Belize

CARETAKER NEEDED to live/caretake on our five acre piece of land, located on the beautiful Mopan River in the foothills of the Maya Mountains in the district of Cayo, close to the Guatemalan border, four miles from San Ignacio and in the village of Bullet Tree Falls. It is a great location to access Tikal, Caracol, Mountain Pine Ridge, El Pilar and other local Mayan ruins and sites. Just a few hours to the coast to beaches and access to diving/snorkeling on the world’s second largest reef with up to 300 islands and atolls. The land has been planted up with fruit trees, coconuts, and a mix of hardwoods and ornamentals. There is over 1,000 feet of river frontage and a riverside deck and stairs down to the river for swimming or tubing or boating etc. A rope swing also. There are two sleeping cabins and a 22′ diameter thatch building with kitchen, dining, and living area. It is off the grid with no electricity, phone or town water. But we are set up with butane gas and stove for cooking, a composting toilet; cistern water system and water pump for filling tanks with river water for washing and watering. There is a waterline and tap to the kitchen and a shower. We have a local villager who does basic maintenance of the land but we need someone to live there and love it. It would cost $250USD to cover his fees. There would be the option of renting out one of the cabins to cover the fee. Any other improvements to make your stay more comfortable (solar panels for music and lights, kayak, canoe, kitchen accessories, mosquito net, etc.) would be up to you. Come and experience a wonderfully different life in a small village in Bulgaria. I have the pleasure of taking care of a lovely piece of land which I am slowly turning into a beautiful garden. Canada

WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEKING a reliable, trust-worthy, hardworking individual or couple to look after two luxury ocean front properties in Sidney, BC on a permanent and long-term basis. WE ARE ON THE LOOKOUT for a semi-retired man (or couple) who would enjoy helping out on the ranch as a longer term commitment. Details negotiable! Another position is open for a longer term stay (to the end of August) for a physically able lady with horse and people skills. Must be flexible, friendly and open minded! Pocket wages possible for long-term stays. We (father, mother, daughter, son in law and their two sons) are a family run ranch in a remote area of British Columbia. We run a 500 head commercial cow/calf operation and have about 50 head of horses (give or take a few). We operate a trail riding outfit in the nearby mountains during July and August. We start calving at the end of February; do a pile of range riding in May and June, head to the mountains in July and start haying by the beginning of August. Our horses are gently started and then learn as they go on the ranch and in the mountains. They are almost all out during the winter as we really don’t start riding until the end of April or so. We have always had luck with those people with previous agriculture experience, but it isn’t really necessary, just a conscientious attitude and a great work ethic gets anyone by. Most importantly, you must be easy going and adaptable, as every day can bring a new challenge. If you need ‘routine’ in your life, our ranch may not be the place for you. What you will be helping with will change with the days and the seasons. There are no set rules or hours, you’ll just hang out and work with us, side by each, for all aspects of ranch life. That will include both outside and inside work, from helping prepare dinner and sweeping a floor to outside chores, from range riding and checking cows, it all depends on the season, your abilities and what is happening at that time. Guatemala

LOOKING FOR A DOG/house sitter in Jaibalito, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala from mid-April through early July 2012 (the rainy season here). You should pack mud boots, though when the rainy season is agreeable, it’s lovely. We have warm, sunny days with afternoon rain and into the night. At its worst, it can be awful and intense. You pay $20 for electric and $15 for gas, as well as walk my dog, Zita a minimum of two times a day for 20 minutes. More/longer are welcome! You have to dote on her, bathe her, and spend nights at home. Because of boat only access, this means you’re in the pueblo after 5:30pm. The property does better with some care. A gardener comes 10 hours a week and he knows how to keep busy on his own. However, with the dry season, an hour of watering a day is needed (mostly with sprinkler but some hand watering). I’ve had 8-year-olds and their Moms, 65-year-old retired men, a couple in their late 30’s, and others stay here. Life here is somewhat physical with the boat passage, walking, etc. It’s not for everyone. The most important criteria is a dog lover who has respect for the house and awareness of the responsibility that comes with that charge. There is no Internet or television in the house. Posada Jaibalito has Internet and Wi-Fi and is only a three minute walk away. Internet (for those who need high capacity) is best from Panajachel, a 30 minute boat ride away. The house is a two bedroom/one bath, with kitchen, hot water shower, and is approximately 1,000 sq. ft. The property is fenced. Zita has the run of the yard and house. It is a five minute walk from the public boat dock. Basic groceries can be bought in Jaibalito. More specialized items must be bought in Pana, a 30 minute boat ride away. Tom and Linda

Tom, a native Californian, recalls, “I met Linda, a Boston girl, in Estes Park, Colorado in the summer of 1975. We married in 1977 and began our journey down the road less traveled.” The Tessmans subscribed to The Caretaker Gazette while wintering in Clearwater Beach, Florida, in their RV. They answered an ad in the Gazette for a caretaking position at a chateau in France. The couple applied for the position and waited. Tom explains, “Then in April, as we trekked back to New England (our home base) we thought it prudent, and suggested to the lady hiring that we have an in person interview.” The Tessmans called the owner and she agreed to interview them in person. Tom continues, “This meeting in South Carolina took us 200 miles out of our way and proved to be a worthwhile endeavor. A month later she emailed us with the offer to caretake her chateau. We were elated.” Tom and Linda arrived at the French chateau to begin their year-long caretaking position. The “Chateau de Parthey” is located in Jura, in eastern France, near the quaint town of Dole, 100 kilometers from Switzerland, in the foothills of the Alps. The Tessmans are paid 200 Euros a month and have the use of a 1988 Volvo. According to Tom, “Our quarters in the chateau include two huge bedrooms and a private bathroom. The chateau has 27 rooms and is 35,000 square feet. Easily the biggest place we have ever lived in. The chateau sits on 40 acres of parkland, very wooded and with several fields of sunflowers, corn and hay.” Tom says, “Linda’s duties include keeping the 27 room chateau neat and tidy, while caring for the 98-year-old Madame each weekend. Madame has 24/7 care Monday through Friday, and is a very sweet lady with a lifetime full of great memories. Her family has lived in this chateau since the 1800’s.” Tom describes his responsibilities as, “Security for this estate. My daily duties including feeding the chickens, (they provide country fresh eggs) and care of Darween, a silky terrier. Darween needs several walks a day and is bathed weekly. Darween belongs to Madame, and she is quite fond of him. The security is not problematic, as we are quite in the country.” However, the chateau sits within a short walk from a walking and biking path near the river Doubs. Occasionally, well-meaning tourists or locals wander onto the property. Madame insists on her privacy, so Tom obliges. He also oversees maintenance on the grounds, including hauling and stacking wood to feed the woodstove during cold weather. Tom continues, “All in all, we are free during the week. We often take drives along quiet country roads, and eventually end up on the ‘rue de vin’ (road of wine). Having been in the ‘wine’ (food and beverage) business for so many years, we feel we are qualified to judge the many wines the region has to offer. Arbois, Chateau Chalon and Ormans are amongst our favorites.” Tom says, “We spend a lot of time wandering the narrow cobbled streets of Dole, many of which lead to the imposing cathedral of Notre Dame. The cathedral can be seen for miles, and at night lights up like Disneyland. Dole also sits on a canal that is used for houseboats (the Rhone to Rhine). When we get to the market, we both shop elbow deep with the locals, sampling and buying fresh products. Linda then comes home and is trying to become the next Julia Child.” Tom explains, “We really only venture out a couple times a week. Hanging around and exploring the chateau is awe inspiring enough. Often with wine in hand, we go room to room and ponder the history of this place. A couple of times we’ve stumbled onto a room we hadn’t noticed or stairs that are concealed and lead down or up depending on the ‘salon’ (room) you’re in at the time.” Tom continues, “The attic is on the 4th floor and is filled with things from another time, and is quite entertaining. The 14th century tower continues up from there. After two more stairways and a final ladder you reach the top and a window from which to gaze.” “This part of France is quite agricultural and farming is a mainstay of the area. The chateau is surrounded by fields of sunflowers. Linda picks them daily and fills the chateau with huge vases which are towering and colorful. Immediately she noticed not only sunflowers but vast fields of wildflowers. She then decided to create some dried flowers and hung thousands of these (free gifts) in the attic and in the winter the chateau is filled with color from the summer.” Tom advises, “When in France, do as the French do. The tiny town of Domparis is three kilometers west of the chateau, and we either walk or drive to the boulangerie (bakery) daily. Recently I got the notion that I should also try a pastry a day routine. Seems to be working. Don’t know if I’m gaining weight because the scale is in kilos and ‘only’ reads 80. It is helpful that our suite is on the third floor, and 45 marbled steps up create caloric burn.” The Tessman’s 35 years on “the road less traveled” has taken them to another chapter of their life. They feel blessed and very grateful to be in what Tom affectionately calls “the Honky Chateau.”

SEEDS volunteers will take part in environmental projects in the Icelandic Western fjords – one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places in Iceland, with its high mountains of extreme beauty and dramatic fjords cutting deep into the landscape. The area has a mythological aura and the landscape draws people into the world of elves, trolls and other supernatural creatures. We are working with our local hosts in diverse projects including cleaning the coastline and collecting driftwood.
