We need friendly volunteers to help with reception, cleaning

Volunteers will get a bed in a shared dorm, free breakfast, and

fruit and vegetable market, and a supermarket just around the
corner from us. Hours of work may vary depending on how many
volunteers we have or how many guests are in the hostel. But
always we will make sure you have plenty of time to relax and
enjoy yourself! There are lots of beautiful beaches in the area
to explore including the famous Gjipe beach. Himara also has nice
bars and seafood restaurants for you to enjoy. If you’re in the
area, please call XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX for more information.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Wow, I am impressed at the quality of responses I had on my
Help-Wanted listing. In one day after you emailed my ad, I had
six responses. We have filled the position, thanks to you and
your publication. Please let everyone know that my position is
now filled. Thank you very much, Keith J., Las Cruces, NM

Thanks for the update Keith. Glad to see how well Gazette
advertising still works in this record low unemployment market
that we’re currently in.

Hi Gary and Thank you! Through your Caretaker Gazette, I have
once again found another great caretaking job! This time on a
“gentleman’s” ranch vacation property in a beautiful
location! I am going to keep my subscription current in case I
find something in my “dream” location after this new
caretaking position ends. Thanks to you and your Gazette for
giving us connections and jobs that allow us to live our dreams
in great locations! Ken D., Boise, ID

Ken, congratulations on finding another caretaking position
via the Gazette. It sounds like the caretaker position on a
vacation ranch property will provide you with some great
experiences that you can eventually use to help you find a future
position in your “dream” location.

Gary, I’ve had almost one dozen response all because of the
situation wanted ad I placed in your Gazette. Almost all of them
have potential and seem like great opportunities. Thank you to
you and your publication for the opportunity to pursue a
caretaking career. And thanks to you I am now headed for a
caretaking position on the Big Island of Hawaii! I am looking
forward to this and thank you again, Gary! Bev T., Pittsburgh,
PA

Bev, thank you for your message. I am happy to read that your
situation wanted ad resulted in some great responses and to a
caretaker position in Hawaii! Please let us know how things work
out for you.

Hi Gary, I wanted to email you and let you know what a great
resource your Caretaker Gazette has been to me. I really
appreciate that you took the time to help me rewrite my email
broadcast so I would attract the best candidates for my unique
Alaska property. My broadcast went out late on Monday night and
the next day I woke up to find several great responses from very
qualified and interested caretakers! I am expecting a couple to
come and interview in person. If all goes well, I’ll fly them
out to Alaska to tour my property and hopefully work out a
contract we are all happy with. Will T., Seattle, WA

Will, it’s always great to read that an email broadcast
worked out well for both property owners and caretakers! I know
you were concerned about leaving your Alaska vacation home
unattended given that you live in Seattle and can’t get back
regularly to check on it. I’m sure your property will now be in
good hands. Thanks for taking the time to write and thank us.

We have new mailing and email addresses so we need to update our
information with you. As you can see we have taken a position in
Florida. In the very first issue of the Gazette that we received
we saw an ad that interested us so we responded. After several
conversations with the property owner here we are! We don’t
want to miss any issues or updates from your Gazette so please
let us know how to update our info. Thank you for making this
caretaker job available to us. Cathy R. and Jason J., Worcester,
MA

Cathy and Jason, thanks for your email. I’m glad to hear
that you found a position so quickly! You can log into your
account and make your own email/mailing address changes
anytime.

FARM HELP needed. Our farm is situated close to a town called
Templemore, in County Tipperary, in the heart of the Golden Vale;
an area of rolling pastureland in the civil province of Munster,
in southern Ireland. Close to our farm lies the famous Devil’s
Bit mountain. According to local legend, the mountain got its
name because the devil took a bite out of it, leaving a small gap
in the mountain between one outcrop of rock (known as the Rock)
and another small plateau. The bite the devil allegedly took made
this gap and the legend suggests that the devil broke his teeth
taking this bite and spat the Rock of Cashel to where it now
stands. We are also situated in close proximity to a range of
popular tourist attractions like Holycross Abbey, The Galtee
Mountains, Cahir Castle, Mitchelstown Calves and The Glen of
Aherlow, to name just a few. On the farm, we have many horses
which we exercise daily. We also host a number of suckler cows,
sheep and dogs on our farm. Daily duties include feeding the
horses, walk outs, cleaning stables, bedding with fresh straw,
paper and/or wood shavings as required and ensuring that the
horses are healthy. Feeding and caring for the livestock
including sheep and cows are other important tasks on the farm
especially during the winter months and in the lead up to calving
and lambing seasons in the spring. Once calved, our cows and
calves enjoy access to pasture, until the calves become big
enough to be weaned from their mothers in the late autumn months.
Great care is also required for the ewes and their new born
lambs, to ensure they are healthy and well fed during the harsh
winter months. Accommodation and access to a bathroom is
available for two guests. All meals will be included, if desired.
We are looking for someone to help out on the farm and also to
help with general household chores. On your time off, you can
avail yourself of the local tennis club, golf club, mountain
trails/trekking, horse riding or maybe just taking time to
explore the local scenery. Airport, bus or train pickup to
Shannon or Dublin may be arranged. Please call

Living Rent-Free in Normandy: Rebecca Ivie

Rebecca on a visit to Saint Malo

Caretaking is relatively new to me. I started a few years ago
doing house and pet-sitting near my home-base in Northwest
Washington state. After a few short term house-sits, friends told
friends that I was available and some jobs in beautiful areas
including the San Juan Islands and California came about.
I grew up in the Bay Area of Northern California. We had horses
and dogs and a cat and a lot of oak and olive trees. I went to UC
Santa Cruz and graduated with a combined Art/Art History degree.
That summer I moved to Seattle, where I lived for five years. I
raised my children in a small town north of Seattle. While my
kids were growing up, I worked part-time jobs as a Brightworker
(boat varnishing), librarian and soccer coach. I also ran a small
landscaping business for about six years, and most recently,
spent 15 years as a Retail Manager. My hobbies include hiking in
the local forestlands, reading a lot, writing, gardening and clay
sculpture.
I began subscribing to The Caretaker Gazette a few years ago. I
had raised my children, (they are all in their late 20s now) and
was ready for something new. A close friend recommended I look
for caretaking work to get a fresh perspective, a change of
scene. Over the next few years, there were jobs that almost
happened. Memorable ones included Costa Rica, Wyoming and New
Mexico. Life intervened a few times, making my leaving
impossible; one time I chickened out (there were snakes). Another
time, after agreeing to a three month stay in another state,
telling all of my friends, quitting my job and making plans, the
owner abruptly changed her mind and really pulled the rug out
from under me.
My advice to anyone looking for this type of work is to do your
homework; ask to speak to former caretakers if possible. I was in
touch with a former caretaker whose advice and understanding were
crucial to my experience in France. I now consider her a friend.
Ask for references. If something goes wrong, it’s not like you
can turn someone in to the Caretaker Police. You are trusting
someone you don’t know to be honest and forthright. The good
news is, most people are.
One of the jobs I applied for in late winter of 2018 was for a
garden caretaking position in rural France. I heard back from the
owners right away. We exchanged a few emails and then they chose
someone else. I forgot all about it. Then, in April of 2019, I
got an email from these same people in France asking if I was
interested in the job for the summer. I had two jobs at the time
and hadn’t been actively looking for caretaking jobs, but it
only took me a few minutes to know that I would be going to
France.
How many times in a life do you get a chance for an experience
like this?
When I told people I was going to France, they invariably asked
“How did you find out about this job?” I told them all about
The Caretaker Gazette.
The job was in Normandy, for three months, taking care of a
Chateau “potager”, or kitchen garden for 20 - 25 hours per
week in exchange for a two bedroom, one bath apartment in the
Chateau. Some family dinners and fresh vegetables and fruit from
the garden were included. The Chateau, built in 1852, sits on 50
acres of forest with large grass lawns around the house. I was
only responsible for the potager, which was one acre including
six large raised beds with all kinds of vegetables, a 60-foot row
of heirloom tomatoes, fruit trees, olive trees, eight very
productive grapevines on a large trellis, some gravel areas and
grass as well as a “Gardener’s Cottage” where tools were
stored and seeds started. It was a lot to take care of,
especially in the height of summer when watering, sometimes twice
a day was necessary. The water system there was very antiquated
and a challenge to use. It was a relief when the hot days ended
and the rains came. Of course, with the rain came more mowing. I
watered, mowed the grass, weeded, planted fall and overwinter
vegetables and harvested. There were a million tomatoes and more
grapes and zucchini (courgette, in French) than we could eat. In
September there were a few cold days and then a warm Indian
Summer. The climate in Normandy is much like where I live in the
Pacific Northwest. The plant hardiness zone is the same, Zone 8,
so I was familiar with many of the plants there as well as the
weeds.
The chateau is family home run as a business by the Expat
owners, one being a cookbook author who takes visiting clients on
tours of the surrounding area, teaches French cuisine and cooks
gourmet meals.
A forty-minute bus ride from the chateau is Rouen. It’s a
wonderful city - winding cobblestone streets with colorful
half-timber buildings, the Seine River, well-curated museums,
thriving outdoor markets of French antiques or Brocante and
amazing food. If you have a chance, go. It is a mini Paris,
friendly and knowable and close to the beautiful west coast of
France.

The Chateau, built in 1852

View of the Potager, or kitchen garden

I was able to get to Paris, if I made the best bus and train
connections, by 10 am. This was a rare opportunity to have access
to one of the great cities of the world and I took full advantage
of that. I spent about 15 days in Paris, riding the Metro,
visiting museums, eating all kinds of food and just walking for
hours. I don’t think I would ever get tired of it.
I have a deep, lifelong interest in Art and Art History, so I
was constantly inspired by what I saw in museums and on trips in
and around Normandy. I have always loved the Impressionists, and
Normandy is where that movement began. Eugene Boudin influenced
Claude Monet and from Monet… well, Impressionism followed.
Monet’s former home and now a museum, Giverny is touristy, but
worth it to someone who loves painting. Monet is also famous for
painting the Rouen Cathedral more than 30 times and is much
celebrated there. I felt like the landscape was a familiar old
friend. Honfleur, Etretat, Dieppe, Deauville… all along the
Normandy coast, these were landscapes weirdly familiar to me
because of the paintings I had known since I was in school. My
favorite museum is Musee d’Orsay in Paris. They have a huge
collection of Impressionist work and more sculpture than most big
museums.
This past summer was the 75th anniversary of D-day and the
Battle of Normandy. I was lucky to meet a U.S. expat there,
through the chateau owners, who is one of the last living
survivors at Normandy. He has lived in France for over 50 years.
His stories about the Nazis occupying the Chateau and other
places nearby and about trading his cigarettes for food during
the war brought that time and place to life for me. He’s 93,
still very active, has never smoked and still plays a mean game
of Horseshoes.
The town nearest the Chateau is a modest, mostly farming
community of 3,500 people. It was a 2.5-mile walk to town and I
walked that route many times. Rolling hills of corn and turnips
and hay dominated the fields. I saw three types of cows, sheep,
horses and one favorite house where an old woman had a menagerie
of ducks, chickens, one turkey, three small dogs and a litter of
kittens all in the same messy yard surrounding her historic
French farmhouse. There were two Boulangeries in town that made
incredible bread and patisserie. I think I tried it all. Monday
farmers markets saw the town square filled with vendors selling
fish, pastries, vegetables, handmade sausage, basic clothing
items, plants and sometimes furniture. While I was living there,
a new, fancy grocery store opened up, (there were already three
grocery stores) and people were incredibly excited about it. It
should come as no surprise that food and access to food is a big
deal there. Interesting fact: I never saw one obese person the
whole time I was in France.
A lot of people ask me about the language and how I dealt with
that. I took French in high school and tried to study as much as
I could before I left. English was spoken at the Chateau, so I
didn’t learn any French there. Many people speak English in
France; bus drivers, store clerks, but interestingly, not the
doctor I visited when I got sick.
I did have to use my French at times. This usually ended up
being a humorous and fun experience where we used our limited
vocabularies, hands and some form of Franglaise to understand
each other. I enjoyed it all, and I did improve, especially in my
ability to read French. I think when you are surrounded by a
language, it seeps into you. Of course, there were times when I
had no idea what someone was saying to me. Then a heartfelt,
“Pardon, je suis Anglaise” would usually do the trick.
Because my commitment was 20 - 25 hours per week, I did have
plenty of time for travel. I had trips to Paris where I
reconnected with an old childhood friend as well as trips to the
coast. We escaped a heatwave by going to Blondville-sur-mer, one
of the most beautiful old-timey beach communities I have ever
seen. Saint-Malo, a medieval walled city on the southern coast,
was also a highlight. If you have read the novel, “All the
Light You Cannot See”, it was set there and in Paris.
I also spent time just hanging out. The chateau was incredibly
quiet and peaceful much of the time. I was able to make some
progress on a writing project, read a few books, draw, and do two
small sculptures with local clay.
There were challenges along the way: The owners were abroad for
over a month and during that time, I got very ill from ingesting
tainted water. I needed help navigating the French medical
system, which is really quite good, and a very strong antibiotic.
I relied on the kindness of some U.S. expats living nearby, and
some doctor friends consulting in the U.S. It was a tough time -
being alone and sick in a foreign country is not fun. Next time I
go to Europe, I will take more meds with me. I will take
Pepto-Bismol for sure, as it is not available there.
I wish I had taken less gear. I was happy to have my nice garden
clippers, gloves and my favorite tool- a Japanese Hori-Hori
knife, but I could have made do with less clothing. Travel light
if you can. I stayed just under three months, so I didn’t need
to deal with getting a work visa. I’ve heard that can be tricky
in France.
I am hoping to go abroad again soon. I would love to find
something related to Innkeeping or another garden related job in
Europe, especially in the U.K. Meanwhile, I’m home taking care
of my garden, which is a mess after me being gone for three
months. I’m also dreaming a little about what comes next while
reading the new ads in The Caretaker Gazette.
If you have caretaking questions, I am happy to try to answer
them at the email listed above.

ITALY

CARETAKERS NEEDED in 2020 at a family-owned, historical house in
Tuscany. The family has owned the Villa since 1536 and they will
need caretakers between March and October 2020 at the Villa di
Corliano in the Tuscany countryside. The Villa is seven
kilometers from Pisa and 10 kilometers from Lucca, inside a
nature park reserve in the Tuscan countryside, on an old Roman
Road. The Villa’s exterior is decorated with graffiti dating
back to 1500 and which are typical of Florentine Mannerist Art.
Inside the salons of the Villa frescoes by Andrea Boscolo (1592)
and Nicola Matraini (1750) can be admired. We are looking for a
responsible, reliable person who loves historical houses and is
willing to stay in the Villa, carry out some duties in exchange
for free lodging while on holiday in the area. The duties include
staying in the Villa every night from 8pm until 7am. Mornings and
afternoons are completely free and Monday is a full day free. We
want the caretaker to stay a minimum of two months and a maximum
of the tourist visa (three months). Accommodation will be a
single room at the top of a spiral staircase with a kitchenette
(small frig, sink, hot plate and toaster over) in the corner and
a private bathroom with shower. The room has satellite TV and
free Wi-Fi, but no meals are provided. A washing machine is
available for use in the Villa. Duties will include some of the
following: gardening, building, helping with tourists, and art
projects and include light gardening in the early morning or late
evening for a maximum of two hours, check of doors/gate closing
(after 11pm) and sleep in the Villa each night from 8pm until
7am. So basically the caretaker will clean the garden around the
villa, help guests if they need suggestions for where to
eat/visit or to call for a taxi, verify that the doors and gates
are closed before going to bed, and generally keeping an eye on
the place, especially at night. There are also many events at the
Villa, such as weddings, concerts, gala dinners, etc. and the
caretaker helps direct the guests to the designated parking
areas. The main requirement is to sleep inside the Villa for the
overall security of the guests. Your bedroom is upstairs so you
have a good view of the main Villa entrance. The property is
occupied by the working staff and gardeners from 7am until 8pm,
so those hours are totally free for the caretaker. This is a
volunteer/exchange position and no money compensation and no
meals provided, for one person only. This could be a holiday
opportunity if you would like to spend some time in Tuscany (the
Pisa - Lucca area) for cultural tourism connected with nature and
art heritage cities. For more details or inquiries regarding the
Villa volunteer caretaking position, please contact

Hello, I'm Michael, I'm actively seeking a position as a Property

potential to evolve into an expanded role. The position would
consist chiefly of being an on-site presence providing
unparalleled service, i.e. watchful/eagle eye on your high end

care; safeguarding your coveted/prized property. The core
internal duties would be general maintenance/up keep, and

Technically, it falls under the guise of House Sitting/Pet

variety of disparate domestic related capacities rounding out the
overview. I possess a certain jen ne sais quoi replete with
dynamism, worldliness, erudition, sense of elan/grace and

epitomizing "straight laced"/straight arrow with a conservative
sensibility. Open to all geographical locations;
nationally/internationally. As a compensation package I'm seeking
a minimal/negotiable salary with Live-In/Live-On premises either
in main house or Guest House. I can be reached at

AN ALTERNATIVE TO COSTLY MEDICAL INSURANCE
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both
property owners and caretakers/housesitters, have discussed their
healthcare situation and possible insurance options/alternatives
with us. We have dropped our current medical insurance when the
premiums jumped to $2,000 per month with a $12,000 annual
deductible. We switched to $354/month healthcare program for my
wife and I called Medi-Share.
I wanted to send you some information about Medi-Share as I
thought you might be interested in their affordable healthcare.
Like us, you and your family could join their community of
400,000+ who share in each other's medical burdens. Since 1993
more than $4 Billion in medical expenses have been shared and
discounted by Medi-Share members.
With Medi-Share you and your family won't need to worry about
the mandate to purchase health insurance or pay costly penalties
and fees, members are exempt through a special provision in the
Affordable Care Act.

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and
interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005,
was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse
ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a
cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. During the start
of the year 2005, the handwriting on the wall began and the books
closed on this historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then,
became my pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true
happenings during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the
open range while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into
usable cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later
in the other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among
wild cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin’ out in Arizona’s
beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although
unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever
dreamed of being a cowboy, here’s your chance to ride along
with me as your side-kick and saddle pard. You can view an
entertaining introduction with many colored pictures at
lastdkcowboy.com or you can write to me at
lastdkslashcowboy@gmail.com
