The Caretaker Gazette really got me started as a house sitter-caretaker and my last two assignments were found through this membership. Yes Dennis, we are doing more email broadcasts than ever. Many of these email broadcast ads never get published in any issue because the property owners need to make a quick hire. That’s why we advise all subscribers to provide us with an email address to use for them. We have many subscribers who don’t use computers themselves, but they give us a friend or family member’s email address so that they can receive our email broadcast ads every week.

Jeff and Karen Hay have been successful caretakers for many years. Their last Caretaker Gazette Profile proved just how successful they’ve been – they received many inquiries from other Caretaker Gazette readers wondering “How do you do it?”

Among an assortment of great caretaking locations, they had two particular standouts. One for several years as caretakers of a 26 acre private island estate in Kaneohe Bay, Oahu. Known as “Coconut Island” this estate was the same property as the opening shots of the “island” from the popular TV series “Gilligan’s Island”. Jeff and Karen were responsible for the oversight of several employees and managed and maintained several dwellings, two boats, vehicles, equipment and the extensive grounds. The absentee owner lived in Japan and had many friends and business associates visit the island. Jeff and Karen hosted the guests as well as other special events. The island estate was such an idyllic setting that many groups and individuals requested use of the facilities. It was very important to the owner to maintain good relations with not only the community but with the University of Hawaii as well who had their Marine Biology Center housed there. Jeff and Karen were the owner’s liaison with these various groups and individuals. Jeff says, “We received a generous salary, including benefits, a two bedroom two bath home on the island and the use of the boats and vehicles. When the University of Hawaii decided to buy the island, we left Hawaii to travel with our two children. Caretaking had allowed us to home school them and we explored Mexico, Costa Rica and most of the southwestern United States as caretakers.” Caretaking was an option Jeff and Karen were still considering when they found and subscribed to The Caretaker Gazette. For five years, they managed a ten acre organic orchard in the north part of the South Island of New Zealand. They learned a lot about organic growing and sustainable agriculture there. The property had plums, avocadoes, figs, pears, apples, fejoes, citrus and much more. Its acreage overlooked Golden Bay. Karen kept the accounts and they both marketed the produce to small organic shops. Jeff and Karen met 20 years ago in southern California. Jeff flew over from Hawaii for a friend’s wedding, met Karen and decided to move to California. Karen had a managerial job in marketing and advertising with a large savings and loan company and Jeff was offered a lucrative sales management position. But when they decided to start a family they started questioning their lifestyle. They wanted more time together with a slower pace of life and decided to climb off the corporate ladder. Jeff and Karen say, “Caretaking has provided us with something we can do together and a pace that gives us the time to pursue our other interests. We’ve also been fortunate enough to caretake two beautiful properties in different hemispheres.” In their previous 2003 profile Jeff and Karen stressed the imperative of a trusting relationship between the caretakers and property owners. Since that profile – which really turned into a caretaking forum, they’ve given a lot of thought to exactly what does make them successful. While they are still quick to qualify all their advice with the essential trust between partners (caretakers and property owners) inquiries have led to a sharper definition. Jeff and Karen now say that the “right fit” in caretaking is of real importance and to obtain that “fit” the caretakers must know who they are and what they want. Karen says at first it can be as simple as a desire to live a more romantic life in exotic locales. However to get “the perfect fit” can take a more exacting definition and while that definition would seem to go without saying they say it’s not wise to leave it unspoken. Jeff and Karen see caretaking as an alternative to the go-to-school, get-a-degree, get-a-career, work-for-thirty-years, then retire concept that is a mainstream life choice. Beyond that Karen and Jeff say that they’ve very specifically defined the most important aspects of what they consider a meaningful life. Under a general heading of “Another World is Possible” they have inserted the specific desire to help create a more sustainable culture in which, for instance, organic agriculture (i.e. permaculture principles) figures largely. Jeff and Karen now see The Caretaker Gazette as more than an employment service rather as a potential meeting place for people to connect with property owners who share a compatible outlook.
