Letters to the Editor
Hey Gary, I just heard this story on my NPR radio station, and thought you would like to know about the good deed that caretaker, Geoffrey Holt, did for his town in New Hampshire: “Geoffrey Holt, the caretaker of a mobile home park in Hinsdale, NH, led a modest life. According to the Associated Press, he didn’t own a car or a television or have much furniture in the mobile home where he lived. But what he did have was millions of dollars. It turns out, he was a shrewd investor. He died last June, but Hinsdale officials have learned that he left his entire estate – $3.8 million – to the town. Caretaker, indeed.” Take care, Jill C., Garden City, KS
WOW Jill, thanks for sharing this story with us. What a beautiful thing this caretaker did for his town! I hope Hinsdale, New Hampshire spends Mr. Holt’s $3,800,000.00 wisely.
Gary, the ad we ran in The Caretaker Gazette in the November issue attracted over 30 applicants from all over the country. It was a bit overwhelming, with the high quality of applicants making the choice a difficult one. Thanks to your publication we were able to find just the person we wanted. Thanks, Mike H., Little Switzerland, NC
Glad to read another success story with The Caretaker Gazette, Mike! Please spread the good word about The Caretaker Gazette. Thanks Mike.
Dear Gary: Just a thought – I have talked with other subscribers and some of us have faced the same frustrating dilemma. We send resumes, photos, and other information, and even a self-addressed stamped envelope (S.A.S.E) in some cases to some potential employers who advertise in the Gazette and never hear a word back. No notice that our information was received; no word that the caretaking position has been filled or they’re simply not interested in us, etc. Is there some way your publication can encourage people placing ads to send some sort of response to applicants? I know this is hard. It just seems there is no courtesy anymore. They won’t even reply to my email message saying their position has been filled, or they’re not interested! Just something to think about. Thanks, Keith C., Lake Geneva, WI
Keith, we always ask our advertisers to have the common courtesy to reply to all applicants, even after they fill their position. We’ve printed notices about it in the Gazette and will continue to request that all advertisers kindly respond to all applicants, and hope they comply! Many of our advertisers do respond to applicants, even if it’s just an email message indicating that they have filled their position.
We have moved and accepted a caretaking position we saw advertised in the Gazette. Thank you. We are very busy in our new position right now. We are caretakers at a camp that is in full swing for the summer. We know the Berkshires will be a great place to spend the summer. Our best to you and keep those Gazettes coming. We love the opportunities that you are providing us with in the Gazette and plan on using it for many years to come. Nancy M., Great Barrington, MA
Thanks for your kind words, Nancy. I’m glad your new caretaking assignment is offering you a nice summer there! Please keep in touch and let us know what location you will be in for your next caretaker position.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for a privately owned dog shelter (with a small cat area too). We are For the Strays – Paws of Greece and are located in the area of Trifilia, Peloponnesos. We have about 90 dogs that need to be taken care of on a daily basis. We have someone who lives on the premises. He is older and has a walking disability, so his son takes care of the dogs every day. But we have no one to help him out. He has been working every day for the last five years, seven days a week. He cannot keep this up. We need someone who lives in the Trifilia area (or not?), who can come in once a week and do his job. To feed, water, provide medicine, look at the overall health of the dogs and of course clean and scoop the poop. This will be a paid job. We can’t pay a lot, as we are a non-profit organization that exists only through donations, but we will work something out, I am sure. So, are you a big dog lover who wants to help our guy out to have a weekly day off? If so, please contact us. We are also looking for volunteers who can come help out in our shelter on a somewhat regular basis. Maybe once a week, or once or twice a month? What needs to be done? Small repair jobs that lay around waiting, cleaning, or grooming the dogs, just walking some of the dogs (one at a time of course), just giving love and attention to the dogs who love to cuddle, but there is never time. This is a volunteer job, not paid. So, we are looking for people who have a big (dog) heart and want to be a part of a team. We are also looking for builders. This is a paid job. We need to have a corridor built (made of poles and fencing etc.). We also need a new quarantine kennel for new dogs that arrive at the shelter. It consists of poles, fencing, cement flooring and a roof over it. And we need a roof built over the caretaker’s caravan. To protect it from the heat and the rain and cold weather. Of course, this needs to be someone who is comfortable enough to work around dogs. Are you the builder we are looking for? Do you need a job? If so, please email [Contact info available to subscribers]

[Contact info available to subscribers] VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED from May 9 to May 18, 2024. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work on the historical island of Vioey for the 17th year in a row with our host, the city of Reykjavรญk. Vioey or “Wood Island” is the largest island in the Kollafjorour Bay, just outside Reykjavรญk. The island is covered by many species of plants and at least 30 species of breeding birds have been counted here. Vioey was inhabited soon after the settlement of Iceland in the 10th century. In the beginning of the 20th century, around 100 people lived there. Today the island is uninhabited. Vioey is a popular destination during the summer among Icelandic and foreign visitors. Volunteers will help prepare the island for the summer season. Volunteers will beautify the surroundings by cleaning up the area, especially along the coastline, for instance by hand-picking garbage or collecting trash blown by the wind or brought by the sea to the shores and surroundings. [Contact info available to subscribers] volunteers may conduct some gardening activities as well and possibly make and maintain walking paths. Well maintained paths enable people to visit the area without damaging it and this important work also helps to improve safety for visitors. Depending on the advance of the project and weather conditions, volunteers may have other possible tasks such as checking up and repairing garden furniture. The working day normally runs from 09:00 – 17:00 with breaks for lunch and coffee; however, please be prepared for some flexibility due to the nature of Iceland’s changeable weather, as we may not be able to perform some of the tasks or activities planned. The temperature in May can drop during the evenings. Volunteers should have motivation to work outside and work in all kinds of weather, as it can get cold and rainy. The working plan is flexible, and it will depend on the needs of our host. No previous experience is necessary. The camp takes place around the summer solstice, when the sun hardly sets, and the nights are almost as bright as the days. The bright nights are magical and staying awake and enjoying the beautiful surroundings is a unique experience. During the time of the camp participants will have the opportunity to experience the midnight sun as there are 24 hours of light even if the sun does set for short periods of time. [Contact info available to subscribers] volunteers will be lodged in a local house on Vioey Island, in shared rooms. The facilities are equipped with a kitchen, shower, and a washing machine. Wowzers! How time flies – I’m just reviewing the article I wrote for The Caretaker Gazette in 2012! Amazing how true it all still is – wonderful adventures in house sitting have been part of my way of life for so many years. I still love it! And www.carteker.org has been one of my mainstays. It has given me many wonderful opportunities. My husband (of eight years) and I are currently in a 10 month housesit in Mexico, which came through the Gazette. It is on a seven hectare Ranchito with a lovely indoor/outdoor hacienda style house. We have great internet (important to us as we both work online). The electricity is solar powered, and there is a well on the land that services the house. As with many housesits, this one would not be for just anyone. It requires moderate ‘handyman’ type skills, is rural and not your modern urban living. My husband grew up in Central and South America, so he is fully fluent in Spanish, and I’m an intermediate Spanish speaker practicing on Duolingo daily, which is really required to live in this region and be comfortable with the local interaction. Some of the tasks required are weed eating, managing one or several workers on the property, using an electric pump to bring water from the well, keeping things maintained, plumbing repairs, etc., however it all seems to be a fair exchange to us. It is not a paid position, but we are living in a beautiful place about 10 minutes from the Pacific Ocean. We enjoy the peaceful beaches nearby, pretty countryside, warm climate, as well as the local mercados (markets). We also participate in helping with spay neuter clinics and other programs that ex-pats have started, to improve life for the local people and animals. My husband has lived in Mexico for 18 years, and I’ve been traveling and living in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Peru for the last 10 years – so we are really comfortable here. We enjoy the simpler lifestyle. Of course, The Caretaker Gazette has great housesits in a variety of places. Over my many years of house sitting, I’ve learned many things – here are a few: 1. Every housesit is different, with different skills required. It’s good to know if our skills match the housesit, and the location. Expressing our skills to the owners always helps build a bridge to get a desired position. 2. Homeowners are all different, and it requires a bit of adaptability to get along well with the people, to respect and harmonize with their environment. 3. We find good communication is so important! We like to send photos to the homeowners and keep them posted on the status of things. They always seem to appreciate this! We have a home in Mexico, which friends wanted to rent at the same time this housesit showed up, and we were feeling the need for some change and adventure. So, this has worked out well for all. After we leave for another housesit for the homeowners to be here for a couple of months, we plan to return for the following 10 months, and our friends will continue to rent our house. This kind of thinking can really open up travel, adventure, learning about new places and things, and becoming more of a global citizen. We really love it! Needless to say, we travel with what we need, however our needs are simple. A few things are stored during this time, and we travel light. We have done a number of house sitting gigs via Caretaker.org. I’m so thankful for the work that has been put into this by the invisible, faithful Gary Dunn over the decades, keeping this wonderful meetup for home or ranch or castle owners with those desiring to housesit. It is a fabulous service for those who crave adventure, but still would like a place to ground and feel at home. We personally love living outside the US – although, I’ve also done great housesits in America, including a 900 acre Colorado ranch for the musician Dan Fogelberg, before he passed on a few years ago, and another Colorado ranch gig that was in the Gazette. Interestingly, in Mexico there is something called ‘squatters rights’, so it is not a good idea to leave a house sitting empty. Thus, there are many house sitting positions. Getting good references and getting to know circles of people in areas you like, where homeowners will refer you to their friends is a great assist in finding positions. People often ask us. “Is it dangerous to live in Mexico?” This is a great question, as much propaganda on the news would like to keep people isolated and in fear. So, we don’t use a television.
Our views to the Sea of Cortez
One of the Magnificent Pacific Coast Mexico beaches
We do keep an eye on news online, however, to a minimum. There are great websites and Facebook sites where you can communicate with people in local communities and learn more about the area, etc. iOverlander.com is a good one for travelers. It took me a few years of traveling in Central and South America to realize that no one was going to grab my backpack or purse. I have never had anything negative happen in all my travels, only good things. Most people in most areas are wonderful, friendly, kind, and helpful. We currently live near two small fishing villages, and enjoy friendships with local families and expats as well. The bay here has been preserved as a marine mammal sanctuary, and the locals have been included in fabulous programs to do guided boat tours and make items and food for sale. We own a non-flashy car down here that gets us where we need to go. We blend in how we dress and act. We are congenial, communicate in Spanish as much as possible. My husband is great at following google maps and I usually drive. One of the interesting aspects of our most recent house sitting positions is how we get food as we are in more rural areas. Most villages have lovey, simple, small family owned tiendas (stores or shops) with usually most of the things we might pick up at the supermarket. We really enjoy the relationships with local shop owners, which range from amazing fresh caught fish from the Pacific or Sea of Cortez. Other dry goods, dairy and produce meet our needs quite well. Even something as specialized as olive oil might be in a local shop if there are enough ex-pats around to request it. If there is produce we would like that they don’t have, we request it, and they can usually have it within a day or two. Patience with communication, using a translator if needed (I like to use Google Translate on my phone), and willingness to be kind and build relationships are super helpful. We have transitioned from a long time vegetarian diet to more keto recently (see info on this journey at my website and 21st Century Superhuman YouTube channel), so my needs for fish, fresh veggies and some dairy are readily available. My husband is eating beef, which he gets locally produced, without going through a feed lot, or any commercial processing. Our brown eggs come from a local family with the chickens pecking around outside in the yard. When folks ask if our food is organic, I have to say “no,” however it is very fresh and wonderful. Some of the bigger ex-pat communities like San Miguel de Allende, Lake Chapala, and San Cristobal de las Casas, tend to have organic growers in the area due to demand. There is the footprint of the big chemical agricultural companies down here, also because much produce is shipped to the US – so it is an interesting balance between the traditional growers, organic and commercial producers. We do wash produce which is not organic in our well water with a small amount of Clorox, baking soda and Bactericide (with iodine). A very interesting feature has been that any time I’ve been house sitting in a rural area, there have been several veggie trucks that come into our area a few days per week. This saves us from driving an hour to the nearest city to find a Supermarket. It is really a delightful way to shop! The Xcalak house sitting position was for seven months in the southern Yucatan Peninsula and came to me via a Help-Wanted ad in the Gazette for a position in Mexico. I was offered the position, so the regular caretaker of five years could walk the Camino de Santiago. The internet was good, and I was able to get writing projects done, plus broadcast videos to my YouTube channel. Wow! What a great experience, and nearby became my ‘permanent’ home. We get asked about a lot of telephone service. If you travel with a US phone find out what travel service and data you have. Download WhatsApp – for free calls on Wi-Fi or data. It is about 250 pesos per month for Telcel Amigo Plan, for unlimited calls to Mexico, the US and Canada and about three gigs of data on Mexican or unlocked phones with a SIM card. We have driven across Mexico, from Yucatan to Baja, enjoyed the trip, found gas stations (always be sure to fill up), country roads to Freeways (with tolls). Crossing the border in your car requires a vehicle fee of about $400 (so you don’t sell it in Mexico), returned on the way back, and insurance required. Thanks to house sitting and the simpler life I’ve been able to make good progress on my published books and website 21stCenturySuperhuman.com There are many photos from our last housesit in Baja California with amazing birds and sea life, that Jacques Cousteau called the ‘aquarium of the world’. All I can say is having a life that includes house sitting opens up wonderful doors to adventures and new places to explore. It can be soul touching as we realize that everyone in the world does not have the same chances, which deepens our compassion, and exploring how we can make a difference to make the world a better place.

WANT TO LIVE AND WORK in the South Island wilderness? New Zealand’s only two Wilderness Lodges are seeking motivated people to join our team. [Contact info available to subscribers] is a premium nature lodge set on a 4,000 acre working sheep farm and nature reserve alongside Arthur’s Pass National Park. Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki offers the same high quality hospitality in a very different natural setting surrounded by the West Coast rainforest, lakes, rivers, and seacoast. Both lodges host guests from across New Zealand and around the world seeking high quality hospitality and a connection with the plants, animals, and landscapes of wild New Zealand. As a family owned and operated business we have been at the forefront of nature tourism for over 25 years. These roles would best suit couples or two people willing to share a room due to limited staff accommodation on site. Lodge Assistants will undertake restaurant duties over breakfast and dinner times and undertake housekeeping during the middle of the day. Occasional other duties may be available dependent upon the candidate’s skills and experience (grounds, kitchen, bar, reception). Combined with consistent hours (generally 40 – 50 per week), this is an excellent role for saving money. Lodge and staff facilities are maintained to a high standard and there are lots of opportunities for outdoor adventure on days off. We also encourage staff to join the guided nature activities we offer guests. The ideal candidates will have experience in similar hospitality work environments and living situations, a mature positive outlook on life and the ability to work well as part of a small team, a willingness to work hard and be flexible, and add value to the unique natural setting of the Wilderness Lodge. XENIA STUDIO began with the quest to find a beautiful yet simple pair of earrings that was affordable but not fast-fashion. When owner Vanessa couldn’t find what she was looking for, she taught herself how to make her own jewelry. The result is a line of unique statement jewelry that focuses on harmonious combinations of shapes in pleasing color palettes. Xenia Studio’s mission is to provide affordable jewelry that is expressive and transformative, simple yet meaningful. Special adornments to accompany you wherever life takes you.
