Letters to the Editor
Thank you for the opportunity to re-subscribe to the Gazette. At this time I am on a long-term caretaking job on an unbelievably beautiful piece of property, in a very premier location. I am the property manager, security, maintenance and repair caretaker. I will need you once again, after I am finished here. I had to get rid of some bad people, from this multi-million dollar piece of property and bring it back to full luster as I have, and now maintain. There are still some security issues so I will stay here to keep the peace, and serenity that is now present. It was a hard road up to the this point due to the people in habitation of a steel barn on the property and the 90-year-old, single female owner, unable to stop them and their heavy methamphetamine addiction. However, it is a paradise here, at the present time. I even fixed their completely destroyed swimming pool and you should see it shimmer! It was black! I had to do a two stage drain and chlorine, acid wash as the sides were stained black. Why am I telling you all this? Well, for one, your website is what inspired me to do what I am doing now. Also so you know, there are a few of us who visit your site that are the real ”deal”. We are doers and do not procrastinate a task but see them through with precision. Hope you are there when I need you for my next caretaker gig. Take care, Kevin D., Ashland OR

Take care and thanks again.

Such great news for you, the new caretakers, and all of us here! Our Gazette help-wanted ad achieved great results all around! Thank you! Sarah J. New Hampshire

Iceland
[Contact info available to subscribers] VOLUNTEERS needed from April 19 to May 3, 2018. Our host for this project is a farmer’s family on the south shore of Iceland close to the town of Vik, the farmers cultivate carrots and keep cows. The farm is located in a beautiful area surrounded by mountains and glaciers to the north and near the Atlantic Ocean to the south. The inhabitants here live in constant threat of volcanic eruptions and the area was covered by ashes during the recent eruptions in 2010 and 2011.This is the sixth year that [Contact info available to subscribers] volunteers will have the unique opportunity to get to know and explore this traditional Icelandic farm. There will be various tasks, depending on the weather, some cleaning tasks, for instance clearing fields of rocks, fences, trash, beautifying the area around and removing an invasive species called – Rumex Longifolius; which has been used in Iceland in order to control soil erosion and revegetate eroded areas; but in some places its spread is more than desirable and being a foreign specie – it endangers the native species. This weed can remain viable for a long time, is helpful for vegetative reproduction, and adaptable to different environments. It is primarily a weed of grassland, and in this habitat it benefits from agricultural practices which lead to disturbance or eutrophication. It reduces production from the field and lowers the feeding value of the grass to the animals. Those who are interested can help out with farm activities, such as taking care of the animals, cultivating potatoes and vegetables. Participants are invited to take a look at the cows in the stalls, assist in milking them if interested or just tending to them in general. The group will also be taking care of trees, cutting and planting them. Volunteers will stay in an equipped flat, in a sleeping bag accommodation, sharing rooms. Please bring your own sleeping bag. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. We are truly a Volunteers Farm because every piece of the farm has been built by volunteers! We started our operations back in July 2013, in a Dragon fruit and Durian farm at the foot of Jugra Hills, then we moved to a 10 acre farm in Kuala Selangor and we are now located in Janda Baik, which is 50km north of Kuala Lumpur (one hour drive from KL). Janda Baik is a traditional Malay village in Bentong, Pahang with “Californian weather” (sunny with a cool breeze) and that makes working in the fields very bearable. The temperature ranges from 32C in the afternoon to 18-22C at night. Our Farm is situated in a three acre plot of land and it has one acre of fresh water pond (water source from the mountains) which we now use for fish rearing with a natural feed. Our farm’s goal is to become a sustainable, self-sufficient farm and our aspiration is to be an education hub on natural farming, permaculture, aquaponics/vaquaponics, natural construction and a community development center. At our farm, we apply permaculture principles, effective microorganisms, agnihotra together with other natural farming techniques. We also have a few satellite farms in the vicinity which we help to manage. Our edible garden has many varieties of herbs, vegetables and fruits like mangosteen, ciku, coconuts, cempedak, papayas, calamansi, lemons, sugarcane, pineapples, passionfruit and more. Our livestock consist of chickens, geese, ducks and rabbits. We are affiliated with local educational institutions such as the University Putra Malaysia and oversea universities for internship programs on agriculture, environmental engineering and natural construction. We are currently in need of people from various backgrounds who have experience in one or more of the following: 1) natural construction and building huts; 2) food production, fermentation, baking, cooking; 3) sales and marketing (social media); 4) house-keeping; 5) arts and crafts; 6) natural farm work: and 7) natural feed production. We welcome especially those who can stay on a longer term basis of three to six months for internship and team leader projects, or anyone who exhibits entrepreneurship related to organic and sustainable practices. Where Monkeys Roar From Mountaintops – a Profile of Chris Address: [Contact info available to subscribers] Interests: Being a sculptor. See: [Contact info available to subscribers] Quote: “True art makes the divine silence in the soul break into applause.” Hafiz
Chris Isner with his English/Spanish dictionary
I was caretaking a hillside property in Los Angeles when the owner unexpectedly decided to return home early, and I needed to find a new place, quickly. What to do? I Googled “caretaker positions” and discovered The Caretaker Gazette, of course! I immediately subscribed to the Gazette and then read this Help-Wanted ad in my first issue online, and responded to it immediately:
Costa Rica
A BAMBOO HOUSE is available for you in the mountains of Costa Rica, on nine acres, secluded with a 10 foot waterfall on the property. We need long-term caretakers, with minimal duties. We have many fruit trees, no electricity currently – but it is coming soon, a gravity water system, and composting toilet. We are 20 minutes from Dominical Beach and surfing. The caretaker must be reliable and responsible and be a sustainable lifestyle type. Please email for pictures at…
My initial email message led to a phone call with the property owner. We chatted a while, I outlined my experience and skill set, and we agreed that it would be perfect for me. So, within just a few hours I had secured a position and booked a flight to Costa Rica. Three days later I was living in paradise. The property was an organic farm of sorts in the pristine Tinamastes Valley between the inland city of San Isidro de General and the coastal surfing town, Dominical. Located on Costa Rica’s amazingly beautiful Central Pacific coastline, the small village of Dominical is a surfer’s paradise where waves can reach over 10 feet high. An experienced surfer’s beach, Dominical lies some 40 kilometers south of Playa de Jaco in Puntarenas province. Attracting surfers not only from across the country, but from all over the world, Dominical is a great place to lie back and enjoy the various activities and water sports found around here. There was a funky bamboo house built by the owner, but I lodged in a derelict old RV in the jungle that I shared with a couple of giant geckos that sang like birds at night. While the house was connected to the electric and water mains, my light was a lantern and my shower was a waterfall. The Swiss commune that was up the road has water rights to the potable freshwater springs but they allow the community free access. Life was good. The owner of the property worked back in the US half the year and there really wasn’t all that much to do. I worked on a few projects – plastic tarp greenhouses, mulch rotation, bamboo harvesting – and I did some gardening, but the heavy work of incessant weed-whacking and orchard pruning was done by a local guy. More than anything I was there for security, just a presence lest the property be ransacked. While far safer than anyplace in the United States, there does seem to be a peculiar attitude towards thievery in Costa Rica. Maybe it’s assumed that those who don’t utilize and secure their property have too much to know what to do with, so people feel justified in sharing it. Who knows? But it is a good idea to keep belongings secured at all times. There is nothing like walking down a red dirt road with a machete on your hip and thirty pounds of bananas on your shoulder while thunder rumbles and monkeys roar from the mountaintops! I fell in love with the place. I could literally spend entire days watching amazing birds, bugs and lizards, cooking amazing foods in the outdoor kitchen, beefing up my less-than-amazing Espanol with my English/Spanish dictionary, and brewing awesomely amazing local coffee. I grew zucchini the size of my thigh and hung bags of produce on the fence every few days for my next door neighbors, who in turn left me fresh milk and eggs and homemade cheese. I carved a bunch of Virgin Mary gourds and left them on the neighbor ladies’ porches. I made friends on the thirty-minute bus rides to and from the beach. Noni juice is had by letting the fruit rot in the sun in a water jug, and then pouring out the liquid that collects at the bottom. I would take a shot of that foul juice every morning as there is just nothing better for you, but it’s definitely one of the most gruesome things I’ve ever tasted. Whoever said that the nectar of the gods is sweet was a romantic fool. Fruits from the peach palm (pejibaye), on the other hand, are lovely when boiled, with a bean-like consistency, delicious with a bit of salt and chili sauce. Harvesting them, however, requires caution. The palm trunks bristle with needle-sharp, four-inch spines, like a giant cactus, and punctures from those spines never stop itching.
Here was Chris’s Funky Paradise in the Tinamastes Valley
Chris getting ready to surf Dominical
Oh, right, itching! I did a lot of that. Mosquitos weren’t really a problem but the jaquistas were murder. These are tiny little biters that fly around in swarms and you can barely see them or feel them biting. But at night those little bites become a maddening, inflamed fire. Sitting by the creek one day, scratching madly, I was playing with a little lump of red clay and remembered that calamine lotion worked on my childhood poison oak rashes by drying them out. I had a Eureka moment and immediately stripped and slathered myself with a full-body clay mask. The results were almost instantaneous, no more itch! And I noticed that the clay kept the bugs away as well. With daily clay masks, my skin became gorgeous. But I soon found that there is a plant that works much better. Jackass bitters AKA tres puntas, botanical name Neurolaena lobata, is a common weed in Costa Rica and making a tea from those bitter leaves was excellent insect repellent, even works great sprayed in the garden as an insecticide and fungicide. Drinking the tea prevents parasitic infection of all sorts as well as having many other medicinal qualities. A mile up the dirt road from the farm is the little village of Tumbas, named for the many ancient tombs in the valley, often unearthed when someone digs a hole for a septic tank. Apparently this valley was quite sacred to the indigenous people. The village is on a gravel road running down the mountain from Tinamastes with just a church, a schoolhouse, and about a dozen houses, and further down the road is the path up to the incredible six-hundred foot Diamanté Falls. Located near the mountain town of Tinamastes, Diamanté, at 200 meters in height, is Costa Rica’s biggest waterfall. Above that majestic waterfall is a huge overhang cave with its own twin one-hundred foot waterfalls cascading down in front of the opening. This is a privately owned reserve and the cave is fitted out with beds, a kitchen and full bathroom facilities. Staying the night in that cave was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. But this is the jungle and during the arduous hike up to Diamanté Falls, I was viciously attacked by a wild tolomuco! (Imagine a giant black weasel the size of a dog.) I froze in my tracks as it came charging at me out of the jungle, fangs slavering, beady eyes filled with demonic malevolence! But for some reason it veered off at the last minute and disappeared through the trees. My Tico friend, Miguel, who was with me laughed uproariously when he saw the look on my face and explained that tolomucos are very smart and playful, making good pets, and that I startled it as much as it startled me. Senor Tolomuco was probably telling his friends about the crazy gringo who attacked him! As I replayed the scene in my head, he did indeed seem much more like a playful, grinning land otter loping by than some bloodthirsty beast intent on tearing me limb from limb. Back in Tumbas, one enterprising lady cut a hole in her living room wall and opened a roadside convenience store. She had a rather pathetic marker-scrawled cardboard sign hung on her fence and I thought it only fitting that the only business in town should have a real sign, so I carved and painted a beautiful one for her on a wavy plank of cedar: PULPERIA Los CIPRESES. She was ecstatic and refused my refusal of store discounts. Word got around. Everyone in town knew who I was and smiled at me after that. I never even had to stick my thumb out when walking up the steep mountain incline to the highway bus stop, people would just stop and pick me up. The shopkeeper tried for months to set me up with the schoolteacher. The schoolteacher put me in touch with the owner of an adventure tour company who offered to show me some waterfalls. I thought it curious on the hike up that I had to get buckled into a harness….and then all of the sudden I was rappelling down sheer waterfall cliffs! I met all sorts of wonderful people, saw all sorts of incredible things. Anyway, that’s how you get by and make friends in foreign countries: give of yourself and don’t be shy. If anyone has a hankering to live in the tropics, I’d highly recommend Costa Rica. There are cheaper places, but Costa Rica is largely free of the crime, corruption and crushing poverty endemic to so many other Latin American countries. It is a functioning democracy and Ticos take great pride in it. You just don’t see piles of garbage everywhere and the police won’t rob you. For single caretaker men, most of the male residents of San Isidro de General live and work in either the capitol, San Jose, or in the US, so there are six women for every man in that city, just FYI. Thank you so much, Gary Dunn, for your top-notch service. Guess where I’m going to retire!

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005, was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. During the start of the year 2005, the handwriting on the wall began and the books closed on this historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then, became my pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true happenings during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the open range while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into usable cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later in the other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among wild cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin’ out in Arizona’s beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever dreamed of being a cowboy, here’s your chance to ride along with me as your side-kick and saddle pard.
