Sheri Lynn Wilson

Sheri Lynn Wilson was born and raised in a small town in Iowa. Sheri recalls, “The extent of my travel experiences as a child and young teen were family trips to our vacation home on a little lake in Nisswa, Minnesota every summer.” Sheri’s first trip out of the U.S.A. came much later in life when, in her early 20’s, she spent a week in Cozumel, Mexico. According to Sheri, “I was hooked. Mexico became my newfound love. I knew that someday I would not only go back to Mexico for another vacation, but I had dreams that I would eventually wind up living there, and I eventually did.” After graduating from high school in Davenport, Iowa, Sheri attended cosmetology school and, for the next ten years, ran a hair salon in Oklahoma. However, Sheri says, “After a decade, I was tired, worn out, and I finally said to myself, ‘what have I really accomplished besides debt and stress?'” It was at that point that Sheri relocated to Mexico to co-captain a 36-foot trawler in the Sea of Cortez. She spent six months learning how to read charts and how to care for a power boat at sea. After this experience Sheri found, “I quickly realized that I could live a lifestyle that allowed me to travel. I felt I had a lot to offer the caretaking profession. So, after reading The Caretaker Gazette for the first time, I started applying for caretaking jobs.” She responded to an ad in the Gazette, and accepted a caretaking position on Roatan, an island off Honduras. On Roatan, Sheri’s responsibilities included caretaking a large, waterfront, multi-million-dollar estate. She had her own living quarters, took care of staff, and provided security for the homeowners while they were sailing on their yacht. Her skills in running and caring for power boats also came in handy on Roatan.

Sheri’s next caretaking assignments brought her to Baja, Mexico, where she spent four years living and working on off-the-grid homes on the beach. In addition to property and pet care, Sheri learned how to operate and maintain solar power systems. Once again, her skill with power boats and navigation were put to good use on the waterfront properties. Sheri notes, “I came back to the U.S. a little over a year ago and started sifting through the Gazette, looking for my next job. Through the Gazette, I wound up securing a caretaking job on a nice ranch style property in the Santa Fe, New Mexico area.” In addition to caring for horses, cows, a bull, dogs, and cats, she was responsible for maintaining the solar system. Sheri recalls, “The owners were very good to me and taught me a lot about large animal care, life, and not trying to control everything around me so much.” When that assignment ended, Sheri sought a position near the ocean. Although she loved the landscape and terrain of the Santa Fe area, she missed living on the water. She recalls, “I put my 30 day notice in, and started searching the jobs once again in the trusty Gazette. Via another Gazette ad, I am now caretaking a very private island off the New England coast.” Sheri is responsible for keeping trespassers off the private island, communicating with and maintaining good relations with the U.S. Coast Guard and local harbormasters, and looking after privately-owned vacation homes, some of which have been passed down for many generations. According to Sheri, “I am entirely off the grid here as well, and there are no cars, restaurants or movie theatres here but I am within a 2½ mile boat ride from all that. It is a lush, exquisite place, quiet, tranquil, and mystical.” Sheri sums up, “How long will I be here? No telling. At some point I will have no choice but to move on to a new destination, a new adventure. I am used to off-the-grid living, but am also familiar with and quite capable of caretaking fine homes, and with my former management skills, I can tackle just about anything that might come my way. I have made this my career, and will be willing to entertain other opportunities as they present themselves. I am open to long term arrangements as well.
