Hey Gary, just wanted to let you know that I was hired as the caretaker for an 80-acre farm just north of Maple Falls, Washington. The job came across on one of your regular email updates back in January and was a perfect fit for me and the lifestyle I enjoy. I responded to it, was contacted by the owners, flew out and interviewed on February 11th, was selected among many other applicants and accepted the job on March 5th. I officially retired from 31+ years of federal service today, and will leave for Maple Falls next Thursday to begin my new job and….my new life. I want to thank you for your Gazette, for your personal touch to it and particularly for the phone call I received from you the day I subscribed. Many of my family, friends and coworkers found it hard to believe that there is such a Gazette, and even more difficult to believe that I received a call from you the day I subscribed. Hi Gary, can you write something in your next issue about employers not responding and/or at least confirming that they have received your interest letter and resume. I spend a lot of time putting in a thoughtful letter of interest and time doing research on these positions and feel that the least people can do is simply respond that they received your email and/or that the position has been filled. I realize the volume of emails received may be high, but a simple standard reply would be appreciated. S. C. Denver, CO

Hi Shannon, we have sometimes heard this from other subscribers. When we accept ads for publication in the Gazette, we stress to every advertiser to please have the courtesy to respond to everyone who answers their ad – even if the position has been filled. In the case of the Situations Wanted ads, even if the person has found a position already we encourage them to tell those who offer them a position that they have already accepted another position. Despite this, there are still advertisers who do not respond. Unfortunately, we have no control beyond this, but we will still continue to ask all advertisers to respond to people answering their Gazette ad.

Hi Gary, it is always a thrill to open a major magazine and see mention of The Caretaker Gazette as I did this week in U.S. News and World Report. You have really put our industry on the map! After 26 years of running Heartland Caregivers Inc. (AKA Estate Staffing by Heartland) I am officially retired! Costa Rica

It all started in March of 2009, with a very strong inner prompting to move to western North Carolina. I was happily caretaking a beautiful log home at 9,000′ outside of Woodland Park, CO in the Rocky Mountains behind Pikes Peak, and had been for the last 10 years. There was no logical reason for me to move, and certainly not an economic one. But the prompting became more urgent, and being a highly intuitive person, I decided to explore what that could be about. I have experienced this kind of “prompting” before, and being a curious and adventurous person, I paid attention and found myself having fascinating life experiences all over the world…from being a TWA flight attendant in the early 80’s, to producing television commercials in Nashville, to being a travel agent in Napa Valley, to being an executive chef in Hong Kong, to studying Transformative therapies in Australia, to writing poetry in sacred sites in the Celtic ruins of Great Britain… so taking a leap of faith wasn’t a totally foreign idea to me. I feel that there’s always a good reason to listen to my inner promptings, so in April of 2009, I decided to find out about this calling to western North Carolina. A friend recommended signing up with The Caretaker Gazette, which I did, and I Googled “Smoky Mountains” and found a beautiful scene of a sunrise in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. (See picture above) I made this photo the screensaver background on my computer, and looked at it every day, visualizing myself being in these beautiful surroundings and imagining what it might be like to have a little cabin in the woods somewhere in the Smokies. I checked all The Caretaker Gazette updates and newsletters over the next few months, and there were a few short-term caretaking jobs, but nothing significant until October of 2009. In an update, the PERFECT situation showed up…a pet sitting, caretaking job in Bryson City, NC, at the Lakeview at Fontana Resort and Spa. It was a four month assignment, while the resort was closed for the season, starting in mid-November. After contacting the owners, and waiting for the many applicants to be considered, I was chosen to be the caretaker, and 10 days later I was on my way to North Carolina! I arrived at Lakeview at Fontana, and was met by Tom Cassidy, who owns and co-manages the resort with Tetia McMichael, and he showed me to my beautiful three bedroom suite, overlooking Lake Fontana, and I met their two wonderful dogs, and cat, who would be my charges for the next four months. As I was unpacking in my new quarters, I looked out my bedroom window and my jaw dropped… my view was EXACTLY what I had been seeing every day on my screensaver for the last seven months! That random photograph that I had Googled of the Smoky Mountains had actually been taken from very near to the spot where I was now standing! Talk about dreams actually manifesting, I was now IN the picture I’d been using to visualize coming to North Carolina! The picture below is of me, standing in front of the lake view from my screensaver…it’s winter and the lake level is down, but it’s exactly the same spot! My caretaking/pet-sitting experience was wonderful at Lakeview at Fontana, and it provided a rent-free accommodation in exchange for my loving care of the owner’s pets…definitely a win-win situation for all of us! Having a four month assignment afforded me plenty of time to explore western North Carolina and meet many new friends there. Lakeview at Fontana opened in April and was featured in Southern Living Magazine’s May 2010 issue, so I left them with many hugs and happy memories and some very loved and spoiled (by me) pets! I am now living in a cute little farmhouse in the country between Waynesville and Asheville, NC…sharing the property with some wonderful landlords, 50 goats, two horses, four dogs and a cat! I am dreaming up my next career move, which will probably involve intuitive counseling and life-coaching near Asheville, NC! I have found my true home. I am so grateful that a service like The Caretaker Gazette exists! I’m still amazed by the synchronicity of finding the perfect caretaking situation for me.
