Letters to the Editor

Hello Caretaker Gazette, I just wanted to let you know that I was able to find my last three homes through your great publication. I say homes because that is what the places I cared for became to me. I found I quickly adapted and was accepted in the communities. So enclosed is my renewal for another three years. I hope to find another great gig and another home! Thank you. Charles S., Hemet, CA

Thanks for your nice message, Charles. It’s not uncommon for our subscribers who are house sitting and caretaking to become part of the local communities. We appreciate your renewal and hope you find another place that you can call home.

Hi Gary, well after weeks of interviews, background checks, calling references and going back and forth about the job requirements I have hired a woman who I think will be a great fit for my rural property. She is single, will come here with her dog and loves quiet time for her writing and art. I will keep you updated but this looks like it will be a great fit! Thanks again, Diane M., Portland, OR

Hi Diane, thank you for letting us know that your Gazette help-wanted ad resulted in what sounds like the perfect caretaker for your property. Please keep in touch and let us know how things go for you and your new caretaker.

Hi Gazette folks, I really love the addition of your Twitter feed on your home page! It’s great to see the beautiful photos and they give me a little nudge toward making a change to this lifestyle. I will probably run a Situations Wanted ad to advertise my availability later this year. Thank you to all of you there! Teri I., Madison, WI

Hi Teri, I appreciate your sharing your thoughts on our Twitter feed. We’ve received good feedback on it from both property owners and prospective caretakers. When you’re ready to run your Situations-Wanted ad, please let us know if you need any help putting it together. We have thousands of property owners who subscribe to the Gazette because they are looking to hire people available – and it only takes one good property offer to make it worthwhile.

Thanks to you and your Gazette, I have secured another excellent job in a quality location on a superb property. Although I will miss the East Coast as I am headed west to the mountains. I am going to keep my subscription current in the event things change or another listing comes up in this area. Thanks again, Gary, for continuing to give all of us dedicated caretakers so many years of options and listings and connections necessary to pursue these quality jobs in great locations. Larry D., New Brunswick, NJ

Congratulations on the new position, Larry! It sounds like the position out west will give you some great experiences that you can eventually use to help you find a future position back on the East Coast. Thanks for your kind words about the Gazette and our dedication to the property caretaking field.

Hi Gary, to date my wife and I have received close to two dozen inquiries to our help-wanted ad that ran in the Gazette. A number of them look very good. As you know we have always had a hard time finding the right people to live up there and you have just solved that problem for us. I will be sure to respond to each email to let people know what we are doing. Thanks, Steve B., Santa Barbara, CA

Steve, thanks for taking the time to share your experience with us. You have a beautiful and unique, if somewhat isolated property, but many of our Gazette subscribers are looking for just such a place. I’m not surprised to learn that your ad brought you such a good response. We have some excellent subscribers – very qualified people who will bring their experiences to help you and who would enjoy living on your beautiful property. I appreciate your taking the time to respond to all of the applicants.

CARETAKER WANTED for a Mountain Ranch in Pollock Pines. I have a two bedroom/one bathroom mobile home trailer available (the trailer appliances run on propane) in exchange for help around the ranch and building tiny houses on trailers. Also possible is a live-in situation in my house for the right person. I have been inundated with replies so when responding please describe what abilities you have and work experience. I am leaning toward retired people or somebody who would be around a lot but will consider anybody who brings a lot to the table so to speak. Room for horses over three acres already fenced for the caretaker. There is also a very rustic cabin and plenty of trailer space available. Looking for somebody with experience with horses or people with carpentry/handyman skills and business management. A MacGyver type of person would be a plus. Must be a self-starter and it would be great if you have a lot of your own tools. A great deal of common sense is essential for living on a ranch and I can’t stress that enough. There are two trout streams on the property and plenty of places to garden. Unfortunately there is no 420 growing here. An apple orchard over one hundred sixty years old is still bearing sixteen different varieties of apples. There are also raspberries, gooseberries and loganberries to be harvested. I need help restoring the house that has half fallen down, as it was built in 1869. The ranch is semi remote, located five miles to the closest neighbor, but only fifteen minutes on good roads to Pollock Pines with major shopping stores and schools. There is excellent cell phone reception. The ranch is in generator country which means you need to provide your own generator as there is no electricity! We get quite a bit of snow in the winter so a 4-wheel-drive is advisable. There are possible job opportunities with the right people but nothing going on at the present moment. I need motivated people who want to help get the business going again and expand to build tiny houses on trailers. I have enough lumber cut and dried to build 10. This is an l64 acre timber property. I have sawmill, kiln and woodworking tools. Would like to find somebody interested in helping expand my lumber, cabinets and furniture sales. Also interested in turning the ranch into an equestrian campground and give guided horseback riding on the property and the adjacent thousands of acres of US forest land. I do have other caretakers so everything is not dependent upon just one caretaker. No drug or alcohol abusers please. There is a background check required. Please reply with your phone number to [Contact info available to subscribers].

[Contact info available to subscribers] VOLUNTEERS needed from September 12 through September 22, 2016. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work on the historic island of Videy for the 10th year in a row with our host, the city of Reykjavรญk. Videy or “Wood Island” is the largest (1,7 square km) island in the Kollafjorour Bay, just outside Reykjavรญk, the capital of Iceland. The island is covered by many species of plants and at least 30 species of breeding birds have been counted here. Videy was inhabited from soon after the settlement of Iceland in the 10th century and at the beginning of the 20th century around 100 people lived there. Today the island is uninhabited. There is a regular boat connection between the island and the harbor of Reykjavรญk. The island is only a few hundred meters away from the city and the trip takes just about 10 minutes. This makes Videy so special; it is a peaceful place, very close to the busy city life of the capital. There are hiking and cycling paths around the island and there is no motor traffic allowed. It also inhabits intriguing sculptural art work, amongst them all nine pairs of basalt pillars that comprise Richard’s Serra’s work Afangar and Yoko Ono’s “Imagine peace” column, a tower of light, which is supported by the widow of John Lennon. Other places of interest on Videy are related to archaeological research, the village. At the eastern end of the island is the site of an abandoned fishing village and Vioeyjarnaust, at the southwest of the island, is a memorial to the twenty men who lost their lives when the cutter Ingvar sank off Videy in 1906. Dramatic formations of columnar basalt may be seen on the shore. The project offers diverse tasks and various experiences for [Contact info available to subscribers] volunteers. Volunteers will work on environmental and nature related assignments, such as possibly harvesting vegetables and crops grown on the island. Volunteers will also help with cleaning up in the area, especially along the coastline. Tools and furniture will need to be stored inside, and the common recreational areas need to be prepared for the autumn/winter season. There will also be a bit of constructional work since some fences need maintenance and volunteers will do some paint jobs as well. The weather conditions in Iceland are unpredictable so be prepared to experience all kinds of weather and be sure of bringing warm clothing as it can be cold, windy and rainy. Volunteers should have motivation to work outside and work in all different kinds of weather. Volunteers will be lodged in a local house at Videy Island, in a sleeping bag accommodation sharing rooms. Please bring your own sleeping bag. The house has a well equipped kitchen. Volunteers will receive food supplies and be in charge of the cooking and cleaning activities. To learn more, please visit [Contact info available to subscribers].

Mike and Mary

It’s been over two years since The Caretaker Gazette published our Caretaker Profile and so much has happened that we wanted to post an update. As I sit here, once again back in Vermont, my view from the window in front of me is a lovely lake, loaded with rainbow trout, two Canadian Geese (with their four, newly hatched chicks) and shoreline trees which are just opening their leaves to the springtime sun. I told my husband, Mike, we ought to have a bumper sticker reading, “Paid to live in paradise” on our truck. Until five years ago, we didn’t even know the caretaking lifestyle existed. I was happily teaching at a small, non-profit school and Mike drove a school bus and did handyman work on the side. We had completely renovated our home and were comfortable and happy when fortune came knocking on our door in the form of an article in a magazine. I am always amazed, when looking back on my life, the way things can be going along a planned route when an innocuous comment, or in this case, an article in a magazine, can change that course and open one’s eyes to the possibilities which surround us. We were happy in our jobs, but both wanted be able to travel more and have new challenges in our lives. This article really spoke to us. The article was about people who did caretaking for a living. It mentioned The Caretaker Gazette as a resource for connecting property owners with responsible, reliable people. Two months after subscribing to the Gazette, I asked Mike what he thought about doing this full-time – and he replied with seven words that changed our lives: “If the house sells, let’s do it.” The house sold! Except for our dog, Maisy, and some basics, we were footloose and ready to go. I know this lifestyle isn’t for everyone, but for us it is perfect. We don’t need an RV because the properties we take care of supply housing. On our first caretaking assignment in Indiana, we learned to care for horses, beefalo, sheep and assorted barnyard animals on a 175 acre property which ran a summer camp in June and July. We also planned, planted and cared for a large organic garden on the property. The time we spent in Indiana was very special to us. We really felt part of the community and we learned so many useful skills which we continue to put to good use. In the end though, new experiences called, ones in colder climates. One of the great things about caretaking is that there are so many choices for the locations, responsibilities, and kinds of jobs available. This is no “one size fits all” kind of life. One thing we have noticed is, that wherever we go, people ask us about our lifestyle and how the process works. We always tell them to go to www.caretaker.org to get an idea of how The Caretaker Gazette is set up, and to take out a subscription if they want to go further. Mike and I have also found the Gazette emails of current openings to be very helpful. In addition to the emails, we have had success when placing our own Situations-Wanted ads. The important thing to remember when placing an ad is to be very clear on what you are looking for. If location is important, be sure to specify where you want to work (i.e. we prefer colder climates.) Also, mention if you require housing, compensation, or are just looking to housesit. You can discuss the details when you talk on the phone or by email, but you will save time, both for you and the property owner, by being clear on matters which are important to you. Be sure to list skills you have, and always get a letter of recommendation when the caretaking job is finished. From Indiana, we spent two summers managing a small, rustic cabin resort located on the edge of a wilderness area in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, worked at a summer family camp in Vermont, and were winter caretakers for a West Virginia property. Our responsibilities left us plenty of time for kayaking, hiking, sailing, and archery as well as for many trips exploring different regions on our days off. We are truly blessed to be on this journey of discovery together where we keep meeting such interesting people and traveling to new and exciting places. Our only regret is that we didn’t do this years ago, and even that’s a small regret because our lives are so full right now. Our goal is always, no matter the placement, to make a difference, wherever we are. Yes, we are still living the caretaker lifestyle. Since we were last here in New England, we have been managing a mansion in Pennsylvania (built in 1829) which is run as an events center and as a hostel on the Appalachian Trail. We gained a lot of experience and worked with some fantastic people. Because of our time there, we have both gotten into hiking and have added that to our favorite outdoor activities. With all our successes in caretaking, there is still one area we want to improve on. We find there are many, many wonderful summer opportunities, and a number of permanent placements, but for us, we would like to find winter opportunities. Maybe homeowners who like to go South in the winter need dependable people to watch their property? We would love to hear from other caretakers with any suggestions they may have.

After three years, our current caretaker couple will be leaving on July 1st to start their own farm, thus we are looking for two adults who are responsible, conscientious, trustworthy, energetic and who meet our requirements, to take their place, to live on-site, full-time, in a picturesque, rustic, quiet, small cabin that is on a 100-acre beautiful property with a 230-year-old historic farmhouse, barns, and other outbuildings, in Windham County, VT. The cabin is across a quiet dirt road from our home and is offered in exchange for weekly chores which will include daily animal care (currently sheep, chickens), vegetable/flower gardening, light construction, pasture management, painting, land clearing, property oversight and snow removal. The caretakers must be competent at animal care, climbing ladders, cutting firewood, gardening, and keeping the property well-tended. We are not a B&B but we keep the place looking like one. Experience with gardening, farm animal care, tractor operation/upkeep, property maintenance, chain saw/power tools is required. Being trustworthy, responsible, neat and considerate is mandatory. A telephone interview will be held with qualified applicants to further determine the best fit for all before meeting and showing the property. A start date around July 1st, earlier accommodation is possible. Please read the requirements carefully and do not respond if you do not meet our requirements. I am offering for rent a spectacular restaurant located in a historic, well established Inn called [Contact info available to subscribers]. I am looking for an enterprising restaurateur to run this restaurant as an independent business (from the Inn). The rent is negotiable and includes the use of two dining rooms, one attractive porch dining area and a fully equipped, completely rebuilt, commercial kitchen. The Inn, called [Contact info available to subscribers], opened on the 6th of August 2014 and features twenty two rooms, which provide a “built in” customer base for the restaurant. The existing restaurant (though closed at the present), Restaurant 1850, rose to the number one (out of 67) restaurants on Trip Advisor in less than three months! All our current Inn guests are inquiring “when will the restaurant reopen?” The person who rents this restaurant could possibly also provide a breakfast service for the Inn. [Contact info available to subscribers] is located just off of I-81 on Highway 11, five miles north of Lexington, Virginia, a small, historic, college town located at the southern end of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. The area is steeped in history and is one of the Virginia’s most popular tourist attractions.
