Like the owners themselves, I first saw the house from the road, speeding between one hard-to-pronounce Welsh town and another. Traversing a green valley, you get a flickering glimpse through the hedgerow of a gaunt-looking building with crumbling chimney stacks, buried under Virginia creeper, dominating a landscape of mysterious beauty, before the trees close over and the view is gone. This was Nanteos Mansion, “my” stately home! “Wouldn’t it be great to live there?” I asked my wife, innocently. An impossible dream. But someone else was listening, and now I do! I came to Estate Management late in life after a career in media. I was raised in London, but my mother married into a “county” family, and I spent school vacations at their beautiful manor house near Cheltenham, with its own village and cricket field. It was built the year Columbus landed on Hispaniola. The family lived a Jeeves and Wooster lifestyle of weekend house parties and croquet on the lawn, and kept a retinue of grumbling servants. Each evening, we changed into formal dress before sitting down to a silver-service dinner, usually with a Lord or a Bishop at the table. It was a world away from my Bohemian student life in 1960s Chelsea. Just as I was growing up, they sold the manor to a developer, burning a small hole in my heart forever. I majored in history and my passion for beautiful homes and gardens just grew, but the necessary millions did not materialize for me! Years later, in the 1990s, my agency went broke, we lost our home, and I found it hard to get back in business. I entered the “gray economy” as an hourly-paid gardener and housekeeper for second homeowners in the Cotswolds, a well-heeled rural retreat for “Royals” and City types. Borrowing their houses for a few hours was the next best thing to owning them, and I rapidly acquired new skills, before the price of gasoline forced me to find a steady job. I learned however that rich folks need just as much caring for as poor ones! It hit me one day on the patio of a house where I was working. The pump in the fishpond had fallen over, and I put my hand in the water to right it, and the owner said to me, “Paul, you would never get me to do that!” This was a man whose passion was fly fishing! He paid me five pounds an hour to press his underpants, and he tipped well, so, whenever his intruder alarm went off, I would drive twenty miles to turn it off. I realized I loved doing this work. My wife and I bought a small farm cheaply in Wales but soon found the going hard. There was no market for our produce. Despite the booming economy of the Blair years, Wales is still one of the poorest regions in Europe. Eventually, I got so depressed, my wife asked me sweetly to leave home. Within a week, I parlayed my experience into the job I still have; Estate Manager at Nanteos Mansion. It came with a damp apartment, a modest salary and responsibility to care for one of the most important Georgian houses in Wales. Nanteos was built in 1738 for the Powell family, a wealthy landowning dynasty. Death and taxes wiped them out in the 1950s. For years, Nanteos was owned by dreamers who had no reserves to pay bills. By the 1970s it was falling down, but an owner managed to obtain a grant to put on a new roof. It saved the house, at a time when others were left to fall into ruins. The central core of the house is habitable, and is now a Bed and Breakfast and a venue for weddings and business meetings. I have responsibility for marketing and organizing those, plus I do the cooking, which can mean working a twenty-hour day. The owners live abroad, in Japan. They have never done anything like this, so my job is a big one: to obtain the best advice, to research and plan business strategy, to report on how to go about everything, from environmental policy and supervising building restorers, to mowing grass and monitoring tree safety in the thirty-acre grounds, all that is left of the estate. But to sit out of an evening watching the westerly light fade across a landscape planned two hundred years past by craftsmen who had faith in more than just a three-year investment horizon, enjoying a well-chilled bottle of Chardonnay before strolling home to bed through mirrored halls and rooms built for giants, is worth every penny. I’m planning to move on soon, because I don’t have the capability to run a $600 a night ’boutique’ hotel, which is to be Nanteos’ fate for the next few years. I’ll be looking, though, for somewhere just as atmospheric, to indulge my love of history, art and architecture and to care for time-poor rich folk, their gardens and their beautiful possessions.
