Hi Gary, maybe you remember me… I got my dream job two years ago through the Gazette running a small Inn on the North Oregon Coast. Anyway, just a small tidbit that I thought you might get a kick out of, I sure did! There was an ad in one of your emails a few days ago for a house and dog sitter in Frankfurt, Germany. Since I was born and raised there, I thought this might be a great way to vacation there and see all my friends from time to time, so I answered it. Guess where the man lives? LaDonna Carnahan has lived all of her 58 years, in Louisville, Kentucky. Now that she is retired after working 34 years at General Electric’s Appliance Park, she is ready to pack a suitcase and travel whenever given the opportunity. While her family and almost everyone she knows and loves reside in Louisville or in Kentucky, she has a longing to wander and see new places whenever she can. She has one adult son, Jason, who also owns a home in Louisville. “We haven’t traveled very far from where we grew up. I wouldn’t want to leave Louisville permanently, but just leave here long enough for it to be nice to come back home. Now is my time to explore, I call it my time to make rocking chair memories.” Born into a Catholic family on the southwest side of Louisville, she attended parochial schools and led a somewhat sheltered life. Her first job interview was for a secretarial job at GE’s Appliance Park on the outskirts of Louisville. In 1968 there was record growth at this major appliance manufacturing plant, and before that day was over, she accepted one of three jobs she interviewed for that day. “I was 18 and I still remember thinking that I’ll work here a year or two then get a job in downtown Louisville. Working downtown seemed exciting to me then.” Well 34 years later and what seemed like many lifetimes of personal changes, she was offered a chance to take early retirement, and has not looked back. About eight months before she retired her sister, Tricia, was building a home in Bagdad, KY and needed a temporary home for her two cats, Rastus and Turnip. “That is what started the pet sitting ball rolling. Every day I would come into work and have stories of the fun antics of the cats. It wasn’t very long before my co-workers started asking me to watch their pets and referring me to their family and friends.” The first day of her “retirement” she started a month long home/pet-sitting job for a single executive who was traveling to China. “This lady was relatively new to the area and didn’t have a backup support system in place yet. I’m still working for her and we’ve become friends through the years.” Soon word was out to other GE Folks that she was doing this type of work and they all kept her in mind as their co-workers, families and friends would mention their pet sitting needs. “It has been very rewarding. I enjoy pet-sitting and don’t plan on stopping any time soon. However, sometimes I wish I didn’t have to go out late across town for the last, late night ‘out the door before bedtime’ trip, when I’m doing jobs where I don’t stay in the home.” Some of her most interesting and demanding pet-sitting jobs have been for people with multiple animals (13 cats indoors, in an immaculate home in Jeffersonville) and a job working for a very special couple who have spent years taking in discarded and afflicted or maimed dogs and cats. “Most recently I worked for a couple in San Antonio Texas. This was my first Caretaker Gazette job out of state. Lily and James are both doctors and they placed their first ad in the Gazette, for a pet-sitter. They were planning a month long trip of a lifetime: a bird watching trip to Africa. At that time, one of their two older dogs was getting a five minute drip every other day and they were looking for someone accustomed to medicating pets. I immediately applied and forwarded them a bevy of local references. I had experience with administering insulin shots: one to a poodle of a friend of mine and the other to a diabetic cat. I was also willing to care for someone’s pet that might be close to the end of its journey on earth.” The rest is history. LaDonna spent a wonderful November in San Antonio in Lily and James’ charming Victorian home. It is located in the historic Olmos Park neighborhood, one of San Antonio’s older and nicer areas located near downtown San Antonio. It was a perfect match! She had a wonderful experience living in their home and they traveled relieved that someone capable and responsible was caring for their pets and home.
