A VOLUNTEER COUPLE is needed as Park Hosts to provide visitor assistance at Holy Ground Battlefield Park, on weekends and holidays from April to September (Labor Day), 2009. Responsibilities would include greeting visitors; making routine patrols in the park; checking for minor violations; reporting maintenance problems; explaining the day use fee to boaters and swimmers, securing the park at closing. I’m writing to complain because I was told they could not represent me unless I attended their Institute or took one of their home study courses. I think this is unfair! For the past eight years I have been trading gardening services for rent where I live on a 150 year old, 20-acre avocado ranch in Carpinteria, CA. The Caldwell family originally homesteaded the property around 1850. The land was covered with walnut, apricot, nectarine, peach, lemon, orange, guava, cherimoya, pomegranate, macadamia nut, avocado trees and more. The legacy of the Caldwell farming history permeates to this day as the original trees served as grafting material for many of the exotic fruit trees in the area today. The ranch is mainly comprised of orange and avocado trees for export now. The ranch is also home to some of the largest oak, sycamore and eucalyptus groves in Santa Barbara. Because of this there are many varieties of birds as well; robins, woodpeckers, finches, doves, pigeons, blackbirds, hawks, even an occasional rare California condor roam this area. This is especially important right now as infestations of apple moth and oak moth have been discovered. This year the Department of Agriculture has set out thousands of traps using pheromones to control these pests naturally. Of course the birds are the best natural control as we now have thousands of birds eating these pests daily. Quite a treat to have literally hundreds of birds at a time on the lawn area playing and eating! Nature at its best!

I originally began tending the grounds at the ranch house in 1979 as the owner and operator of Ladybug Gardening and continued maintenance of the ranch for about 10 years. I lived on another ranch across town at the time raising my two children, milk goats, chickens and a huge organic garden with vegetables and raspberries. It was back in the 80’s when the local farmer’s market began here and we were one of the first farmers to bring our fresh produce to the public. I also love to make jams and jellies throughout each year, making use of all the wonderful fruit available here. The house is decorated with many Christmas trees and angels throughout and up throughout the year. It truly is Christmas here year round! Then each December 26, we have “goodie day” where all the neighbors as well as family come in to enjoy many treats. It’s always an interesting time here at the house filled with photographs and history of the past. In 1989 I moved to Oregon as a severe drought hit the Santa Barbara area. Many of the trees and plants died at this time. During my time in Oregon I worked for Bear Creek Corporation; Harry and David (a fruit company) and Jackson and Perkins (a rose and flower catalog company) where I collected many special varieties of roses and perennials. When I left Oregon I brought with me All these special plants I loved so. Little did I know I would plant most of these plants at the ranch house to replace those that were lost during the drought. In 1998, the owners decided to retire to the ranch; the original 1898 structure was refurbished and a new wing added as well. It was a long two years in building a three car garage, a studio above. Sadly, whatever plants that lived through the drought did not make it through the construction stage. Even the double white poinsettias some 15 ft. tall died during the construction, which hurt. Finally in the year 2000, the family moved in and I was asked to reside at the ranch, rent-free, in exchange for maintaining the rose garden, flower beds, and the irrigation system. When I returned in 2000, I replanted the gardens. Today all 40 roses are either David Austin English roses or heritage fragrant hybrid teas or climbers. In the surrounding gardens there are now double poinsettias, hydrangeas, fuchsias, begonias, lycoris, agapanthus, anemones, to name a few. Taking care of the gardens, watering, fertilizing, pruning are my main duties but over time I have become part of the family and now help to look after Kay and Tony, who are nearly 80 years old. I am also a CNA (certified nurse’s aide), my duties now include occasional care giving, cleaning and cooking at times. Over the past eight years I have also gained the trust of many clients in California, Oregon and Hawaii performing house and pet sitting services through my private company Ladybug Services. I have had the pleasure of caretaking many homes, ranches and pets in beautiful places. It truly is a fun lifestyle! In 2004 I also became a loan originator in the financial industry and also got my insurance license in 2005.
