The Caretaker Gazette led me to exactly what I was looking for! Thanks so much, V.M. Kalamazoo,

Lastly, we will occasionally give you free use of a vehicle to explore the island. This is a “work for hire” position and does not imply employment. You must carry health and auto insurance for yourself. We are in one of the most beautiful parts of Hawaii, and I believe in the world. We are seeking a self-motivated, organized, in shape and strong, and very tidy and clean individual, who will work 32+ hours a week to upkeep our estate’s land, agriculture, and gardens. We are willing to train in our procedures, but you must have experience. There are occasions where we have to do a little sanding and painting, and pressure washing. We live in a jungle, where it is absolutely necessary to spray herbicides and insecticides. We do our best to be as organic as possible. You must be proficient and competent in using a commercial mower, weed eater, blower, hedge trimmer, chain saw, pole chain saw, and silky pole saw. We use mostly Stihl equipment, and have an echo weed eater, and a commercial mower by Honda. This equipment will be your responsibility to maintain, and you should be able to do light repairs on them. You will have to tend to all fertilizing and weed maintenance. You must be competent in installing, maintaining, and repairing irrigation. We use Toro products. We have over 60 different fruit and spice trees, and edible berries and bushes, vegetable and herb gardens, and a ¾ acre botanical garden with rare palms, Heliconia, and Gingers. We are in the process of adding three lotus and lily ponds. It is fabulous, but it is hard work to maintain all of them. If you love plants and the outdoors, this is your dream job. Do not fool yourself, it is hard work, but well worth it. The property has a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. It is a spectacular place. If you feel this position might be your calling, please send me your resume and a list of references. I will review them and give you a call to set up an interview time. I can do FaceTime, Skype, WhatsApp, or Zoom. Please have one of these options available for your interviews. No drug use or smoking of any kind, and we expect responsible alcohol use! We do not accept applicants with children or pets. All applicants will be subject to background checks. You may contact me, [Contact info available to subscribers] for questions. Please forward resumes and references to [Contact info available to subscribers] and include the terms “House of Kona, caretakers” in the subject line of your email. My response should be received within 48 hours. Aloha and mahalo!
Iceland
VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED from August 22 to August 31. [Contact info available to subscribers] volunteers will have the opportunity to work on the historical island of Vioey for the 17th year in a row with our host, the city of Reykjavik. Vioey or “Wood Island” is a popular destination during the summer among Icelandic and foreign visitors. The island is covered by many species of plants and at least 30 species of breeding birds have been counted here. Vioey was inhabited soon after the settlement of Iceland in the 10th century. In the beginning of the 20th century, around 100 people lived there. Today the island is uninhabited. There is a regular ferry connection between the island and the harbor of Reykjavík. The island is only a few hundred meters away from the city and the trip takes a few minutes. This makes Vioey so special; it is a peaceful place, very close to the busy city life of the capital. There are hiking and cycling paths around the island and there is no motor traffic allowed. It also features intriguing sculptural artwork, amongst them all nine pairs of basalt pillars that comprise Richard Serra’s work Afangar and Yoko Ono’s “Imagine Peace” column, a tower of light, which is supported by the widow of John Lennon. Other places of interest on Vioey are related to archaeological research. Volunteers will help prepare the island for the autumn/winter season. Volunteers will beautify the surroundings by cleaning up the area, especially along the coastline, for instance by hand-picking garbage or collecting trash blown by the wind or brought by the sea to the shores and surroundings. [Contact info available to subscribers] volunteers may carry out some gardening activities as well and possibly make and maintain walking paths. Well maintained paths enable people to visit the area without damaging it and this important work also helps to improve safety for visitors. Depending on the advance of the project and weather conditions, volunteers may have other possible tasks such as checking up and repairing garden furniture. The working day normally runs from 09:00 – 17:00 with breaks for lunch and coffee; however, please be prepared for some flexibility due to the nature of Iceland’s changeable weather, as we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or activities planned. The temperature in late August can drop during the evenings. Volunteers should have motivation to work outside and work in all kinds of weather, as it can get cold and rainy. The working plan is flexible, and it will depend on the needs of our host. No previous experience is necessary. Since most of the work will take place outdoors, it is recommended to bring warm and/or waterproof clothes (overcoats, scarves, gloves, and hats) walking shoes/boots. [Contact info available to subscribers] volunteers will be lodged in a local house on Vioey Island, in shared rooms. The facilities are equipped with a kitchen, shower, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Please bring your own sleeping bag. Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note the food [Contact info available to subscribers] provides will be vegetarian. Do not forget to bring some traditional/typical food, drinks, recipes, music, games, or movies from your country for the intercultural evening. Please be aware some items or ingredients may be expensive in Iceland, and you will need to buy them yourselves or bring them from your country. For more information, please visit [Contact info available to subscribers].

Property Caretaker Profile
Reinventing Myself. A Profile of James Smith Address: [Contact info available to subscribers] Interests: Swimming, scuba diving, water skiing, boating, camping, and raising German Shepherds. Quote: “Reinventing Myself” by James Smith
James Smith standing in front of the farm house
My story begins with me being born and raised in Albany, New York. A city I spent 40 years enjoying with a Christian upbringing along with four sisters. I started mowing lawns at the age of 15 and using snow blowers in the winter by the time I graduated high school. I had saved enough to go to a two-year college for horticulture. This was the start of a long career in landscaping. Over the years, I owned and ran businesses in pest control, wildlife control, and handyman services. Some of my interests include swimming, boating, waterskiing, camping, and raising German Shepherds. Back in 2000, I became interested in The Caretaker Gazette. I’ve been a subscriber ever since. I’ve worked for two other estates, both in the State of New York prior to working for my new posting in the State of Illinois for the Goeken family on a 78-acre farm estate. I just want to say that if you dream of an adventure, and you can put your accomplishments to paper along with a decent resume, then anyone can do what I did. It’s not that hard! Just believe in yourself and don’t let other negative people sway you. Go after your dreams and don’t be a quitter. I now have the opportunities to use all my six service backgrounds in one place. I can’t begin to say how happy I am after over 30 years of searching to live on a country farm along with friendly open people. I live now in a Midwestern community that welcomes people who can offer peace and love and a good work ethic. We still help friends and neighbors. We don’t need their money, but we do need their friendships. Life is bigger and better and more satisfying. Bring your talents and bring your Christian goodness. Life can be sweeter when you help others. It uplifts you and makes you feel great. Just make your plan and work your plan. Don’t let the number of applications sway you to achieve your place. You have to work at getting the place or adventure. Keep writing and sending your resumes in to opportunities that you read in the Gazette. Don’t be a quitter if you want to win your place. I struggled for 30 years. I found my personal niche but hadn’t found the place to come home to, but after my struggle, I’ve found a home to love and be proud to become a part of. If you want to inspire yourself, you need to empower yourself. Give yourself the power to create and reinvent yourself!!! The Caretaker Gazette allows me to move forward from one adventure to another. Meeting people, places and forging a lifetime of joyous memories. One day last year, I was going through my email messages and read this ad in one of my Gazette email updates, and even though the ad’s headline started out with “Couple needed”, I emailed the advertiser and applied for their position:

An aerial view of Maple Lane Farm
James Smith with his friend Gonzo
And interestingly landing here at Maple Lane Farm, I found out they have used The Caretaker Gazette exclusively for 25 years for all the help that has worked at the farm. At one time this farm estate had 46 head of horses, so they had to have a large staff back then. They ran an Animal Ministry with exotic animals for a number of years and now are getting more into Event Planning, Concerts and Weddings so the type of people have changed over time. The women are kind, loving, respectful people who look to attract like-minded people who want the quality of life with no drama. They let me do what I know needs to be done to keep the place looking great. They have a computer program for System Management that gives me all the info I need to find vendors and suppliers, which helps me be independent yet access all the information needed. The story of this magnificent place is quite a remarkable one. The owner actually boarded two little ponies when she was a young girl here at the farm. Many years later she showed her first horse at an open horse show here. She dreamed of nothing but growing up and getting a job one day cleaning stalls at this beautiful piece of heaven. Then after decades of hard work and global travel she was looking at farms for sale to consolidate her own herd of boarded horses into her own facility when she became lost. The owner found herself on the Maple Lane Farm facility but never recognized it as the same place that she always dreamed of. It looked different to her as barns had been removed and many changes were made to the property. She fell in love with it again and went to the front door and asked the then current owner if he would ever consider selling it. He had her removed from the property as it was not going to ever be for sale. It never did come on the market. She relentlessly pursued the place, coming by most weekends and making a general pest of herself until after several years the then owner called her saying he would sell her the farm. Thank your creator for being a human being rather than a bug or some animal. I know I do. The panorama here on the farm estate of the grounds, the trees, barns, fields, and pastures are compelling to a city boy with always a country heart. I now help manage the estate along with a single mom and her three incredibly smart, engaging daughters. These young women are the successors to our generation. They are the ones to succeed us. Ashley and Christen for their ability to uplift the homeless and share their musical talents. Their sister, Lauren, for her love and care for the farm animals, the horses, donkeys, pigs, and doggies. The owner bred Arabian Horses at the time and had one in particular that Wayne Newton, the singer, entertainer, and Arabian horse breeder, had given her. She loved that horse more than life and wanted him to have his own pasture and never have to fight with other horses for his food. This horse went on to become the most winning Arabian in history and their love affair quite a beautiful story in itself. That’s why she wanted this farm so badly, for that horse. He passed away at the age of 36 years but has a Museum of all of his trophies in his honor. She had this horse cremated and is lovingly attending to a beautiful wooden case of his ashes so that she can still be with him. They are very sentimental people and take care of old animals that most would not. Their Animal Ministry hosts 250 children with special needs each year for fishing in their two acre pond. They host Boy Scouts, Vacation Bible Camps, Father-Son Camp Outs, Church Services, Family Day Picnics for Public Safety Personnel, Homeless Shelter Events, Unwed Mothers functions for their babies and have done weddings and funerals for those in need as the owner is a Minister with a huge heart to help others. The animals were each dumped and unwanted by others or abused. She knit together performances to the delight of thousands of children who delighted in being entertained by trained zebras, camels, llamas, zebus and countless other animals that no one else saw the value in. Most have died off by now but everyone I have met tells me stories of the countless events hosted out of love and compassion by these people. The farm is about a third in lawn to mow, a third in wooded trails and the rest in pasture space. My days start early. I first feed and water the horses and livestock then clean out a few stalls. Then I may cut fallen trees for firewood or clear trails. If it’s cold outside I can work inside the barns organizing things, building shelves or go to the main house and help out there. I don’t get much supervision as I am trusted to do what needs to be done and use my own judgement to complete it. They won the Farm of The Year Award last year and have the oldest Cottonwood Tree in Illinois on the property. Some have said this tree must be 120 to 150 years old as twelve people holding hands cannot reach around its massive base. With my love of growing things, I will build the type of respect around it and get it registered on Historic Land Sites when the weather gets a little warmer. This amazing farm is 150 years old and the current owners have had it for 25 years and the daughters hope to keep it always in the family. Parts have been sold off over the last few years but it is still magnificent and everything they advertised in The Caretaker Gazette was true. It is a piece of Heaven on Earth and I am beyond thrilled to have found my way into their hearts, lives and this beautiful farm.

To be considered, applicant(s) must have individual initiative, a sense of responsibility, have good decision-making skills, be clean, meticulous, and organized. Pets and horses are welcome. There is an old settler cabin on the property. It is partially restored. If you are interested in working on it (and ‘eventually’ moving in), we will add a modest monthly stipend. At the current time, there is a large, older RV hooked up on the property. It is in good condition. If you do not currently have an RV, this one may be available for your lodging. In exchange for your services, we supply an RV pad, electricity, water, and septic hookup (on a hill, overlooking the river). An older side by side UTV is available for your use, with some storage for personal belongings. There is a large SUV on site for emergencies. Cell service is spotty. The main house has a landline and Wi-Fi available to you. A land line is available at the RV site also. There is FedEx and UPS delivery and USPS post office boxes five miles away. The caretakers must enjoy solitude and (lots of) wildlife, since the nearest town (with a clinic and grocery) is 45 minutes away, the nearest neighbor is three miles away, and the nearest hospital and Walmart are over 70 miles away. The road ends at our gate. Please respond with a detailed letter/resume, and your picture to [Contact info available to subscribers] I will respond with more detailed information. WANT TO HELP BUILD A COMMUNITY? Love the sea? After finishing the building of our boat and our first sea-trial trip, we are presently based on an organic apple farm 40 minutes south of Oslo, where we are focusing on beekeeping as we intend to build up on honey production and queen-breeding this summer. We are a community-based project born over 10 years ago. Involving people from all over the globe, we hope to eventually form a community present both on land and at sea, which will cooperate with eco-villages, sharing the bliss of sustainable living and traveling through organic farming and sailing – connecting places and people across the oceans. If you have any knowledge or interest in permaculture, self-sufficiency, alternative living, etc., don’t hesitate to contact us and share your ideas. Our hopes are for the farm to flourish into a place where food, thoughts, plans, adventures, and – of course – boats, can grow! Please send an email to [Contact info available to subscribers] explaining why you would be interested in our community and include “Sea Gypsy Application” in the Subject Line: so we know you have been reading this. Love from Sailing the Farm, a sea gypsy tribe of tomorrow!
Ohio
CARETAKER NEEDED in the Canton/Hartville area. Looking for a person or a couple. This is not a traditional ranch job and is not a riding position. We currently have three horses in residence but can be as low as two and up to six. This is a 30 acre horse facility with indoor and outdoor arena, pasture space, and obstacle course. Although there are a large number of horses on the property you are only responsible for owners horses (two to six). The current business on the property is responsible for all arena maintenance, their horses, large barn upkeep, the fencing of the area they are renting, client services, etc. So, you get the experience of a large facility without all the upkeep. We are offering a fully furnished, 980 sq. ft., newly built bunk house attached to the barn and shop area so your daily commute is easy, a ranch truck for running ranch errands is available and gas for ranch truck is covered, space for a horse or two, internet, cable with all the channels, electric, water, washer and dryer for use in the tack room, negotiable salary dependent upon experience and skill set and performance as well as how many horses you bring with you. We also offer starting paid days off away from the farm at 10 weekdays and four weekend paid days off per year with notice, unless you have your own horses that will be on the property when you plan to be away. We welcome a well behaved dog or two but expect them to have manners around horses and to be kept in the yard or on a leash at all times when clients are on the property. If you let your dogs roam please be aware that you will be responsible for picking up all dog waste in, around and near public areas. We are really pretty laid back and aren’t sticklers on when the work gets done, as long as it gets done within a reasonable timeframe. If you have no horses of your own or in your care on the property, we are pretty reasonable with days/nights away from the property, we just require proper notice (as long as it is when we are in town – we travel extensively). We ask for no drama, no drugs. No drinking when working with horses or using farm equipment. Sorry – no children (our living space can accommodate two adults only), no slackers. If you have a good work ethic, are self-motivated, can prioritize and self-schedule then it’s not terribly hard work. If you see it needs to be done – Do it. This is a private contractor position, not an employee position. Basic duties include feeding the horses, bathing horses as needed, basic daily hoof care, daily mucking stalls and dry lots. There will be days that are semi full days but more often than not work is as needed and some days are just feeding and mucking. Please email your resume and references to [Contact info available to subscribers]

We are a family of six who have been ranching in Texas on a small scale for the past 10 years, and we are ready for a change. As a family, we have experience in raising and/or breeding: dairy and beef cattle, show cattle, poultry, goats, pigs, livestock guardian dogs, and horses. We currently raise registered Texas Longhorns, and we often use many of our longhorns for charity events. Mark: After working in law enforcement for 15 years, I retired to start my own trucking business. However, my passion lies in ranching and equipment. I am proficient in stick welding and metal work, and I have my own welding trailer. I am experienced in vehicle maintenance and repair. I can operate heavy machinery including tractors, skid steers, and dozers. I also hold a Class A CDL with all endorsements (plus hazmat). I enjoy turning wrenches, working with my hands, and learning new skills. I do not believe in idle hands. I am looking for a position that takes care of equipment and maintains the property. I do enjoy working with cattle and other livestock. Becca: Just before I had our first child, I was in the customer service industry and coached high school athletics. I would take an interest in housekeeping, cooking/cleaning (guest ranch situation), and/or a separate position with animal care and management. A little about our kids: We have four kids aged 9-15 years old. They are all Longhorn showmen, and care for all of their own livestock. They are extremely helpful and can provide an extra hand for those small tedious tasks. As for our current home, we will not be selling if we need to relocate. Recently our kids have had the itch to rodeo, so we have been on the hunt for horses. If the position allows for personal horses, we would hold off on finding rodeo horses as we understand relocating performance horses in a permanent situation is not ideal when you consider weather and elevation. Neither our steers nor the horses are a must, just ideal. If relocated, we are looking for housing on the ranch. Willing to relocate to a red state. We both have resumes and references if needed. We believe in God, family, and country. If you hire us, you get 12 able hands for the price of 1-2. We like to do things as a family, this includes work. Please reach out to us by phone at [Contact info available to subscribers].

Hey all! We, (Meg 34, Tim 40, our baby boy Cedar 1, and one black lab) are looking to relocate to Asheville, North Carolina this spring/summer. We’re finding it difficult to commute back and forth from Tennessee as we look for land to buy, to homestead on, so we are hoping that placing an ad here might help us find a temporary place for a few months as we buy something and get transitioned. We’re looking for a place in the three to nine month range and that is of course very flexible. We would absolutely love to take care of your property as you are away. We are clean and respectable and very capable, definitely self-starter types. Here are some of the services we can offer: professional photography, landscaping, pet/ animal care (domestic or farm) cleaning, Airbnb flipping, building, grounds maintenance, (Tim owns a repair and maintenance service and has building and mechanic skills as well). If you have anything or know of anyone who does, please email us at [Contact info available to subscribers] Thank you. Be well.
