LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Gary and family, I am writing to renew my subscription and
to tell you what a delight your publication is. I cannot avail
myself of any of the delightful opportunities therein. I work in
horticulture for the City of Seattle, as Steward of one of
Seattle's oldest, grandest Olmsted parks. I won't be retiring for
another four years but it is such fun to read the Gazette and
think of all the possibilities which exist in the world! I hope I
have the energy when I retire to do something cool. Thank you for
the dreams and fantasies you provide to us who are "chained
to the plow". Someday... N.G., Seattle, WA

Thanks Nancy. I appreciate your taking the time to share your
thoughts. We have many retirees who have embarked on exciting
second careers via the pages of the Gazette.

Because of all the spam I get in my email Inbox, I have been
reluctant to give you our email address. Am I missing out on
anything by not having my email address? K. T. Dallas, TX

Kevin thanks for asking. You are missing out on a lot of new
opportunities that come into The Caretaker Gazette every day. Our
Privacy Policy on our website states that we do not rent, sell,
trade, or release your information to anyone else. We even have
many subscribers who don’t use computers themselves who
give us a friend or relative’s email address so that we can
email updates to their email address for them.

Thank you so much!!! I'll put a pot of coffee on the minute the
new Gazette issue gets here and let the dreaming begin!!! We
really appreciate your efforts to produce a quality product and
to keep your customers happy. We are relieved and pleased to
learn that you are still a real and honest person in spite of the
growth of your Gazette. I still have a personally signed letter
from you wishing us happy holidays back in the early 90's. That
kind of customer treatment is rare these days and much
appreciated. Keep up the wonderful work!!! Thank you and have a
beautiful day! P. W. Anchorage, AK

Thank you Pam. We appreciate all of our subscribers and
although, during our 26 years of publishing the Gazette, we have
grown and continue to grow, we still strive to maintain our high
level of personal customer service.

Hi Gary, thanks for the renewal reminder. I was wondering why I
did not receive the last issue; I had not realized my
subscription had expired, so you can see that your email
reminders (to renew) really work! When you renew my subscription,
would you please include the Monday night email updates that you
listed in your email to me. Thank you for renewing my
subscription so I can see the past issue online on Wednesday.
Hope you have a good Thanksgiving. Sincerely, T. R., Bend, OR

Terri thanks for renewing your subscription to the Gazette. We
are always happy to provide the most recent email update with new
opportunities to our subscribers when they renew their Gazette
subscription.

WE ARE BEGINNING THE GRAND ADVENTURE and need help. We have sold
out and moved to a new place way back in the hills in Newton
County. It is very remote - our dream place, backing up to the
National Forest, with a ¼ mile Creek frontage. We are in a
camper right now planning to build a passive solar home and use a
solar array. It is fun starting over from scratch, but tough,
rough living right now. We could always use help. We ask that you
pick up one barn chore and one household chore (of my choice - we
try to match your likes, but sometimes things just need to be
done) and then help two - four hours a day. Right now we have
tents and big air mattresses to offer. Later this year we will
add onto the camper to create a bunkhouse. It is rough living.
You would be welcome to come and stay. We usually suggest two
weeks, and if we all click, then a longer stay would be great.
This gives both of us a chance to back out gracefully. We do not
have phone reception back on the creek and so we can only check
our mail and phone on Fridays. So please call
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX or email XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX or visit
us at XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX for more info.

CALIFORNIA

VOLUNTEERS needed in the harsh, beautiful southeastern California
Mojave Desert, 2,200 feet elevation, midway between Los Angeles
and Las Vegas. This is a beginning organic produce ranch. My
goals are to develop a sustainable, self-sufficient, vegetarian,
spiritual, permaculture community where we provide most of our
own food, energy, health care, shelter and income, and trade with
others. Suggested length of stay for volunteers: whatever makes
you happy. Longer is better as I expect to invest a lot of
initial training. But stay however long as it works for both of
us. March would be ideal so you can gradually build up tolerance
for increasing heat. If you have a camper, trailer, or motor
home, drive that over and live in it. I can provide hook ups for
water, sewer, and electricity. I have three travel trailers for
interns. You may use internet, washing machine, and solar clothes
dryer and the house. Trailers have linen and dishes. Expect five
days a week, minimum four hours/day, including some weekends. No
children or pets. Owner is a vegan, transcendental mediator,
sidha yogi, UFO experiencer, channeler, dowser, registered nurse
with career burn-out in her 60's beginning a new chapter in life.
Ranch has grid electric, well water, septic tank. Domestic
animals here now are chickens, ducks, geese, dogs, cats and bees.
Are you allergic to any of these? No telephone lines, but cell
phones work most of the time. Internet via satellite. This is a
great opportunity for a volunteer to get in touch with the
desert, the planet, the stars and yourself. Meditation, prayer
and contemplation are encouraged during off hours. This is a
great place for doing body purification programs, reading,
hiking, de-stressing, writing that book, getting away from
civilization. Please contact XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX or call
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX or email XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

LOOKING FOR SOMEONE who is experienced in growing rice (such as
in Arkansas or Texas). I am looking for someone wanting to
relocate to northern California. Ideally a single man,
non-drinker/smoker, with a livestock background (horses/cows).
Prefer a person good with repair work, fences, and all around
experience. A nice place to stay and salary will be provided.
Please email your resume and references to
caretaker@caretaker.org (please include these words in the
subject line: “California rice growing position”).
Thank you.

CARETAKER POSITION offered in Northern California’s

duties on my ranch, keeping trespassers away. This is
off-the-grid, primitive living. Must be self-sustaining and love
the outdoors. Must have good references and be in reasonable
physical shape and condition, and have a good attitude, as the
property is somewhat remote. No criminal history, drugs,
drinking, or mental issues, and no friends or visitors with same
– in fact we prefer light/little to no visitors. This is
not employment or a paid position, so you must have some other
source of income available to live off of. Animals are OK,
including horses, pigs, etc. Looking for a single male, couple,
retiree, or a small family. A 4x4, SUV, ATV or horse would help
in your duties. I am only looking for serious replies. Please

CARETAKER PROFILE
“Adventures In Housesitting from Lynn Woods”
Date of Birth: 7/19/52

Interests: Travelling the world, soft adventure sports (such as

and cooking, movie nostalgia and European History Quote:
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one

--Robert Frost

Lynn L. Woods

Greetings fellow peripatetics, sojourners, adventurers and others
born under the wandering star. I am a native born Texan
(Houston), but live throughout the school year in Natchitoches,
Louisiana, home of the movie Steel Magnolias and oldest city in
Louisiana. I had taken a sabbatical from Northwestern State
University, where I am a professor of Hospitality Management
Tourism and Recreation and was looking for a perfect place to
find a “niche” for a few months.
I had done housesitting years ago when I lived in St. Croix, U.S.
Virgin Islands. It’s quite common there for individuals to
have a “holiday home” or even an ideal situation of
living six months on St. Croix and six months in New York for
example, which was the case for one elderly gentleman who I
housesat for. Besides Mr. Charlie, I did housesitting for a
couple who had a Doberman Pinscher named, Sandy, who was supposed
to be taken to the beach three times a week. Of course, after I
got there, Ms. Sandy got to go to the beach EVERYDAY!
While teaching our students, who are getting ready for their
field experience, I came across a reference to The Caretaker
Gazette in Richard Nelson Bolles’ book, What Color Is Your
Parachute? What a great idea for our students in Hospitality
Management and Tourism, I thought, since many of the positions
that I teach about in my classes involve lodging, resort or dude
ranch management. The Gazette would be the perfect publication to
subscribe to. The wonderful thing about the Gazette is the
variety of positions… everything from fulltime
Jack-of-All-Trades to simply housesitting or even house swapping
while on vacation. It’s a kind of giant equalizer, by that
I mean, people from the upper classes, call upon people from all
sorts of classes for help! People who may not ever have a chance
to reside in a luxury domicile can, and people who need to get
their estates in order can find reliable assistance.
As a result, I just returned from two months living in
Kenilworth, England. My journey to Kenilworth began with an ad in
The Caretaker Gazette. A resident there was looking for someone
to housesit for two months, and take care of their cat. I quickly
replied. The homeowners and I knew it was kismet when I answered
the ad, because we both have the identical surname…even
though we are not related. Sebastian looked like the kind of cat
that needed a lot of stroking but plenty of independence too! The
homeowners picked me up from Coventry Coach Station where I had
taken a coach from Heathrow Airport, and then drove me on to
Kenilworth. Char and Joe were gracious hosts for one night before
setting off the next morning for Spain. Sebastian and I then were
left alone in the house for over two months.
Kenilworth is the site of Sir Walter Scott’s novel of the
same name and home to the Earl of Leicester’s Kenilworth
Castle, Robert Dudley and a favorite of Elizabeth Tudor. One of
the pubs here, The Virgins and Castle, was frequently patronized
by none other than William Shakespeare. Besides being able to
design a guest lecture series with neighboring Universities and
doing some much needed research, I have managed to integrate
myself with the locals by taking an Indian cookery class, joining
a social club and going Royal Scottish Dancing each Thursday
night! Weekends can be spent punting down the river Avon or
journeying to such historic castles as Warwick or Stoneleigh
Abbey for a Jane Austin tour. How delighted I was with my
housesitting position! Char and Joe returned from two months in
Spain to a well kept house, and a very happy, spoiled cat
Sebastian. The only one who wasn't so happy was me since it meant
that I would be leaving my idyllic setting and returning to the
U.S. It is true that you really never get to know a place until
you actually live there. My experience in England was absolutely
WONDERFUL!
The friends I have made here in Kenilworth, I am sure, will be
long-lasting. The opportunity of living in another country and
learning “how the natives do it” would not have been
possible without the Gazette. It really is true that living
somewhere is quite different than just visiting. So if you are
getting started in a career, or wanting to retire and move to a
new location, or wishing to just simply go someplace unique and
different for a holiday… The Caretaker Gazette might just
be your answer. All it takes is the right attitude and
willingness to help people who need someone reliable.

HAWAII

HELP WANTED on a relatively remote off-grid, solar electric, oceanfront, retreat/home in South Kona. The caretaker must have skills in the areas of tropical gardening/landscaping (includes trimming, drip irrigation, weeding, and organic maintenance; however, not a farm!), maintenance/repair, structural and mechanical, basic plumbing, electrical, seasonal wood finishing, screen repair, and knowledge of wood/hand tools. Auto maintenance and basic mechanical skills are a plus. Agility and strength and some "heavy lifting”, ladder climbing necessary. Applicants should be neat, communicate well, be willing to follow direction, and be a team player with a good work ethic. The caretaker should relate well to other staff, guests, and also be able to handle time alone. This is not for someone city oriented. Must be comfortable in a warm tropical beach/ocean environment; “outdoor" living and being close to nature. Work trade plus wages and benefits based upon commitment and experience. Owners/original designers/builders are on site and available to train and orient to all the systems and the local environment so that caretaker is able to manage our home/retreat both when the owners are home or traveling off island. The property is smoke, drug and alcohol free. Please email your information, and recent photo to caretakergazette@gmail.com and include “Hawaii Position” in the Subject Line for our forwarding purposes.
