Alaska

[Contact info available to subscribers] needs help. We are a 30 acre shellfish farm located across Kachemak Bay from Homer. I grow mostly Pacific oysters but I also grow mussels, scallops and clams by the suspended culture methods (not on bottom or on the beach). Life is on the water on skiffs or on the docks. Some tasks are done on the beach. They involve cleaning, sorting, and counting oysters. The suggested length of stay is negotiable, but a seven day trial period would be wise to determine compatibility. Five to six hours would be a good day in work exchange. Accommodations will be on my 42 foot fishing vessel, or on a 36-foot landing craft, in docks, in tents or in the woods at a tent camp. Children and pets are negotiable. The farm is seven miles across the water from Homer, or seven miles from Seldovia by road. I supply transportation to the farm. Hi Gary, my wife Dee and I want to thank you. We have gotten two great positions via your publication. The first, immediately after my retirement, was as caretakers of Dripping Springs, a beautiful park in the Organ Mountains above Las Cruces, NM. We were volunteers for The Bureau of Land Management in the Visitor’s Center a couple of days per week; provided with nice housing and a monthly stipend. It is at the base of beautiful mountains, overlooking Las Cruces; and includes hiking trails, waterfalls, birds, butterflies and flowers. The sunsets are breathtaking! Dear Gary, I’ve been enjoying the Gazette for quite a while and one thing puzzles me. There seem to be a significant number of ads where the property owner has pets but will not welcome a caretaker’s pets. This seems a bit hypocritical. While it is understandable to be hesitant about having more animals on the property, and to fear bad interaction with existing animal residents, I think there is a risk of losing out on really good applicants as a result. I, for one, won’t apply to ads that say no pets. Yet I have a pet that would not interfere with the owners’ pets in most situations as described. I would like to suggest that more of your ad placers consider making pets negotiable, rather than ruling them out completely. They might decide that pet fish are OK. Or a cat that stays indoors in the caretaker’s residence. Or they might take a pet deposit like landlords do. Another thing to bear in mind is that the more inflexible a property owner conveys him/herself to be in the ad, the fewer applicants they will have. In my experience, people prefer to work for people who are understanding, flexible and kind. That’s just my opinion. K. J. Raleigh, NC.

Thanks for writing and sharing your opinion, Karl. There are various reasons why some property owners do not want other pets on their property. If you see an ad for a position that you’re interested in applying for, you might want to discuss your individual situation with the property owner.

We are looking to exchange homesteading chores for an 800 square-foot cabin on 76 acres in “Sunny Kapoho” (average of 75 inches of rain, mostly in the early morning hours) on the Big Island. We would also consider recurrent seasonal stays for part of the year and occasionally we may be open to single people and short term (three – five months) stays. The cabin is set back about 300 feet from the ocean, and is about 50 feet above sea level. The 20×40 foot cabin has an outside shower, chest refrigerator, propane oven, and the bathroom consists of a composting bucket, which is under a conventional toilet seat. The cabin is single wall cedar construction, and three of the walls are mostly window, which allow in a lot of natural light and allow for enjoyment of the panoramic views of the ocean, jungle. The work exchange entails watering the organic gardens, feeding the chickens and collecting the eggs, feeding and milking the goats, taking the buck out to be tethered and fed, and feeding the cats and dog. The group will mainly work on the preparations for the lighting of the Imagine Peace tower on the island; which is an outdoor work of art conceived by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon.
