Letters to the Editor

Hi Gary, after returning from a much needed and long overdue vacation to the Virgin Islands, I realized that Boston was just too harsh of a climate to consider growing old in. I was working as a Pilates instructor, and while I loved it, I was never going to save enough to retire or get out of the renter’s market. My husband was getting up at 5am every day in all seasons to catch a bus and a train to work in a corporate kitchen so we could have health benefits. Compared to eight billion people in the world, we were lucky. We had plenty of friends, food and warmth, but we were living in an expensive city just working to pay the rent, not enjoying life to the fullest. I knew there had to be something more for us out there where we could still work hard, but in a friendlier, less stress inducing atmosphere. A friend told me about The Caretaker Gazette and I signed on and began my search. I had several ideas in mind, but the most important: the job needed to take us both, have a salary and benefits and a rent-free apartment. And it had to be somewhere warmer than Boston! I had worked high end housekeeping, food service and floral arranging aboard motor yachts and my husband is a culinary school trained chef. It took eight months for me to find the perfect job that ticked all the boxes for both me and my husband. We answered and advert in The Caretaker Gazette that was listed by an agency/head hunter. I kept it brief: a paragraph for each of us and pictures of my husband’s cooking and a few of us just having fun. The agency responded right away and asked for resumes. We had several phone and Skype interviews with the partners of the agency before we ever met or spoke with the owners of the property. After an initial Skype interview with our current employers, they flew us to California to meet face-to-face and to check out the town. Overjoyed is the best word to describe our feelings at the time. We had a few months before the position started, so we began to sell all of our furniture, say our farewells and plan our adventure. We had to buy a car to get us across the country and away we went. We took three weeks exploring the southwest before we arrived on the West Coast. Our new caretaking position took us to Ojai, California, nestled in a valley about twenty-five minutes from one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. While the housekeeping and cooking came naturally enough, we were about to be introduced to pump rooms, irrigation systems, pool and spa maintenance, wine making, gardeners, contractors, light carpentry and plumbing and firefighting! (We always hire an electrician…wiring is not a hobby.) It has been an amazing experience for us both. Our rent-free cottage is nestled in a citrus grove-oranges, lemons, limes, Ojai Pixies – with fig, avocado and loquat trees in the mix. I was able to get beehives and chickens – both long-time dreams of mine. My husband is gardening with gusto and is currently taking back an acre of unused land for additional food growing. There was a defunct greenhouse on the property that I have turned into an orchid oasis. We are in paradise. We work a not-so-traditional forty-hour work week with two days off per week. We take full advantage of them by cruising up and down the California coast. San Diego, LA, Venice Beach, Santa Monica, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Palm Springs. The list goes on and on and we keep adding destinations to it, always finding time to explore a new beach and do a little snorkeling or napping. We love the location, the town, the town’s people and our employers. We have been here for four and a half years now. And, while we plan on staying here until we retire, I still renew my subscription to The Caretaker Gazette every year. Not only do I want to support Gary and all the wonderful work he is doing, but I find the ads inspiring and I like to see the jobs available to retirees. Thanks so much, Gary, for this wonderful publication and good luck to anyone signing on! It takes time to find the right fit, but it is well worth the effort. Cheers, Monica and Fred, Ojai, California

LIVE-IN, PART-TIME RANCH CARETAKING JOB AVAILABLE at [Contact info available to subscribers]. Salary will be $550/month or more. I am in need of a ranch caretaker to live on my property and work part-time doing animal chores four to five days a week. I will guarantee enough work per month to at least cover rent. Ideally, the caretaker has their own RV or Trailer. I do have a 50 foot trailer to provide if needed. $550 rent if you supply your own housing, $700 to rent the existing trailer (one bedroom, full bathroom and kitchen, water heater, wood stove, propane fridge and 150 gallon propane tank). Wages paid are $17 an hour. The ranch is 300 acres off grid, located in Iowa Hill, California, about 45 minutes north of Auburn. The elevation is 2,500 feet which means it snows a couple times a year but rarely sticks for more than a couple of days. This property is at the top of a mountain with an air strip and amazing views of the surrounding areas. We have a 30-acre walnut orchard and many animals. There are 50 miniature goats, two horses, four alpacas, two pigs, one emu and chickens. The animal duties are one hour in the AM and 30 minutes in the PM. In spring and early summer, morning chores are only 30 minutes because we do not have to feed. We are starting a forestry grant project to thin out trees and mulch brush for 100 acres. There will be available work creating burn piles, limbing trees and running heavy equipment (if you have experience). We also have a couple farm stay rentals to service, if interested in additional work. This property is off grid, and 30 minutes from the closest store. You will need to have a generator or solar for power. I will supply water. There are fenced areas with beds available for a vegetable garden. Must be able to harvest and cut your own firewood. Must have a 4WD truck, and your own chainsaw. Garbage needs to be hauled to the Foresthill Transfer station. Must have experience living off grid. Many think they want and can do it but fail. This living situation is for someone who enjoys alone time and being far from the city. A little about me: I have another property in Newcastle with my husband and I am constantly back and forth. Depending on ranch projects, I may be up for five days at a time, or back and forth throughout the week. Winters are slow on the ranch, therefore; I’m away most of the week and come up for a couple of days. My husband owns an ornamental iron shop in town. He comes up to the ranch on weekends to help me with projects. We both are freedom loving Americans and hope to find a like-minded individual for this job. This project is based on similar activities around the world, where outstanding results have been achieved with volunteers. One of the two options below is also included in this project as a hands-on volunteering activity day: 1. A day trip combining a visit to the Hellisheioi geothermal power plant, a trash hunt in the area; and the Hot River Hike, a hike up a valley filled with hot springs where one can bathe. 2. A day trip to the Reykjanes peninsula, combined with a coastal cleanup in the area. All the activities are dependent on conditions such as weather and availability of our partners. This project combines learning, sharing, hands-on work and fun. No previous experience is needed. Volunteers should prepare to share environmental issues from their countries and be ready to spend time outdoors, walk medium distances during the cleanups, as during other activities and sightseeing. As a part of the project happens outdoors, volunteers should be ready to adapt and be flexible with the work and free-time schedule, as depending on the changeable weather, we may not be able to perform some of the activities (as) planned. [Contact info available to subscribers] participants will stay in a house in Reykjavík. The facilities are basic with a kitchen, showers, and a washing machine. Everyone is expected to show consideration for their companions. Participants will sleep in shared rooms/dorms of up to six people. Please bring your own sleeping bag and towel. Volunteers will receive food supplies and will be in charge of cooking and cleaning. Please note that the food [Contact info available to subscribers] provides will be vegetarian. Property Caretaker Profile

The Caretaker Gazette is SO MUCH MORE than a job, it’s a life-long relationship Address: [Contact info available to subscribers] Interests: tropical fruit farming, roller skating, soil and compost Quote: “There is nothing more spiritual than the physical” -Ester Hicks

Loren Steilen

It all started back when the world was supposed to end in 2012. Remember that, ha! I had dreams of sailing the world, making it back to my birthplace of Philadelphia by traveling west until I made it back to the East Coast. I was working in a restaurant in Southern California at the time, saving my money to take off for adventure! I saved $10,000 and discovered a woman who was sailing around the world, but she had a full crew. She did say I could meet her in Hawaii where she was taking her first stop before heading on to the Fijian Islands. I quit my job at the restaurant and continued my journey further west. By the time I arrived in Hawaii, her whole crew from the Oregon Coast scattered across the Hawaiian Islands. I was blessed with the newfound opening to be crew! Turns out, Oahu was not what I thought Hawaii was going to be, nor did I ever think I wanted to be in Hawaii. Then, I discovered the most amazing part of the world. I met people from Germany, Brazil, Argentina, and Belgium and they all said the same thing, “Hawaii is the most beautiful paradise on Earth.” I am fascinated by durian, the “king of fruits”: one of the most exotic fruits of the world, and it grew there. Everything grew there! Fruits most people do not even know exist because they are so sensitive and the fruit spoils if moved from one side of the island to the other. My savings quickly dwindled, and I had to go back to work in Southern California. I could not stop thinking of this lush, abundant, tropical part of the world that grew my most favorite fruit! A couple of years went by before I discovered The Caretaker Gazette. At that time, I was living in a van at the skatepark. I could not find affordable housing and I really didn’t want another restaurant job. I have no idea how I found the Gazette, it was pure divine timing. When I did, the first newsletter I received had the EXACT LOCATION to where I wanted to be! I responded to the ad right away. The host of the ad already had a couple of candidates for the position: Landscape Work Trade. I started communication with the ad host and continued to check in twice a week. My determination got me the position! The old candidate fell through and if I could make it to the job by the end of the week, it was mine! Everything worked out! I moved to PARADISE! I was fully living “off the land.” We grew all our own fruits like papaya, banana, so many different avocado varieties, and new fruits I never tried but heard of like breadfruit, rollinia, and sapotes. We had a small vegetable garden. Part of my work trade was to tend to that. I shuffled through compost and mulched with what we had, which were woodchips from fallen trees and old cardboard. I fell in love with compost and its transformational magic! I learned about what “weeds” really are and how they grow because they are needed. I learned what nitrogen fixers are, how to plant canopy systems of different plants so everything could thrive. I discovered how easy it is to eat fruit, drop the seeds in soil and watch them turn into a nursery of tiny trees. The living situation I had was ideal, too. The entire property I was maintaining was about nine acres. I lived on my own private two acres conveniently located to the dirt road where I could walk to hang out with the community. I was in a private trailer. It was a perfect space for one person. It had a micro kitchen, bedroom area and “living room” area that consisted of a table to write, draw, make art, and get creative. We hauled our trash 45 minutes away to the area landfill. It was amazing to see my personal “footprint” of my consumption. Within three months, I got my trash down to one trash bag and one bag of recycling. Living off the land, eating your food that you grow reduces trash exponentially! Purchasing products that use ecologically conscious packaging was also the incentive for buying products online. I could compost this directly into our massive compost piles and use it for garden mulch. Other aspects that could be considered challenges were not having a car or how long it would take for clothing to dry out. No washers or dryers down on my private compound, but I was given the opportunity to share the washer with the owner. Drying clothing was not an option as it uses so much solar power. On sunny days, the solar would charge. I was blessed with a refrigerator and night lighting. During the rainy season, which was most of my time there during the six month stint of my caretaking job, I had to be on top of the power supply and conserve, with the worst case scenario of running a generator to power up.

You never know who will land on your shoulder in the tropics

Fruit galore! Coconut, Rollinia, Avocado, Lilikoi, and Jackfruit

Life changing opportunities had knocked at my door since, and now I have been working on my newest thrill of roller skating here in Southern California, again. I have noticed my life journey is a select few passions that create so much excitement: fruit and action sports. Being in my body is very important to me, so creating a career in roller skating is a blessing. Both my caretaker experience and my roller skate lifestyle have amazing communities that feed my soul. They both keep me using my body, which I find it rare and difficult to find these days with office jobs. When the body is used, the mind becomes clear. I still hold my subscription to the Gazette. I actually posted an ad for my sister’s Central California Coastal property for a “youthful go-getter” to work trade in nature, out of the city life (this California help-wanted ad is on Page 4 of this issue). That one serendipitous discovery of The Caretaker Gazette transformed my life. I recommend it to all my friends who feel life is meaningless and they really need to find their purpose. Even if you aren’t ready to JUMP, take the time to sign up to the Gazette for pure inspiration and possibilities of what life has to offer you. I want to inspire you to go after your dreams, live life out of generosity and pure curiosity of nature. That is what The Caretaker Gazette showed me. You can create life changing opportunities for yourself by trading your abilities and excitements for newfound life experiences. The Caretaker Gazette has given me the most satisfying purposeful feeling that continues to this day. I still open the bi-monthly newsletters just to see what is out there, and there is so much out there! I am so grateful for the Gazette and advocate for you to jump on the opportunities! Follow your DREAMS:) Build relationships with people who are in need of your services. Amazing self-worth is built within, from this newsletter. Now for the tips and tricks of successful caretaking:) It’s an oxytocin economy. When you can give generously and live off the endorphins you just created, it’s the best currency anywhere in the world! Like Buddhists believe, it’s all service work and that is really where we take the most joy from. If you can trust in your efforts, your service, your enthusiasm, and practice giving your heart and soul to these opportunities in the Caretaker, you will find your life purpose:) It takes dedication, determination, and a lot of believing in yourself. I have always played the role of caretaker until this issue. I am now looking for a caretaker. I am looking for people who trust themselves, who act because they authentically know the solution to problems you find when maintaining a home, farm animals, dealing with natural weather conditions, and wildlife. I have learned how to maintain a solar system, water catchment and other skills for living off the grid. I am now looking for these skills in others. I look for people who are “go-getters,” who can see a problem as if it’s their own and know what to do to remedy it. If you can build relationships between the owner and act within yourself as an owner, you too can manifest that for yourself, if that is what you want. I wouldn’t fear taking the jump into a new lifestyle. I had some skills when I started my caretaking position, but the actual experience gradually gave me skills I never would have been interested in. Although I took the job as a landscape work-trade I learned some mechanical skills and technology. I don’t even think of these skills as a part of me. Now, when someone has a problem related to short circuits, a blow in the irrigation, or even flooding, I can direct them to solutions. I also recommend looking inward and finding what gives you enthusiasm, because there is a job for you! If you find animals are your life passion, there are plenty of short-term opportunities here where you can help those in need, and experience places you only dreamed of. I personally discovered how much pleasure and passion came from taking care of the Earth. I absolutely LOVED my opportunities found here and continue to practice them, even in the city. In a world of uncertainty, the stability of knowing all these possibilities exist is security just reading about them. If you can take a leap onto the faith cloud and know you are good for it, sign up for the ads that really ring your bells. I have a list of life experiences I still want to experience. I have yet to make it back to the East Coast of the U.S. by way of the West. I also challenge myself to find even more tropical paradises around the world. If I ever lose my job, The Caretaker Gazette is the first place I will look to be a grape harvester in France or work in a Zen permaculture garden at a Buddhist retreat center in Northern California. Maybe the host of a Costa Rican eco resort is more beautiful than anywhere I have been thus far. I have seen ads all over the world, here, in the Gazette. The best advice I can give is to take time and look at yourself. What brings you joy? What environments do you want to explore? What kind of relationships and friendships do you want to have for a lifetime? These can all be found right here. I challenge you to make 2023 the year of openness and knowing a beautiful life is knocking at your door, just answer an ad:)

Demonstrated mechanical and carpentry skills are a wonderful plus. To be considered, applicant(s) must have individual initiative, a sense of responsibility, have good decision-making skills, be clean, meticulous, and organized. Pets and horses are welcome. There is an old settler cabin on the property. It is partially restored. If you are interested in working on it (and ‘eventually’ moving in), we will add a modest monthly stipend. HELP NEEDED. Our bush block on the western coast of the Coromandel Peninsula occupies a completely secluded valley surrounded by regenerating forest with beautiful views, bush walks and a lovely stream. The only sounds are from birds, the sea, and the stream. Any previous building experience and skill would be very welcome as would the ability to use a chainsaw, log splitter or a scrub-bar (weed eater). This would suit a single person, a couple or two friends – keen to help for a few days while exploring the Coromandel on leisure days. WANT TO HELP BUILD A COMMUNITY? Love the sea? After finishing the building of our boat and our first sea-trial trip, we are presently based on an organic apple farm 40 minutes south of Oslo, where we are focusing on beekeeping as we intend to build up on honey production and queen-breeding this summer. We are a community-based project born over 10 years ago. Involving people from all over the globe, we hope to eventually form a community present both on land and at sea, which will cooperate with eco-villages, sharing the bliss of sustainable living and traveling through organic farming and sailing – connecting places and people across the oceans. If you have any knowledge or interest in permaculture, self-sufficiency, alternative living, etc., don’t hesitate to contact us and share your ideas. Our hopes are for the farm to flourish into a place where food, thoughts, plans, adventures, and – of course – boats, can grow! Please send an email to [Contact info available to subscribers] explaining why you would be interested in our community and include “Sea Gypsy Application” in the Subject Line: so we know you have been reading this. SEEKING AN ONSITE CARETAKER for our manufactured housing community in Kingsland, TX, located one hour west of Austin. This position includes part-time work at $30 per hour and subsidized rent in one of the community’s homes. [Contact info available to subscribers] is nice, clean, and quiet and centrally located in Kingsland. We are a semi-retired couple and have owned and managed Twin Rivers for a decade. There are 30 homes in the community, fifteen are owner occupied and the rest are rentals. We have low turnover and many long-term residents. We have worked hard to create an affordable housing solution for Kingsland that offers folks a nice safe place to call home. We are seeking caretaker(s) who can provide handy-person services, lawn/landscaping services and oversee contractors (plumbers, air-conditioner repairmen, etc.). The base caretaker position is not full-time – some weeks will require more hours than others. “Mowing Season” during the summer will represent a significant amount of work. As we “turn over” rental homes, we are selling them and shifting to a homeowner community. Preparing the homes for sale will provide significantly more work if the caretaker performs remodeling tasks. We are offering significantly discounted rent of $600/month on a three bedroom/two bathroom single wide home. The home has an extra-large front yard providing room for an additional storage shed. Kingsland is a small town located in the Texas Hill Country on Lake LBJ. Kingsland and the Highland Lakes area are known for great boating, fishing, and hiking. Twin Rivers is just down the street from banks, a pharmacy, HEB, a coffee shop, the post office, and restaurants. There are only about 6,000 residents in Kingsland, so there is no traffic and yet nearby towns like Marble Falls provide plentiful shopping and health care options. We are looking for a contentious customer oriented individual or couple who share our values and work ethic. References and background check required. We are proud of Twin Rivers and the reputation we have built, and the right caretaker will be able to take pride in their contributions as well. We will allow one small dog or cat. Please send your resume to [Contact info available to subscribers]

OVERSEER COUPLE NEEDED in East Texas in Van Zandt County. We’re seeking a Christian retired or empty-nest couple (no children) to oversee a 200 acre ranch in Grand Saline. We prefer a couple where one spouse would be on the property most of the time (we do have a large workshop if one is self-employed). Cattle/horse experience preferred but not required to check on cows and horses, no difficult work. Any ranch “work” (including mowing and cleaning houses) would be contracted out. A lovely three bedroom house is provided in exchange for light responsibilities: greet guests, show guests the ropes if unfamiliar with the property, check on and report any issues in the property houses, boats, etc. to the owner, inventory supply needs, check houses after guests leave, etc., mostly there for a presence on the property. Should the couple own cattle and wish to utilize pasture land, this can be a point of discussion. How much rent is lowered/eliminated depends on how much responsibility is taken on. If the couple comes with particular ranch skills (i.e., carpentry, landscaping, etc.), payment beyond waived rent could be discussed on an as needed basis. The job is not complicated, but it would require someone honest with a solid moral character backed up with strong references. Please send resumes to [Contact info available to subscribers]
