Harry and Lawrene Denkers

In the decade since Harry and Lawrene Denkers were profiled in these pages (you can see their fist Caretaker Profile at http://www.caretaker.org/profiles.php?ID=profile4#profile), they have changed their style in regard to caretaking. It all had to do with the changes any family undergoes. If you read that first story, you’ll know the couple and their daughters, Rachel and Anna, then twelve and ten, left their Ontario, Canada, home in 1996 for three months to act as lighthouse keepers on the island of Seguin, off Popham, Maine. (They had learned of the position through a help-wanted ad in The Caretaker Gazette). But that sort of thing, three months away, becomes difficult when children hit summer job age (and school band/drama/team age). So the family thereafter set aside a week every May to drive the approximately thirty-hour round trip from home and help “open” the island, with the reward of staying in the lighthouse for that week while converting it from winter hibernation to visitor season readiness. Last year they received recognition from the Friends of Seguin Island for their decade of commitment. They otherwise did little when it came to caretaking beyond sprucing up their own rural property. But the kids got older still, as kids do. Rachel went to Europe for a year after high school to work as an au pair then was off to university in another Canadian province. Anna did a year in Mexico as an exchange student, finished high school, then was off, too, to university, also in another province. Harry and Lawrene in those almost-empty-nest (with their daughters and exchange students from other countries coming and going) then true empty-nest (when the tick, tick, tick of the clock can actually be heard) years, tried a bit of hiking. They loved it. So much in fact that they looked into the various trails’ advertised requirements for volunteer maintenance crews. That got them started on a whole new path, so to speak. First was the Appalachian Trail, specifically the Catskills section in New York. A week of camping and working with both trained trail captains and greenhorns like themselves had them hooked. Then they looked closer to home. The Bruce Trail that runs along Ontario Canada’s Niagara Escarpment is a public footpath built, maintained and promoted by volunteers. Harry and Lawrene became members and hiked a portion of the Peninsula section and loved that, too. They even managed to combine lighthouses and trail work when they joined the Flowerpot Island Light Station volunteer “Paint Week” work crew to effect some repairs and maintenance upon those historic buildings. Thereafter they applied to be part of the Bruce Trail’s “Flying Squad”, on call for trail work, as it arises and they are able, anytime during the year, on top of regularly scheduled spring and fall weekend trail building for which Harry is now a crew leader. Then they heard about Saba through another help-wanted ad in The Caretaker Gazette. Saba is a five-square-mile island in the Netherlands Antilles close to the touristier and better known St. Maarten. The volcanic geography rises from the sea, so no beaches, beaches being the main reason the majority of tourists visit the Caribbean. But with six vegetation zones ranging from desert at sea level through dry forest to rainforest to cloud (or “elfin”) forest at the three thousand-foot top (the highest point in the Netherlands Antilles), fantastic diving and carefully-tended and extensive historic trails, a hardier, more ecologically aware, more madding-crowd-shunning visitor is attracted to the place. Here’s the deal: they work from 7:30 a.m. to noon each day lugging tools, moving rocks, building steps, switchbacks and water bars, and hacking back fast-growing vegetation. Afternoons are their own to fill with snorkeling, diving, hiking (you’d be surprised at how many just shower off the morning’s dirt and hike yet another trail), walking about the sleepy towns or resting up in a hammock with a good book. Accommodations, some sightseeing, some snorkeling and some meals are provided by the Conservation Foundation and generous island businesses. Harry and Lawrene joined the February 2007 eight-member crew. And you’ve guessed it already: they loved it. Chain-gang style mornings of labor in exchange for accommodation? Perfect! They plan to return next year. In the meantime, still working their day jobs as self-employed carpenter (Harry) and editor (Lawrene), they are looking forward to an April trail building weekend on the Bruce, the June Flowerpot Island Paint Week, a visit to Seguin, and work on the Chatham-Kent portion of the Trans Canada Trail, that last very near their home.
