Letters to the Editor
Hi Gary, thanks for providing your email broadcast service. I got 10 responses within 24 hours of my help-wanted email broadcast and found the perfect person to housesit for me! I will spread the good word about the Gazette, as this seems to be an excellent site you have. Regards, V.C. Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Valerie, thanks for writing. I’m glad you had such a quick and positive response to your email broadcast and that you were able to find the perfect person to housesit for you.
Hi Gary! Thank you for providing such a great service through your Gazette issues and frequent email updates. It was through one of your updates that I was able to find my current caretaking position! I’m finally going to live my dream. Will keep you posted. Thanks again, M.R., Sacramento, CA
Thanks for your nice note, Mike. Congratulations and best of luck in your new position. Please keep us updated and we may feature you in a future caretaker profile.
Gary and family, just wanted to say thanks. What a great investment the $90 for the help-wanted ad turned out to be. I have received about a dozen responses – eight of which are really good matches for what I need in Costa Rica – and four are outstanding. It is going to give me much more freedom to have people to call upon who will be trustworthy caretakers for my house and beloved canine companion, Lobo. Thanks for the great service you offer. Best regards, B. B. Port Townsend, WA
Barbara, thank you for advertising in The Caretaker Gazette. I appreciate having you as a help-wanted advertiser and I appreciate the time you took to tell us about your experience. I’m very happy to hear that as a result of your ad in the Gazette you will have outstanding caretakers for your property in Costa Rica, and Lobo.
Thank you, Gary. Your publication does such a great job for me. The caretaker who is leaving now was hired through my ad in The Caretaker Gazette. He is great and I hate to lose him but he has a heart problem and must go back to Salmon, Idaho for doctor’s care. Your Gazette has always provided quality personnel for me and I have used the publication to find ranch caretakers help for many years. R.T. Coeur d Alene, ID
Thanks Roberta. I’m glad to hear that your Gazette ads for ranch caretakers have been so successful. We look forward to running another ad for you so you can find another great ranch caretaker to replace the one who is leaving.
I love the Gazette, but get so disappointed when I email one of your advertisers and receive no response. Why do people advertise and then never bother to respond? P.W. Chino, CA
Peter, when we place ads from both property owners and prospective caretakers we always ask that they take the time to respond to each applicant or prospective employer. Whenever possible, we try to follow up to ensure this is done but unfortunately, not all advertisers take the time to respond.

VOLUNTEER needed in San Ignacio, Misiones province. I built this little paradise in a really very beautiful, tourist destination not only because of its important Jesuits ruins, but also for the breathtaking virgin nature in this green northern Argentina province. San Ignacio is a rather small village and we are very patient, calm and friendly persons so surely staying with us should be very relaxing for you. We warmly welcome volunteers (also with their child) basically to have fresh air from outside these backwoods – in addition I love good lively company and also need a little help in our hotel/bungalows Pragamisiones. Since this occupation is a mainly Female matter – I look for just one skilled Lady (better if not vegetarian) and of course it’s up to you when you arrive or how long you decide to stay here, take it as a kind of working vacation-ecotourism. Please, a minimum stay of two weeks or longer is required. I wake up at about seven and prepare the rich breakfast for our clients, clean the bungalows, wash, cook, shop, arrange reservations, talk with tourists and so on. My local collaborators help me a lot so if you dear Volunteer want to join our compact team and give us a hand during your mornings (six days a week) – thank you in advance – while in the afternoons you will have enough time to explore beautiful national parks around Iguazu Falls and doing what you desire in this natural Eden. You will have your own bathroom and nice room with everything inside. My house is at your disposal and hope you will also appreciate my international cuisine. I do not have TV, that’s why we live so happily but don’t worry there’s a good internet connection including Wi-Fi. Please email [Contact info available to subscribers]
IN THE BREATHTAKING WINE countryside just outside General Alvear stands a farm that needs a caretaker. The farm is a nursery that grows vines that are then sold to the area’s many thriving vineyards. The current owner, who lives elsewhere, hopes to find a mature couple to live on the 15-acre farm and tend the vines. This is not a place, or a job, for anyone who does not like working the earth, or who is incapable of somewhat rigorous labor. This is farming done largely by hand and by back. The right candidates will be conversant in Spanish, self-motivating and love to have their hands in the dirt; they will be responsible for the cultivation of the vines, upkeep of the property and general maintenance. Although the process is labor intensive, it is a manageable workload, and the current owner is ready to train the caretakers in all aspects of the nursery operation. In return for the farm work, the caretakers will live rent-free in a fully furnished, modern house. The caretakers will be responsible for paying the house utilities of approximately U.S. $100 per month, including high-speed internet, and the care of two lovable and loyal dogs. A reliable vehicle will be essential, preferably a truck. In addition to the free rent, the caretakers will receive a share of the vine sale when sold the following spring. This opportunity requires a one-year commitment and lease, with possible extensions. This position will be filled within one month, and all candidates are subject to a background check. For more information about this opportunity, please contact [Contact info available to subscribers]

WE ARE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS for our art collective and organic farm in Orosi, 25 minutes from Cartago, where we are building earthships and yurts, buildings made from recycled materials. We would like creative, self-motivated volunteers to join us, and help build or farm. The project is in the early stages so conditions are basic, but our ultimate goal is to create a bartering community along the lines of “Burning Man” and “Black Rock City”. It is free for volunteers to stay here camping on the farm. We have a hut with cooking facilities, a compost toilet and water but currently no electricity. At the moment we club together to buy food from town and cook communally, though eventually the farm will provide food for volunteers. Transport from Orosi to the farm and laundry is provided. Orosi is a small, safe, non-touristy town in a picturesque valley, with hot springs nearby. Supermarkets, vegetable shops, internet facilities and a bank with ATM can be found here. Please bring clothes that you do not mind getting dirty and rubber boots. If you are able to bring your own camping gear with you this would be great, though it is not a requirement. The minimum stay here is one week but generally volunteers stay on longer than they intend. For hard working, like minded volunteers there is a possibility of staying on more permanently as our neighbors on the farm. Navigating the Bus in Singapore
Nora was busy running a successful financial planning practice in Toronto, Canada, when she realized her life, and life’s ambitions of living around the world, were passing her by. She couldn’t satisfy her dreams of travel with simple vacations; she wanted to understand life around the world: where people shop, what they eat, how they socialize, and what they talk about around the dinner table. Even after spending a month on vacation in South Africa, Nora returned home with more questions than answers, and realized she was unwilling to wait for a conventional retirement to finally explore the world of long-term travel she so wanted to explore. So at the age of 30, she sold everything she owned, including the business, the sports car, and other accoutrements of a comfortable lifestyle, to travel the world full-time, choosing not to pass through each destination, but to really live there, experiencing life as locally as possible. That was in 2006. Since then she has traveled through and lived in over 30 countries and counting. She volunteers or house-sits in trade for her accommodation, and her location independent writing career takes care of the rest of her expenses. Thus, her full-time travel lifestyle is financially sustainable. Hence, Nora is The Professional Hobo. In the early stages of researching travel opportunities, Nora found a link to The Caretaker Gazette, and was intrigued by a lifestyle of living rent-free in various far-flung destinations, with spare time to hone a craft such as writing, a career Nora was in the throes of developing. She loved receiving the bi-monthly newsletters and regular email updates, offering opportunities around the world and daring her to dream about her next destination. When the world is your oyster, where do you begin? One day while skimming through a Caretaker Gazette newsletter in 2007, an opportunity in Hawaii caught her eye. Hawaii was never high on her list of places to visit (not striking her as a cultural Mecca), but she couldn’t deny the strong intuitive feeling that this was to be her first caretaking experience. After some Skype conversations with the owner, she (and her partner at the time) was off to the Big Island of Hawaii, where they lived and volunteered on a remote permaculture property, surrounded by lush rainforests and fresh tropical fruits they had never seen the likes of before. In trade for her accommodation (a private yurt with dreamy outdoor shower), Nora milked the goats and fed the chickens; a task she grew to quite enjoy, despite the stark contrast to her former life of being in the corporate financial spotlight. Then, in 2008, en route to Australia after some time in Asia, another ad in The Caretaker Gazette caught her eye, and in the same way as had happened in Hawaii, Nora just knew this caretaking opportunity in Australia would be her next home. For six months, Nora did landscaping, cleaning, and even led eco-treks on Llamas on a massive beautiful rural property with guest cottages. She lived in a gorgeous bluestone cottage with a romantic fireplace surrounded by mountains and rolling hills. With an animal sanctuary also on the property, a rescued kangaroo (which had been rehabilitated to the wild, but occasionally came back to say hello) fell in love with Nora and followed her around constantly, literally living on her doorstep! But soon enough it was time to move on, and Nora enjoyed life in Australia for another year, despite being involved in the horrific Victorian Bushfires of February 2009, Australia’s worst-ever natural disaster. After splitting up with her partner, Nora moved on from Australia to travel, volunteer, and house-sit in New Zealand and throughout Europe. She filmed a couple of television shows as a featured travel expert, and had quite a few adventures in 2010, including riding 16,000kms of Australia’s iconic railways (11,000kms in 11 days)! And 2011 had also been equally adventurous. She returned to New Zealand to volunteer at a favorite spot called Mana Retreat, a caretaking position she found through word of mouth. She also returned home to Canada for a visit (as she has done every two years since leaving), and took on the Ultimate Train Challenge, 30 days by train from Lisbon to Saigon! While in the middle of the train challenge, a caretaker host from the Gazette who Nora had written to a few months earlier returned her email, inviting her to house and dog-sit on the Caribbean island of Grenada for three months. Well! How can you turn an offer like that down? Nora hopped on a plane (many planes, actually) from Saigon to Grenada, and is currently enjoying the tropical island life on a little piece of paradise, while caring for the homeowners’ lovely dog. What’s next? Nora is currently reading all the Gazette email updates and newsletters in search of her next adventure. In the meantime, she is working on her second book, and continuing to write up a storm with the free time that her full-time traveling and caretaking lifestyle provides.

Guatemala
LOOKING FOR A DOG/house sitter in Jaibalito, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala from mid-April through early July 2012 (the rainy season here). You should pack mud boots, though when the rainy season is agreeable, it’s lovely. We have warm, sunny days with afternoon rain and into the night. At its worst, it can be awful and intense. You pay $20 for electric and $15 for gas, as well as walk my dog, Zita a minimum of two times a day for 20 minutes. More/longer are welcome! You have to dote on her, bathe her, and spend nights at home. Because of boat only access, this means you’re in the pueblo after 5:30pm. The property does better with some care. A gardener comes 10 hours a week and he knows how to keep busy on his own. However, with the dry season, an hour of watering a day is needed (mostly with sprinkler but some hand watering). I’ve had 8-year-olds and their Moms, 65-year-old retired men, a couple in their late 30’s, and others stay here. Life here is somewhat physical with the boat passage, walking, etc. It’s not for everyone. The most important criteria is a dog lover who has respect for the house and awareness of the responsibility that comes with that charge. There is no Internet or television in the house. Posada Jaibalito has Internet and Wi-Fi and is only a three minute walk away. Internet (for those who need high capacity) is best from Panajachel, a 30 minute boat ride away. The house is a two bedroom/one bath, with kitchen, hot water shower, and is approximately 1,000 sq. ft. The property is fenced. Zita has the run of the yard and house. It is a five minute walk from the public boat dock. Basic groceries can be bought in Jaibalito. More specialized items must be bought in Pana, a 30 minute boat ride away. Please email [Contact info available to subscribers] if you are interested. Thanks.
