Good day, Mr. Gary and Gazette Team: I must say, I would have never thought I would be the one who writes a gratitude letter to you and your staff about accepting a caretaker’s position. I have been a subscriber to the Gazette for some time now and had always envied those who write in and say exciting things about caretaker positions they’ve accepted. Well that very same thing just happened to Laura and me, WOW! After putting together a short resume, we replied to a couple of ads in the Gazette. We had several responses, however most wanted experienced and trained folks. Then one day just recently, a response came to me requesting a trustworthy down-to-earth couple to take care of their estate. After talking a few days, Laura and I decided to give it a chance and we both were very nervous. We both have professional jobs in the inspection field and were reluctant to take a chance but we did. So we contacted the property owners again. They immediately flew Laura and me to their estate on Friday for a weekend interview. Who would have thought “Cajun Caretakers @ 9,000 feet in Colorado”? The visit was a very pleasant experience for Laura and I and the homeowners are so wonderful. We returned to New Orleans on Sunday. Over a couple of days it was obvious that we both felt a desire to make a life changing decision to accept their offer and move to Colorado. Our transfer will be the last week of August 2008. Galiene Dennenbroek

When I was a little girl, before I attended kindergarten, I dreamed of living in an old-fashioned wooden wagon pulled by a horse in front of it. I put on old Spanish-style clothes and pretended that I was a gypsy or having high tea. At that time, we were living just outside Amsterdam and we had nearly 20 cats. One day my uncle, who was a captain on big boats, brought home a lynx. I climbed on the “kitty” and he became my horse. One day I made a drawing of a landscape and, as I looked at it, I wondered, “Where is this place?” As teenager I went to a lovely school in the center of the city. I went to an art school for young talented children. We received a lot of instruction in the art disciplines and we also learned to take care of animals. After completing my education, I became a costume/fashion designer and an artist. In the late 1980’s, I became a supervisor for rock groups in Russia. While there, I lived with a Russian family whom I visit each winter. That experience really opened my eyes: we had to wait in line for food with the coupons that the family received from the government. After I returned to Amsterdam, I met my ex-husband at one of his exhibitions in the Netherlands. We lived, for ten years, in Brooklyn, New York. With my background as a designer for theater and dance, I worked primarily as a draper and an assistant designer for Broadway and the opera. Unfortunately, our great community fell apart after the tragedy of 9/11 and we had to move. After my divorce, I ended up living in several different states but then returned to Europe. I lived in Bayreuth, Germany where I again worked for the opera. Unfortunately, I became seriously ill and returned to my family in Holland so I could fully recover. I returned to work for the Dutch opera and, while I was visiting with friends and colleagues, one of them told me about The Caretaker Gazette. At that point, I realized that I had a choice: go back to work for the opera or give my life a twist. At that point, I had a deep spiritual experience and decided to give my life a twist: I subscribed to The Caretaker Gazette. In my first issue of the Gazette, there was an ad for a caretaking position on an organic goat farm in New Mexico. I am a life-long vegetarian so the position appealed to me. I went for the idea of changing from a designer to a goat farmer. I had a great conversation with Gary C. Dunn, the publisher of The Caretaker Gazette, when I told him about my disappointing experience using various websites rather than an established publication. After responding to the New Mexico position, I flew from Schiphol, Amsterdam, the Netherlands to Albuquerque, where I took the local shuttle service to a hostel. In the back of the hostel lived people who were working in exchange for living at the hostel. These interesting and diverse people included: a man who wrote a book, a Native American who tried to teach me his native language, and a woman who had undertaken her trip after her husband passed away. A few days later, the woman who owned the goat farm picked me up. On the way back to the farm, we picked up several goats, and a woman, waiting at the airport, who would also be working at the farm. We first stayed with a friend of the woman who owned the goat farm. This friend was like a sister to me; she had built her own adobe home and was a life-long raw food eater. After leaving her home, we then went to visit a Native American community where we were given a lecture on goat raising and donated some goats. After all of these experiences and new impressions, it was in New Mexico where I finally found the landscape of my childhood drawing. I finally realized that place in my dreams as a young girl was the rural areas of New Mexico. We finally arrived at the goat farm in the middle of the night. Although it was very late, the people who lived on the farm were awake and came out to call “Welcome” to us. There were 96 goats and four sheep. There were chickens, cats, and dogs everywhere. There was a place for the goats, a place where we milked, and the cheese-making department. I learned to milk the goats and how to make cheese. There was a garden where I went to gather vegetables for dinner. There were several cabins on the property and I lived in one of them. I would often watch the goats and the dogs would walk together through the desert landscape: it was an unusual, beautiful and poetic image. After leaving the goat farm, I went to Albuquerque where I taught in the art department at the University of New Mexico. At night, I worked in a center for children with disabilities. At this point, I am back in Holland for a short visit but I would love to go back to the United States to live in a place like New Mexico or Massachusetts. Right now, I am looking in The Caretaker Gazette and trying to decide where to go next. I would love a paid situation because, as we say in Dutch, “the pot is empty now.” I’m confident that I will find my next great adventure in the pages of the Gazette.
