ARIZONA
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX is a not-for profit
organization geared toward converting the well-worn words
"sustainability" and "community" from pretty flowers to delicious
fruit. We are in the genesis of building a self-reliant,
ecologically conscious, and holistically healthy community on a
stretch of 64 acres, 26 miles west of Tucson. One of the
actual steps we are currently taking is the creation of a (circa)
1/4 acre food forest. This edible landscape will consist of
climate-adjusted boreal fruit trees as well as some of the prize
canopies of the Southwest. Aside from containing a significant
area for annual gardening, it will also be home to several
high-value indigenous and naturalized medicinal herbs. This food
foresting initiative will be prototypic of a considerably larger
version slated for several acres on our land. In essence, we are
beginning to produce our necessary resources on-site. Together
with our neighboring eco-village, we are also exploring various
natural building methods including tepees and adobe. Our land,
with its expanse of mesquite trees and medley of cacti, is
reminiscent of that virgin West characteristic of a much earlier
America. During the day, in every distant direction one can
behold a mountainous horizon. During the night, every up-turned
face is beheld by a sea of stars. Our space is indeed a small
wonder. We welcome compassionate, inquisitive, and energetic
self-starters willing to better themselves and impact the world
in a productive way. In exchange for the contribution of diligent
work by self-motivated volunteers, we provide modest, rustic, yet
comfortable accommodations. Facilities consist of travel trailers
provided with electricity, propane stove, and refrig- eration, a
one-person bunk house, and tent camping. Two Internet-enabled
community computers are available and a fairly reliable Wi-Fi
signal for those possessing laptops. If what you've read
intrigues you, don't hesitate to reach out to us for a chat and
possibly arrange a stay. We're accepting volunteers during all
seasons. Please call "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact

subscribers."

furnished one bedroom house with all utilities and internet
provided. Some farm animal experience is desired but we are
willing to train the right applicant. Must have the ability to
work outdoors and pass a background check. We have a six month
minimum commitment. We seek a ministry-minded individual with a
desire to share the love of God to young people through the small
farm and garden experience. Visit us at: "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Thank you! When I emailed The Caretaker Gazette about my
caretaker-wanted ad, I was pleased to obtain a very polite,
professional, and helpful answer to my advertising questions. I
was even more pleased with the responses I received within 24
hours of your email broadcast. I will be sure to tell the other
homeowners here about the great applicants they can expect when
they advertise for help in your publication. L. A. Hilo, HI
Hi Loren, thanks for spreading the good word about the Gazette to
your neighbors there. Please ask any of them to contact us if we
can help them with any advertising questions.
Hi Gary and Gazette crew! Long-time subscriber here. I just
discovered your Pinterest page and have to tell you what fun it
is to see all the beautiful photos of some of the places you list
in the Gazette! Thanks to you for all you do. Will renew again
when my subscription is up. B.W., Iowa City, IA
Hi Bonnie, thanks for your nice message. It's nice to read that
you've found our Pinterest page at www.pinterest.com/housesitter
and enjoy the photos. Everyone seems to have a favorite social
media site so for those who don't use Pinterest, we can also be
found on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Google+
Hi Gary, can you write something in your next issue about
employers not responding and/or at least confirming that they
have received your interest letter and resume. I spend a lot of
time putting in a thoughtful letter of interest and time doing
research on these positions and feel that the least people can do
is simply respond that they received your email and/or that the
position has been filled. I realize the volume of emails received
may be high, but a simple standard reply would be appreciated. S.
C. Denver, CO
Hi Shannon, we have sometimes heard this from other subscribers.
When we accept ads for publication in the Gazette, we stress to
every advertiser to please have the courtesy to respond to
everyone who answers their ad - even if the position has been
filled. In the case of the Situations Wanted ads, even if the
person has found a position already we encourage them to tell
those who offer them a position that they have already accepted
another position. Despite this, there are still advertisers who
do not respond. Unfortunately, although we can't control when and
how advertisers respond, we will still continue to ask all
advertisers to respond to people answering their Gazette ad.
Dear Gary, thank you for your suggestion about placing a
Situations-Wanted ad in your newsletter. I just hadn't had much
luck at all finding a position in the area I wanted to return to
but after running an ad talking about what I could offer a
property owner I received several offers from property owners who
could use my services! Thank you again and I'll be in touch to
let you know how it all goes. M. Y., Berkeley, CA
Hi Margaret, congratulations on finding a position! I'm always
glad to read about subscribers who've successfully found
positions via the Gazette. I try to emphasize that the most
successful Situations-Wanted ads, like yours, describe what a
prospective caretaker/housesitter can offer a property owner.
Best of luck on your new adventure and I look forward to hearing
about your experience.

some help. We are a half a million acre sheep and cattle station
with tourism in the Flinders Ranges. We are central to most
exciting places in the Flinders and most places are within an
hour and a half drive. We are looking for people to come and give
us a hand with gardening and lawn keeping, maintenance, handy
man, may even get out to the paddocks, cooking and cleaning. We
have a flow of tourists but we are not a big operation as we
prefer to keep it on a level where we get to spend time with our
tourists and share dinners and drinks and things with them also.

CARETAKER NEEDED for holiday rentals in a remote location -
Portland Roads, Far North Queensland. You can check our website
at "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact information for these ads
is available only to Gazette subscribers." to learn more. This
would be suitable ideally to a self-funded couple who enjoy the
wilderness and associating with a variety of environmental
people. While the job does enjoy free rent and commission,
because of the small numbers of visitors, the amount in total is
not sufficient to sustain a living. The location is very remote
and in the Tropics. These factors should be seriously taken into
account by any applicant. Interested persons should email

WE ARE LOOKING FOR HOUSESITTERS to mind our house in Robe, on the
southeastern Limestone Coast of South Australia, and two cats
from September 30 to October 27. We live in a comfortable three
bedroomed home with an open living/dining/kitchen area that looks
out onto a river and lake. There is a very small garden to be
maintained. Our house is a two minute walk from Long Beach and a
20 minute cliff walk into Robe itself. We have solar panels and a
water tank as our attempt at being environmentally conscious. A
free-standing wood fire and reverse-cycle keep the whole house
warm and cozy in the cooler part of the year. There's a covered
patio area and a small back lawn and garden and the whole of this
area has a 'zapper' fence around it which keeps our cats in and
other cats out. There are no houses opposite or directly behind
and only one neighbor along the side (and she's seldom there).
The lake opposite the house attracts all types of water birds. If
you're lucky, you'll see pelicans soaring in. Other bird life is
on view all the time. Robe is an historic town with lovely old
buildings and fantastic beaches as well as a rugged coast line.
The town is very well catered for in terms of restaurants,
boutique shops, supermarket and it even has its own small cinema.
Though there is no public transport or taxi, everything is within
walking distance. Please email Marion at "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

AUSTRIA
WE ARE LOOKING FOR PEOPLE to help run and entertain our guests at
a Ski Lodge, a sometimes lively but always friendly Alpine
backpackers lodge. We are located in the Austrian Alps amongst
some very picturesque scenery. We are about 45 minutes from
Innsbruck and 90 minutes from Munich. In return for board and
accommodation, helpers will be involved with turning over and
cleaning rooms as well as bar work and helping out with BBQ's,
when required in the evening. This will be through October
initially but also with the possibility of staying on for the
winter ski season where the slopes are a two minute walk from our
front door as well as all the expected Après that is
synonymous with skiing in Austria! In summer, guests like to go
hiking, paragliding, swimming, mountain biking as well as skiing
and snowboarding on the Glacier. There will be ample opportunity
do this and this would also particularly suit a skier or
snowboarder who may be required, if they so wish, to take guests
to the glacier and enjoy the snow with them for the day. The
Wildschönau Valley, where we are located has much to offer
including all its adventure activities. A work day is typically
three to four hours long and we do our upmost to ensure those
with us are well looked after and happy as we firmly believe this
adds to the atmosphere or our Lodge. Banter is always encouraged
for a lively atmosphere particularly in the bar during the
evening. To this end we certainly encourage helpers to mingle
with guests. They are backpackers from all over the world and
most likely will have much in common with yourselves and travel
stories to share. We like to think of ourselves as very fun,
approachable and friendly and it is important that you buy into
this. We look forward to welcoming you! Please call James at

COLORADO
LABOR TRADE FOR ROOM AND BOARD SITUATION. Greenhouse plantings
and gardens are the horticultural features, but the conservatory
is also a music school. The design and construction of unique
growing spaces is a primary activity of the host, a structural
artist. People with an interest in helping to build unique
creations are especially encouraged to apply. As the conservatory
is also an active guest house, much assistance with domestic
duties is also appreciated. The local amenities are outstanding,
including a very nice Library just one block away with a fabulous
swimming hole in the river right next to it. The local college is
a block in the other direction, offering a host of interesting
classes including sustainability studies, at astonishingly low
tuition rates. There are hot springs and bike trails, a free
local bus service, and nature trails practically just outside the
door. It is very much a wholesome family atmosphere, with
impressionable children, so a healthy lifestyle and positive role
modeling are assiduously practiced. Therefore only persons
willing to eschew all intoxicants, (including tobacco), can be
considered for hosting. The current purely creative endeavor is
the creation of massive, deep toned chimes from large sections of
iron pipe. Most of the design of wind activated ringers,
suspension, and finishing are now solved, the tuning process
remains the final challenge. We are also producing a beehive
based on the regular pentagon, for sale at the farmers market.

GERMANY
WE ARE LOOKING FOR HELPERS in Wetten to work in our large garden
(cutting grass, planting/harvesting vegetables, weeding etc.). We
are also looking for a helper who has experience with marketing
and who can speak both German and English. The World House is a
former monastery which we have turned into a

work is ongoing. Helpers should be optimistic, work well
unsupervised and on their own initiative, and be up for a
challenge. Though we will consider all applications we do prefer
helpers who like to stay for months rather than weeks. We also
take it in turns to cook for the group. You don't need to be a
good cook, just keep it simple and be willing to try. The
environment is green. The air is clear. We are less than one km
outside the nearest village and about three km away from the
nearest town so if you like peace and quiet you will like it
here. The city of Dusseldorf is about an hour away by train and
the Dutch border is about 20 km away. The international Airport
Weeze is 15 km away. Helpers will get a private room. We have
television in a common area and Wi-Fi in most of the house. It is
five hours work a day, five days a week in exchange for food and

HAWAII
FARM HELP needed. Our farm is located on one of the most
beautiful parts of the Big Island, just a few miles from ocean
access for swimming and snorkeling and important Hawaiian
historical sites. At an altitude of 1,500 ft, we have cool nights
and ocean views surrounded by lush tropical woods. We are in the
process of restoring our five acre macadamia and fruit farm to
production. This currently involves clearing and weed eating the
overgrown areas and removing vines from macnut and fruit trees.
It is very rewarding work. There is some macnut and fruit picking
that also needs to be done. We are also in the process of
restoring the farm house which means conditions rather like
indoor camping with very limited access to electricity and
outdoor showers. We ask approximately 20 hours a week work. We
provide occasional meals and basic food stables but you will need
to be able to provide much of your own food. Some fruit is ready
to be enjoyed by our helpers. Non-smokers and no drug users only.
We also run a small bakery operation with several weekly farmers
markets for additional work opportunities for those who like that
experience. This takes us half way around the Big Island each
week so we are able to help transport you to other noteworthy
portions of our amazing island. For more info, please email

CARETAKER PROFILE
On the beach in Mexico: Mitchell and Patty
Date of Birth: October, 1966
Interests: Hiking, traveling, gardening, home projects, reading,
and yoga
Quote: "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and
narrow-mindedness." - Mark Twain
Mitchell and the book 'A Gifted Man' by Joseph the homeowner.
We were on San Juan Island, Washington where we had just finished
a week-long caretaking job at a small cabin resort when we saw
The Caretaker Gazette ad for the position in Barra de Potosi,
Mexico. We immediately thought this would be a perfect fit,
especially since we had been in the Pacific Northwest for a
couple of months and were craving sunny warm weather. Almost
immediately, we responded to the ad with high hopes. Just before
we left for a camping trip on Orcas Island, the homeowner in
Barra (Franca) replied to our email asking for a recent picture
of me and Patty which we sent off right away. On Orcas we spent
another day or two trading emails back and forth with Franca. The
cell reception on Orcas was not good so I found myself standing
on picnic tables, on top of rocks, or anything else that might
improve the chance of an email getting through.
After a couple of days, Franca informed us we were chosen to take
the position with the caveat that we could get there within two
weeks at the most ("the sooner the better"). We packed up our
truck camper and raced to catch the next ferry back to San Juan
Island where we left some of our things, got all packed up and
the next day were on our way, heading south for Barra, some three
thousand miles away. Eight days later we arrived having traveled
some 1,500 miles in the US and another 1,500 or so in Mexico.
When we arrived at El Pez Enamorado, we walked around the
property, looking at the beach, beautiful plants and outside
showers (yes, more than one!) and just couldn't believe our luck.
The house was just a few feet from the ocean. Slowly, the reality
that we hadn't a clue started setting in...with no one there to
show us what to do or how things worked. We had a hand drawn
diagram of the property with locations for breakers, water
shutoff valves, etc., but that first week or two was a struggle.
We had both come down with a stomach bug picked up somewhere on
the drive to Barra de Potosi. On top of that, it was hot when we
got there. Really Hot! In a few short days, we had come from 20
degree sleeping bag weather to long nights in the eighties with
high humidity and even hotter days. Between being sick, the heat
and the water problems, we were questioning our decision to go
there. But, we started feeling better shortly and were getting
acclimated to the weather. We met the former caretakers and they
gave us tips about various things in the house. We started to
meet people in the village and began taking Spanish classes. The
property was wild and untamed when we arrived but little by
little, we got it under control which allowed us to simply
maintain from that point forward. We figured out ways to work
around the quirks of the two houses and how to live happily with
scorpions (we only found dead ones), mice/rats, lizards, water
bugs, roaches, snakes, bats, ants, wasps, wild dogs, and all the
other treats a tropical environment offers. We bought hammocks to
relax in, and hung them in coconut trees on the beach. In
Zihautanejo, we found the Mercado Municipal where we got fresh
fruits and vegetables for next to nothing and inexpensive meat
and seafood. Back at the house several vendors came by selling
various items: water and fresh baked bread daily, produce, and
tamales and ice cream. In the village of Barra de Potosi there
were small stores that sold anything else we might need as well
as a dozen or so small restaurants. Most days we walked on the
beach in the morning and then spent a couple of hours working in
the yard. Afterwards we worked on Spanish, went to class, or got
together later with people we'd met there. The Internet we had is
a 3G USB stick (basically a cell connection) so we didn't spend
much time online.
In December, our son Matthew came for a week's visit, which
corresponded with the celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe. On
the night Matthew arrived, we walked down to the village and
watched as a procession of the entire village, led by a group of
girls dancing in costume who stopped to offer a blessing on each
house. The following morning, all of the village pangas (fishing
boats) came together to receive a blessing from the village
priest. As we prepared to leave Casa del Pez, it sometimes felt
like we'd been there longer than three months but other times it
felt like we just got there. Days move slowly there, like
everything else...languid in the heat and humidity, pausing to
rest in the afternoon and then melting with the evening sunset.
But somehow, the weeks seemed to pile up on top of each other at
an ever quickening pace.
There were many things we knew we would miss when we left there
and many we took for granted. The people of course - but we
expect one day to cross paths again there or elsewhere with many
of our new friends. Of course we also miss our morning walks on
the beach, the ocean, the sun and sand, lying in the hammocks,
shopping at the central market, and living a slow paced life.
Nevertheless, with our time almost up, we awaited the arrival of
the new caretakers from Alaska. We gave them a brief orientation
and then headed north towards home.

MOROCCO
HELP NEEDED. This is a new digital artists' residency in
Marrakesh, Morocco. It seeks to provide a space for digital
artists of all varieties to live and work in Marrakech while
creating their works. Our residence is in a beautiful house,

NEVADA
RANCH CARETAKER NEEDED. The ranch is located 105 miles northeast
of Las Vegas. It is a beautiful 150 acre ranch. I am looking for
a full-time caretaker of the facility. There is a place to live
with full utilities. The caretaker must be a handyman. For more
info, please fax "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact information
for these ads is available only to Gazette subscribers."
HELP NEEDED. For the past twelve years I have enjoyed cultivating
a small experimental vegetable, fruit and nut orchard here in the
low desert of Nevada. I have a 1,200 sq ft custom home that was
built in 2012. It is in a rural area. I have a three bedroom home
with two bathrooms. The bedrooms are with AC/Wi-Fi and of course,
washer and dryer. I like to have women as helpers as they really
like housekeeping chores and do a super job outside with all the
garden/orchard chores. I would enjoy having help in the orchard
and/or housekeeping (cleaning) activities for at least four hours
(depending on the day's project) each day. Making dinner and
clean up is expected, although I do like to cook some dinners. If
a helper wishes to work for three days and then have the next day
off (or maybe another) to go hiking and exploring with me, then I
am completely open to that kind of a schedule. Work hours and
days off are really negotiable. I love to explore the desert and
you are welcome on days off to go explore with me. I do have five
young free roaming chickens in the orchard now. I built my large
greenhouse myself and always need seasonal help with it. Besides
the orchard with some 90 trees, I do need help with my pond
oasis, as there is a lot of work out there. We are located just
an hour away from the famous Death Valley National Park and about
45 minutes from the Amargosa Date Farm which offers a lifetime of
hiking and exploring in canyons/abandoned mines/and riparian
corridor ecosystems. Hope to hear from you in the future and hope
I can help you learn about the Lower Desert environs and you can
help me with my inside and outside chores and be my happy
companion on your days off. Please write "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

THAILAND
WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER(S) (couples and groups
also welcome) to work at our dog centre in Bang Saphan, Thailand
for one year (we will still accept people for shorter stays of
course). We are a small dog rescue centre which cares for 50 plus
dogs at our centre and around fifty more at a local temple. We
aim to have these dogs adopted within months of their arrival
unless they have medical problems, in which case we would keep
them at the centre and care for them. We also neuter and treat
local street dogs. You would be given your own accommodation
(this is only available if you can commit for more than six
months) for a year in exchange for helping us in our effort to
have all of our dogs adopted within the year and eventually close
the centre. Your day-to-day work will include helping with
adoptions (spreading awareness), treating and caring for the dogs
(feeding, cleaning, etc), helping with rescues and fundraising.
Headrock Dogs Rescue will still exist once the centre dogs have
been adopted but we will only treat and care for the dogs at the
temple and on the street beyond this point. Bang Saphan is a well
hidden secret and we want to keep it that way except for
volunteers who appreciate the natural beauty of Thailand and a
peaceful harmonious place to stay that makes you think of
paradise. If you would like to come and volunteer with us we will
help you organize your trip. We can arrange transportation to the
area, advise you on flights, supply information about where to
eat and what is good for trips, etc. We don't charge you for
coming to volunteer; we just appreciate your help. Please read
the thoughts of past volunteers at "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note:

UTAH
HELP NEEDED in Moab. I'm a 53-year-old female living in a lovely
small straw bale home with a large organic garden at the end of a
quiet cul de sac. I have a variety of gardening/landscaping/home
maintenance projects I'd love to have help in exchange for meals
and accommodations. In late June - late September there is
ongoing weeding; harvesting from the garden; help with canning
and freezing produce. In September and October, I need help with
landscaping the front yard, including some planting, laying down
a weed barrier and drip irrigation. Then in October and early
November, I need help with garden cleanup, and winterizing. I
love sharing my lovely home this way, and appreciate the help
more than I can say. I love hanging out with my guests, as my
schedule allows, and talking about life, sharing meals, coffee,
playing chess - whatever. Also, I am more than happy to show you
some of my favorite hikes. Love hearing different philosophies
and ideas, and stories about my guests' travels. Someday I'll be
traveling again, but for now I'm content to host. You can visit
my website "XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Note: Contact information for
these ads is available only to Gazette subscribers." to get a
sense of who I am and what's important to me. I'm a passionate
cook with strong vegetarian leanings and am happy to provide
accommodations and meals in exchange for two to four hours work
per day, depending on what needs to be done. I've been gardening
for over 20 years and am happy to share what I know. Also happy
to share my knowledge in the kitchen. I can accommodate single
persons or couples. A few rules: no pets please. No smoking or
drugs. Accommodations are a semi-private screened area with a
twin bed, in the main living area, for a single person. Couples
have a private room with double bed. Shared bath in either case.
My house is small, but cozy and comfortable. The patio and garden
are lovely places to hang out. I can offer very limited internet
access in my home - there are numerous places in town to access
it though. Moab is a town of around 10,000, a community of lots
of creative, intelligent, and compassionate folks. The scenery is
spectacular, with red-rock cliffs and canyons everywhere. There
are endless things to do here - hiking, climbing, biking,
rafting, jeeping, etc. My house is five minutes from town and 15
minutes from Arches National Park. And my home/garden/patio is a
lovely oasis for hanging out, if that's your preference. Come
visit - I'm sure we'll have fun! Please email

VIETNAM
WE NEED AN ENGLISH TEACHER for the duration of one to six months.
This is a nonprofit that provides training and job placement for
unemployed and rural women in the nearby villages. We make
beautiful souvenirs and all profits go back to help more people
in need. Our craft school in Vinh Long Province, Southern
Vietnam, is also a place to host local and foreign tourists and
visitors who want to learn more about craft making and the
Vietnamese culture. The school is surrounded by a relaxing
garden, lotus ponds and native plants, with the Mekong River
going by the front yard. It is a great place for the guests to
chill out and learn about life in the Mekong Delta. Since the
team in our craft school, including the artisans who are rural
disadvantaged women, barely speak English, we are looking for
someone to be based here to teach the team English and how to
welcome the tourists. Or if the person knows bag and art design,
they can teach the artisans new designs. Since we are a
nonprofit, where all the profits we earn go back to support more
people in need, we are not able to provide for housing/food
stipend. Yet we are happy to help the volunteers to find housing.

LONG-TERM HOUSESITTING POSITION AVAILABLE in rural Virginia. We
require a single, couple or family to live in our family's estate
just to provide a "security presence". Other staff, who work on
the property year-round, will be on the property periodically.
You can relax, work or go to school, your time is essentially
your own. The family is here in the summer for a short time
period and a few other holiday weeks per year but do not live in
the house where you will live. All expenses such as heat, water,
electric etc. are paid by the family but you will need your own
car for yourself. The family will ask you to report on the status
of the home, such as a leak, or a problem that needs attention.
There are no pets on the property and the housesitter cannot have
any pets on the property. Believe it or not, you will actually be
paid for this job with a very reasonable stipend of about $12,000
annually. Security and background checks will be conducted.
Please email a resume(s) and references - all in one email
message to caretakergazette@gmail.com Please include the words
"Rural Virginia Housesitter Assignment" in the subject line for
screening. Thank you.
