A VOLUNTEER COUPLE is needed as Park Hosts to provide visitor
assistance at Holy Ground Battlefield Park, on weekends and
holidays from April to September (Labor Day), 2009.
Responsibilities would include greeting visitors; making routine
patrols in the park; checking for minor violations; reporting
maintenance problems; explaining the day use fee to boaters and
swimmers, securing the park at closing. A Contract Park Attendant

October 15, 2009. The Assistant Farm Manager will work directly
with the Farmer/Educational Farm Program Director in the
day-to-day running of a 35-share CSA and Market Garden. This
position requires at least one year of farming experience. Spring
Creek Farm is located on Alaska Pacific University's 750-acre
Kellogg Campus in Palmer. Duties: managing indoor starts and
transplants, hardening off and planting into field beds and high
tunnels, direct seeding, irrigation, fertility management,
compost making, weeding and tillage, greenhouse and high tunnel
management, and harvesting. A monthly living stipend of
approximately $1,000 is provided, an Education Award up to
$2,362, and child care assistance (if eligible). Housing is
provided on-site in exchange for minimal caretaker

ARIZONA

CAMP HOSTS needed for a year around, members only campground

Arizona’s best year around climate. The new 28 site

musicians, and artists. Work opportunities include tending the
extensive herbal, ornamental, and vegetable gardens, as well as
learning the many facets of animal husbandry. Volunteers have an
opportunity to learn feeding, milking, cheese and yogurt making,
permaculture and greenhouse gardening, composting, planting,
weeding, harvesting, how to control pests organically, storing
food for long periods, meal preparation, and construction.
Visitors are invited to stay one week initially and asked to work
six hours/day, six days/week. Tent accommodations are always
available. Depending on the time-frame, yurt space or shared

Dear Gary, I called one of your advertisers today and spoke to a
consultant at Professional Domestic Services and Institute about
a position I saw advertised in the Gazette. I’m writing to
complain because I was told they could not represent me unless I
attended their Institute or took one of their home study courses.
I think this is unfair! I am 45 years old and have cared for my
own lovely home for many years. I am an excellent housekeeper. I
enjoy cleaning and have helped my sister and other family members
with their cleaning, while I raised my kids. I think life
experience should count for something. Do you know why
Professional Domestic Services and Institute can’t

Dear Beth, believe me, we sympathize with your situation, but
the information and advice our consultant gave to you was
absolutely correct. Many people feel their “life
experience” is enough to qualify them for a Household

based on luxurious Hamilton Island in the Great Barrier Reef.
It’s a live-in position with flexible working hours and key

Great Barrier Reef is a pretty unique benefit, but the successful

Supervise and maintain two rental homes which house seven to ten
individuals, mostly university students. Also perform (usually)
minor repairs on the property and care for a 20 acre surrounding
parcel, which includes minor care of a little livestock, upkeep
of small orchard and tree crops and access to large garden and
cropland for your own usage if desired. A qualified candidate
should have competency in general maintenance, carpentry,

CARETAKER POSITION offered in Northern California’s
Siskiyou County in Hornbrook, CA. Willing to provide free parking
and rent for your RV in exchange for part-time and easy caretaker
duties on my ranch, keeping trespassers away. This is

southeast of San Diego, nestled in a serene mountain valley at
2,000 feet. We are an eclectic community interested in exchanging
ideas and living in a sustainable and balanced manner with the
earth. A spiritual lifestyle is integral to our focus and we
encourage visitors to join us for meditation, sweat  lodges, and
other uplifting interactions. Our kitchen prepares vegetarian and
vegan food. English is the spoken language. Help is usually
needed year round. While we re-build our infra-structure,
however, we will not need help until Spring 2009. Then we will
need help setting and tending 15,000 White Sage seeds for Fall

Transportation can be provided to and from San Diego or to public

may consist of sowing, planting, weeding, harvesting, watering,

Pets are not allowed. Children may be allowed. Minimum stay is

of reforming our community and living spaces are limited. We need

For the past eight years I have been trading gardening services
for rent where I live on a 150 year old, 20-acre avocado ranch in
Carpinteria, CA. The Caldwell family originally homesteaded the
property around 1850. The land was covered with walnut, apricot,
nectarine, peach, lemon, orange, guava, cherimoya, pomegranate,
macadamia nut, avocado trees and more. The legacy of the Caldwell
farming history permeates to this day as the original trees
served as grafting material for many of the exotic fruit trees in
the area today. The ranch is mainly comprised of orange and
avocado trees for export now. The ranch is also home to some of
the largest oak, sycamore and eucalyptus groves in Santa Barbara.
Because of this there are many varieties of birds as well;
robins, woodpeckers, finches, doves, pigeons, blackbirds, hawks,
even an occasional rare California condor roam this area. This is
especially important right now as infestations of apple moth and
oak moth have been discovered. This year the Department of
Agriculture has set out thousands of traps using pheromones to
control these pests naturally. Of course the birds are the best
natural control as we now have thousands of birds eating these
pests daily. Quite a treat to have literally hundreds of birds at
a time on the lawn area playing and eating!  Nature at its best! 

I originally began tending the grounds at the ranch house in 1979
as the owner and operator of Ladybug Gardening and continued
maintenance of the ranch for about 10 years. I lived on another
ranch across town at the time raising my two children, milk
goats, chickens and a huge organic garden with vegetables and
raspberries. It was back in the 80’s when the local
farmer’s market began here and we were one of the first
farmers to bring our fresh produce to the public. I also love to
make jams and jellies throughout each year, making use of all the
wonderful fruit available here. The house is decorated with many
Christmas trees and angels throughout and up throughout the year.
It truly is Christmas here year round! Then each December 26, we
have “goodie day” where all the neighbors as well as
family come in to enjoy many treats. It’s always an
interesting time here at the house filled with photographs and
history of the past. 
In 1989 I moved to Oregon as a severe drought hit the Santa
Barbara area. Many of the trees and plants died at this time.
During my time in Oregon I worked for Bear Creek Corporation;
Harry and David (a fruit company) and Jackson and Perkins (a rose
and flower catalog company) where I collected many special
varieties of roses and perennials. When I left Oregon I brought
with me All these special plants I loved so. Little did I know I
would plant most of these plants at the ranch house to replace
those that were lost during the drought.  
In 1998, the owners decided to retire to the ranch; the original
1898 structure was refurbished and a new wing added as well. It
was a long two years in building a three car garage, a studio
above. Sadly, whatever plants that lived through the drought did
not make it through the construction stage. Even the double white
poinsettias some 15 ft. tall died during the construction, which
hurt. Finally in the year 2000, the family moved in and I was
asked to reside at the ranch, rent-free, in exchange for
maintaining the rose garden, flower beds, and the irrigation
system. When I returned in 2000, I replanted the gardens. Today
all 40 roses are either David Austin English roses or heritage
fragrant hybrid teas or climbers. In the surrounding gardens
there are now double poinsettias, hydrangeas, fuchsias, begonias,
lycoris, agapanthus, anemones, to name a few. Taking care of the
gardens, watering, fertilizing, pruning are my main duties but
over time I have become part of the family and now help to look
after Kay and Tony, who are nearly 80 years old.  I am also a CNA
(certified nurse’s aide), my duties now include occasional
care giving, cleaning and cooking at times. 
Over the past eight years I have also gained the trust of many
clients in California, Oregon and Hawaii performing house and pet
sitting services through my private company Ladybug Services. I
have had the pleasure of caretaking many homes, ranches and pets
in beautiful places. It truly is a fun lifestyle! In 2004 I also
became a loan originator in the financial industry and also got
