Dear Gary, I’m so grateful to you and The Caretaker Gazette. I never would have dreamed to receive over 500 hits to my website: [Contact info available to subscribers] from just one of your email broadcasts that I paid for. Most responses were to give us encouragement; some shared how their own lives needed to be challenged in helping others. Whether we turn on nightly news, or listen to talk radio there seems to be each day a growing number of people who have no answers in the natural to the problems they face. Making matters worse some face these problems alone. Just in the past three days, I’ve redirected some of my own thoughts; instead of just focusing on that house sitting or estate management position in the future, I can at least be a listening ear for some in the present. Democrats or Republicans, rich or poor, religious or atheist, in these uncertain times all of us need hope. HOUSE/PET-SITTER needed in Wondecla, from 12/19/2011 until 1/7/2012. We have two dogs, and they are house dogs, but we have a big yard and they love to be outside as well. They have a walk in the afternoon, not strictly structured i.e. we walk around the back paddock so they can explore. We prefer them to sleep inside at night, no problem as they are house trained. Not really fussy eaters, and, love a bone (good as bribery when we go out). We have small acreage backing onto a permanent creek. HOUSE SWAP WANTED. We would like to exchange our Australian home for one in England from September to November 2011. Swap your home or canal boat in southern England for our bungalow in Bowen, Queensland Australia. We went to the UK about 15 years ago and didn’t get to anywhere near what we wanted. We want to travel all over the UK and Ireland and possibly France. We think about three months would suit us. We would also like to spend some time in a canal boat if possible. I am a retired marine engineer and my wife is a retired nurse so someone willing to swap a canal boat for three months for a house in Australia would be our first preference. Our house is what is known as a bungalow and is built of masonry brick and very comfortable. We have, of course, TV and internet access. Bowen is a small town (9,000 population) on the coast between Mackay and Townsville. We have a car for the use of a “home swapper” and two dogs. They live very close to us and are terribly spoilt. Bowen is close to the Whitsunday islands and although no services operate from here (I have no idea why not!) services are available from Airlie Beach which is a 40 minute drive from here. I have a 50 foot yacht which could be made available to the right person. The climate is tropical and the rainfall for the time of year we are looking at is very low as our rainy season doesn’t start until about Christmas. I NEED A house sitter for my home and pets in the Washington Park area of Denver from August 19 to September 3, 2011. house sitter(S) NEEDED in southeastern Colorado for one week. This is not a paid position. I need a couple or single person (non-smokers) to care for my property and animals: horses, goats, dog, cats and an assortment of birds. This is the major challenge as there are baby birds being born each day – would require an attitude of wanting to experience this aspect of animal care. My son has invited me to visit with him in Florida “yesterday” so I am hoping in haste to find some adventurous people willing to take on this arrangement and have a change from their own situation. These are the chores here: feed and water all the critters in the morning (about 40 minutes with two people) and then again in the evening (15 minutes). The longest “chore” will be walking the dogs. We have a 3-year-old Pyrenees female who minds the bird area and she loves to come out for a walk twice a day with the two Collies. We have a one mile walking track out in the fields. The trees will need watering each day utilizing the drip system, this involves turning on and off the faucets/ hydrants. Accommodation will be the master bedroom, with attached bathroom. The house has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, den, lounge, and kitchen with an attached dining room. Clean and tidy. My home has TV, DVD, video, wireless internet, sewing machine, and all the essentials like bread making machine. The property is in town and is seven acres (or two town blocks). The town is 90 minutes from Colorado Springs. Use of a car is possible. We have several bicycles available also. We will leave the swimming pool active (12′ x 24′) if you can do the work to maintain it (we have all the “stuff”). There are a couple of lakes really handy; beautiful at this time of year for a wander or a sail if you are competent to take out our sailing dinghy. You can also walk to the excellent community library and into town. Our rural, farming community population is 1,200. The area has an early trading settlement to visit, the Arkansas River close by, Koshare performances, preserved dinosaur tracks, and many places if you like exploring your environs. Connecticut

Costa Rica

WE ARE SEEKING A VOLUNTEER to help at a small hotel in Orosi, near Cartago, where a room is provided with free internet and laundry, in return for handing out keys and cleaning rooms. The room provided has cooking facilities and a private bathroom with hot water. We’d like a long term volunteer who can spend at least a month in this role. Volunteering at the hotel would suit someone who works on the internet or from home or is retired. The seven room hotel requires less than two hours per day of cleaning but the main requirement is to be available to provide keys for the guests. The position would also be suitable for a couple or a family. To be able to speak Spanish would be an advantage, but it is not a requirement.  CAREGIVER is needed to assist my 79-year-old husband with meals, grooming and daily walks. There will be periods of time when he will need three meals a day when I am not home but normally just breakfast and lunch, as well as helping to feed and care for a number of cats and a sweet dog. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES available. We are a Spanish-speaking family who live in Villas Mastatal, located in a remote village outside of Puriscal. Our farm is 24 hectares and we produce organic crops. We have three horses, two dogs, and several cows. We make our own homemade cheese from cow’s milk and we are now focusing on building more organic crops. There are volunteer opportunities for construction projects, gardening, and working with medicinal plants here on our farm as well. Nearby activities can include tours of hot springs, river tours, and visiting. Volunteers will typically work Monday through Friday for at least five hours a day. Breakfast is served from 6:30 – 7:30am and lunch is served promptly at noon. We have individual rooms for volunteers, and private cabins as well, and an area for camping if you have your own tent. Born and raised on the Central Coast of California, I grew up loving the outdoors, which gave me the opportunity to experience and develop many interests that would later motivate my career choices. I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands. My father is a handyman, auto mechanic and carpenter. Growing up, working alongside my father taught me to be very mechanically inclined. While attending college to study fine arts in San Luis Obispo California, I started my own landscaping and gardening business. This helped finance my way through school for two years and then became my primary source of income for an additional five years. I managed two to three employees on 20 different properties. I organized schedules, tasks, and budgets for all my clientele during that length of time. My main responsibilities over the seven years included landscaping maintenance and design, installing sprinkler systems, ordering supplies, estimating for jobs, as well as various other duties to run a small business. Eventually, I sold my business after college and moved to Hawaii to continue my pursuit of studying fine art. While living there, I supported myself by working as a house painting contractor. I specialized in interior and exterior painting of custom homes. On the side, I continued my work as a teacher’s assistant at a fine art school and sold my artwork in local art galleries and cafés in Maui. One afternoon, while setting up one of my art displays, I met a resident who owned a nice home on the island and he hired me to paint his interior. Upon completion of the job, he asked me if I would be the caretaker for his home and property due to his family’s relocation to the mainland. I accepted the position, and I took care of all aspects of maintaining the home and property for approximately one year until the beautiful estate was sold. I found the caretaking position to be very rewarding. I enjoyed working with the landscape and looking after the property. I was determined to find similar work on the island of Kauai. I moved to Kauai where I was employed by a couple to do some painting and landscaping on their two homes. My strong work ethic, various skills, and attention to detail led the couple to hire me as the caretaker of their property. For the past three years, I have been caretaking for their main residence as well as their large vacation rental, which is located on the same property. I live in and maintain an apartment that is attached to the primary residence on the lower floor. This allows me to be easily available for all the work needed on the two different homes and yard. I am responsible for all aspects of maintenance on the property, as well as housekeeping and domestic duties for both homes. My day starts off walking the grounds of the entire three acres of landscape. This is a very fertile land in which plants grow at an extremely fast pace, with a rainfall of over 200 inches a year. The landscaping keeps me very busy. I start by picking up fallen leaves from over 40 palm trees on the property. Then work my way around each garden pulling weeds, trimming shrubbery and trees and maintaining vegetation on the property. The gardens on the property are full of tropical flowers: spider lilies, ginger flowers, hibiscus and orchids. Due to the enormity and high maintenance of the estate it requires constant attention on my part. My interest in agriculture has also helped me to maintain an organic fruit orchard on the land. We grow oranges, limes, avocados and bananas, which I prune and harvest on a weekly basis. The orchard takes constant observation making sure the irrigation systems are working properly and that the fruit is ripe and ready for harvesting. I’m also responsible for all the handyman maintenance issues that arise on the property. From simple repairs on door handles to basic electrical and plumbing up keep. Both homes are ocean front and they require constant maintenance. On a weekly basis I go over the two homes for painting issues. I do a lot of preventative maintenance, sealing and repainting the both homes to keep them water tight in the harsh tropical conditions here. I’ve also painted most of the interiors and exteriors on both homes. I’m very handy and good at determining the source of problems and figuring out solutions in a timely manner if anything were to happen. I also prepare and clean the vacation rental for weekly guests and I’m on-call to assist the renters during their stay on the property. My current employer often leaves for extended periods of time throughout the year. During these intervals I take full responsibility for the care and safety of the pets; I love animals and really enjoy this part of the job. Finally, I also provide security for the property. I monitor the property throughout the day, while working on the landscape. At night I make sure that both homes are secure by turning on lights and locking doors. I enjoy my current caretaking position in Kauai; however, I miss my family that lives on the mainland, and I would like to be closer to them in California.
