Alaska

The eagle preserve is located north of Haines, Alaska, along the Chilkat River and includes about 48,000 acres of prime eagle habitat. It is world-renowned for the large gathering of 3,000 or more eagles during the fall and early winter. A facility located at the “Council Grounds,” 19 miles north of Haines, along the Haines Highway, provides sheltered outside interpretive displays overlooking the Chilkat River where the highest concentration of eagles occurs. There is a two mile trail running along the river connecting scenic pullouts. The caretaker’s main tasks include providing the area staff with daily operations of visitor contacts, and eagle observations. Janitorial service on the vaulted latrine and facility maintenance, including light carpentry, painting, and repair work. May also include providing vehicle counts, highway safety information, nature observation, and commercial operator monitoring. Required skills are to be physically fit and willing to work in rugged terrain in cold and wet conditions; able to work independently with little or no direct supervision; able to live in rustic accommodations without running water have good public relation skills and be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Hi Gary, after returning from a much needed and long overdue vacation to the Virgin Islands, I realized that Boston was just too harsh of a climate to consider growing old in. I was working as a Pilates instructor, and while I loved it, I was never going to save enough to retire or get out of the renter’s market. My husband was getting up at 5am every day in all seasons to catch a bus and a train to work in a corporate kitchen so we could have health benefits. Compared to eight billion people in the world, we were lucky. We had plenty of friends, food, and warmth, but we were living in an expensive city just working to pay the rent, not enjoying life to the fullest. I knew there had to be something more for us out there where we could still work hard, but in a friendlier, less stress inducing atmosphere. A friend told me about The Caretaker Gazette, and I signed on and began my search. I had several ideas in mind, but the most important: the job needed to take us both, have a salary and benefits and a rent-free apartment. And it had to be somewhere warmer than Boston! I had worked high end housekeeping, food service and floral arranging aboard motor yachts and my husband is a culinary school trained chef. It took eight months for me to find the perfect job that ticked all the boxes for both me and my husband. We answered an advertisement in The Caretaker Gazette that was listed by an agency/headhunter. I kept it brief: a paragraph for each of us and pictures of my husband’s cooking and a few of us just having fun. The agency responded right away and asked for resumes. We had several phone and Skype interviews with the partners of the agency before we ever met or spoke with the owners of the property. After an initial Skype interview with our current employers, they flew us to California to meet face-to-face and to check out the town. Overjoyed is the best word to describe our feelings at the time. We had a few months before the position started, so we began to sell all of our furniture, say our farewells, and plan our adventure. We had to buy a car to get us across the country and away we went. We took three weeks exploring the southwest before we arrived on the West Coast. Our new caretaking position took us to Ojai, California, nestled in a valley about twenty-five minutes from one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. While the housekeeping and cooking came naturally enough, we were about to be introduced to pump rooms, irrigation systems, pool and spa maintenance, wine making, gardeners, contractors, light carpentry and plumbing and firefighting! (We always hire an electrician…wiring is not a hobby.) It has been an amazing experience for us both. Our rent-free cottage is nestled in a citrus grove-oranges, lemons, limes, Ojai Pixies – with fig, avocado and loquat trees in the mix. I was able to get beehives and chickens – both long-time dreams of mine. My husband is gardening with gusto and is currently taking back an acre of unused land for additional food growing. There was a defunct greenhouse on the property that I have turned into an orchid oasis. We are in paradise. We work a not-so-traditional forty-hour work week with two days off per week. We take full advantage of them by cruising up and down the California coast. San Diego, LA, Venice Beach, Santa Monica, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Palm Springs. The list goes on and on and we keep adding destinations to it, always finding time to explore a new beach and do a little snorkeling or napping. We love the location, the town, the town’s people, and our employers. We have been here for four and a half years now. And, while we plan on staying here until we retire, I still renew my subscription to The Caretaker Gazette every year. Not only do I want to support Gary and all the wonderful work he is doing, but I find the ads inspiring and I like to see the jobs available to retirees. CARETAKER(S) NEEDED to run a budget backpacker hostel in Swansea on Tasmania’s east coast. Swansea is a scenic coastal township, midway between two iconic landmarks, Freycinet National Park and Maria Island. The owner is intending to take some leave for a minimum of three months but preferably longer. Duties would include monitoring visitors for short and long-term stays, regular cleaning of the premises, carrying out room changeovers (including laundering linen) and some lawn mowing of a courtyard lawn and a small, attached camping area. WE NEED A CARETAKER for our cattle properties in the North Burnett area of Queensland. This could either be filled by one couple or alternatively split into two separate parts (two applicants, two separate locations). We are only a couple of hours from Bundaberg and are very flexible regarding days and hours, and we would tailor the position to fit suitable applicants. Firstly, we are looking for someone to live on our property situated just 12km from a small country town in a comfortable house with scenic surroundings. This person(s) would need to spend some time each week checking fences and waters (as well as fixing small problems with them when they arise), keeping an eye on the cattle, mowing and general upkeep around the house and sheds etc. If the applicant were to only wish to do this portion of the position, it could either suit semi-retirement and short travel, or someone wishing to seek employment in the nearby town. WE ARE A SMALL RURAL DESERT RANCH and organic farm with a natural hot water source located on a hillside in the Salton Sea area of the California desert. The Foundation operates at four locations in Ventura County, California. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work on the historical island of Vioey for the 17th year in a row with our host, the city of Reykjavík. Vioey or “Wood Island” is the largest island in the Kollafjorour Bay, just outside Reykjavík. The island is covered by many species of plants and at least 30 species of breeding birds have been counted here. Vioey was inhabited soon after the settlement of Iceland in the 10th century. In the beginning of the 20th century, around 100 people lived there. Today the island is uninhabited. Vioey is a popular destination during the summer among Icelandic and foreign visitors. Volunteers will help prepare the island for the summer season. Volunteers will beautify the surroundings by cleaning up the area, especially along the coastline, for instance by hand-picking garbage or collecting trash blown by the wind or brought by the sea to the shores and surroundings. Well maintained paths enable people to visit the area without damaging it and this important work also helps to improve safety for visitors. People ask us from time to time how we met. That’s easy. The answer is: we met online on an equestrian related dating site. We both had been in long-term marriages that had ended, our kids were grown and we felt “Hey, now’s the time that we should do what we want. Time’s a-wasting”! I, Renee, had been working in the corporate world. I was feeling suffocated by the urban area I was forced to live in and wondering how I could make things better for myself. Maybe try to get back to the life I had growing up on the Great Plains of Iowa. Marty just wanted a partner who was nice, a hard worker like him and loved horses and travel. It was a perfect match. Ten years in we’re still going strong. Our first job was the perfect setting and the perfect employers. “The Ranch” was remote and beautiful. It was a thousand acres of open space with wildlife and blue skies. Off in the near distance were the eastern slopes of the Mendocino National Forest. It was incredibly hot and windy in the summers but that was all right. We just got up early in the morning while it was still cool to take advantage of the cool hours and get our work done. In the afternoon we could head over to the reservoir and pretend it was our own private lake because no one else was there. Waking up each morning to physical chores taking care of animals, making repairs and doing maintenance did not seem like a job even though we took it very seriously. When work was done Renee used her spare time to start a successful blog and get writing assignments from national magazines. Marty got a Border Collie pup and started training him on sheep in preparation for cattle work. We really went in for the Homestead Existence, growing our own food, making our own food and taking care of our animals. The owners really appreciated getting homemade goat cheese and sourdough bread. It makes it sound like we didn’t have time for ranch work but that would not be true. When you work efficiently and use your time wisely there’s time for everything. We enjoyed it when the owners came to The Ranch on weekends, and everybody got together for big meals around the Cantina dining table. Sometimes we’d all go to the river bluffs and do shooting practice, swim in the river, or just talk around the outdoor fire pit and pizza oven with a glass of wine in hand. Our working relationship was perfect. Our employers would give us a task, we’d discuss how best to accomplish the task and then they let us just do it. Since Marty and I are perfectionists our employers were always more than pleased with the results. It was good to accomplish real life things where we could step back and admire the results. Marty has been on horseback since he was a kid in Bakersfield, California. He learned his skills at the knee of one of the Marlboro Men, Ben Bates, and a locally renowned breeder and trainer, RC Donaldson. From there he went on to cowboying near Eaglesville in Northern California and Newcastle, Wyoming. In Buttonwillow, California he worked cattle horseback in the feedlots. But life on ranches isn’t all horseback! As a matter of fact, very little of ranch life is horseback. So, along the way he learned how to drive tractors and excavators, dump trucks and backhoes, skip loaders and bulldozers as well as make electrical, plumbing and carpentry repairs. While employed at Riverside Horse Park in Bakersfield he fed 200 horses a day. Eventually he attended the Police Academy and worked as a police officer for 12 years. He had a stint as a Park Ranger and owned his own car repair business. He’s proficient at electrical and plumbing, irrigation and carpentry. He loves to travel and see new sights with his partner Renee, play the stock market for a little spending cash and watch old re-runs of Maverick and Rawhide. I, Renee, was born in Chicago but raised in Iowa: My family are multi-generation Midwestern farmers but my mom and dad broke the mold by becoming professional artists. I, myself, followed suit and earned a fine arts degree. I learned gardening from my dad and cooking from my mother. I write articles about country crafts, farmhouse recipes and domestic arts. In my personal blog I write about humorous observations of life on the ranch and farm and whatever strikes my fancy. I make my own soap, sew clothing, build wood crafts, candles and homemade cosmetics. In the last four years I’ve been a full-time real estate agent. Both Marty and I feel most at home in the country. We love being self-sufficient and doing for ourselves. Our previous employer Isabel Moore says this about us: “They are wonderful caretakers. I could rely on them 100% and we never worried about our animals and property while they were with us. We were terribly sorry to see them go. They’re self-starters and don’t need daily direction. You give them a task, consult about what the desired outcome is and then let them get to work. I can’t recommend them highly enough.” When we found our perfect caretaking job it wasn’t a slam dunk. Most of you caretakers will agree with us on this. It took a few months of looking at job descriptions and doing online research. When we first set out to be caretakers, we subscribed to a couple online caretaker sites. Of course, The Caretaker Gazette was one of those sites. It seemed to be the biggest and the best with the most variety. After a while we found some possibilities and so we went on a couple interviews but the jobs didn’t turn out. They weren’t what they advertised so we just hunkered down and expected, just like any job interview, that we would be looking at jobs that ultimately were not going to work out. Looking for a job is like baseball. You step up to the plate and the pitch is thrown. Will it be a hit, walk or out? Sometimes it’s a foul. You never know what the pitch will be, but you keep stepping up to the plate and eventually you will get a hit. We wanted a position where the people would respect us and value what we brought to the table which was considerable talent and experience. It was The Caretaker Gazette where we finally found our perfect job. I remember reading and thinking this sounds really good. We got an interview and drove to the Ranch while keeping our excitement under control because we had been down that road before only to be disappointed. This time as we drove through the gate, we started to let our excitement out a little bit. The location was outstanding. The look and the feel of the place was charming and human level. Still under control, however, we sat and talked with the owners well into the afternoon. The place may be great, but will you get along with the owners? It was a group of people who interviewed us. It was the owners and the couple who leased the land for grazing their cattle. We sat at the big table under the big trees in front of the ranch house. Then we walked the property and toured the house where we would eventually live. We even got in the old Mutt Jeep and drove around the property bouncing in and out of gullies and down to the big creek. We thought if nothing else we will have had a grand tour of a place that the general public never gets to see. They talked about the bears and wild pigs that lived in the property. We were really liking the first impression of the owners. They weren’t stuffy and uppity. They were down to earth and easy to talk to. When we sat down to talk the husband came in from dragging the arena and he was covered with dust. We loved that they weren’t averse to rolling up their sleeves and doing work themselves. It seemed like a perfect match. We drove away all excited now. Next, we waited, and it was a couple days when we got the call and they wanted us to start the process of coming on board. First, we had to pass a background check which we knew we could easily pass. It took a couple weeks but finally the word came, and we had the job! We were there for four years, and the time flew by quickly as it always does when you’re having a good time. Occasionally, the owners would come, and they’d have some project they wanted to consult with us on. We developed a family garden for the owners while we were there. We improved the irrigation ditch that went from the small creek to the large lake. We worked on the lake spillway to improve it. A lot of the work we did was on water issues. The well pumps and check valves we either fixed ourselves or got expert repairmen to work on them. We mended fences. We cleared brush. We built a giant chicken coop and run. We repaired windows and hired a chimney guy to put a custom spark arrestor on the chimney. We moved the cattle herd from pasture to pasture and kept an eye on them to make sure the babies and moms were healthy. If need be, we doctored the ones who got sick. We dealt with horses that colicked and made sure they were shod properly and wormed. We built pens for new animals and repaired the tin on the barn roof when a big windstorm came in and blew the tin off. This is only a small smattering of things we did. As any experienced caretaker knows the projects on a property for maintenance and repair are ongoing and constant.
