LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Dear Gary, I know I'm late in giving you feedback on my ad that
went out in one of your email blasts but I wanted to let you know
what a great resource your Gazette has been for us. There are so
many scams on the web that is difficult to know who to trust.
After checking out The Caretaker Gazette for a couple of months
and speaking to you personally we went ahead and placed an email
ad with you, seeking a caretaker position anywhere on the west
coast (in hopes of moving from the northeast to be closer to our
grandchildren in northern California). Our email blast went out
on a Monday night and by Tuesday morning we woke up to email
messages from people with positions in Washington, Oregon, and
Idaho! After making a quick trip out to southern Oregon to
interview and check out one of the situations, followed by a few
more weeks of working out a contract, we are now living rent-free
on a lovely guest ranch in Oregon which is within a few hours'
drive of our grandchildren who we wanted to be near. My husband
and I are now in better shape than we've been in years due to
being outside, out of a condo in a busy city and back into a home
with a lovely yard in a very beautiful part of the country.
Thanks so much for providing such a wonderful service. You and
your staff have done such a great job at identifying a need and
meeting it. Sincerely yours, Mary Kay L. Arnold, OR
Dear Mary Kay, congratulations on your new position! I'm glad
to read that your email broadcast ad was successful and resulted
in you finding such a nice position near your grandchildren. For
subscribers who are interested in reading more about the process
from placing an email broadcast ad to accepting a position,
please see our current Caretaker Profile on Page 8 of this
issue.
I am interested in receiving training for property caretaking. Do
you know of any schools that provide such training? Thanks in
advance for any info, Elaine Y. New York, NY
Dear Elaine, to our knowledge, and from the feedback we have
received over the decades, the best school that provides that
kind of training is Professional Domestic Institute in Columbus,
Ohio. They offer various courses each year that provide training
in a variety of topics relating to caring for wealthy homes and
property. To contact them, please visit their website at
www.housestaff.net or email carol@housestaff.net or call them at
(614) 565-5043.
Hi Gary, I love your publication and think you provide such a
great service. I've always been a hard copy subscriber but I
found my last position through one of your email broadcasts. I am
not very computer literate but I send and receive email so I
signed up for your broadcasts so I could get the email updates
during the week. I am so glad I did this because that's how I
found my latest caretaker position. It came in through one of
your email updates. Thank you for all you do! Ken L. Boston, MA
Hi Ken, I'm glad you were able to find your current position
through one of our email broadcasts. We still receive new ads
every day, and more and more advertisers want to get their ad out
to our subscribers as quickly as possible. A lot of our
subscribers still enjoy receiving the print issues of the Gazette
but they also have signed up to receive our email broadcasts.
Many of our subscribers who spend a lot of time on the road
(RVers, snowbirds and world travelers) appreciate being able to
receive and access new listings as they travel. In addition to
property owners looking for housesitters and caretakers via our
email broadcasts, we also have subscribers who are looking for
positions as housesitters and caretakers by advertising a
Situations Wanted ad in our email broadcasts. If you decide to
place your own ad, please visit www.caretaker.org and click on

FREE RENT available for dog professionals (couple only) in
Encino. We are a non-profit small dog rescue in search for a
responsible and stable live-in couple, with at least one person
who has extensive experience as either a vet-tech, dog trainer,
or very experienced dog handler. A groomer may also be
considered. Must know how to approach and handle timid,
frightened, shy, and sometimes aggressive dogs. This arrangement
would be an exchange of a one bedroom unit on a property that
also houses the organization's office headquarters for your time
and care for our dogs. Most of our dogs are under 20 pounds and
we are not focused on one specific breed. Although you must love
dogs, you may not have your own pet as you will be required to
care for approximately 10 dogs on the property. There is already
a stray cat on the property that relies on us for food and water,
and companionship. Responsibilities will include general
caretaking of the property, including cleaning, maintenance of
yard and office headquarters, daily dog care such as feeding,
medicating, and exercising, keeping the property tidy and
presentable while ensuring noise level is kept to a minimum, and
showing dogs to potential adopters and fosters by appointment
when needed. You must be comfortable with other employees and
volunteers to be on the property during the daytime hours, and
you must be comfortable with dogs in your living quarters when
necessary. We are not looking for someone who simply needs free
rent. We are looking for someone who is passionate about dogs and
rescuing who doesn't mind being surrounded by dogs all day long.
Ideally, one of you would be a Vet Tech, trainer, or similar
dog-professional while the other may have a part-time day-job.
This means that if you go out at night to dinner and a movie, you
must enlist a volunteer for the hours that you are gone if
available, as long as you never leave the property unattended
when our staff is not there. The property is clean, safe, and
basic. It has approximately 700 sq. ft. tile floors, laundry,
stove, refrigerator, and plenty of outdoor space, not all of
which will be used for the dogs, air-conditioning room and plenty
of daylight. Absolutely no smoking, marijuana use, or drug use of
any kind. A refundable security deposit of $1,000 is required.
Please send us your qualifications and why you feel that you are
the right caretakers to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX and please be

Back in 2008, I was tired of the "City Life." I had been a
long-time journalist in New York City, came out to San Francisco
in 2002, and finally decided that what I really wanted to do was
to help caretake properties throughout the world. Yes, there were
websites like Craigslist, I suppose, but in the end, I wanted to
find the resource that would reach the property owners that I
most wanted to work for and in the areas that seemed most
interesting and lovely.
To that end, somehow, I came across the great website, The
Caretaker Gazette. The Gazette had begun doing what they called
an "email broadcast," where you could put your own ad, tailoring
it to the specifics of the kinds of properties or areas you might
want to caretake, etc. So, I bit the bullet, and wrote up my own
ad, which looked like this:
SITUATIONS-WANTED AD:
Hello, Homeowners - I am a caring and responsible 40-year-old,
female yoga teacher and Feng Shui practitioner, Harvard graduate,
and holistic writer, and am looking to begin housesitting on
January 8th (or thereabouts) of next year. I am a seasoned
experienced caretaker and dog sitter, having house-sat for
clients and friends in Malibu, Topanga Canyon, Sausalito and
Fairfax, California. I absolutely love dogs and am happy to take
care of any pets, plants, etc. Sadly, am allergic to cats. I am
just finishing up a housesitting gig over the holidays, so will
be available in the beginning of the New Year. I am also a
classically trained pianist, so if you have a piano, so much the
better! Ideally looking for a 3 - 12 month live-in position.
Please feel free to email me or phone me directly. I am open to
any opportunity in the U.S. and Hawaii, and would be particularly
interested in living abroad over this next year. I look forward
to hearing from you!
Well, it didn't take long.
Within a week, I had three different requests/offers for a phone
interview for caretaking. One was a spiritual retreat center in
Virginia (a bit far, but it still interested me). The other
didn't seem like the right fit, but the third one was the charm.
I was contacted by one of the owners of the beautiful Blackthorne
Inn, in Inverness, California - and her husband - to see if I
might be willing to make the drive across the Golden Gate Bridge,
continuing along to Point Reyes to meet with them, as they had a
need right away for a live-in caretaker!
I couldn't believe my luck, so I hopped in the car the next day
and began driving towards this beautiful pristine natural
seashore. Point Reyes National Seashore is a 71,028-acre park
preserve located on the Point Reyes Peninsula in Marin County,
California, and was earmarked as a national seashore, maintained
by the US National Park Service as an important nature preserve.
As I drove through the Redwood Forest, and came to a little
corner market. I took a left, drove through this cove of trees
and I had arrived - at the Blackthorne Inn. The beauty and
majesty of this place was breathtaking.
We sat down over coffee, and the owner of the Inn explained that
they needed someone to live onsite right away. We also drove over
to their other magnificent property - the Black Heron Inn - right
on the mesa of Point Reyes - as I would also be asked to drive
over and help with this property occasionally too.
It didn't take me long to say "yes".
I put a lot of my belongings in storage, packed my bags, and
made my way out to live there full-time. I was offered a charming
one bedroom studio "cottage" right beneath the Inn, complete with
my own bathroom, furniture and comfy bed.
Over time, I had the chance to meet the overall full-time Manager
of the Inn, a hearty woman who presided over the place with a
heart of gold, also the Saturday Innkeeper as well as several of
the housekeeping staff. My job at first was simply to live there
and watch over the place as several weeks could go by during the
rainy season without guests.
Over the course of my time there, I wanted to get more involved,
so I began taking on more responsibilities, like being the
Afternoon Innkeeper - greeting guests, taking telephone and
in-person reservations, sending out confirmations, giving brief
tours of the Inn, etc. Eventually, the owners had a need for a
Sunday chef to cook all of the frittatas, homemade donuts, etc.
and they trained me for several months (!) to cook the hearty
food for the guests. I also helped with some laundry and shopping
as needed but there was also a housekeeping staff as well.
Because I am also a yoga teacher, I was able to offer onsite
yoga classes to guests and staff - made even more spectacular by
the fact that we were nestled in the trees, like a treehouse. I
also was able to attend meetings of the Point Reyes B&B
Association and got to meet more of the people who made up the
town of Point Reyes.
My experience as a caretaker really sharpened all sorts of skills
- but basically being flexible, poised and able to "think on my
feet," anticipating the needs of the owners and guests ahead of
time. There were several flooding situations and heavy rains in
the early days so being prepared for contingency and emergency
was extremely important as well.
As hard work as it was, I would not trade my Blackthorne Inn
experiences for anything in the world! My thanks to Gary Dunn and
everyone at The Caretaker Gazette for making this dream come to
life.

consists of a sustainable approach to life in its various
aspects: energy, farming, and travelling. An essential
sustainable element to this project is work-exchange itself, as
our volunteers have the opportunity to engage with these
approaches, learn from them, and experience cultural enrichment
not only through a placement at the farm but also through contact
with guests from all over the world. A placement at the farmhouse
is ideal for volunteers who are looking for a unique work-holiday
experience in a friendly, open, and engaging atmosphere. We are
located in the countryside but are also very close to the
historical center of Perugia (1.50 euro bus ticket to town), so
it will be very easy to experience the different aspects of both
farm and city life. We offer free bikes, free internet access,
free guest kitchen with breakfast, lunch four to five days a
week, free swimming pool use, and more, including the opportunity
to contribute to the management of a working farm and a B&B. The
ideal volunteer for a placement with us is active, social,
hard-working, responsible, reliable, energetic, a good
communicator, interested in exploring the area and learning new
things. If you are a couch potato or an internet-addict, this is
not the place for you. We expect volunteers to have fun while
still being able to recognize the importance of the work to be
done. We are looking for someone who can complete the given tasks
in an efficient, independent, and timely manner, who takes pride
in their work, and who is looking to be a part of a team.
Volunteers should enjoy the work and have a positive attitude.
The general idea is to help us keep our hostel "No.1 in Perugia,"
which has been achieved very much so with the help of past and
present volunteers. To learn more, please visit

INTERESTED IN SELF-SUFFICIENCY? Want to help build a community?
Love the sea? Sailing the farm has arrived on the coast of
Algarve, Portugal, going slowly south to a warmer climate. The
journey so far has been a pleasant one, with almost too little
wind down the coast. We have spent the last two weeks working on
the boat and slowly making her ready for crossing the Atlantic.
We are installing more electricity onboard via solar panels. We
run at 2-4 ampere per hour on average and hopefully we will
manage to generate enough with the solar panels. Everything else
seems to work OK, but there is always stuff needing to be fixed
on a new boat. Our list is still long but getting shorter each
day. If you want to join us just send us an email message. We are
also looking for a crew for our Atlantic crossing. Please send an
email to XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX explaining why you would be
interested in our community and please place this in the Subject

I am offering for rent a spectacular restaurant located in a
historic, well established Inn called Maple Hall. I am looking
for an enterprising restaurateur to run this restaurant as an
independent business (from the Inn). The rent is negotiable and
includes the use of two dining rooms, one attractive porch dining
area and a fully equipped, completely rebuilt, commercial
kitchen. The Inn, called Maple Hall, opened on the 6th of August
2014 and features twenty two rooms, which provide a "built in"
customer base for the restaurant. The existing restaurant (though
closed at the present), Restaurant 1850, rose to the number one
(out of 67) restaurants on Trip Advisor in less than three
months! All our current Inn guests are inquiring "when will the
restaurant reopen?" The person who rents this restaurant could
possibly also provide a breakfast service for the Inn. Maple Hall
is located just off of I-81 on Highway 11, five miles north of
Lexington, Virginia, a small, historic, college town located at
the southern end of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The area is
steeped in history and is one of the Virginia's most popular
tourist attractions. Please view our website to get a "feel" for
