Letters to the Editor

You sent an email update for a job that we responded to and got the job. We have been here since last May. The job is going well. Without the Gazette, we would not have found this opportunity, so we thank you very much. We will certainly be renewing our subscription when we are ready to find our next caretaker opportunity through the Gazette. Carl and Janine M., Port Leyden,

Ny

Carl and Janine, that’s great news! Please let us know how it works out and if we can do a Caretaker Profile story about your experiences there in a future issue of the Gazette.

Gary, I just wanted to give you an update on my help-wanted ad responses as I am quite pleased. I only received two calls; however, they were quality calls and one looks like quite a good fit for my arrangement. The subscribers are quite qualified and serious, and I am thrilled that I placed my help-wanted ad with you! You can use this as a testimonial. Sincerely, Jill S., Tampa, FL

Jill, I’m glad to read that you received serious, qualified responses to your help-wanted ad that ran in the Gazette. If you find that you need to rerun and update your ad, please let us know and we’ll be happy to publish your ad in a future issue.

Dear Dunn Family, I’ve been subscribing to, reading, and enjoying The Caretaker Gazette since sometime around 1998 (maybe even 1997?). I applied for a position that was placed in your publication back in 1999, and by 2000, I had been accepted by the property owner as his selected choice to be his property caretaker. He went through “MANY” applications for this position before finally narrowing his selection down to two potential candidates. “I won!” That was over two decades ago! The property was sold last year to new owners who have generously allowed me to continue on as the resident property caretaker/security guard. As long as I have lived here, I have paid no rent, and I’ve been blessed to live on the property as if I own it! I can do anything I would do if it were mine, including the building of my own home! I also have the freedom to run my own small self-employed business as a handyman and building and grounds maintenance man. Thank you for making this happen through your awesome publication. Thank you Caretaker Gazette! John H., O Brien, OR

Thanks for your letter and for sharing your wonderful experiences as a property caretaker, John. We’re glad that The Caretaker Gazette played a role in helping you to achieve your great lifestyle. Please spread the good word about the Gazette!

Wow, were you ever correct when you said I would get a response to my cat/house sitting ad! I came home from a few days away to find nearly 40 emails and several letters in response – I haven’t even gotten my copy of The Caretaker Gazette in the mail yet so it came as a wonderful surprise. And, honestly, how do you ever even choose? They all (or most all) sound absolutely great and are the kind of people you would like to know and have in your home. Thank you; thank you for providing such a terrific service. Nancy M. Cedar Key, FL

Nancy, more and more property owners like you, tell us that they have found their best house sitters by advertising in the Gazette. Please keep us in mind the next time you’ll need a cat/house sitter for your place in Florida, and please tell your neighbors about the success you have had using our publication in case they need a cat/house sitting person.

Iceland

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED from April 20, 30, 2024 in a beautiful forest located in the countryside district of Borgarbyggo, West Iceland, doing nature-conservation and environment-oriented tasks. [Contact info available to subscribers] (an Icelandic non-governmental, non-profit volunteer organization) has been cooperating with the Icelandic Forest Service and our groups of volunteers have been helping out for more than 15 years, with very good results for the participants, the projects and the Icelandic nature conservation and reforestation efforts. The countryside here is in a unique natural environment with a breathtaking landscape, between glaciers and lava fields. The place is like an oasis in the desert, as the weather there is often better than in the surroundings. The area’s landscape, nature and culture reflect this heritage and bring history to life. There are many possibilities for outdoor recreation in a true natural paradise. The area is home to the most powerful hot spring in Europe, Deildartunguhver. Among the natural wonders nearby are the Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls, where water pours out of a lava field over a length of one kilometer. Additionally, the Hallmundarhraun lava field is among the deepest and best known in Iceland. Langjokull (Long Glacier), the second largest glacier in Iceland, expands over 950 km² and its highest point is 1,355 meters. In addition to the natural wonders, this area is also famous for being one of the first settled locations in Iceland and featured in some of the oldest Icelandic sagas. Historically, its natural warmth made the location an early settlement adding even more depth to its incredible saga and Viking tales that surround the place. The region can be regarded as the setting for most of the Icelandic sagas. The main tasks will be to maintain hiking paths, build stairs, make, and put up signs. Volunteers will also put up benches and tables in the forest. Other tasks will be to trim branches and beautify groves that are located near the hiking paths. Well maintained paths enable people to visit these amazing areas without damaging the surroundings and in addition our volunteers’ work helps to improve safety for visitors. No previous experience is necessary, but the work is demanding and requires that volunteers be in good physical condition. As it is outdoors work, volunteers shall be ready to adapt and be flexible with the working and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or activities planned. The weather is unpredictable, and it can be cold and/or rainy, so be prepared to experience all kinds of weather. We recommend bringing good walking shoes/boots, warm and/or waterproof clothes (underlayers, overcoats, scarves, gloves, and hats), as most of the tasks and activities take place outside. Property Caretaker Profile

Roy Fox: Historic Museum Caretaker Address: [Contact info available to subscribers] Date of Birth: 6/23/39 Interests: history, radio, reading and writing Quote: “This is my way of life!” – Roy Fox

Roy Fox in his King Manor office

Situated in the middle of eleven beautiful acres in the center of Jamaica, Queens, New York, a few short blocks from the Long Island Railroad, stands the 18th century home of Rufus King (1755-1827). For over thirty years, the home and grounds have been lovingly cared for by Roy Fox, known as Fox, the live-in caretaker and resident historian of the King Manor House. Rufus King, one of the original framers and signers of the United States Constitution, was an early abolitionist and an outspoken opponent of slavery. Fox explains that although the oldest part of the home dates to the mid-1700’s, King purchased the home and ninety acres in 1805. According to Fox, Rufus King made numerous improvements to the home and property, including planting a row of 13 stately oak trees, one tree for each of the thirteen original colonies. Fox points out several of the magnificent oaks that survive to this day, providing shade and adding beauty to the home, just as they did over 200 years ago. How does one find such an interesting and unique caretaking position? In Fox’s case, it was a combination of serendipity and necessity. After a successful career as a popular radio host in Chicago, Detroit, and Pittsburgh, Fox and his then-wife, Mary, relocated to the New York City area when Mary accepted a position involving the restoration of the amusement park carousel in Prospect Park, located in Brooklyn, New York. Fox’s wife came east first and began work in Prospect Park. When Fox left Detroit to join Mary in Brooklyn, the pair needed to find a home. Fox soon learned from his wife’s boss (the Head of Prospect Park), that a recently restored historic home was in need of a caretaker. Fox’s interest was piqued, and he quickly scheduled an interview with the Park’s Commissioner for the newly formed caretaker position for the recently restored King Manor House. In 1989 Fox was made an offer he couldn’t refuse: a rent-free living opportunity in the historic landmark, King Manor. There was no job description, either verbal or written, for the position. As Fox recalls, the Park’s Commissioner told him: “The job’s yours and take good care of the place.” That was 31 years ago, and Fox has been there ever since, becoming an integral part of the King Manor Museum. Fox recalls his first night in King Manor, with Mary. There was a persistent knocking sound on the sloped ceiling above their bed, in the master bedroom. According to Fox, Mary asked if Fox knew the source of the knocking. Without missing a beat, Fox said, “That’s Rufus King and he wants his house back without us in it.” Fox keeps the spirit of Rufus King alive for visitors, delighting them with tales of King and passionate re-enactments of King’s anti-slavery speeches. In addition to living rent-free as the caretaker of King Manor, all of Fox’s utilities except for his phone are paid for. Outside of the grounds are several local stores within walking distance where Fox can buy what he needs as far as food and other provisions. The previous caretakers of King Manor were a couple who lived in the cottage adjacent to the main home. When the home was restored, the cottage was made part of the museum. As caretaker, Fox lives in a large apartment located on the top floor of the three-story museum. The space, formerly the servants’ quarters during the years when Rufus King and his family occupied the home, was renovated for the property caretaker. Fox’s apartment has a spacious kitchen and dining area, two bedrooms, a bathroom, an office, and several smaller rooms. A massive potted tree, floor to ceiling in height, nearly fills one of the smaller rooms. Fox explains that he covers it in lights for the Christmas season. In addition, behind a door, in a small hallway, one can still see the original home’s window and exterior facade. A large room functions as a storage area for some of the museum’s historic artifacts that are not currently on display. Fox’s dedication to preserving and nurturing the legacy of Rufus King has made him a knowledgeable and passionate caretaker of the historic home. In addition, his nearly thirty-year successful radio career has helped to make him a unique caretaker who always has a wonderful story to share with King Manor visitors, young and old. His nomadic life as a radio host took Fox from a small radio station in Henderson, Kentucky to Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey and then to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where Fox hosted “The Fox’s Den”, a successful, long-running show on KDKA. Fox recalls that he was on air when he first “met” his wife, Mary, a successful radio producer. As a nod to their radio careers and their many fans, the two were married on the air. With his emotive voice and steady stream of anecdotes, Fox still sounds as if he would be as successful on air today as he was thirty years ago.

King Manor Museum

Roy Fox in the dining room of King Manor

Fox is a voracious reader, and the walls of his caretaker apartment are lined with bookshelves. The shelves, which fill each room and every hallway of the apartment, hold Fox’s collection of 4,000 books. Fox proudly announces that his 4,000 book collection bests Rufus King’s 3,200 book collection. Fox has no television and is a true bibliophile and historian. Many of his books are American and British histories. According to Fox, he knows where each book in his massive collection is located, and he can find a volume without consulting an index. Fox loves histories and biographies and takes time to “talk” to his books as he reads, circling passages and writing responses to particularly interesting paragraphs. Fox says he is never bored when there is any downtime at King Manor. A black and white rescue, Super Cat, is the resident cat and Fox’s constant companion. Super Cat knows her way around King Manor and will make her way down to the first floor on occasion, surprising and greeting guests. Fox delights in showing arriving visitors to King Manor a metal exterior fence that surrounds the manor grounds and property and was installed during restoration. Written in steel and spanning the length of the fence is, as Fox describes it, “the greatest preamble to a constitution ever written.” Walking the length of the fence, Fox reads the inscription: “WE, the PEOPLE of the UNITED STATES, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” During a tour of King Manor, Fox shows off the formal dining room, built by Rufus King in 1810. The room features several original Federalist era design elements, including a curved wall at one end of the room, elegant crown molding, and an imposing carved fireplace mantel. Fox assists in hosting the live music concerts that are held at King Manor Museum. Depending upon the time of year and the weather, the concerts are either held on the porch of the home or inside, in the formal dining room in front of the curved wall which serves as a stage setting. During Rufus King’s years there, the home was the site of many concerts, and, to this day, the acoustics are excellent. According to Fox, classical, jazz, and historic music ensembles have all performed at King Manor. The historic home is also host to festivals, workshops, family programs, and community events. Fox, of course, is on hand to assist, sharing interesting anecdotes. Preparing for and helping to host the naturalization ceremony for new United States citizens that is held each September on the grounds of King Manor is another duty that Fox speaks of with great pride. As he describes it, after the ceremony, Fox welcomes all new citizens into the King Manor formal dining room. There, the new citizens are invited to sign their names on a large replica of the United States Constitution under the names of the original founding fathers and signers of the Constitution, including Rufus King, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton. Fox recalls that it is a tremendously moving ceremony and a very proud moment for the new citizens. In the manor’s library, a life-size statue of Rufus King is seated at King’s original desk. The desk, which dates to 1796, predates 44 states and was restored in 2019, in time for the museum’s 120th anniversary in 2020. In addition to King’s original desk, there are also four floor-to-ceiling bookcases designed by King and built into the surrounding walls of the library. The bookcases, which originally contained over 5,000 inches of shelf space, were custom-made to hold King’s extensive collection of books. Each bookcase has two floor-level drawers where King could store maps and other important papers. The bookcases have glass front doors with curtains to protect King’s book collection from sunlight and dust. King also added locks so he could secure his books at night. As many property caretakers know firsthand, historic homes dating to the 1700’s and 1800’s require near constant maintenance and upkeep. For larger tasks, Fox will speak with Kelsey Brow, the Executive Director of King Manor. According to Fox, Kelsey shares his passion for King Manor and nurturing and keeping alive the legacy of Rufus King. Fox explains that Kelsey has been able to secure funding for larger maintenance, restoration, and repair projects for the museum. In the case of smaller items, Fox contacts vendors and learns from repair people what needs to be done and how to do it. The next time issues arise, Fox is able to apply what he learned and do many of the tasks himself. Fox has spent over three decades enhancing Rufus King’s legacy through guided tours of the 29-room 22,000 square foot mansion. Fox is actively involved in educational and community programs as well as dramatic readings of King’s work. A passion for history, a love of people, a dedication to lifelong learning, and a commitment to keeping alive Rufus King’s legacy, all combine to make Roy Fox an excellent caretaker and steward of the King Manor Museum.

XENIA STUDIO began with the quest to find a beautiful yet simple pair of earrings that was affordable but not fast-fashion. When owner Vanessa couldn’t find what she was looking for, she taught herself how to make her own jewelry. The result is a line of unique statement jewelry that focuses on harmonious combinations of shapes in pleasing color palettes. Xenia Studio’s mission is to provide affordable jewelry that is expressive and transformative, simple yet meaningful. Special adornments to accompany you wherever life takes you.
