Greetings! I was just browsing through some old issues of The
Caretaker Gazette and realized that it's time to renew my
subscription. Please sign me up for another year. I live part of
the year in Costa Rica and part of the year in Massachusetts. I
am often asked how I managed this enviable situation and I always
tell them it was thanks to The Caretaker Gazette. Once I accepted
that first position in Costa Rica from one of your issues it
opened a lots of doors for me and I've been able to continue this
lifestyle. I love it! Thank you and keep up the good work! Mike
K., Boston, MA

Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences, Mike, and
for your nice words about the Gazette. You are very fortunate to
be able to experience the best of both worlds, Costa Rica and New
England. Many of our subscribers have been able to create similar
lifestyles.

Wow! What a huge response we've had to the caretaker wanted ad we
ran in your publication! I never dreamed we'd have so many
excellent and experienced people want to come here to help out on
our property. Your publication definitely reaches a huge number
of fine quality people! We were almost overwhelmed with all the
emails from great people to sort through. It's a pleasure to have
so many to choose from but it hasn't been an easy decision. We
finally picked a caretaker who we think will be the best of the
best for our property! Thank you for all your help. We will
recommend you to our friends as a great source for caretakers!
Bill E., Denver, CO

Dear Gary, as they say, "Better late than never"! After decades I
finally discovered your publication and the wonderful community
of people that are part of it. I have been spinning my wheels
trying to find a position as a housesitter and then on one of my
overseas trips one of your subscribers was kind enough to
introduce me to your publication. It's no exaggeration to say
that it's already changed my life. I know I will find a position
through your great service and I've already met online such a
great group of your subscribers. I'm running a housesitter wanted
ad and I'm ready for wherever this takes me on my housesitting
journey! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Judy L., Oakland, CA

WORK EXCHANGE opportunity available in northern California. This
is a farm four miles inland off the Mendocino Coast. We are in
the early stages of a Permaculture installation and would love
some steady hands to help keep things rolling! Over the last two
years we have been hand digging passive water harvesting
earthworks (swales and ponds) and planting them with diverse food
forests at three locations here on the coast. The response from
the local wildlife has already been radical! We are also in the
process of gathering and breeding hardy, locally adapted plants
and creatures for casual gardeners, homesteaders and backyard
farmers alike (self-seeding annuals, perennial vegetables,
medicinal herbs, fruit trees and bushes, bantam chickens,
Icelandic sheep, and honeybees!). We are on the lookout for
someone who would like to learn and partake in Permaculture
installations here on the Mendocino coast. Short term work trade
initially with long term possibility. Interest and passion are
the most important skill sets but it would be rad if you have
knowledge in any of these areas: animal care (we tend
sheep/chickens), gardening, natural building (cob, rammed earth),
herbal-ism (we grow lots of herbs!), cooking, spinning/knitting
(sheep wool), fermentation/cheese making (all kinds), web page
management (networking), carpentry/electrical, and digging! (lots
of shovel work). Cheers ya'll. We have plenty of tent sites
available underneath giant redwoods as well as a sweet guest room
in the main house for the right fit. There are four of us that
live here full time (two men, one women, one boy). For more info,
please email XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these
ads is available only to Gazette subscribers)

Edmonton, Alberta. We offer yoga retreats, vision quests, sweat
lodges, optional raw food and training, juice cleansing, detox,
medicine wheel workshops, and all kinds of other workshops and
courses. We are in the process of setting up organic gardens and

workshop attendants. In the future we want to create labyrinths,
greenhouses, root cellars, chicken coops and lots more walking

the driveway as it piles up. There will be other various duties
that will come up as well, depending on your interests and

eat together, but you do have your own rustic kitchen in your

PROPERTY CARETAKER PROFILE

Mining for Fool's Gold
Address: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these ads
is available only to Gazette subscribers)
Interests: I'm a geologist, but all of the natural world and most
sciences intrigue me, also travel, photography, music and
teaching.
Quote: "I never met a rock I didn't like" -- apologies to Will
Rodgers.

Bob with one of his ametrine crystals, Spruce Ridge, WA

"Fools' Gold". Many prospectors have uttered those words in
disgust, as the glittery substance they found was not what they
sought. At Spruce Ridge, high in Washington's Cascade Range,
pyrite is what we seek, in a dazzling array of crystal shapes and
in spectacular combinations with quartz and barite. Our Fools'
Gold! comes with an exclamation point.
As a geologist, my business is collecting crystals for museums
and mineral enthusiasts. Crystals tend to occur in mountainous,
out-of-the-way places. Keeping our crystal resource safe in a
place like Spruce was a continual problem until I discovered Gary
Dunn and The Caretaker Gazette. This was in the late 1980's, long
before the internet. Our first caretaker was my old college
friend John, who had just gone through a divorce and needed a
place to "cool out". John found Spruce too remote, so he built a
cabin closer to the road that is now used by all caretakers. He
showed me a copy of the snail-mailed Gazette he was perusing to
find a situation closer to town. I had never heard of caretaking
as a lifestyle, but have been thoroughly impressed with the
varied applicants I've met over the last 25 years.
Our caretakers' job is protecting our equipment and land from
trespassers. A few of my favorites are these three:
1) Butch and Mary were refugees from the tech business. They were
making good money but hated their jobs in California, and decided
to try early retirement. Mary says of the experience: "Deciding
to overwinter in the wilderness was not our smartest decision,
but we survived, and learned a lot about ourselves in the
process. Sharing snow drifts with wilderness creatures was an
experience we'll never forget." They moved from the wilderness of
Washington to caretaking in Hawaii, and thence to Phoenix, where
they still live. BTW, we don't encourage our caretakers to
overwinter at Spruce.
2) Dan and Jake were both aspiring authors. Their summers at
Spruce were years apart, but their struggles to find the perfect
word to convey a thought was similar. Dan wrote on the cabin
wall: "My name is D. Swan, I hail from Racine. I lived in this
cabin and did nothing but dream." Jake got married and published
his first book just after leaving us. Dan lives in Wisconsin and
Jake in Oregon.
3) At five years, Bill was our longest term caretaker. He'd
worked out a perfect caretaking lifestyle: with us in the
Northwest woods May to October, and in Arizona November to April.
Both employers were happy to have him back year after year. Bill
had been a stockbroker; he enjoyed our low-stress outdoor jobs
and living situation.
Our caretakers often comment that they are in the best physical
shape of their lives when they leave Spruce. A daily half-mile
hike up a series of cliffs will do that for you! It's a beautiful
hike, through an old growth forest, with views of waterfalls and
a whitewater river along the way. During spring and early summer,
this hike is the only requirement for the caretaker, so we like
to make sure applicants plan something to do during their
abundant free time. Our caretakers have been writers and artists,
photographers, musicians, crafters and one cat trainer. Jim spent
two seasons training his kittens to act on command; they all now
work on TV shows and commercials. Amazing what one can accomplish
with many months of free time!
Once the crystal miners arrive things get a lot busier. Starting
about August 1st, we collectors live and work on the mountaintop
for two months. The caretaker hikes up daily to help with
projects, machinery maintenance, and rock moving, plus
backpacking loads up to and down from the mine. On average, this
work requires four to five hours per day; the caretaker is paid
by the hour. Fringe benefits of working with us include frequent
wildlife viewing: deer, elk, black bear, mountain goats, fishers,
and marmots live in our ?neighborhood'; soaking at a wilderness
hot spring (our only neighbor in a 26 mile-long river valley);
learning and enjoying the bounty offered by the forest:
mushrooms, berries, ferns and other wild edibles are often part
of our diet.
We receive an average of 20 responses each time we advertise in
the Gazette. We look for people with some experience living in
isolated, off-grid situations. The worst-case scenario for us is
to hire someone who spends a couple weeks on the job and decides
life alone in the woods is not for them. Fortunately, that has
not happened for many years, as we've learned to fully describe
the job and living situation so there are no surprises. We've had
multi-year correspondences with several of our caretakers, before
we've hired them, waiting for the perfect match between their
situation and ours. We are still in touch with many of our former
caretakers, who have become part of the extended "Spruce" family.
For a view from the caretaker side, see Larry Gilson's Caretaker
Profile in the September/October, 2014 issue of the Gazette.

MADAGASCAR

A LIBRARY VOLUNTEER is needed. We opened a small library in
Madagascar and we need a volunteer who would be keeping the
library open every day, including Holidays, and whenever asked.
Accommodation provided, food provided by villagers for a small
fee (10-15eur/month). Mostly children are visitors in the library
(about 50) coming from close and far away villages. Volunteers
are encouraged to do various activities with children, play
games, teach them how to read, go on trips, etc. For any such
activities, if properly planned and communicated through me can
be paid for. I am a student who likes to open projects like this
around the world, if I have proper plans e.g. what volunteer
needs the money for I am able to organize fundraising events and
get the money. Further projects (e.g. electricity) are in
progress and so volunteers can help with other projects as well.
The knowledge of some French would be very useful. Please write

HELP NEEDED in a farmhouse in Downeast Maine. Our farmhouse is in
a rural setting, in Washington County surrounded by forest,
farmland, lakes, and a spectacular sea coast. Our Farmstead is
totally organic and vegetarian and we have large gardens. Most of
last year, and so far this one too, we have been completing the
renovation of our home, so there are still little jobs to get
done in the house while out in the yard there are chickens and
vegetable plots to care for. In addition in the spring and summer
we have several building or landscaping projects in progress
where help is appreciated and during the quieter months the work
may also include some general house and yard cleaning, snow
clearance, fire wood cutting and stacking and other preparations
for the winter. If you are looking for somewhere to hang out for
a while in a fresh and interesting location and have a good
attitude towards work and communication then we think we should
appeal. This is not a paid position, the position is a volunteer
position and free accommodation is provided during the volunteer
period. The volunteer commitment is generally 20 to 25 hours a
week except in the three winter months when it may drop to about
10 hours a week. We're not very formal but as you will be sharing
our home with our children occasionally when we stay at the
property, we do require a photocopy/scanned picture of a legal
Photo ID (driving license, state ID, or passport) to be supplied
before arrival as proof of identity. Accommodation maybe in the
main farmhouse, in an off-the-grid caretaker's cabin close to the
farmhouse or Flowercottage a property nearby. Please email

HOUSING PROVIDED in exchange for work/caretaking in Westhampton
Beach, NY. We like to have eight to nine caretakers at the Inn
over the winter with varied responsibilities. We already have
five so three to four more would be great. In most cases, these
are not salaried positions but free housing in exchange for work.
The number of hours required is contingent upon skills and level
of housing required. The housing is available until May 15, 2015.
However, for those with really special skills/trades such as
skilled carpentry or plumbing or those who are technologically
savvy enough to upgrade our website and integrate with online
travel agencies and an online booking engine for us, it could be
extended. In fact, if one can really manage the hotel which would
include the above and social marketing, etc., there might be a
small stipend. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for
these ads is available only to Gazette subscribers) is located at
7 Beach Lane, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978. We also need some
people to do housekeeping/maintenance. There is not a ton of
housekeeping as we only have 14 guest rooms which are rarely
fully occupied. Additionally, we will frequently have extended
stay guests who receive no housekeeping at all. However, there is
always something to do. We would also consider someone with
special carpentry/plumbing skills for fewer hours in exchange for
housing/expenses if they can help us with some projects (floors
and bathroom improvements). The number of work hours required
will be contingent upon level of housing needed, how many people,
and responsibilities. Absolutely no smoking. No experience
necessary for any of the positions. If interested, please contact
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these ads is

NORWAY

INTERESTED IN SELF-SUFFICIENCY? Want to help build a community?
Love the sea? On an organic farm a few hours north of Oslo, our
collective is for anyone keen to learn, share ideas, and work
hard. We are building a sailboat and when she is finished we want
to sail the world, visiting other eco-villages, collecting
knowledge and traveling in the most eco-friendly way possible.
Anyone who helps us out will have the chance to join our crew. We
also work on the farm, building up the infrastructure to create a
stable base for our community. On the boat side the biggest thing
is that all the inner plating and insulation are all finished up,
the bathroom (wet-room) is plated and all water tanks are welded
into position. Next big thing is to get the engine into the boat.
We have to lift it up three meters and then two meters sideways.
It's a little messy but we are working on this right now. Weight
of the engine is around 500 kg so we need a hoist-system. The
volunteers took some days off to hitch-hike to the west coast,
and came happily back home with pictures of fiords, and camping
outside in the mountains close to the glaciers. The summer has
been extremely warm one so contrary to what I was thinking that
they will almost freeze to death they got back to the farm
sun-burned with a happy smile on their faces. During the next few
weeks we will be harvesting what we have been planting this year
and we will work on the engine and rigging, so if you have any
skills you might think will be useful please feel free to contact
us. We also looking for crew for sailing across the Atlantic,
heading towards Cuba when the boat is finished so if you find
that fancy please contact us. Please send an email to
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these ads is
available only to Gazette subscribers) explaining why you would
be interested in our community and please place this in the
Subject Line: SEA GYPSY APLLICATION so we know you have been
reading this. Love from XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information
for these ads is available only to Gazette subscribers) - a sea
gypsy tribe of tomorrow!

THAILAND

WE ARE CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEER(S) (couples and groups
also welcome) to work at our dog center in Bang Saphan, Thailand
for one year (we will still accept people for shorter stays of
course). We are a small dog rescue center which cares for 50 plus
dogs at our center and around fifty more at a local temple. We
aim to have these dogs adopted within months of their arrival
unless they have medical problems, in which case we would keep
them at the center and care for them. We also neuter and treat
local street dogs. You would be given your own accommodation
(this is only available if you can commit for more than six
months) for a year in exchange for helping us in our effort to
have all of our dogs adopted within the year and eventually close
the center. Your day-to-day work will include helping with
adoptions (spreading awareness), treating and caring for the dogs
(feeding, cleaning, etc.), helping with rescues and fundraising.
Headrock Dogs Rescue will still exist once the center dogs have
been adopted but we will only treat and care for the dogs at the
temple and on the street beyond this point. Bang Saphan is a well
hidden secret and we want to keep it that way except for
volunteers who appreciate the natural beauty of Thailand and a
peaceful harmonious place to stay that makes you think of
paradise. If you would like to come and volunteer with us we will
help you organize your trip. We can arrange transportation to the
area, advise you on flights, supply information about where to
eat and what is good for trips, etc. We don't charge you for
coming to volunteer; we just appreciate your help. Please read
the thoughts of past volunteers at our website when you visit:

VIETNAM

WE NEED AN ENGLISH TEACHER for the duration of one to six months.
This is a nonprofit that provides training and job placement for
unemployed and rural women in the nearby villages. We make
beautiful souvenirs and all profits go back to help more people
in need. Our craft school in Vinh Long Province, Southern
Vietnam, is also a place to host local and foreign tourists and
visitors who want to learn more about craft making and the
Vietnamese culture. The school is surrounded by a relaxing
garden, lotus ponds and native plants, with the Mekong River
going by the front yard. It is a great place for the guests to
chill out and learn about life in the Mekong Delta. Since the
team in our craft school, including the artisans who are rural
disadvantaged women, barely speak English, we are looking for
someone to be based here to teach the team English and how to
welcome the tourists. Or if the person knows bag and art design,
they can teach the artisans new designs. Since we are a
nonprofit, where all the profits we earn go back to support more
people in need, we are not able to provide for housing/food
stipend. Yet we are happy to help the volunteers to find housing.

Rain Soaked Artists Looking For A Slice Of Paradise. Us: We are
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these ads is
available only to Gazette subscribers) and we want to take care
of your house. In short, we are an artist collective based in the
bustling Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. We
have 30 members in our group who combine their various efforts
and talents to make art. Musicians, painters, actors and writers
live together under one roof at 1633 17th Ave while we also care
for an 11,000 sq. ft. multi-million dollar property. Our duties
include gardening, landscaping, painting, plumbing, construction
work and every other skill that is needed to maintain a
120-year-old house as a beautiful living space and home. We host
monthly art gallery events, live music performances,
community-building workshops and other shindigs. Of course, as
our house is more than a century old, our work is never finished
and we do what we must to keep it clean, comfortable and inviting
for all those that enter. You can view our home at:
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact information for these ads is
available only to Gazette subscribers) Our host: You own a
property on the island of Maui and want more than just your
typical caretaker scenario. These days, the rain clouds have
started forming overhead as we move into the dreary, damp months
that create the stereotypical Seattle winter (it's really not
that bad, we swear!) Anyway, what we want is an additional
caretaking opportunity in a place known for being one of the most
beautiful places in the world. Our goal is to collaborate with a
property owner in Maui and workout a similar caretaking
opportunity, in which anywhere from 5 to 10 members of our
collective go to Maui on assignment in our member based exchange
program in a caretaking capacity on the island. The In Arts NW is
coming to soak up the sun, enjoy the sights, chill at the beach
and care for a property in as loving a manner as we care for this
one here in Seattle. The Dream: A few representatives from our
collective will be in Hawaii in late January on vacation and
would love to meet up with any interested property owners who are
looking for caretakers. If our goals and interests line up, we
can hammer out the details to make it happen. It's a win-win
situation: You get someone to help maintain and improve your
property, and we get the opportunity to share your little slice
of paradise. We can be reached at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX (Contact
information for these ads is available only to Gazette
subscribers) Thank you.
