LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Hi Gary, our first Gazette help-wanted ad was answered by two of
your subscribers in Boise, Idaho. Norman and Maureen were just
the couple we needed to make our travel worry-free. They
contacted us within a day of seeing our ad; then sent us detailed
information about themselves and their caretaker goals. They
arrived two days prior to our leaving to get acquainted with us
and the tasks at-hand, and assured our comfortable return. They
not only left our place better than they found it, Norman and
Maureen took excellent care of our cats and poultry. We are so
glad that we gave The Caretaker Gazette a try. We gained new
friends, travelled knowing our property and animals were in great
hands, and offered our caretakers a Montana adventure. Norman and
Maureen spoiled us with their attention to detail, flexibility,
and gracious care. Thanks, Val J., Helena, MT

Great Val! Glad to read another Gazette success story. We're
always happy to hear good feedback about our subscribers - and
we're always happy to hear when a property owner finds great
caretakers via The Caretaker Gazette.

Hi Gary, please renew me for another three years of my Gazette
subscription. Since leaving my full-time job last year I've been
doing well. By my own choice, I am not working full-time and I'm
loving the freedom. I hope all is well with you and your family.
On behalf of all of us who are wanderers but not lost: Keep up
the good work! Barry M., Portland, OR

Thanks for writing, Barry. That's a great life philosophy you
have and one that is shared by so many of our subscribers. Thanks
for the renewal and please keep in touch and, from time to time,
please let us know how things are going for you.

Hello, we received our first issue of The Caretaker Gazette and
we are so amazed at the number of the great people we were able
to contact through just one issue! The quality of the people was
high too, in terms of positions offered. Our second issue was the
one that really opened the door for us. We received an offer to
caretake a beautiful bed and breakfast! The second issue of the
Gazette that we received was the charm. The owners even let us
bring our small dog! The owners are so gracious and honest. It's
a pleasure to work for them. Thank you again for everything!
Nanci T. and Bob S., St. Louis, MO

Nanci, thanks for taking the time to share your experience
with us. It's nice to hear that things worked out so well for you
and Bob. It's great that you were able to find an opportunity
that suits your needs - including being able to bring your small
dog with you. We look forward to hearing more about your
experiences at the bed and breakfast.

Hi Gary, the ad for a housesitter and catsitter for my summer
home that I ran in your Gazette email broadcast resulted in
nearly two dozen email responses! They all sound like they would
be perfect too and the kind of people I would like to have in my
home taking care of my cats while I'm down here in Florida. Now
the hard part! How do I even choose just one? Thanks for
providing such a fantastic service! Terry M., Tampa, FL

Thanks for your message, Terry. I'm glad things worked out for
you so you don't need to leave your home vacant and your cats
unattended while you're away. Like you, many property owners tell
us that they have found their best housesitters by advertising in
the Gazette. Please keep us in mind the next time you'll need a
catsitter/housesitter for your summer home.

HAWAII

WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR SINGLE VOLUNTEERS for the December
2015 - March 2016 time period at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. We require
a two month commitment to volunteer with us! After two months,
you may extend for another two months. Sorry, but we cannot
accommodate couples! If you are intending to use this program as
a means to "move to Hawaii" please do not apply. Our backpacker
hostel is located directly on the edge of the Blue Lagoon and the
Pacific Ocean in beautiful historic Kapa'a Town on the island of
Kauai. Kapa'a was voted one of the top 10 most beautiful towns in
America. Kauai is the "Garden Isle" and is by far the most
beautiful of all the Hawaiian Islands, in fact more beautiful
than all the others put together. Kauai has a lush tropical
environment with a cooling Pacific Trade Wind breeze coming
through the hostel. People travel here from around the world to
hike some of the most amazing trails in the world (see Na Pali
Coast and Waimea Canyon). We are looking for some great helpers
to join our staff! You must be outgoing, energetic, hard-working,
and able to show the "aloha spirit" of the island. We will set up
a Skype interview to get to meet you and see if you would be a
great fit! We currently are looking for helpers with hostel
experience (preferred but not necessary).Volunteers do a variety
of tasks, although mainly it involves any of the following:
Housekeeping - cleaning the hostel and kitchen, bathrooms,
pulling sheets off beds, organizing the hostel, etc.; Reception -
checking people in and out, ensuring people have paid, answering
the telephone, taking cash payments and running credit card
payments. It is up to management's discretion who gets this
position; Maintenance - the tropical environment keeps us busy
with upkeep. This job would be varied depending on the needs. If
you have any maintenance experience, like painting, plumbing,
electric, let us know! But as long as you are a good helper in
any category you will be welcome if you are ready to learn,
because the experience you get here is an actual training in the
hospitality field, and the many facets in the operation and
running of a hostel. In return for your help of 21 hours per week
or less, you will enjoy a nice bed and your utilities, including
of course hot showers, full kitchen and other freebies like
Wi-Fi. We all help prepare a weekly staff meal paid for by the
hostel. We also provide helpers basic staples like rice and beans
to add to your meals everyday if you like. When they leave,
guests often leave fresh food for the staff. There is an eight
week minimum stay, and a three month limit to your time as a
volunteer. The island-wide wide bus service stops in both
directions just outside of our hostel, so everything is within
reach. There is also an 11 mile bike path that touches our
property right outside of our hostel. It runs right along the
edge of the ocean; it is spectacular! You can walk to 20
restaurants; there are 60 in Kapa'a Town, many are international.
There is also live music in Kapa'a seven nights a week at
different pubs and clubs. The sun and moon rise come up directly
in back of the Kauai Beach House Hostel, an amazing experience
every day, just so you can begin and end your day in this
Tropical Paradise of Kauai in blissful surroundings. For more
details, please call XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Building Project. Whilst living just a few steps away from the
water's edge on the east side of Kaua'i you can be a part of this

much more for you to utilize. Winter is here, which means the

sustainable methods and organic materials. We are a non-profit

goals and cherish your time within this incredible opportunity.

are concerned, for example, about global climate, waste
management, animal protection, sustainability and other topics
this work camp might be the best for you. Local Icelandic
environmental issues as well as issues from the participants'
countries will be addressed through discussions. Becoming one of
more than one million tourists coming to Iceland every year might
leave a mark. Do you want to know how to diminish your
environmental impact as a traveler? Each of our Environmentally
Aware work camps will get a chance to improve local environment
through hands-on activities. The specifics of the work might
depend on weather conditions and schedule of our partners. Please

nature, using renewable energy sources - geothermal power and
glacial rivers. The world's northernmost capital bridges the
Atlantic, between Europe and North America. Reykjavík is
spread across a peninsula with a panoramic view of the mountains
and the Atlantic Ocean on almost all sides. Reykjavik is often
called "the nightlife capital of the north", but there is so much
more than pubs and clubs, it also gathers the most interesting of
Icelandic culture. From meeting locals in swimming pools to
passing by Icelandic musicians on the street, the city seems cozy
and cosmopolitan, traditional and modern. In the area closer than
100 Km from Reykjavík, there are several spectacular
waterfalls, geysers, impressive coastline, geothermal park,
lakes, mountains and many more. The Reykjanes peninsula features
the Blue Lagoon spa, the treasure of Icelandic hot pots. The

The Place Where I Belong - Profile of Gary Barker
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Date of Birth: September 19, 1963
Interests: Learning about, exploring, and filming the natural
world, traditional wood working, experiences with others.
Quote: "There's a race of men that don't fit in, a race that
can't sit still; so they break the hearts of kith and kin, and
roam the world at will. They range the field and rove the flood,
and they climb the mountain crest; theirs is the curse of the
gypsy blood, and they don't know how to rest." Robert Service

Gary Barker

I had mostly fulfilled my childhood dream of living in the
wilderness on the Canadian/Minnesota border, when my friend Debby
told me a YMCA camp was looking for a caretaker. Getting to that
point, hadn't been easy. I knew for a long time I was one of
those like Thoreau that didn't fit in to the conventional
lifestyle, and in the wilderness I felt I belonged. So I
hesitated at first because I had become comfortable with my
meager existence. My home was small and running water was only a
convenience part of the year when the shallow well had enough
water in it. I hauled my water otherwise from wherever I could
get it. I took my bath in the lake when the water wasn't frozen
over in the close to six months of winter that had its grip on
the land. The dark mysterious northern forest intrigued me, and
with the abundant wildlife just outside my door, gave me much to
photograph and write about in my weekly nature column in the
local newspaper. Though I was content, I decided maybe I needed a
change and this new job might make life a little easier. I
eventually was hired on as the new property manager for Camp
Warren. As I drove to the camp, I had no great expectations and
wondered if I were doing the right thing.
After I arrived, settled in, and began the job, I never looked
back. For starters, my house had running water year around. My
skills as a handyman were immediately called upon and if I were
to get the job done I would have much to learn and would be
challenged often to do things I had never done before. My
responsibility included 480 acres of land and over 30 buildings.
Many buildings were built in the 1920s at the camp's beginning.
My second week on the job I would be in charge of a large group
of volunteers. That would be my first challenge as I had never
led a large group of people. I did my best to prepare for that
first work week. When the volunteers arrived, they immediately
made me feel at ease. Many of them had been connected with the
camp for years. The volunteer work week was a family reunion that
I quickly became part of. As the years went by, I became more
organized.
After I led that group of volunteers, I found myself standing in
front of a large group of counselors, waiting for me to lead them
by giving them jobs. In time I became more comfortable with
leading people. My ability to remember names improved as I met
many people. My skills as a carpenter, plumber, electrician,
HVAC, and the many emergencies that would arise would be called
upon often. I learned to prepare for inspections from state and
local health departments, and the fire marshal, and to become
certified by the American Camping Association. I solicited new
contractors for projects, maintained established relationships
and learned from all of them.
Moving to the camp from my wilderness home, I didn't give up
being able to observe nature. Wildlife thrived there too and as
the years went by I exposed a lot of film. An active bald eagle's
nest added to nature's bounty. One summer, I rescued an immature
eagle that got pushed out of its nest. I got the campers involved
with the rescue. They helped supply the fish to feed the eagle
from the nearby lake. The role of caretaker allowed me to connect
with children in many ways that I would have never thought
possible before.
During that decade I became interested in improving my
woodworking skills, and so became an accomplished wood carver. I
also built furniture for the camp. Then I learned stone masonry
at the Great Lakes School of Log Building. I put that to
practical use repairing several old chimneys and fireplaces
around the camp and building a tower and leading a project with
counselors in training where we built an outdoor stone fireplace.
At the end of that decade, being a property manager brought out
the best in me. I accomplished more than I ever would have
thought possible before I became a caretaker. As a property
manager, I excelled.
I was invited to partake in a training course offered by The
Minnesota Historical Society and State Parks on restoring log
buildings. Then I put my new skills to work to do restoration
work on some of the old buildings. My interest and confidence
grew and after a decade I left the camp working as a contractor
restoring historical buildings. Leaving a position that was the
best wasn't a quick decision or easy. I knew that the someday I
would probably return as a property manager/caretaker someday.
As a restoration contractor, I restored several buildings all
located on the North Western Plains. I restored several log
structures, barns, Fort Mandan, a museum, and other museum
exhibits. My work and I were featured in True West Magazine.
After three years working as a contractor, I returned as a
caretaker at Nature Camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.
I've returned to another place where the children sing, and to my
Appalachian roots. I immediately fit into the position. The
similarities of the previous camp were many. Except Nature Camp
is smaller and an environmental science camp. I believe the
smaller size gives the kids a better quality camp experience. The
culture here is also a family. A comment was made that I was a
natural for the job. Thanks to The Caretaker Gazette I found this
job and I'm back to a place where I fit in.

grows much of my food on a small lot in a small town in the south
Louisiana Acadiana area known for Cajun and Creole music and
culture and I play Zydeco and Cajun music with local bands.

mostly plants and I'm a pretty good cook. I know about cultural
events involving music and can show you the inside of the local

We would prefer a live-in housesitter but will also consider twice daily visits to our home for feeding/watering duties from any local applicants. Might need to shovel the front walk if it gets icy or snows. Please email why you would be interested in housesitting and taking care of our pets and provide at least three checkable references.
