Letters to the Editor
Hello Gary, we just received our latest CG by mail with a notice on the envelope that it is our last paid issue. We are in transition so will not be renewing right now as our address is likely to change along with our lives. You have been in business for 37 years and I think we were probably one of your first private advertisers. We have found good folks to caretake for us here in southern Belize through your publication and we have told a great many people about CG and they have become subscribers themselves. Thank you and your team for doing such a fine job for so many people all over the world for all these years. Best wishes for continued success in your worthy endeavor. We hope to be back on your subscription list in a few months’ time. Tropically yours, Tanya R., Punta Gorda, Belize
Hi Tanya, thanks for writing and for all your support over the decades. We wish you the best in your move, and look forward to hearing back from you in the future.
I wanted to let you know that you have a very effective publication. The Situations-Wanted ad we placed in the Gazette resulted in about a dozen contacts and several offers. Even though we haven’t found a position that is the right fit yet I’m sure we’ll find just the right match in the very near future. The contacts we’ve received have given us some great ideas and shown us how many possibilities are out there. Chris and Jess J., Fresno, CA
Hi Chris and Jess, thanks so your message. We have more property owners subscribing now than we’ve ever had before! They’re trying to find people to handle their property needs. In addition to running their Caretaker Help-Wanted ads, these property owners also utilize our Situations Wanted ads to find help for their properties.
Hi Gary, can you please renew my subscription so I can receive the newest issue of The Caretaker Gazette? I will give you a call with my updated credit card information. I’ve always had such a great response to my caretaker wanted ads. It seems many people save their old issues and I’m happy to say that has really expanded the number of applicants I can choose from. I am so impressed with the quality of people who contact me along with their seriousness, experience and sincerity. Through your Gazette and my ads, I have actually made many lifelong friends! Their companionship and help have been priceless. I’m off to Australia next winter (summer Down Under) and have already made contact with some of your subscribers there who I hope to stay with. When I’m done with my travel there I will welcome your Australian advertisers into my home here. Thank you for the great service you provide! Gloria K., Venice, Florida.
Gloria, I’m glad to hear that your caretaker-wanted ads in the Gazette have resulted in so many positive responses to help you with your property needs. It sounds like your property will be in good hands. Please spread the good word about the Gazette to other property owners who are looking for quality caretakers and house sitters.
Dear Gary, I have just finalized my plans to spend a month in Hawaii! After reading the ad in your Gazette, I contacted the wonderful lady who placed the ad. In no time at all, all the pieces fell together. As you might imagine, I am so excited to have this opportunity. I have been a subscriber for a couple of years now and so many of the locations and opportunities interested me but until now I never actually applied. I just took early retirement and being a healthy and active single woman I realized the time to do this was now. I’m excited about this new phase in life and all the great possibilities I see for the future. I’m planning to tell everyone I meet who is at a similar stage of life about your Caretaker Gazette! Sharon D., Philadelphia, PA
Sharon, I’m very happy to read about your success in using the Gazette. Please keep in touch and let us know how things work out for you in Hawaii. Thanks for spreading the good word about the Gazette and your success in using it as you begin your retirement – and best of luck to you.

Chuck Friedland – Property Caretaking, an adventurous life Address: [Contact info available to subscribers] Interests: bicycle riding, cross country motorcycle touring, gardening and pruning, vintage car rebuilding, food cart building, travel everywhere, internet research for new materials and products, food from all over; both eating/making it Quotes: Remember to interact with everyone and everything. Make it an adventure and not a job Chuck Friedland
Chuck Friedland
Hello there! I hope this serves as a window of opportunity for not only myself, but to all who read this. My name is Chuck Friedland and I am a 66-year-old caretaker living in a 35-year-old mindset. I still believe that with enough effort, anything is possible and you should never limit yourself to one way of thinking about anything this life of ours has to throw at us or offer up! It’s all so interesting, exciting, and challenging. And don’t we love a great challenge! My work life started at a young age with having my own snow shoveling route and later, with a lot of the same people, a lawn mowing route when I was 12-years-old. The money earned from that small business that started me on the way to one of my lasting enjoyments in life: bicycle riding, racing and later cross country touring, which I still do to this day. In addition to bicycle riding and touring and cross country motorcycle touring, my hobbies also include gardening and pruning, vintage car rebuilding, food cart building, travel everywhere, internet research for new materials and products, and food from all over; both eating and making it. My second work adventure was for my father, when I was 15-years-old. He ran the first drive-thru burger place in Spokane, Washington where I served as the prep guy, janitor, head burger flipper, and, by the age of 17, assistant manager. I have been in the restaurant business in one way or the other ever since (buying, selling, building, and equipment sales) and recently closed my own paella catering company that I ran for 12 years due to a parent passing away. At 18 I took a job working for a local Spokane nursery. I was helped by the fact that I did all yard work around our family home and was also trained by a 70-year-old tree pruner who had spent his life in that profession. I have spent the last 48 years enjoying it myself, having my own gardening businesses for many years which lead me to oversee the Japanese Gardening Exposition for the City of Spokane. I have been a property caretaker for around 35 years, and as subscriber to The Caretaker Gazette for twenty years now, I’ve taken many caretaking jobs they’ve advertised. I am currently caretaking an Alaskan fishing lodge located some 300 miles northwest of Anchorage. I got the Alaska lodge position by answering their ad through the Gazette. The lodge owner interviewed me over the phone after receiving my credentials and five days later I was on a first plane to Anchorage, then a second one to Dillingham and the next day on a single engine Cessna Cub flight to the lodge. I was dropped off at the lodge and stayed there for the following six months. Over the years, I’ve also been a property caretaker for several private estates in Spokane and Vancouver, Washington, Rancho Santa Fe, California, Hayden, Idaho, and Lahina, Hawaii. Those estate caretaker positions gave me experience learning to care for and maintain all of my own equipment, as well as operating lots of different heavy and light rental equipment on the various properties and I am still enjoying it all. Just last summer I helped out a personal friend of 35 years for six months get past a surgery that kept him from his landscape business for a while.
I am a very organized individual and take great pride in all my work, for both myself and anything that I may be associated or involved with! Tikchik Narrows Lodge in Alaska, near Dillingham, is more than great. It’s a fly in fishing lodge locating in the Bristol Bay area of southwestern Alaska. The owner flew me and all my gear coming and going. They also put me up in hotels and bought my meals, coming and going. They paid for all my gas, food and gave me carte blanche while I was on the property to use or go do anything I wanted. While working there, I had the use of a 4 wheeler, snow mobile, boat, and the owner even gave me his cross country skis to use. As the property caretaker for the Alaska lodge I’ve shoveled lots of snow off the lodge decks and gathered firewood. The owners even bought me a seasonal out-of-state fishing license when I got there. They are super nice people to work for – and am thinking about doing it again next year! Most of the time at Tikchik was spent looking up numbers off of equipment, snow removal, going out on the snowmobile looking for and cutting firewood. After this was done, most of my days were spent just out having fun snowshoeing, cross country skiing, walking the shoreline of the lake in the water with my waders on (my favorite thing to do). If you are in the cold like that it is surprising how clean you stay as when there’s 16′ of snow and no cars or other people around. The snow is a very clean substance. I actually wore the same three pairs of jeans for the entire six months I was there. In other words you don’t have to bring a whole lot of clothes with you when you go to Alaska just make sure they’re warm ones!

Chuck’s 12th year as a Paella Chef with over 400 pans served
Clear Lake, California was a three week caretaking gig looking after a 1940’s old lake resort for the current caretakers who were going on vacation. The Clear Lake position was also an emergency ad posted in the Gazette. The permanent caretakers had lost their people that were coming to look after the property while they took an already paid-for vacation rental and I took a friend and headed out two days later to help them out. The owner there was wonderful and on the property during our entire stay. I stayed in one of the old log cabins and helped the owner out by running errands. On the morning we were scheduled to leave was the start of the huge California fires and we had four foot flames on both sides of the road as we left the property. We finally ended up leaving eight hours later. It burned up a large group of houses and we could see propane tanks exploding on the hillside in front of us. I was also a property caretaker on Maui, Hawaii. It was another great experience. I worked for four different branches (two brothers, a sister, an ex-wife, and all the children) of the same family for twelve years. I found them all to be really fun, wonderful people who I am still friends with today. My last position on Maui was for four years. I went there for a millennium party with one of the family’s brothers. It took four months to organize and execute the millennium party. The family also owned a 22 acre ranch and estate in Ridgefield, Washington that I flew back to take care of. I then packed up the family’s estate there and went down to care for their newly purchased home in Rancho Santa Fe, California. This led to my starting a successful paella catering business that I owned, managed, and served as a paella chef for a dozen years. My caretaker advice: To start with, my path to being a caretaker was not like your normal trail to caretaker stardom. I started out being a professional gardener with my own business for 25 years. As a professional gardener, my great clients would often ask me to do work on their other properties. That really started all the traveling and working on their second homes, rentals, and businesses that brought the idea of being a professional property caretaker to light. Having a well-rounded work experience along with a positive can-do attitude will go a long way in getting you down the road to a great travel/caretaker gig! I have learned with anything we do in life there are always difficulties in getting to the right place so here are just a few, learned from experience, suggestions that should get you where your heart desires. When you begin the process of applying for a caretaking job, ask many questions. If you are not getting the answers to suit your needs then it’s probably not the right fit for you. You also want to make sure to ask if they have very specific questions about you. You want a good fit with your prospective employers. Before accepting a position, send and ask for pictures of everything. Some gigs come with extras like houses, trailers, cabins, cars to drive, snowmobiles, boats, etc. Make sure you request and receive photos of all of these. Be sure to ask about things like furnishings, utensils, laundry facilities, food, and what is supplied and what isn’t! Most importantly, make sure all the pictures are current. Just because it looked great at one time, doesn’t mean that is in useable or livable condition now. Short-term gigs are great to get your caretaker feet wet but come with more expenses than a long-term gig would – such as you paying for your own transportation to get there, staying in someone’s personal home instead of a separate apartment, house, etc. In some cases, shared accommodations means that you are living in a total stranger’s house with none of your own belongings around. Be sure to ask yourself if you are okay with that. Again, when you have just driven halfway across the country to accept a position without asking the right questions, surprises are not fun. In my nearly 35 years of caretaking and 20 years as a Gazette subscriber, I’ll refer you back to my earlier advice: Questions, questions, questions and photos. Homeless with style. It’s a personal choice about what to do with your own belongings when you leave for an undetermined amount of time. Some people rent their places for extra income, some purchase RVs to travel about and stay at some gigs (some require your own RV), and some lighten their loads knowing that it’s all just stuff and can all be replaced anywhere you go and just hit the road with a little cash in hand and a lot less to worry about. This is my personal preference – to lighten my load knowing that it’s all just material things that can easily be replaced – as it allows you to go to more exotic locations as traveling light will get you there much faster. Property owners sometimes frown on you showing up with a U-Haul full of your stuff. Just hitting the road with a little cash in hand and few material possessions is a strategy that has worked well for me over the decades. My position in Alaska wraps up in May and I will be available for a new caretaker position beginning the second week in June. Caretaking properties and estates over the years has provided me with many adventures and a great lifestyle. I am looking forward to finding another great caretaking position through the pages of the Gazette. Thank you, Gary, for letting me be a part of the Gazette family!

[Contact info available to subscribers] VOLUNTEERS needed from September 16 to September 26, 2019. [Contact info available to subscribers] volunteers will have the opportunity to work on the historical island of Videy. Videy or Wood Island is a popular destination during the summer among Icelandic and foreign visitors. Videy is the largest island in the Kollafjorour Bay, just outside Reykjavik. The island is covered by many species of plants and at least 30 species of breeding birds. Videy was inhabited from soon after the settlement of Iceland already in the 10th century and at the beginning of the 20th century around 100 people lived there. Today the island is uninhabited. There is a regular boat connection between the island and the harbor of Reykjavk. The island is only a few hundred meters away from the city and the trip takes just about 10 minutes. This makes Videy so special; it is a peaceful place, very close to the busy city life of the capital. There are hiking and cycling paths around the island and there is no motor traffic allowed. It also inhabits intriguing sculptural artwork, amongst them all nine pairs of basalt pillars that comprise Richard Serras work Afangar and Yoko Onos Imagine Peace column, a tower of light, which is supported by the widow of John Lennon. Volunteers will help prepare the island for the autumn/winter season. Volunteers will beautify the surroundings by cleaning up the area, especially along the coastline, like hand-picking garbage or collecting trash blown by the wind or brought by the sea to the shores and surroundings. [Contact info available to subscribers] volunteers may carry out some gardening activities as well and possibly make and maintain walking paths. Well maintained paths enable people to visit the area without damaging them and this important work also helps to improve safety for visitors. Depending on the advance of the project, volunteers may have other possible tasks such as checking up and repairing garden furniture. The working day normally runs from 09:00 – 17:00 with breaks for lunch and coffee; however, please be prepared for some flexibility due to the nature of Iceland’s changeable weather. Volunteers should have motivation to work outside and work in all kinds of weather as it can get cold. Bring warm under-layers, waterproofs, walking shoes/boots, a good sleeping bag and gloves. As it is outdoors work, volunteers shall be ready to adapt and be flexible with the working and free-time schedule, as depending on the weather, we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or activities planned. Volunteers will be lodged in a local house on Videy Island, in a sleeping bag accommodation sharing rooms. Please bring your own sleeping bag. The house has an equipped kitchen. Volunteers will receive food ingredients and be in charge of cooking and cleaning. To learn more, please visit our website at [Contact info available to subscribers]

An Alternative to Costly Medical Insurance
Over the decades many of our advertisers and subscribers, both property owners and caretakers/house sitters, have discussed their healthcare situation and possible insurance options/alternatives with us. We recently dropped our current medical insurance when the premiums jumped to $2,000 per month with a $12,000 annual deductible. We switched to a $354 per month healthcare program called Medi-Share. I wanted to share some information with you about Medi-Share as I thought you might be interested in their affordable healthcare. Like us, you and your family could join their community of 250,000+ who share in each other’s medical burdens. Since 1993 more than $2 Billion in medical expenses have been shared and discounted by Medi-Share members. With Medi-Share you and your family won’t need to worry about the mandate to purchase health insurance or pay costly penalties and fees, since members are exempt through a special provision in the Affordable Care Act. If you would like to learn more, please go to http://bit.ly/2gvMroU or please call Myles Lilley who is a Member Development Specialist at Christian Care Ministry at 800-772-5623 extension 2224. I hope this helps! Take care, Gary C. Dunn, Publisher THE CARETAKER GAZETTE

Arizona Cowboy has written true stories in four exciting and interesting books all about half a century on horseback. 2005, was the year the books closed on the Arizona, cattle and horse ranch named the DK Ranch. After nearly fifty years there as a cowhand, I had advanced as their chief honcho. During the start of the year 2005, the handwriting on the wall began and the books closed on this historic steer and horse ranch. I sadly, then, became my pen-name, The Last DK Cowboy. Read stories of true happenings during our daily work. Happily chasing steers over the open range while aboard bronco horses we were trying to make into usable cowponies. Join me by enjoying these true tales and later in the other books describing a rewarding, exciting life among wild cattle and wilder cowhands. Ridin out in Arizona’s beautiful, natural scenic wonders. These true tales, although unusual, are just as I recollect them. To all those who have ever dreamed of being a cowboy, here’s your chance to ride along with me as your side-kick and saddle pard. You can view an entertaining introduction with many colored pictures at www.lastdkcowboy.wordpress.com
