebecca helps out twice a week at the
main house with the vacuuming, dusting, light cleaning, and will
occasionally assist the owners with computers and letter
writing.
According to Rome, “Rebecca and I both will tell you that
caretaking is a simple and stress-free life that comes with many
valuable benefits. Our recommendation to anyone who is interested
in caretaking as a career is to understand there are many
different types of positions available. Take the time to
familiarize yourself with the wide variety. Get to know the
potential employers and ask questions to make sure you understand
what will be expected of you.” Three years after abandoning
corporate America, Rome and Rebecca have forgotten any reason to
strive to climb the corporate ladder. The couple is still in
love and loves the caretaking lifestyle. Although other
opportunities still exist, they find themselves quite content to
be in the life of caretaking. The only complaint you will hear
from Rome is, “Rebecca, Why didn’t you make me do
this years ago?”

I AM AN OLDER WOMAN, living on five mostly undeveloped acres just
outside Roswell, NM (yes, that Roswell) who needs help both
inside and out, including small plumbing and electrical jobs,
tiling, carpentry, landscaping (xeriscape), fencing and turning
at least half of the property into a site suitable for goats,
llamas and chickens, as well as a garden. And, if you're into
cooking or housekeeping, I wouldn't turn that down either. I also
have several older motorcycles (my means of transportation) that
could use some TLC if anyone has mechanical knowledge. You'd get
a private room (shared bath) in my home, and could work as many
or as few hours a day as you'd like. I love meeting folks from
around the world. The help will be nice, but just meeting
interesting folks is the best part. I'm also a font of knowledge
about what there is to do in New Mexico (aside from Roswell
aliens) and would give you lots of time to explore. Since I'm new
to this I have no references. For more information, please call
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

HELP WANTED. A family man, farm and ranch hand needed. Need to

and cattle care. Housing available, health insurance, and a good
salary for a qualified individual. Please mail your resume and

THIS IS AN HISTORIC HIPPIE COMMUNE from the 60's, which has
become a working permaculture farm for vegetables, berries, fruit
and chickens. The Rio Hondo drains Taos Ski Valley (18 miles
away) into the Rio Grande (one mile away). Our fields of grasses,
sage, pinion pine and juniper look up to the Sangre de Christo
Mountains and down on the Rio Hondo gorge. We live and teach
self-sufficiency, have a large adobe solar home and shop,
outbuildings, greenhouse, and root cellar. We love art, music,
beauty, simplicity, natural healing, and helping one another
attain skills to live successfully in challenging times. We're
happy to share teaching and learning farming and survival skills
with others who are open, flexible, and independent. We accept a
limited number of farm helpers but are always open to meet new
people and to talk. Experience is great yet a solid work ethic
and genuine interest in sustainable agriculture are more
important. A good helper should be able to listen to directions,
but also be innovative and take initiative. Farming in the
northern New Mexico climate is challenging and full of surprises,
so it's difficult to set regular, daily task schedules most times
of the year. Thus, we are looking for people who are flexible and
adaptable, who can focus on one task and then quickly change
gears to something else. This includes the ability to work
different schedules at different times. We expect a solid
twenty-five hours per week, and offer flexible down-time to
pursue your own interests here or in the culturally rich nearby
village of Taos and New Mexico itself. This experience is more
than farming. New Buffalo is also about living and working
together in a group setting. Though there are no children at the
moment, we are already a diverse group of people in terms of age,
and the ability to work and live in a multi-generational setting
is a must. We are looking for people with the emotional maturity
and communication skills to be able to discuss issues that might
arise with honesty and compassion. At the moment we are hoping to
fill a few, very specific, longer-term positions. The first,
ideally at least a four-month minimum, is for part-time farming
and part-time housekeeping that would include food and a private
room in the main building. The housekeeping tasks are fairly
light, but helping to manage the main building is a must, and
could involve helping occasional guests, workshops, or retreats.
The second position or rather, positions would be another
four-month minimum stay, preferably from June through September.
Ideally, a couple would fill this position and live in a
comfortable two-room adobe attached to our new 900' greenhouse.
There is also a very rustic, plumbed space which could be
developed into a kitchen. This position would be mostly farming
and includes daily management of the greenhouse attached to the
facility. Work could be shared between two people, but a genuine
interest in small-scale, regenerative agriculture is a must. If
any of these situations seem interesting, please write to us and
we would be happy to discuss it further and answer any questions.
Please mail your letter to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

NICARAGUA

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. My name is Celine, a 29-year-old French lady
who is living near the city of Leon, Nicaragua. I would like to
tell you a little story, so pay attention please: I have
purchased land in a little authentic fishing and surfing village
in Nicaragua called Jiquilillo, in order to start a non-profit
project for children and teenagers. This village is beautiful.
One can find many open-hearted people and children everywhere
here who just want to learn more, but unfortunately they
don’t have this chance, unlike powerful countries such as
the United States or European ones, children don't have the
chance to attend to learning based activities or practice any
kind of sport because there are no facilities to make it
possible. I bought some land and I would like to build a
playground area and an art school. Currently everything is in
process, the more help I get, the faster we'll be, and obviously
the sooner my social non-profit project will be done. It is not
an organization. I am doing everything on my own. I have a lot of
ideas in mind but I need people to make them real. It would be
great to get some construction workers with experience,
carpenters, painters, etc. and naturally some engineers. Child
lovers with no experience are also welcome. My idea is that every
single child develops his/her creativity, imagination, etc. to
give them a chance to learn art, painting, languages, jewelry
making, dancing, playing instruments, circus stuff, cooking and
many other things, that are totally possible to learn in another
country but not here. I would like to give them a place where
they could play freely, learn skating, climbing on a bouldering
wall, play ping pong and table football, as extra activities
after school, as they have plenty of time and expect to make the
most of it. I first need volunteers who are able to help me to
build a concrete skate bowl, a wooden climbing bouldering wall, a
ping pong table and many other games. Also, renovate an eleven
meter long school bus which actually will be the volunteering
place initially. The bus will consist of a five bed sleeping
area, and another area for a kitchen shared with a table and some
seats. Work will consist in painting the interior part of the bus
and install all the facilities. Currently, there is just a toilet
and a shower and an open rancho where a campsite can be placed,
with hammocks, a gas cooker, seats, etc. Naturally you must be a
nature lover. It is all I can provide now because everything
needs to be built, but once the construction is finished, it
would be a lovely, colorful and artistic place where everyone
will be welcome. Once the bus is done, volunteers will be given
shelter in exchange to 3/4 every day hours giving language, art,
and yoga classes. The place offers lots of opportunities for the
volunteers during their free time such as surfing, climbing
volcanoes, fishing, etc. so, if you are an adventurous traveler
who feels like helping me to give a better future for the
children, I can offer you a place to stay if you give me a hand
with the project and make a better world. Hopefully you can join
me! Please email Celine at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.
