Letters to the Editor
Hi Gary, I want to thank you for always answering my emails so quickly! As a long time subscriber I have always been so impressed with the variety of caretaker positions you’ve had over the years and last year was the first time I actually decided to apply. Thanks to you and your great publication I am going to be spending this spring house sitting and property caretaking my way across the country! What a great way to see this great country! Thank you to you and your staff! Lisa M., Burlington, VT
Hi Lisa, thanks for taking the time to share your experience with the Gazette with us. I appreciate your kind words and wish you the best of experiences as you embark on your cross-country adventure. Please keep in touch and feel free to email or call any time if you have a question.
Hi Gary, We just wanted to give you a big THANK YOU! We received at least a dozen responses to our help-wanted ad in the Gazette. After reading through responses from so many very experienced people we now think we have found someone who will be just right for our property. We were both feeling a bit stressed out when we placed our ad because we had been through a run of people who were not the right fit. But immediately we began hearing from such great people responding to our Gazette ad. THANK YOU so very much for your great service! Sincerely, John B. Mendocino, CA
John, thanks for sharing your success story with us. We are glad to hear that, through your Gazette ad, you were finally able to find a qualified caretaker who is a good match for your property. Please spread the good word about the Gazette to other property owners who can use it.
Dear Gary and Gazette staff, what a great service you and your staff are providing. It seems there is something for everyone. I had to admit that I hadn’t heard of your publication until I received it as a gift. 33 years in business, you must be good, given the publications that have come and gone during those years. Please accept my ads – one for a caretaker and petsitter for my home and one for the other side, for me, looking for a position in France and Italy for the summer. Thank you to all of you and I wish you 33 more years of success! Eleanor M., Minneapolis, MN
Hi Eleanor, thank you for your nice message. Most of our subscribers discovered us via word-of-mouth and, many of them, through gift subscriptions. Thank you for placing your ads with us. I’m sure you’ll be able to find a qualified caretaker/petsitter for your own home and positions in Europe for the summer. We have a number of property owners who subscribe to the Gazette in order to find great people like you for their properties. Wishing you all the best!
Congratulations Gary! Just wanted to congratulate you and everyone at the Gazette on celebrating 33 years of publication. Thanks for continuing to provide such great personal service to all of us. Here’s to many more years. Please sign me up for another two years as I continue my lifestyle of adventure and travel. Cheers, Ken L., North Hollywood, CA
Thank you Ken! I appreciate your taking the time to write to us and thank you for renewing your subscription to the Gazette. I hope you continue to enjoy the lifestyle of adventure and travel and thanks for making the Gazette part of it!

We are a boutique hosteria which provides great accommodations offering comfortable rooms complete with Wi-Fi, cable TV, air conditioning or fan, private bathroom and hot water. Our guests and you have access to the pool, Jacuzzi and common areas. Most of our guest rooms have their own unique artistic decoration theme with custom-made driftwood accents and furniture pieces. We are looking for someone versatile who can assist in many different areas, such as providing information about the hosteria, taking reservations, etc. over the phone, Internet help, guest check-in/out, guest service, provide information about local activities, help arrange tours and such, meal preparation, cleaning the kitchen, working the bar/cafeteria, serving guests, help with the laundry, room cleaning, grounds maintenance, pool and Jacuzzi maintenance (knowledge of cleaning, balancing chemicals etc.), woodworking-sculpting, renovating the boat (on land) for use as accommodation, and Yoga instruction or massage ability would be great. Work five hours a day, five days a week. Spanish speaking is a must! It would certainly be a plus and qualify you more if you speak both Spanish and English. We are looking for a commitment of a month minimum – obviously based on mutual compatibility. Depending on how well we do and your situation, perhaps an even longer term like six months would be possible. Together we can investigate appropriate ways to extend your stay in the country if that is the case. Accommodations will depend on availability. You may get a room. If there is more than one volunteer, you may share that room with others. If the rooms are full, you might be captain for a while and live aboard the boat dry docked near the pool. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided. You will be able to do your laundry here too. We have Wi-Fi! The beach is right here so you can enjoy sun, sand and sea. Depending on who we have working with us currently, there are specific needs we are looking to fill. We look forward to communicating with you soon! Please contact [Contact info available to subscribers] (Contact information for these ads is available only to Gazette subscribers)
LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS anytime between May and August 2015 only. We are a Kiwi/Aussie couple in our late 30’s/early 40’s with a primary schooler and a baby. Our eco guest house in beautiful banos is a popular destination for tourists from all around the world, including Ecuadorian. We are looking for volunteer(s) to help with our guests; meeting and greeting, explaining about the surrounds and what activities are on offer, help organize taxis and activities (usually just a phone call is needed). For this position, it is important that you are outgoing, friendly, can problem solve, like chatting with people, can initiate conversations and can talk on a range of topics (hence why we ask for people from late 20’s onwards who have a little bit of life experience). The work is fun as you’ll get to meet many people from all walks of life and hopefully make some long-term friendships. The work is usually pretty easy also. We just need someone here who can speak English, as many of our guests don’t speak Spanish, and make them feel comfortable. Of course, it’s important to speak and understand Spanish also (which means speaking Spanish on the phone sometimes). We ask for eight hours a day for five days, 40 hours on average for the week. This will usually be 2-10pm or 3-11pm and at least one day over the weekend could also be required. Also note that this time isn’t usually spent doing physical hard work. Basically we need a presence in the reception area, there is a lot of down time so there’ll be plenty of time for you to catch up on emails, surf the internet, further study your Spanish, play the guitar, read a book or whatever you fancy. Although we say 40 hours of work per week, usually you’ll only be ‘working’ for up to three to five hours a day. The main thing is that you’re here, in and around the guest house, for at least eight hours a day. When there are few (or no) guests, you can do the shopping, help in our organic garden or other various projects we have around the place. We have wonderful local employees to do the cooking and cleaning so it’d be very rare for you to need to contribute with these. You may need to help serve meals some evenings though. You will be available for a minimum of three weeks. You will be compensated with a free private room with bathroom, breakfast, discounted Spanish lessons, drinking water, tea/coffee/drinking chocolate, Wi-Fi and a great space to chill. If you’re still interested in the role, please get in touch and we’ll talk further. Thanks and chao for now. Please email [Contact info available to subscribers] (Contact information for these ads is available only to Gazette subscribers)

Jeanne and Rob at the French Chateau-style estate
Jeanne and Rob became a team 25 years ago while working in yachting in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. They spent the next ten years running vessels in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, and U.S. waters. They worked as Captain/ Engineer and Mate/Chef on motor and sailing vessels to 250-feet, private, charter, and commercial. During that time they continued their marine education to reach their present U.S. Coast Guard Masters 1600-ton license, with an endorsement of 3000-tons for offshore supply vessels. During the year that they were threatened by and survived eight hurricanes, all while responsible for their client’s multi-million dollar vessel, the couple decided it was time to take their skill set ashore. At this point The Caretaker Gazette entered their lives and hasn’t left. The first position Jeanne and Rob found through the Gazette was on a 400-acre property in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia in the late 1990’s. It was a wonderful learning experience, however, a considerable reduction in income. After 18 months a position in Aspen, Colorado was offered in the Gazette. Upon being selected, Jeanne and Rob left Virginia with warm wishes and wonderful references. The Aspen property was busier, with much more entertaining. There were new systems to learn and maintain. The client’s food sensitivity required a new approach to meal preparations. In Virginia, Rob had been responsible for a State inspected earthen dam and lake. In Aspen, it was a two acre trout pond and irrigation system fed with water according to a “State water rights agreement.” Since it was a mountainside location opposite Ajax Mountain, it was not unusual to find black bear floating in the pond, elk grazing on the plantings, or fox seeking attention. Over the years the couple had read the issues of the Gazette that came to them and talked about which positions they could fill. So after almost four years in Aspen, when health issues changed their client’s needs, they were ready to seek the next opportunity. Ever since receiving their first issue when Jeanne and Rob first subscribed to the Gazette, they have shared copies and info with all those who asked about their life choice. Then, once again, about 11 years ago, the Gazette came through and the next adventure began for Jeanne and Rob. This time it was a combination of water and land. It was a 38,000 square foot estate on a gated three plus acre property on the Lake St. Clair shoreline, near Detroit, Michigan. The audition for the position was a gathering in the home for 300 people as a fundraiser for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Entertaining was a large part of this position. Family gatherings for the property owners consisted of 50 – 75 adults and children. The property was made for entertaining with indoor and outdoor pools, tennis court, golf green, and loads of other amenities. Rob’s duties were mostly exterior, however, with responsibilities in security, driving, and keeping all systems online and functioning, including cleaning a 65-ft yacht. Jeanne was tasked with maintaining the interior, cooking, event planning, flower arranging, interior plant care, and seeing to the needs of client and family. As in all things, time brings changes and leads to the need to re-evaluate and modify. The clients had reached a point where it was time to downsize as changing health issues combined with family spreading and maturing. Their needs had changed, hence a reduction in staffing. So, it is back to the Gazette again with the hope that there is yet another chapter to be written in the story of Jeanne’s and Rob’s caretaking career. Over the years together, the couple have taken on a variety of challenges and acquired many skills to overcome those tests. Jeanne has a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics from California State Polytechnic College. She used it as a basis to build a wide repertoire of tasty, healthy food styles. One client sent her to a one-on-one culinary class with a famous chef in Paris. She has also taken numerous specialty food courses. Jeanne is a firm believer in using local ingredients in her cooking. This means a weekly trip to the farmer’s market in order to maximize taste and nutrition. Rob has acquired commercial licenses in fixed wing aircraft and hot air balloons. His degree in Aerospace Technology led to ten years as an air traffic controller. He went to school for a commercial trucking license and received endorsements for tankers, tandems, and hazardous materials. He has been called upon to perform the task of chauffeur for some clients. His degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management was earned while employed in a three-star restaurant. Both Jeanne and Rob received training in first aid and firefighting as part of their Masters U.S. Coast Guard licenses. While they continue to look for that next unique caretaking opportunity, the couple are currently based in in the Reno, Nevada area in order to be near Jeanne’s aging mother. Having found so many unique opportunities through the Gazette over the decades, Jeanne and Rob are sure their next assignment is just waiting for them to apply to, via The Caretaker Gazette.

HOUSING PROVIDED in exchange for work/caretaking in Westhampton Beach, NY. We like to have eight to nine caretakers at the Inn over the winter with varied responsibilities. We already have five so three to four more would be great. In most cases, these are not salaried positions but free housing in exchange for work. The number of hours required is contingent upon skills and level of housing required. The housing is available until May 15, 2015. However, for those with really special skills/trades such as skilled carpentry or plumbing or those who are technologically savvy enough to upgrade our website and integrate with online travel agencies and an online booking engine for us, it could be extended. In fact, if one can really manage the hotel which would include the above and social marketing, etc., there might be a small stipend. The Grassmere Inn is located at 7 Beach Lane, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978. We also need some people to do housekeeping/maintenance. There is not a ton of housekeeping as we only have 14 guest rooms which are rarely fully occupied. Additionally, we will frequently have extended stay guests who receive no housekeeping at all. However, there is always something to do. We would also consider someone with special carpentry/plumbing skills for fewer hours in exchange for housing/expenses if they can help us with some projects (floors and bathroom improvements). The number of work hours required will be contingent upon level of housing needed, how many people, and responsibilities. Absolutely no smoking. No experience necessary for any of the positions. If interested, please contact [Contact info available to subscribers] (Contact information for these ads is available only to Gazette subscribers). Thank you.

Norway
INTERESTED IN SELF-SUFFICIENCY? Want to help build a community? Love the sea? On an organic farm a few hours north of Oslo, our collective is for anyone keen to learn, share ideas, and work hard. We are building a sailboat and when she is finished we want to sail the world, visiting other eco-villages, collecting knowledge and traveling in the most eco-friendly way possible. Anyone who helps us out will have the chance to join our crew. We also work on the farm, building up the infrastructure to create a stable base for our community. On the boat side the biggest thing is that all the inner plating and insulation are all finished up, the bathroom (wet-room) is plated and all water tanks are welded into position. Next big thing is to get the engine into the boat. We have to lift it up three meters and then two meters sideways. It’s a little messy but we are working on this right now. Weight of the engine is around 500 kg so we need a hoist-system. The volunteers took some days off to hitch-hike to the west coast, and came happily back home with pictures of fiords, and camping outside in the mountains close to the glaciers. The summer has been extremely warm one so contrary to what I was thinking that they will almost freeze to death they got back to the farm sun-burned with a happy smile on their faces. During the next few weeks we will be harvesting what we have been planting this year and we will work on the engine and rigging, so if you have any skills you might think will be useful please feel free to contact us. We also looking for crew for sailing across the Atlantic, heading towards Cuba when the boat is finished so if you find that fancy please contact us. Please send an email to [Contact info available to subscribers] (Contact information for these ads is available only to Gazette subscribers) explaining why you would be interested in our community and please place this in the Subject Line: SEA GYPSY APLLICATION so we know you have been reading this. Love from [Contact info available to subscribers] (Contact information for these ads is available only to Gazette subscribers) – a sea gypsy tribe of tomorrow!

Retired corporate lawyer (60) from The Netherlands, while having a sabbatical, would like to look after your (holiday) home in your absence, preferably in Europe or the coastal regions of the US, but not limited to these, for a period of two weeks to two years. I should welcome a dog or two to walk daily and a cat to talk to. I understand that nobody likes the idea of a stranger living in their home and I am therefore willing to come and introduce myself, to assure you that I appreciate that looking after your home and pets requires even more diligence than when looking after my own. I do not expect you to appoint me without having your trust and you may expect the best from me, as I expect from you in return. I am happily married and during my watch over your property, my wife will visit me a couple of times, depending on the length of my stay. I am not a handyman or a gardener, but I am willing to oversee any staff who perform these duties. I speak all major European languages and Dutch. I smoke after dinner and drink wine moderately, not from your cellar. Please email [Contact info available to subscribers] (Contact information for these ads is available only to Gazette subscribers)
