[Contact info available to subscribers] needs help this summer. We are a 30 acre shellfish farm located across Kachemak Bay from Homer, Alaska. Kachemak Bay is a 40 mile long arm of Cook Inlet, located on the southwest side of the Kenai Peninsula. It is home to Alaska’s only state wilderness park, Kachemak Bay State Park. I grow mostly Pacific oysters but I also grow mussels, scallops and clams by the suspended culture methods (not on bottom or on the beach). Although there is not currently an organic certification for shellfish, I can guarantee that the shellfish from this farm are as clean and wholesome as any seafood from anywhere in the world. Life is on the water on skiffs or on the docks. Some tasks are done on the beach. They involve cleaning, sorting, and counting oysters. The suggested length of stay is negotiable, but a seven day trial period would be wise to determine compatibility. Five to six hours would be a good day in exchange. Accommodations will be on my 42 foot fishing vessel, or on a 36-foot landing craft, in docks, in tents or in the woods at a tent camp. Children and pets are negotiable. The farm is seven miles across the water from Homer, or seven miles from Seldovia by road. I supply transportation to the farm. English is the primary language (with a very little Spanish and French). Diet is negotiable. All the shellfish and fish that anyone could eat are available. The food is wild and prepared by me. Hi Gary, just wanted to update you on my new Wyoming address. I just started this new job mainly doing office things at this lovely ranch. I got the job because I put an ad in the Gazette’s Situations-Wanted section last fall and one of the responses was from the director of this ranch. I interviewed with her in December when I came out here for Christmas with my oldest son and family. That’s great news Jo Allison! We have over 3,000 property owners who subscribe to the Gazette in order to find people available. Many real estate investors from across the country who are stuck with empty homes that they can’t sell are using the Gazette to read our Situations-Wanted section and then contacting the prospective house sitters and caretakers to make them a property caretaking or house sitting offer. This way their empty homes are occupied again so theft and vandalism problems are avoided.

Colorado

house sitter NEEDED in southeastern Colorado from August 21 until September 1. This is not a paid position. I need a couple or single person (non-smokers) to care for my property and animals. There are easy chores here: feed and water in the morning (about 40 minutes) and then again in the evening (15 minutes). All the plants are on drip-lines so the watering is turning hydrants on or off through the day. The longest “chore” will be walking the puppies that I adopted. Accommodation will be the master bedroom, with attached bathroom. The house has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, den, lounge, kitchen with an attached dining room. Clean and tidy. My home has TV, DVD, video, wireless internet, sewing machine, and fax. The property is in town and has seven acres. Use of a car and a small catamaran are possible. We are located at an elevation of 8,000 ft in the gorgeous Wahatoya Mountains and the Sangre de Cristo range in southeastern Colorado. We are looking to exchange homesteading chores for an 800 square-foot cabin on 76 acres in “Sunny Kapoho” (average of 75 inches of rain, mostly in the early morning hours) on the Big Island. We would prefer a health and ecologically focused couple who are drug free, responsible, energetic, fit, stable couple (age 20 – 40’s) and looking for a long-term living arrangement (six months to one year minimum but ideally desire lifetime commitment) for an off grid (solar and wind) educational living project, that supports fair, responsible, sustainable, and healthy living on a beach front, sustainable homestead/land trust. We would also consider recurrent seasonal stays for part of the year and occasionally we may be open to single people and short term (three – five months) stays. The cabin is set back about 300 feet from the ocean, and is about 50 feet above sea level. The 20×40 foot cabin has an outside shower, chest refrigerator, propane oven, and the bathroom consists of a composting bucket, which is under a conventional toilet seat. The cabin is single wall cedar construction, and three of the walls are mostly window, which allow in a lot of natural light and allow for enjoyment of the panoramic views of the ocean, jungle. The work exchange entails watering the organic gardens, feeding the chickens and collecting the eggs, feeding and milking the goats, taking the buck out to be tethered and fed, taking the does out to pasture and/or cutting greens, garden/structure maintenance, and feeding the cats and dog. Most of the physical labor involves using loppers or a bow saw to cut greens for the goats and hauling them to the manger via wheelbarrow. VOLUNTEERS needed for a unique opportunity to work at the largest National Park in Europe, the Vatnajökull National Park, and in the community of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Half of the time will be spent in the National Park and half of the time working in the vicinity of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, in the south of Iceland. The main tasks of volunteers will be trail management and conservation work in the hiking areas, including trail maintenance work and path marking. Volunteers will work together with the leaders and trail teams of Umhverfisstofnun. Work will be physically demanding and may involve long hikes to reach the working sites. Well maintained paths enable people to visit these amazing areas without damaging them and this important work also helps to improve safety for visitors. My subscription to The Caretaker Gazette had helped me to dream about far off places. In the stress abundant environment of Construction Management for over twenty-five years, I could escape – in reading over the pages of the Gazette. I always knew this seemed like a wonderful method to see some of the world and was finally given the opportunity one cold, Canadian wintery day. I had just received one of the Gazette’s email updates, and I decided to email the advertiser about the possibility of house sitting in Costa Rica with my qualifications along with an introduction of myself. We communicated briefly via email messages and it appeared with my experience, I was now the prime candidate. I was both thrilled and concerned… since finally, another of my life goals could soon become a reality. Upon giving me a few days to investigate and to speak with the current house sitters (who were from Canada as well) I decided to commit and purchased my airline ticket to San Jose, Costa Rica. From San Jose – I would take a bus for nearly four hours to the Eastern coast of Costa Rica on the Caribbean Ocean and eventually meet my new friend, the Owner of this lovely Casa overlooking the Ocean. Upon arriving, with my Spanish, English phrase book in hand… and with the assistance of a wonderful senior citizen from New York who was also on that bus, I finally met my new friend D. We left the hustle of the bus/taxi/tourist/guest arrivals and made our way through the now complete darkness to the site of my new adventure for a few months to come. D made me some food, we enjoyed a few words and I was shown my bedroom and retired for my first night in Costa Rica, weary from the full day of traveling. I could not believe my eyes when I awoke. I heard the sound of the Caribbean Ocean crashing into the shoreline all night long and could lie in bed and actually watch the surf among the mesmerizing dance of the palms outlining the cliff overlooking this surreal view. D introduced me to the two resident dogs, Cannella and her son, Blanco. Both had arrived one day, got a free meal, and then decided to stay. After some breakfast I was given a tour of the property and we went into town to pick up some groceries. All of the magnificent scenery, the tropical heat, and the cooling ocean breezes were causing a sensory overload. I knew I was in for some adventure here and found out later that afternoonhow it would commence. Being in a foreign country and maintaining a luxurious residence such as this is wonderful, although it has its own myriad of responsibilities which comes with taking care of such a place on your own. On the first afternoon in this place D asked me to put on some long pants… and shoes…and join him. Join him where, I wondered? I soon found out we were about to trek down the mountainside to clear brush and palm branches away from the power lines with a machete and a pool pole! Less than 24 hours here and I am in the thick of the jungle slipping and sliding down a very steep hillside with a machete in hand and an aluminum pool-cleaning pole to lift branches out of the way as we chopped off any offenders. I was now muddy, a bit scratched, a little bitten by bugs and really happy that this was finally over – a few hours after we started. I learned to knock down coconuts, cut the top off and drink the sweet coco-water in my first afternoon here! In the middle of a very dense tropical jungle, on a very hot afternoon, surrounded by all sorts of trees, plants and living things – I had never been this close to before, sweating and working alongside the Owner, working to complete our task. I must say… I was exhilarated by the experience. After a few more days with the Owner, he explained what he wished to be routinely checked on and I learned the various methods from him personally. He seemed at ease with my taking responsibility over his Casa and left to return back to Europe. We communicate every few days via email and I’m getting used to the Ocean surf sound lulling me to sleep each night in this paradise. I’ve developed a routine of breakfast, exercise, completing a few chores around the Casa, reviewing the property perimeter, tending to some seedlings I planted (to allow the Owner some fresh vegetables growing on the property – eventually) then reading, photographing the local shoreline and wandering into town to observe the local folks and photograph the architecture. I will also do some traveling to near beach communities and explore more of this amazing country of Costa Rica. I usually rise around seven a.m., shower in cold water (no hot water in this casa), lounge around a little, check email and respond. Wander downstairs, make a cup of coffee, back upstairs for an hour communicating to friends on laptop, then downstairs, some breakfast, a workout in the pool, decide on the day at hand… into town for fresh groceries, minor repairs around the house or simply read and enjoy the scenery and surf. Occasionally, I plan a trip into town and then a bus trip to another neighboring City down the Caribbean coast for the day, returning in the evening to this little piece of paradise. Make dinner, have a drink and watch the stars, update my diary from the day’s event, then go to bed. What a life!
