property through August, 2018. Looking for a seasonal couple to
care for 40 acres, six mules, two donkeys, two old dogs and a

ARKANSAS

MOUNTAIN HOME Project/General Recreation Program Assistant needed
through September 30, 2018. We have one volunteer position
available for someone with their own RV to provide assistance to
Park Rangers. Responsibilities may include: assisting with
collecting traffic counter data; delivering supplies to
gatehouses; updating visitor information in park kiosks;
installation of signage, park/campsite maintenance and repairs,
operation of equipment, etc. The desired volunteer must have a
current driver's license, a pleasant personality, be willing to
complete other duties if assigned, and must maintain a
professional appearance and manner. The flexible work schedule is
a minimum of 24 hours per week.  Shifts will be eight hours in
length, depending on situational requirements, and will be worked
at predetermined times.  A free RV campsite, which includes

looking for a mature single, or couple (no children please) who
are healthy and English-speaking to live rent-free in a separate
guest house located in a prestigious gated community near Little

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR 

Dear Mr. Dunn, I would like to take time to thank you and your
magazine for helping me live a dream of mine for many years. I am
not a great writer so I apologize ahead of time, please don't
hold that against me, but I think you will get the jist of it. I
found your magazine approximately eight years ago and it has led
me on adventures of a lifetime. First to the Darwin Ranch owned
then by Loring and Melody Woodman. What wonderful people and all
the folks I met during my time as a caretaker there. They had me
as the late winter/early spring caretaker of the isolated Darwin
Ranch deep inside the Gros Ventres wilderness in Wyoming. What an
absolute incredible experience. I learned about off grid living.
They let me stay on through June almost July of that year. We
still stay in contact periodically. After that, on my own, I
started a series of adventures in the Northwest and Southwest
discovering our beautiful country and the people who live here. I
saw and experienced things most people only read about and see on
National Geographic shows. Sunrises on Mountain tops, hiking by
the light of a full moon at midnight through wild and isolated
valleys, sleeping under the stars in the desert - I could go on
and on. What a treat for one little guy from Connecticut. Now
fast forward to today. Once again I am on an adventure because of
your magazine. I am the caretaker in Bisgouet, France at Chateau
Bosgouet. I help with the grounds (50 acre historic estate) and
the permaculture farming. I never thought I would get to Europe.
They let me use their place as my base of exploration to places
like Rome, Madrid, Lisbon, etc. Well you've probably had enough
of my bad writing and sentence structure but from the bottom of
my heart: thank you. Without you and your magazine I would have
never been able to experience any of these things. I will always

Dear Gary: Just a thought - I have talked with other subscribers
and some of us have faced the same frustrating dilemma. We send
resumes, information, and even a SASE to some potential employers
and never hear a word. No notice that our information was
received, no word that the caretaking position has been filled or
they're simply not interested in us, etc. Is there some way your
publication can encourage an article for persons placing ads
advocating some sort of response to applicants? I know this is
hard. It just seems there is no courtesy anymore. They won't even
return a SASE saying they're not interested! Just something to

Keith, I always ask the advertisers to have the common
courtesy to reply to all applicants, even after they fill their
position. We've printed notices about it in the Gazette and will
continue to request that all advertisers kindly respond to all
applicants, and hope they comply! Many of our advertisers do
respond to applicants, even if it's just a postcard or an email
message indicating that they have filled their position.

BELGIUM

WORK EXCHANGE available. We are a 34 and 36-year-old couple.
Ellen is a social worker and Bjorn is a nurse. We have been
travelling a fair bit as well, but now we would like to open up
our home to travelers who would like to visit our region in
return for some hours of work a day. We live in a rather small
village, Assenede, in the Belgian province of East Flanders. If
you have your own car you can get to Gent, Antwerp, and Brugge
quite easily. You will be working for four hours a day. You will
have two full days off a week. We will provide you with your own
room and three meals a day. The bathroom and other rooms are
shared with us. You will be mainly working outside doing some
gardening, mowing the grass, picking weeds, etc. Another task is

WANTED TWO PERSONS OR A SEMI-RETIRED COUPLE to caretake

four weeks anytime from March to November. Your primary
responsibility is having a presence on the property. Duties as of
this date will be the care and feeding of six dogs, fishes,

CALIFORNIA

CARETAKER WANTED. Seeking a full-time caretaker for ranchettes
located in Big Sur, CA. The position is responsible for the
maintenance of the families' homes, common building, solar
systems and grounds. Caretaker duties include grounds, roads and
trail upkeep and overseeing cleaning of homes after family and
guest visits. Must be detail oriented, and possess communication
and computer skills. Plumbing, electrical, and carpentry
experience is needed. Forest fire safety and prevention measures
are a priority. The caretaker will live onsite. The Big Sur ranch
is home to one Llama and a few chickens that the caretaker is
responsible for feeding. Married couples are encouraged to apply

remote locations of the properties, the position is not suited

acres. A caretaker with an RV or motor home would work best here,

a small ranch caretaker in Ventura County. The ranch caretaker
should have past experience around horses which would include
feeding and daily cleaning of stalls and corrals and understand
light grooming of horses. The ranch requires a resident worker
who needs to be on hand to care for the horses and maintain
property security at all times. Most property upkeep would
include watering, pruning of trees and shrubs. The caretaker must
be familiar with most all small property repairs including repair
of irrigation sprinklers and irrigation pipe. Use of chain saw,
light tractor work and regular maintenance of small ranch ATV

work is physical and might require a good physical condition, it

markets of Las Vegas. We both had desires to reach the top of our
fields, neither of us had any interest in slowing down, neither
of us had any interest in falling in love.  Fall in love they
did. From the very first meeting it was love and, according to
the couple, A match made in the heavens. Rebecca will tell you, I
knew from that day I was going to marry Rome. Rome says, The
wedding, on the Las Vegas Strip was corporate sponsored. We said
our vows underwater, in a 1,000 gallon fish tank, wearing wet
suits. In true corporate fashion the event crossed with a
restaurant opening promotion and made newspapers in over 30
cities from coast to coast.
During the early years of their marriage both Rome and Rebecca
pursued their careers and made great strides in the corporate
world. Rebecca was the top paralegal of her law firm. Rome was an
upcoming star and the youngest project manager on the Las Vegas
Strip. They even had time to start an international business
importing building materials.  Earning great money but working
long hours and weekends, the couple hardly saw each other. In
2008 the housing bubble burst in Las Vegas. Rome and Rebecca had
to make a tough decision: Should we stay or should we go? They
decided to pull up stakes and move to the beaches of the East
Coast. One day Rebecca came across an article in The New York
Times about caretaking and The Caretaker Gazette. Rome was
dubious, but Rebecca convinced her husband to look into it. They
subscribed to The Caretaker Gazette and responded to a few ads:
they received three job offers. Montana, Idaho, and Georgia were
calling but the couple still had some reservations. With halting
curiosity they decided to drive out to the country to meet the
owners of a 60+ acre horse ranch.
	Halfway through their first meeting with the owners, Rome and
Rebecca knew they would be happy there. Although they told the
owners that they would have to discuss the opportunity between
themselves, they knew before they got back home that was what
they wanted to do and where they wanted to be. Rome could easily
manage the daily care of horses and light maintenance of the
property; a commitment of 20 hours a week. In return, the couple
would live in a two bedroom, two bathroom cottage and earn a
small stipend.
	Caretaking on the ranch is a seven-day-a-week commitment. In
Rome's and Rebecca's situation they have a fairly informal
arrangement with the property owners. Rome routinely starts his
days early, just before the horses feeding time. After a golf
cart ride with the dogs to the pond to feed the ducks, Rome is
off to do his chores. Prioritizing the needs of the ranch and
being a self-starter are important attributes. The work week
normally includes light maintenance and simple tasks. Mending
fences, clearing the riding trails, grooming and other horse
care, cutting the grass around the main house, and gardening are
standard. Rebecca helps out twice a week at the main house with
the vacuuming, dusting, light cleaning, and will occasionally
assist the owners with computers and letter writing.
	According to Rome, Rebecca and I both will tell you that
caretaking is a simple and stress-free life that comes with many
valuable benefits. Our recommendation to anyone who is interested
in caretaking as a career is to understand there are many
different types of positions available. Take the time to
familiarize yourself with the wide variety. Get to know the
potential employers and ask questions to make sure you understand
what will be expected of you. Eight years after abandoning
corporate America, Rome and Rebecca have forgotten any reason to
strive to climb the corporate ladder.  The couple is still in
love and loves the caretaking lifestyle. Although other
opportunities still exist, they find themselves quite content to
be in the life of caretaking. The only complaint you will hear
from Rome is, Rebecca, Why didn't you make me do this years ago?
