I built this little paradise in a really very beautiful, tourist destination not only because of its important Jesuits ruins, but also for the breathtaking virgin nature in this green northern Argentina province. San Ignacio is a rather small village and we are very patient, calm and friendly persons so surely staying with us should be very relaxing for you. We warmly welcome volunteers (also with their child) basically to have fresh air from outside these backwoods – in addition I love good lively company and also need some little help in our hotel/bungalows Pragamisiones. Since this occupation is a mainly Female matter – I look for just one skilled Lady (better if not vegetarian) and of course it’s up to you when you arrive or how long you decide to stay here, take it as a kind of working vacation-ecotourism. Arkansas

Volunteers will need their own RV and will have to greet visitors, provide information and assistance to visitors about the area, self deposit guidelines and self deposit vaults, surveillance of facilities and equipment, and notification of the proper authorities in case of emergency. Some light maintenance will be required, such as cleaning restrooms, picking up litter, cleaning grills and fire rings, and cleaning camping sites. Australia

HOUSE/PET-SITTER needed in Wondecla, from 12/19/2011 until 1/7/2012. We have two dogs, and they are house dogs, but we have a big yard and they love to be outside as well. They have a walk in the afternoon, not strictly structured i.e. we walk around the back paddock so they can explore. We prefer them to sleep inside at night, no problem as they are house trained. Not really fussy eaters, and, love a bone (good as bribery when we go out). We have small acreage backing onto a permanent creek. The house is three bedrooms, with a verandah overlooking the property. We don’t have a pool, but there is a water hole for swimming in the Wild River Park at Herberton. We are centrally located near The Tablelands waterfalls, an easy drive from Lake Tinaroo, and about 80 klms from Innisfail down the Kennedy Highway. HOUSE SWAP WANTED. We would like to exchange our Australian home for one in England for a few months. Swap your home or canal boat in southern England for our bungalow in Bowen, Queensland Australia. We went to the UK about 15 years ago and didn’t get to anywhere near what we wanted. We want to travel all over the UK and Ireland and possibly France. We think about three months would suit us. We would also like to spend some time in a canal boat if possible. I am a retired marine engineer and my wife is a retired nurse so someone willing to swap a canal boat for three months for a house in Australia would be our first preference. Our house is what is known as a bungalow and is built of masonry brick and very comfortable. We have, of course, TV and internet access. Bowen is a small town (9,000 population) on the coast between Mackay and Townsville. We have a car for the use of a “home swapper” and two dogs. They live very close to us and are terribly spoilt. Bowen is close to the Whitsunday islands and although no services operate from here (I have no idea why not!) services are available from Airlie Beach which is a 40 minute drive from here. I have a 50 foot yacht which could be made available to the right person. The climate is tropical and the rainfall for the time of year we are looking at is very low as our rainy season doesn’t start until about Christmas. house sitter(S) NEEDED in southeastern Colorado for about six weeks from the last days of November 2011 until early January 2012. This is NOT a paid position. First time house sitters are OK. You just ought to love animals and be happy to spend time in their company. I am sorry, but I am NOT set up for your own animals nor young children. I need a couple or a single person (non-smokers) to care for my property and animals… horses, goats, dog, cats and an assortment of birds. There are easy chores here: feed and water and release animals in the morning (about 20 minutes) and then pen and feed in the evening (15 minutes). The longest “chore” will be walking the dogs twice a day – there is a mile track next to the house – we would like to think that this would be fun to do for yourself also. Accommodation will be the master bedroom, with attached bathroom. The house has a den, lounge, and kitchen with an attached dining room patio (recently added). Clean and tidy. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES available. We are a Spanish-speaking family who live in Villas Mastatal, located in a remote village outside of Puriscal. Our farm is 24 hectares and we produce organic crops. We have three horses, two dogs, and several cows. We make our own homemade cheese from cow’s milk and we are now focusing on building more organic crops. There are volunteer opportunities for construction projects, gardening, and working with medicinal plants here on our farm as well. Nearby activities can include tours of hot springs, river tours, and visiting. Volunteers will typically work Monday through Friday for at least five hours a day. Breakfast is served from 6:30 – 7:30am and lunch is served promptly at noon. We have individual rooms for volunteers, and private cabins as well, and an area for camping if you have your own tent. WE ARE SEEKING A VOLUNTEER to help at a small hotel in Orosi, near Cartago, where a room is provided with free internet and laundry, in return for handing out keys and cleaning rooms. The room provided has cooking facilities and a private bathroom with hot water. We’d like a long term volunteer who can spend at least a month in this role. Volunteering at the hotel would suit someone who works on the internet or from home or is retired. The seven room hotel requires less than two hours per day of cleaning but the main requirement is to be available to provide keys for the guests. The position would also be suitable for a couple or a family. To be able to speak Spanish would be an advantage, but it is not a requirement. The ad in The Caretaker Gazette was short and sweet: Winter caretaker needed in New Mexico for 200+ acres of quiet country living. Off-grid/remote living experience a must. No salary. At that moment, I was sitting at a desk in an office in the heart of mid-Atlantic sprawl, halfway through a summer writing internship at EARTH Magazine, and I couldn’t resist sending an email. Two days later, after a flurry of phone conversations with Judy, an artist who didn’t own a digital camera, but who assured me her place was something special, I found myself saying, “Yes, I’ll see you in October!” I had never been to New Mexico, but I had heard great things and the West was calling me back. Before moving east to earn a master’s degree in science writing from Johns Hopkins University, I had been living in Oregon, house sitting a remote off grid cabin in the Coast Range and I was eager to return to rural, rent-free life. I finished my masters and my internship (and turned down a staff-writing position), packed my car and my Border Collie mix Bowie and headed to New Mexico via Savannah, Georgia and New Orleans. Upon my arrival in Cerrillos, I was not disappointed. Judy’s place turned out to be a stunningly beautiful off-grid solar-powered Earthship surrounded by thousands of acres of wide-open land. It was love at first sight. Three years later, I still can’t believe my good fortune. More than a hundred people applied for the Earthship caretaking job, but Judy says she just had a good feeling about me, as I did about her, and we both consider ourselves lucky to have found one another. So far, I have spent two winters in the Earthship, from October to April, while Judy and her husband Tom relax poolside in Florida, near their kids and grandkids. This spring, after Tom and Judy returned from Florida, I decided I wanted to stay in New Mexico, so I spread the word through the local community that I was looking for a summer gig. Within a few days, I got one. I’m now caretaking another place in Cerrillos, exchanging gardening and dog sitting for rent-free living at the Garden of the Gods, a geologic wonder surrounded by towering fins of red, white and pink sandstone. As a former geology major, avid climber and lifelong rock hound, I’m in heaven. Caretaking is such a sweet gig, but it’s not for everybody. You have to be extremely flexible and mobile, I move every four to six months, on average, often all the way across the country, and have some way to make outside income, no matter where you are. The nomadic lifestyle suits me perfectly: Everything I own, including my two Border Collie mixes Bowie and Dio, fits in my car and I’ve fine-tuned the art of feeling at home no matter where I am in the world. Caretaking has also been an important secret of my success as a writer: I couldn’t make a living freelancing if I had to pay rent every month (conversely, I also couldn’t be a professional house sitter if I didn’t have the flexibility of freelancing from anywhere). Whenever I apply for a caretaking job, I send along a few clips of my work and I’ve found a lot of really wonderful people who are eager to support the arts by offering me their place to stay, rent-free. In the past six years, my caretaking side-career has also landed me on a horse ranch elsewhere in New Mexico, an empty mansion overlooking Montana’s Bitterroot Valley, a one-room dune shack on Cape Cod National Seashore and a 200-year-old Cape on the coast of Maine. We are looking for a responsible animal loving couple or individual to look after our home, property, and our family of five standard poodles, beginning in mid-December 2011, or possibly in mid-November 2011, and running for one year. We are located in a rural area, surrounded by water and mountains, and lots of hiking trails. The position involves the ongoing care of our dogs, the upkeep of the house, and some yard and small maintenance in exchange for a guest room and two available bathrooms, as well as around 3,000 square feet of house and paid utilities. The dogs are well trained, smart, (they should be doing the dishes!) and love human company. They range in age from one at 10 and a half, and the rest four and five years old. Their exercise routine involves running and playing together on the property and playing with humans, fetching etc. These dogs are definite characters and love to hang out around the house and property with you. They sleep in the house, on their bed or yours, only if you choose that! We do the grooming and keep them very short. Poodles don’t shed which is great. The property is around six acres, has a pond, is fenced, and is mowed once or twice a year by us, or another individual. A close friend who is a vet tech comes regularly to help with and one horse and one mini, and the house sitter would sometimes be asked to help turn out or feed the horses. There is a pool which is shut down in the winter, but come Spring does need some simple maintenance such as cleaning out leaves etc. There is a company who does any major work on the pool. The position is for one year, and we would be returning several times within that period, however there is a separate part of the house where we stay, and there is lots of privacy.
