Many of the property owners who advertise with the Gazette have asked that we put a photo and brief mention of their ad on our Twitter page but leave out the contact information. We publish the detailed postings including contact info only for our subscribers. Each year we publish 1,000+ rent-free living opportunities. Our subscribers get all the details for each opportunity and then our subscribers respond directly to the property owners who post their opportunities with us.

Volunteers will be working on a project in the beautiful forest of Hallormsstaoaskogur in the far East of Iceland, doing nature and environmental oriented tasks. Hallormsstaoaskogur is the largest wooded area of the country that spreads over 30 hectares of land. The reforestation of the forest has been going on since a law for the protection was passed in 1899. The oldest part of the woodland is accessible with good hiking trails and explanation signs. The area offers a great variety of walking paths, such as to the deepest valley of the country and up to Sandfell where the view is quite magnificent. Small streams run through the land where children and adults can cool down on warm summer days. The East Fjords is a region of a special landscape, dominated by long, narrow fjords and steep mountains and the wild reindeers of Iceland are found here, the herd counts between three and four thousand animals. The main tasks will be to maintain hiking paths, build stairs, make and put up signs. Volunteers will also put up benches and tables in the forest. Other tasks will be to trim branches and beautify groves that are located near hiking paths. Well maintained paths enable people to visit these amazing areas without damaging the area and this important work also helps to improve safety for visitors. Volunteers should be prepared for all kinds of weather. The work is physically demanding and volunteers need to be motivated to work outdoors. The working plan will be flexible and it will depend on the needs of our local host, the advance of the diverse projects in the area surrounding the forest and of course on the weather conditions. CARETAKER NEEDED next year, in 2018. My family is the owner of a historical house in Tuscany. We’ve owned the Villa since 1536 and we will need a caretaker a year from now in March of 2018 at the Villa Di Corliano. The Villa is seven kilometers from Pisa and 10 kilometers from Lucca, inside a nature park reserve in the Tuscan countryside, on an old Roman Road. We are looking for a responsible, reliable person who loves historical houses and is willing to stay in the Villa, carry out some duties in exchange for free lodging while on holiday in the area. The duties include staying in the Villa every night from 8pm until 7am. Mornings and afternoons are completely free and Monday is a full day free. We want the caretaker to stay a minimum of two months. Artists are born that way. I came in as an intuitive child with a real interest in spirituality and visual arts. My Dad came from a musical family and so art and music were a big part of my childhood. Church was the heart of our home and my Dad often sang solos in the choir. Born in Chicago, by the time I married, I had visited 39 states. Once our children were able to travel we cruised on the QE2 to England and back to New York City. Another time we went to Spain. All told, I’ve visited six foreign countries and travelled to France five times because my youngest daughter and her husband and son live in Paris. Travel is my passion. Painting is my world. Art is my vehicle. I painted murals for “House Beautiful” and worked for movie stars while raising a family. I also do portraits and wedding paintings. At one point, I managed a rooming house and interviewed the guests, took care of their requests and collected the rent for the absentee landlord. In turn, I got free rent and lots of experience dealing with human nature and quirks of personality. I have been a subscriber to The Caretaker Gazette for a long time, and have run Situations Wanted ads there to find house sitting positions. My ads typically included: house sitter available now! The property owner owns the mountain where I live as well as 26 acres in town. The owner is famous and highly private. I am not permitted to have guests or to photograph the property. It is strictly forbidden. The owner travels several months a year. I have my own house to myself. It is one of twelve houses on the mountain property I manage, which is densely wooded and studded with streams and lyrically beautiful. I watch the owner’s cat and three dogs. The dogs are older now and require help getting on and off the couch and in and out of the car. I make sure to bring them to their appointments in town for nail clipping and grooming. The nearest town is 52 miles round trip by car. I feed them and walk them and keep them content and thriving. I also manage the workmen on the property. The grounds require maintenance. We have storms here and fallen branches block the driveways. This is a safety hazard. The grass is cut several times a month and plants require pruning, etc. I coordinate the schedules of the service providers. Many times I drive twenty miles just to meet them so the new ones can follow me and gain entrance to this multi-gated property. It is a bit complicated and somewhat intimidating! I also take in the mail. That is not as simple as it sounds. Gathering the mail means stopping at two post office boxes and two roadside mail boxes and sorting the mail by category. Any important mail needs to be forwarded abroad immediately. The owner and I text each other every Sunday. In turn, I live rent-free and pay nothing for utilities. Living rent-free affords me the much needed time to work on illustrating three card decks. It is an enormous task which I thoroughly enjoy. Art requires peace and solitude. I have a fairly isolated existence these days and find my work is productive and the quality is high. I do not have distractions. I do not have to worry about paying next month’s rent. I do not have to deal with personalities and pressures. I worked as a Special Ed Teacher for nine years in New York City and at the end of the day my energy was spent and I was fairly unproductive as a freelance artist. The rent was several thousand a month and my salary was high but it was a pressure filled existence. I am much more relaxed now and enjoy excellent health and my dreams are inspirational! So the life of a caretaker is similar to the life of an Artist in Residence and for this I am very grateful. I speak French adequately and hope for a position in France and the closer to Paris, the better. If that is not in the cards, LOL, then I am willing to work as a house sitter or caretaker in North Carolina again or even northern California or New York where I also have friends and family. I just want to be able to continue painting. My needs are few. I am outgoing and stay in touch with my friends over the computer and phone. I also use FaceTime which I thoroughly enjoy. The job requirements will include, but are not limited to: maintenance and repairs of buildings including some carpentry work, operation and maintenance of a log splitter and chain saw, use of a mini pickup utility truck pulling and cutting weeds, repairing corrals and wire fences as needed, familiarity with electricity and willingness to learn about a solar powered electrical system, maintenance and repairs to the gravity fed water system, filters and pipes, responsible for horse care and feeding when horses are on the property, ability to help with pack trips from the neighboring guest ranch – including setting up tents, clean up and cooking assistance when needed, familiarity with handheld radio systems, and housekeeping for buildings on site. The person selected for this job must be a self-starter, independent with a great deal of integrity and able to work with minimal oversight, as the owners will only be there part-time and the individual hired will be at the ranch alone much of the time.
